Yes Roundabout with Geddy Lee on Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2017

- Progressive rock band Yes are inductees at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on April 7, 2017, broadcast on HBO. The band’s co-founding frontman Jon Anderson reunited for a performance of Roundabout from 1971 Fragile with Rush bassist Geddy Lee, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Rick Wakeman, guitarist Trevor Rabin, and drummer Alan White.
Anderson and late bassist Chris Squire established Yes in 1968. Squire, Anderson and Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, Alan White, Rick Wakeman, Tony Kaye, and Trevor Rabin make up the official Yes lineup going into the Rock Hall. Although Bill Bruford came onstage to accept his award, the original Yes drummer did not perform.
Anderson last performed as a member of Yes in 2004 and officially left the group in 2008 after a fallout with his bandmates. “We’re definitely connected,” said Anderson. “It’s a family. There’s always animosity. People that you love you don’t always like, and there’s always going to be that. But when you’re celebrating who you truly are, you forget about all that and just get on with meeting each other and seeing each other, and it’s just one of those things. It’s not a problem; We’ll just get together and have fun. Music is a healing force on every level.”

Along with Yes, Pearl Jam, Journey, Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, and Tupac Shakur were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. The 2017 ceremony also includes Nile Rodgers of Chic receiving the Award For Musical Excellence.
„Not all heroes wear capes”
Rick Wakeman definitely does
Dude's a god, can wear whatever he pleases.
He made me want to play keyboards. I play guitar. Now I try to make my guitar sound like his keyboards.😆
He is simple amazing. Between him and Keith Emerson from Emerson, Lake and Palmer, it's a tough call. You be the judge on this one and let me know what ya think. ruclips.net/video/GpBo2XWjC-Y/видео.html
@@kayaich3992 Thank God there's another one of us! ;-) I also play pedal steel, and did a few gigs with 5 pedala nd console steels surrounding me - wearing a cape! Those who "got it" had a great time!
Rick Wakeman is the reason "Yes" is even in my vocabulary.
I love how Geddy doesn't try to take over the song. Plays it like it should be. Pure class.
Oh, yes!
Pure class, as always......
He has nothing to prove
hes a bass player. how could he take over the song? john paul jones was the one and only bass player in all of rock n roll!
Easy, come out and make a fool of himself. Kind of like Tom Morello does on every song he joins in on that's not his. No one wants to hear string scratching on "my guitar gently weeps".
@@jddunbar6557 lol have you ever listened to rush? the bass often is the main focus of many of their songs.
You can see Geddy's humbleness, but he's having such a good time. I'm sure he was honored to play with YES.
Right! To play in place of Chris Squire? Awesome. I got to see the classic lineup in Madison, Wisconsin back in the late 1970's, with Alan White, and before Trevor Rabin.
Shoooww
Geddy is the man. Such a great guy.
Yes was fortunate to have one of the best bass players around to play with them.
Him and Al introduced Yes so it was very fitting
What a monstrous Bass Tone...Geddy's the man, and what a honor to have him play for Chris:)

Sounds pretty close to a Rickenbaker for a Fender
@@jdsalinger73 Ged intentionally dialed-up that sound on his pre-amp.
He usually plugs in direct with his bass tone funny enough.
You know what's really cool about this? This has probably been Geddy Lee's dream come true.
Shane McCollum was thinking the same thing, no doubt he grew up listening to stuff like Yes
Awesome Shane. Geddy says in the Rise of Kings Documentary that YES is one of his mentors
That is pretty cool, even stars get star struck
Absolutely....I was trying to think of a comment to make about this wonderful moment....and I found yours....sublime...couldn't think if anything more perfect to say.....
Rich Fuell aw jeez you're making me blush jk
It's an amazing moment in history. Geddy Lee goes from waiting in line for tickets to see Yes in concert to playing with the band on stage many years later filling in for his idle. I love this.

The mistake in your comment of putting "idle" instead of "idol" is curiously apt for Chris Squire
Plus he got to do it for them at the Hall of Fame. So cool.

as a bass player, i noticed Geddys eyes are on the fretboard - hes making sure that he reproduces CHRIS' bassline exactly for the YES fans to better capture. totally 100% respect from Geddy, who was a young Chris Squire fan himself.....
Makes me feel better about constantly eyeballing my fretboard while playing Geddy's basslines... and forget about singing on top of it!
He should have used a Ric with round wound strings and a pic, like Chris.
Its does not sound like Chirs
@@michaelhogan6770 it would have been cool if he did, but it was fun to hear his sound along with the sound of Yes. And Geddy himself even said that playing with them all felt almost bitter sweet because no one could replace Squire.
Chris Squire had a custom Blue PRS 4 string bass.. I had temporary use of it years ago.
Geddy was true to the song... After All, only having to play one instrument.
Would have been cool if he played his Rickenbacker
Geddy Lee was one of only a handful of musicians on the planet that could have stood in for Chris Squire.

