      I can imagine that most people find that very tragic birth/death scene (early Cesarean Sections, always fatal to the mom - - as she just bleeds out), horrifying. That unborn child (fetus) was probably laying transverse (head on one side and bottom on the other side, inside of head down or in a deliverable breech position). They tried to save the infant because the fetus would just die inside her and then she would die anyways. Unfathomably tragic outcome.

    Remember, we had season upon season in this world, where absolute _horrors_ were being depicted in virtually every episode! From Theon's torture at the hands of Ramsay Bolton, to Harrenhal being shown as a massive ancient ruin used primarily, at the moment, for torture and depravity.
    Every single episode I can recall, at one point or another, saying; "Jeezus! Can't [this character] catch a friggin' break already?!" 😁
    Whether it was Arya, being captured and mistaken for a boy made to sleep in the mud in a cage, or burned bodies of children being strung up at Winterfell, or all of the disgusting terrors taking place at Craster's Keep, beyond the Wall.
    We went from highlight to highlight like the battle of Blackwater bay to the Red Wedding to John Snow; "undercover," with the Wildlings before having to fight against them at Castle Black, without anything even _resembling_ 'relief,' in-between!
    The introduction and fleshing out of new horrendous characters, and witnessing what even the most seemingly unimportant ones were capable of doing, (even to the more; "important," characters,) or so we thought lol a band of Bolton men chopping Jaime Lannister's hand off, or _multiple_ seasons of everyone believing we'd finally get to see Caitlin Stark reunited with her children once again, only to see her murdered unceremoniously by old Walder Frey halfway through the season!
    And that's all without even _mentioning_ what we had to watch Daenerys going through, across the narrow sea.
    My point is; This world that George R.R. Martin created is quite typically an extremely difficult place for even the most seemingly "secure" characters to survive!
    (Making it also a world that many (most) of us are unable to turn away from, take our eyes off of!)
    But there was a reason we all tuned in every week, because we needed to see what would happen next, because that balance of power was so precarious most of the time there really was no telling which one would be ahead or which one gone forever, week to week!
    And even the most seemingly innocuous or relatively mundane conversations or events were more interesting and compelling than almost everything else on TV, at the time.
    If they're trying to get everyone submerged back in to that world all over again, they've got a TON of heavy lifting to do.
    I mean, even with George R.R. Martin right there helping them, they're really gonna have to bring it for it to have any chance of being anywhere near as compelling.
    (Seriously, watch any old clip from any episode you want! Up to about the end of season 6 especially, and you'll see what I mean! It's easy to forget just how amazing it was, and so consistently, week in and week out!)
    But, that doesn't mean I'm not hopeful. 🤞

    It's clear that the Targaryens aren't extraordinary without the dragons, but they believe them to be really able to control the dragons so they marry within family to keep the blood pure. But then what exactly makes them fireproof? Like Daenerys doesn't burn, we see Viserys running his hand over candles...is there actually something magical in their blood?

    • @MidnightCrow928
      @MidnightCrow928 Год назад +21

      Daenerys in the books, was only fireproof in the fire that hatched her dragons. This is because it was magical. Like the witch told her when sacrificing Khal Drogo’s horse to save his life “Only *death* can pay for life.”
      Obviously that didn’t work at the way she had planned. However, in Drogo’s funeral pyre, she also had the witch burned alive. The witch told her that she won’t scream. Dany told her “It’s not your screams I want, only your life.” The witch’s death paid for Dany being able to keep her life, and at the same time hatched her dragons.
      After this, she was no longer fire proof. However, the show took it and ran with it.

    Another great video, your mastery of detail and eloquence is what sets these apart. I didn't read this book so there are tons of details here that I otherwise would have missed. Thank you. I liked the episode very much but was a little taken aback by how small in scale it was in terms of staying insular within Kings Landing. GoT took place in so many different lands and houses and with so many different story lines. HoD feels smaller in that sense, focussing on one very intricate story line. Just takes a minute to get used to.

      i think that's something a lot of og GOT fans are gonna have to get used to, bc there's no reason (yet) for a story about the Targaryens to go all across Westeros, at least not in the first introductory episode. there'll prob be multiple storylines later, since we saw Daemon go off and def once the war starts, but this is a very specific arc that focuses on the people in King's Landing. i get your sentiment, although i actually liked the focus on one cause we get more detail without interruptions, plus i always enjoyed the King's Landing scenes in GOT :)

