Thank you for creating an instructional video. The industry would certainly benefit from proper training. This video and others like it are oftentimes the only hope for new car haulers.
That being said, for new drivers in this same equipment, namely a Peterbilt affixed to a Cottrell CX-09, here a few suggestions:
Lower position #2 as close to the ground as is possible before loading and unloading. Position 2 is your second car on. It goes on forward.
It doesn't take long to lower the deck, and it's worth the time. By lowering deck/position #2 before loading (and unloading), you create a flat platform onto which you can drive, at a height at which you can safely work. You can also enter and exit your unit without fear of falling, and strap and tighten your tires from the ground.
The job is dangerous enough. Don't take unnecessary risks. Loading and unloading #2 high in the sky will save you only a few minutes every day, but one fall off your truck might cost you for a lifetime. Load and strap #2 at ground level.
Next, take your load height seriously. If you're close to or East of the Mississippi River, aim to be at or under 13'6". Google the height requirements nationwide. There's a map.
13'6 is a tough ceiling for an East Coast car hauler, but it exists for as reason. (I'm looking at you, I-44 thru St Louis!)
If you can't make height, drop or swap out a unit and save yourself the anxiety of a bridge strike. If you're close, and by close I mean 13'8, consider hard strapping a unit with a strap around the frame, so as to compress the suspension. OEMs frown on this, but damn if it don't work well on a 1500 Silverado over your day cab.
With that, measure honestly and with your trailer brakes released. That means red button pushed in, air in your trailer suspension, like it will be when you're driving. Twirl and walk down that height stick at your best 90 degree angle without looking at the measurement until you begin to skim something. Then look at your measurement. Where your stick begins to flirt with the top of that roof or loathed shark fin antenna is your true height. Too many of us set the stick to our "hopeful height" and then see if the stick doesn't drag across a roof.
Lastly, download the Cottrell mobile app. When the provided diagrams load properly, they can be very helpful to you.
Finally, have some respect for the law. I'm not saying you should do 54 in CA and a full air brake test every morning. I'm saying you should give more of a damn than you don't.
Take I-20 (NOT 30) thru Ft Worth. Strap all four. Remember that Mercedes S classes bounce a lot! 4wd on any vehicle that has it. Electric vehicles are heavy. Close your #1 pockets for Teslas. And don't take a chance with a set of rail tracks on top of a triangle-like peak.
This is some really sound advice thanks for the information.👍🏿👏🏾
yooo thats awesome! i wish i could drive with one of those trucks... greetings from germany :)
This job should pay over 125k a year. There is a science behind it and a special skill set and mentality. You are out in the rain, snow, ice, heat, sun, wind. I saw some auto hauler jobs for 70-80k/yr and that is CRAZY because you can be a steering wheel holder and do dry van and make that or more. I value this job at 125k.
Yes i wouldnt be doing it for less bro !!
Yeah but thar starting out you don't start out making 125k you gotta work your way up in the game. But still 70-80k is alot of money in 1year what are you talking about.
It’s a tough job, never home, always working, damage a car comes out of your own pocket, i talk with united road company drivers and they all hate it, same goes for hansen & adkins, atg
more like over $200k a year
@@learsinamorrellik1655 you will be surprised man, if your a driver for a company you be hard pressed to make 100k a year
I've never hauled cars but I've often wondered about it. It seems like something that would be quite complicated. I appreciate this video.
Getting into car hauling next week. Watched this video 20times lol same with your other videos. Thanks for the help all your videos are really useful. Good shit be safe out there 💯
Experience car haulers that know what they're doing make it look easy.Take your time, be patient, and learn the craft. Speed will come with time
hows it going? its been a month since youve posted.
Nice video dude! Great explanation on how everything works.
Aloha bradda. Just watched one of your videos and started to subscribe to your channel. It's amazed me if how cargauling is such a different type work then flatbed and all other fleets. Jeep doing you and God blessed. Mahalo Nui Loa for sharing your contents.
That was an awesome instruction. I am always nervous thinking about loading the top car over the cab. The other positions don't seem too bad.
I’m actually watching this for a project and it help me a lot, thanks!
Nice truck
I'm a car transporter driver in the UK, we carry 11+ and the cars are tight as a nuns chuff, some of the places we deliver to are really tight to get into,
Thank you for this deep overview! 👍
Thank God for those big blind spot mirrors you have! I have big 6" round ones on my car! I don't know how people can drive without 'em!
Nice video
Thanks for the tips.
New here man ❤🎉 nice channel 😊
Love the drls you got
If u whould put the one on 5 backwards it gets lower also the grand wagoneer goes better on 2
I never wanted to do that job but much respect to those that do
This 9 car hauler guys work damn hard, i enjoy this line of work but running hot shot, 3 car step deck trailer ram 4500
Wide turn Wide turn , but no seat belt okay 😂😂😂😂😂
we were only allowed to 13 ft 6 inches
Cincinnati is my home traffic there is not fun. Stay safe driver
I can't think when I last carried 6 unless there were a couple of high roof vans in the mix, seven standard height Transit and anything from 9 to11 or maybe 12 cars are the norm this side of the water. We can run a little over 60 feet long for the truck itself and although there's no height limit 16 foot is about as high as we run at for practical reasons, empty we start out at 13. 9".
I'm up here the Detroit area
Were these all new vehicles/ I am getting a new Chevy 2500 long bed in June. I hope to see it coming off the truck.