Geddy is like “I only have to play one instrument and not 3?” Jon says: “Correct. This is Yes. We have 12 people on stage”
What a nice comment 👏🤩😉
..its funny because when he has moments hes one handing organ solos
K Ruth that's hilarious because it's true XD. There's a Prog Rock cover band here named Mr. Nice Guy, and they usually have at least 7 or 8 musicians on the stage at any given moment, but they also have 3 or 4 more waiting in the wings until their instrument is needed for the next song(s). I think they have 7 of them onstage for Roundabout.
Well, Chris Squire's bass is enough to keep you busy.
@@lennylouguzmansolano5063 I remember hearing decades ago that Chris Squire played his bass like a lead guitar. I've always enjoyed putting a Yes album on the turntable and just _listening_ . No visuals and certainly not as background music.

Geddy Lee and Yes = Awesomeness
I'm sure he was playing "air keyboard" just like the rest of us the first time he heard this song. It's just a reminder that this isn't just a job for Geddy. I can't imagine Rush would be as good as they are without first loving rock music, prog rock and just about any other really well put together music.
This must have made Geddy's dream come true.. He was a massive Yes fan.. Imagine filling in for an iconic bass player..
Geddy’s 63 here. Trevor’s 64 here. Alan & Rick are both 67 here. This is Howe’s last performance before turning 70 the next day. And Jon’s 72 here ( SEVENTY-TWO !!! ).
Look at 'em go !! ICONS of ICONS. And that's an understatement.
And I still cry about Chris.
Can't think of a better stand-in than Geddy.

The guy barely ages. Saw his solo show 2010 - really was great.
Dr. Bombay what don't you like - this performance? Yes in general? What?
Daarneo Yeah, I am not much a Rush fan, but yeah he really fits the part well. Squire is not an easy bassist to replace.
and you too
Geddy: "you mean I don't have to sing, play keys with my hands AND feet all at the same time? Just play the bass? Easiest gig I've ever done!"
Indeed.
Their voices are similar .. was Rick suggesting that Jon wasn't the voice that he thought was so irreplacable ?
He could have covered the vocals and done a great job!
But he will play air keyboard at 1:50 because he's Giddy.

Anderson was AMAZING. I LOVED YES when I was in high school in the early 70’s. Had every record and played them to death. Well, I haven’t payed attention to yes for about 40 years and was STUNNED by how great Jon sang. Most vocalists lose quite a bit of their vocal range, and vibrato because they just don’t have the strength of their youth or partied too much. Jon Anderson's Voice has really held up well! - Geddy did Chris proud :-)
This performance is very clearly autotuned heavily...
I love how everyone claims these performances dont have all kinds of auto tune and post production magic on them. It's not like its a bad thing, anyways, music would sound terrible without it. However, the pitch correct speed is obviously way too fast, it sounds robotic as heck. Jon Anderson does not sound like a robot, thats a good thing.@winomagnet
here and a performance of close to the edge somewhere else on youtube, its not as noticable in this one except for a couple of sharp jumps between noes but in the close to the edge one it was REALLY bad
@winomagnet 2:32 on "charge the view" you can hear some jumps, and its really obvious a few seconds later when he says "atmosphere" when it instantaneously hops between two notes on the last syllable. Another quick jump at 4:17, and other than that it mostly can be heard in the overall robotic sound of his voice here. If this is a post production version like you said then that explains it already. I believe the close to the edge performance i found (it was old, never said it was recent) also was post production with much heavier autotune. I think the only reason its so audible is because of Anderson's unique voice. It's kinda breathy so there's much more artifacting from the autotune, its harder to hear autotune with singers with crisper voices.
@winomagnet I am very much a new Yes fan, but I know what pitch correction sounds like. I dabble with music production and have used Auto-Tune before. I never said he needed Auto-Tune, just that it's being used. Whether it was the choice of Anderson himself or was the choice of the engineer/s running the audio, its here. While I haven't even been alive anywhere close to as long as Yes have been playing, I'm pretty sure Anderson can't instantaneously switch between two distinct notes on a single syllable of a word, which is present. I am not trying to insult Yes or Anderson, I was literally only stating that Auto-Tune or some other form of pitch correction is being used. That's it. If you don't agree with me, that's fine, I'm done arguing over something this stupid.
Look kids, these are true artists and musicians.
A-freaking-men.