    Here's the thing about Visarys and Emma: he was told to male a decision that would end up horribly regardless of the choice. Either they would attempt to remove the baby to possibly survive with the mother dying OR they would continue to attempt to deliver the baby normally with an extremely high likelihood of both dying. In one hand, the king could attempt to save the child but knowingly sacrifice the life of his wife (whom he loved.) In the other hand, continuing to try and deliver the baby normally would almost certainly result in the death of the baby but leave a slightly higher chance for his wife to live, though she would still be more likely to die.
    Try to think about what an impossible choice that would be as a husband. Of course, if he had told his wife that the baby would surely die without sacrificing her life, she would have asked for milk of the poppy and relinquished her life. Instead, the king decided to try to save the baby without having to tell his wife that she will undoubtedly die in the process. It is a demonstration of how weak and unwilling to confront reality that Visarys actually is. He is a monarch of no significance and little accomplishment as the realm is, for the most part, in times of peace and plenty.
    His reign is similar to that of Robert that we see in GOT season 1 where there are no more fights to be had and an unfit ruler is simply overseeing the goings on of the people without having to be further tested in conquest or dominance. The difference here is that Visarys was basically elected into his position without having to prove his fitness (yet presiding over a calm kingdom while doing his best to ensure all people had a good, safe life) and Robert took the throne by force, always being the hammer in search of a nail (and never finding the proper target as they were too close for him to swing his might.)
    It's a very interesting distinction between the two kings, neither of which were challenged during their reign but both finding the job of ruling to be tedious and unfulfilling. They got to their positions in different ways, did their best to ensure peace among their subjects, and fell victim to manipulation by those closest to them.

    The King has Mercer on his Back which means he probably has a weak Immune system.. In really life, Henry the 8Th of England had it on his leg, and they would do the worst thing you can do with a staff Infection or Mercer. And that is to put ointments on it and keep it moist.. You have to scrub the dead flesh away with soap and water and keep it as Dry as possible. And back then clean it and burn it.. It just made me think of the Tudor's and Henry the VIII..

I haven't read the books but I've watched GoT so many times now that I know most of the story from it being mentioned previously throughout the show. Huge spoilers. Massive spoilers. It was talked about so many times throughout GoT. There's even an episode called 'The Dance of Dragons . If you don't want to know what eventually happens to Rhaenyra Targaryen, steer clear of a certain episode of GoT in season 3.

    So there was actually a practice many, many years ago where people would refer to their aunts/uncles with the term "cousin." From what I've read, it was moreso about the age of the person (who is the niece/nephew) becoming "equal" to their relative and seeing them as a cousin rather than their cousin's parent.
    I don't know how common the practice was (and it is not brought up elsewhere in the GOT lore) so it could very well be an oversight or change to the story for the series reasons. We see that the Princess refers to Dæmon as "uncle" so I am inclined to agree with your assessment that the names/relationships were changed for the show. It could be that, in this world (at least as far as the show is concerned), the words are used almost interchangeably. But even when Rhærnyra is to wed Jacærys, she refers to him as "cousin" so it's not exactly a set rule. I have to say, I'm a big fan of using the Latin "æ" in names. Unfortunately, my wife and I already have 2 sons that have been named (and will not be having any more kids since our youngest has a genetic condition leaving him mentally/physically disabled) so we can't utilize that in our family. But I do have a few ancestors that had names with "æ" so maybe our eldest will have kids and use one of those names.

    It was an interesting choice to make the Velaryons dark-skinned, but I also find it interesting that they made Rickon Stark platinum blonde. Bookwise, everyone of First Men descent has dark hair, only Andals could be blonde or redheaded. The Starks did not intermarry with the Southern houses until Ned's time.

    • @reiakari
      @reiakari Год назад +1

      I didn't think Rickon's hair was blonde, it looked more like his hair is white from old age. If the Stark with the salt and pepper hair behind him is Cregan, it'd make sense that they'd cast someone who would believably pass as his father.
      I think house Velaryon is a smart choice in regards to being able to cast a dark skinned actor in a lead role without adding a plot hole when connecting the two shows. By the time of GoT there's no one in the main cast in relation to Corlys (Velaryon rather quickly died off after he did). The royal Targaryan bloodline is directly descended from Daemon and Rhaenyra, excluding the incest in the direct line, I think the main outsider houses that occasionally appeared on the family tree were Hightower and Martell (Baratheon is technically a Targaryan cadet house, not sure if distant enough to count as outsider 😅).
