Lydia Pence....She was the lead vocalist of "Cold Blood" which came out of the Bay area of California along with Sly Stone and his group and many more etc...

In my close to 70 year old opinion it’s not nearly close, except for the fact Etta’s voice IS raspy. I’m NOT trying to sound or be critical of her and DO think she’s one of those artists who can be appreciated by people who listen to music from ALL years and genres - not just ‘soul’/‘blues’ or particular time period. * However I honestly feel that NINA Simone is a step or two above Etta!
Cannot compare Etta to Nina to different types of singers!Can you compare B B King to Johnny Hartman?Etta was raw Blues and R&B!Nina was jazz and all the phrasing like Betty Carter and Sarah and Amy Winehouse. Etta and Nina represent their genres with aplomb.
At a Hole in the wall in Chicago they playin Etta sing Luv and lust!Nina is refined but down and dirty Etta gonna be played on the juke box and the band stand.