I saw the who in a concert in Pittsburgh pa years ago and I heard some young guys saying I wasn't expecting this, and they are like 70 years old !

just saw ARW in minnesota. totally legit show. wakeman kills, rabin shreds, lee pomeroy on bass! louis molino is on point. the played south side of the sky as their second tune!
You can tell Geddy is loving playing with Wakeman..... I am sure there'd be an opening for him when Rush retire.... I am almost bought to tears hearing this in this era....
everyone talking about Geddy Lee, but let's talk about Howe still on fire
And Howe!
And Trevor Rabin is just standing in the corner like: "when are we gonna play owner of a lonely heart?"
@@markdemell3717 ...andhimselfandhim
@@Kaktuskastl Blah,Blah,Blah,hehe.
Steve Howe is, and always will be, the man
Got to love Wakeman's commitment to the cape.
Not all heroes wear them...
Laughed out loud at that one but yes you are correct I was thinking the same thing
It's much cooler wearing the cape.
You put on the cape and you are stage ready.
He's earned the cape with the way he manhandles the organ pipes.
God may strike me down with lightning now. Geddy playing bass on this song makes life complete
sgtgiggles Indeed!!
wow! complete? a complete pile of fucking bullshit is more like it. Sherwood should have been on bass
its funny reading these bullshit comments by guys who probably have a hard time spelling the word bass let alone knowing what to do with it if they picked one up. I can picture the drool running down their pock marked face while trying to swat away the flies from the smell of the cheeto covered underwear that hasn't been changed in a year. if this piece of music makes your life complete then good for you, don't let some wanker try and take that away from you.
Probably did it for him too!! Would love to know who's bass he was playing on?
POINTTWOFIVEMOA I think the band knows what's best......NOT YOU.....now Push Off
SO glad they did the full album version. And Geddy really is the ONLY choice to cover bass.
John Entwistle might have been the only other.
Or Ben Orr(RIP) if he was still alive.
I think Chris Squire would have approved. Well played, Geddy.
His wife called Geddy and asked him personally to do this for Chris. So awesome.
Without a pick too! What a champ. RIP Chris Squire
Im sure Chris would have approved IF the actual guy he picked to replace him had been playing. But ARW got in the way of that, being the massive assholes that they are.
@@donutcookiepie STFU YOU HAVE ZERO MEANING FOR NOTHING YOU POS
@@donutcookiepie Well that dude is dead af so he really doesn't care
I think Chris Squire was looking down and smiling.
What a monster version! Two guitars really filled in and worked so well.
And who else could fill Squire's shoes...perfect!
Seems to me Steve Howe said that they wouldn't have played unless Geddy covered for Chris. Geddy was literally their only option.
@@NeilABlisspreeeeetty sure steve wanted billy sherwood there
If you wear a cape while you play your instrument, you're a badass.
What a dream for Geddy. Playing with the same band that Rush saw while they were recording Caress of Steel and almost made them not want to finish making it. Nailed Chris Squires tone to a T...on a J-Bass no less! RIP Chris.
Hey Kris I've seen other comments also mentioning the same thing about a J bass , If ya have time could you explain what that means and why it's so unusual to see Getty playing one. Thanks My Friend
Rick is killing those keyboards! Amazing performance by the entire band! Geddy rocking the bass!
EEMusicLIVE Slappin’ da bass, even!
Loved seeing Geddy playing with Yes... you could see the little kid in him the whole time. Steve Howe nailed that original guitar vibe as did the whole group. Awesome!
Cool!
I was so happy to see Geddy filling in for the late Chris Squire...RIP Chris. Only Geddy could pull off a magical Chris Squire bass line! BRAVO Geddy!
Geddy Lee is a class act!
Jon is brilliant. His voice is as good as ever.
So glad I got to see Yes when Squire was still alive. I can still feel his bass lines just thumping me in the chest.
A lot of Royalty on that stage
..and a member of Rush!
A Phoenix is Rising No such thing as royalty in music. Royalty is given at birth. These people earned their praise.
Well said!
Ein Walroß royalty just doesn’t appear
You have to show you can keep it
Or you have to fight for it then keep it
Wow. The boys still sound great. Anderson somehow, miraculously, still has his pipes. And it takes a legend to sit in for a legend: props to Geddy Lee honoring the incomparable Chris Squire.
Im 69 and my voice is better than at 25, the trick is to not blow your voice out and it will stay young
I'm thrilled Ged is playing with them, but this induction should have happened YEARS ago when Chris was alive.
🙏 ✌ ❤ 🎶 🌎 👏
But Rock and Roll Hall of Fame isn't good anymore; now they admit anybody, no matter it isn't rock, and TRUE bands have to wait CENTURIES for being EVEN considered.
@@ChivaInvencible I hear ya. It's frustrating.
Geddy is my absolute favorite bassist and him playing with Yes only 2 years after Chris Squires death is such an amazing tribute to him. Plus Geddy rocks and has fun with all songs like it’s second nature to him
@@caseysurgent6091 I love Geddy too! I hope he continues to make music.
Hell yes.
Long time Rush fan here. What a proud moment for Geddy Lee !!! Chris Squire was one of his biggest influences !!! A dream come true for Ged !!!
Geddy fits like a glove
Jon sounds insanely good
His voice has barely changed at all.
He has a gift!@@GraemeWilliams21
Kevin Savo absolutely, I actually saw them once with my dad in Chicago (I’m 38) it was pretty cool, I grew up on a lot of prog rock. Johns voice is forever embedded in my brain. I also have thoughts of “Legend” in my head right now lol
Dream come true for Mr.Lee. One of the great bands in the history of rock.
About fucking time that Yes was inducted into the hall of fame!!!
Damn straight, David. TESTIFY! I'm saying that not because I am an expert on the band. I am not. However, I have always reserved a great deal of respect for Yes. In fact, it's interesting to see Geddy Lee fill the late, great Chris Squire's shoes here, as Geddy's own bandmate, Neil Peart, has in the past expressed his admiration of the equally-great Bill Bruford. This is one of my favorite Yes songs, on what overall is my favorite Yes album.
Yeah, it´s pretty unnecessary when you think about it
Couldn't agree more. Rock is supposed to be anarchistic. But if there is one,Yes was a glaring omission. As is Todd Rundgren.
But to your sentiment Thereis Hope, I saw the Sex Pistols in '96 in Cleveland at an amphitheater, John Lydon said of the Rock Hall "I hate that Fucking place"....
Heck yeah!! Both Yes and Rush are among my favorite bands of all time, and both Geddy Lee and the great Chris Squire are incredible musicians!
but no Deep Purple......yet
Dude's appropriately dressed like a wizard on keys💎
Gandalf
Rick Wakeman is an actual wizard in real life
bjtucker5 Just like jhon paul jones