I have seen one overturned car hauler, it was in Ohio in the winter over five years ago only time I ever seen it .
Enjoying your channel. Nice job! How did you get into car hauling? Did you know someone who got you into it?
Thanks yes i got offered a carhauling job as soon as i turned 21 by brothers transport so i tried it out and almost 7 years later still lovin it lol
@@BIG_G-great! I’m about to start my journey may i have your contact to find out a number of things. Cheers
I'm joining a car hauler company next week, is local harder than regional ? How many loads would u expect to load if you do local ?
How many holes do you use for drop pockets on 1 spot for cars, suv & trucks ?
Cars i slide all the way in midsize suv 5-6 holes full size suv 8 holes and trucks maximum
Hello good day enjoy your videos very informative and Fries out of load up cars also you looking like your brother videos too. Very very good teaching video oh, God bless you. Yeah I want to get into hauling cars. Is your company hiring?
Thank you we are currently waiting for new equipment to arrive to expand this Year currently there is a line of drivers waiting to join our team if you are interested to see if it will work from living in detroit give Brothers transport a call from Nicholasville ky !
@@BIG_G- thank you very much mr. Big Z resolution, I will reach out to them. Will them trucks be automatics?
@@nicoperrin1060 yes most trucks are automatics ofcorse we do have a fee manuel so whatever works best between you and the big boss !
Nice rig, how long have you been hauling cars?
Thanks Going on 8 years
Do u personally train at your company ?
On my way for training to learn how to haul cars. Ready for this new adventure. Plus I already have my own truck. Would like to get a 7 or 8 car haul trailer.
howd it go?
When it’s lopsided like that can you get an out of service from D.O.T.? Maybe a stupid question I’m just wondering.
No sir you can load any angle as long as all 4 straps on tight
Sheesh them heights are scary hope you never run into a 13.8 bridge …lol…I’m usually 13.4 with a load like that
Never had a problem under 14 middle lane life
Do u check your route for bridge heights before u go and set it in your gps ?
Yes sometimes most our routes are the same so we know the bridge hights from experience
I probably wouldn’t load with number 2 (White Ram) in the air though. A lot of guys end up with concussions or worse. Other than that good video man…
Did have to go back a cross the r/r track get out how you do get cross
Wouldn't it be more aerodynamic to have your first car facing forward to stop drag?
Yes but then your overhight
So you went cross r/r track empty so what do to get cross load
You just press a button and your airbags inflate 4 more inches to get across rr empty and loaded
I love loading minivans and trucks wayyy easier then small Prius I swear 😂 I’ll take a ford raptor over it
Seatbelt
How much do you charge per mile? Or is it per vehicle?
It’s usually per vehicle or per load but average is 3-4 a mile minimum
@@BIG_G- Okay thanks for the info! Do you have an e-mail?
No Pins???? thanks For The vídeo Big g
10-4 bud
What carrier has these loads?
Brothers Transport out of Kentucky
@@BIG_G- do they hire out of state drivers?
@@musclemania30 yes but currently theres a line of drivers waiting to get in
@@BIG_G- I’m sure, I may submit an application to get my name in the mix.
What's the max height you can run at in America?
We try to stay under 14 ft
okay, in the UK bridges16ft 6 and over have to be marked but who i work for like us being max 16ft, thanks for replying@@BIG_G-

how do you get away with 14 foot tall when legal height is 13'6"?
Only some states pay attention to that on carhualers like Michigan or ohio most carhaulers have no choice we are rarely at 13.6 most the time we have no choice but to do 13.8-11 but our cut off hight is 14 max since most bridges are over 14 minimum
@@BIG_G- 10/4 I drive a lowboy, so I wasn't sure how it worked for car haulers.
Not all states check your height... Arkansas, Maryland, and South Carolina check your height a little bit more than everyone else.
Steering wheel holder for sure. Silly question.
so no pre trip then? 5 dont count its 15 min by law
It depends what officer is enforcing the law lol ive had multiple inspections with 5 min pti and nobody said a word lol
The law doesn't actually stipulate a minimum time for the pre and post trip inspections. However, most DOT officers and companies hold the opinion that you can't properly inspect every item the regulations require you to in any less than an absolute minimum of 15 minutes. If a DOT officer sees inspection times that they believe to be insufficient during an inspection, they can require you to do a pre-trip inspection for them to demonstrate that the time shown is accurate. If that inspection either is incomplete or takes significantly longer than the time reflected in your logs, they can issue you violations.
D.E.F. AND AN AUTOSHIFT. ?? I applied at a company for car hauling, all they had were automatics, I said sorry, I drive trucks not busses.
Its pretty easy driving an automatic you should try it lol
@@BIG_G- drove them , nothing about them I like.. especially in the snow..
Richard williams
I'm from Wales I'm shocked out of your fan we have the new bridge train station trains diesel trains movies trucks cranes cranes just trains train station trains police car PlayStation ambulance Orton ambulance police dissertation beta seawater just trains Jason spaces train station diesel train steam engines
I've driven both and automatics extend your shoulder's life. (Rotator cuff). If you plan on doing it for a long time you have to think about those things.
@@alonzosmith5075 higher extended shifter will save your shoulder too, I even have one in my dodge dually now. Helps! BIG TIME..!
STOP HAULING VILE AUTOMOBILES !