Still has to have his Cape on! What a guy! Thankyou!
Geddy playing with Yes. Does it get any better than that?
Yes, Geddy not playing with Yes and Chris Squire playing.
Answer is no :)
justafanintexas That is true, but since Chris has passed, I would say that Geddy is the next best option, would he not?
Mark Keith no I don't think it does ! Been in to them both since I was a young un ,54 next week and still play em ,they are top and always will be .
Lemmy playing with YES. Wait a second. He's dead too. Probably showing Chris some new licks right now. ;)
This song is timeless. It was a classic when it hit the charts and it remains a masterpiece today! Beautiful performance.
They got the perfect man and musician for the job, Geddy Lee! May You rest In Peace, Mr. Squire! And thank you for all of the great music! You were a legend while alive and even more so now!
Geddy, looks like he's wetting his pants... Having a great time playing I the band that inspired him. What a class act, the
I think Chris would have approved if the assholes in ARW had let the actual bassist of Yes play that night.
donutcookiepie you are a salty snail.
Dang. Geddy is SUCH an amazing bass player.
The Best.
How much more of a compliment can you be given as you cap your career than having Geddy freekin' Lee go all FANBOY onstage playing your music ?!?! ( 1:48 ) That just about sums it up for me.
The master approves
Anderson, the unmistakable voice. He still has it.
Gotta love Rock Wakeman and his cape. That's rock & roll!
Rick
But where's his chicken vindaloo?
Ged's face is in the dictionary next to "Pro".
It's great how he nails this very respectably, without embellishing much if any. It's Chris' night, and Ged is paying homage the way it should be done. This sounds great.
Also in the dictionary as most famous Canadian Jew....No disrespect of course... :-)
Amen
@@stevomcsteve9492 Take off, Oy?
Hear hear .
Yep. Geddy's a class act. I'm actually glad he didn't play a Rickenbacker - that would have been tantamount to tactless. Your Comment's exactly right: staying with his Fender lets Geddy capture a lot of Chris's bite without stepping on his memory. Of course, it could have been a case of Exclusivity Contracts and vigilant Fender lawyers stopping him playing a Rick... But I prefer to think that it was just one great bassist fondly remembering another. :-)
Jon Anderson is nearly 70 and STILL sounds effin awesome 🙌🙌🙌
Exactly what I'm thinking. Frankly, it's astonishing. I saw them back in the nineties and there's just no diminishing. At all.
