When you’re using that thickened epoxy… make sure to paint the surfaces with “unthickened” epoxy right before. The unthickened will absorb into the substrate and allow a much better bond for the thickened epoxy if you apply the thickened immediately following and before the unthickened cures :-). Great work! Keep the videos coming. You’re making great progress!! Enjoying the vids!

Yes, otherwise the epoxy will migrate out of the filler into the wood grain and possibly create a resin starved joint.

That's what I was about to say.
I was also going to say that he should treat the rot with thinned penetrating epoxy, and then coat it all with regular (non-tinned or thickened) epoxy, and lastly fill with thickened. One other tip is, being that its a part that is constantly moving, I would recommend using a low density filler like West Systems 407, it will give the coating a little more flexibility and should be less prone to cracking from vibrations or lite impacts.

Mark build a bench from scrap pallets and whatever you can find. Working at the right height and in the shade will make the work way easier, scrabbling around on the ground soon gets demoralising. Looking grand keep going.👍

👍👌👏 This episode reminded me of your last rudder fixing video. But, although two rudders, these ones are definitely in better shape and you fixed them well and fast. 2) Please kindly allow me to tell and suggest something: Absolutely anything is better than working on the ground in the dirt (Pakistani truck style for instance 😁). Bending over will wear you out, even if you will only realise it 20 years later (but then it's too late of course). So please kindly allow me to suggest to build yourself an inexpensive workbench or table in the shade. Respectively at least use your folding workbench. Put an inexpensive white tarp over the structure between the two hulls to create a dry and shady work space.
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards, luck and health in particular.

Some good comments, especially putting a plastic bag over and smoothing it down, saves work later.
Also trim before it has gone hard.
My big concern is that the ply you are fully encapsulating has dried out sufficiently. Epoxy is great for keeping water out….similarly it keeps it in!
I have a cheap moisture meter to check. Ok it is not particularly accurate, but does give a good indication.

If I might share a tip with respect to spreading the filler and forcing it into the cracks: Further to the wet-out point raised above, I have found that using a flexible metal "decorator's knife" - or a plastic spatula for that matter - makes it easier to smooth the thickened epoxy and force it in - you want something with as little surface friction as possible (it's the same deal for plastering: please don't ask me how I found this out!) :D
    Good work fella.

Force it in is the way..

    • @johnsm100
      @johnsm100 Год назад +5

Totally agree, you definitely need a flexible and slippery spatula /knife and apply much more force to push the filler right it, you do seem to be "patting" it into place rather than getting it into the repair area. And def wet the surface with epoxy first for a better join. Great to see the progress though, thanks for sharing the videos 👍🙂

To save heaps of sanding I’ve taken to laying out the “cut to size” glass mat on a flat board with a film of glad wrap on it. Then wetting it out with epoxy is a breeze and you can pick the glad wrap and saturated mat up as one and put it in place “sticky” side down. A bit of smoothing with a roller or scraper and leave to cure. Once cured, the glad wrap peels off easily for better finish and a lot less mess.😁Cheers& Beers from Down Under🍻

When applying glass, I find it a lot easier to wet the glass out first then apply it - especially with difficult to access areas. Also same for taping. When going round a radius such as the corner of the rudders, cut wedges/lines out/in to allow better adaption and finish. And when dispensing resin/catalyst by pump, keep the containers vertical!!

Id like a 6" half-moon shaped divet, somewhat round and smooth, very consistent, like youd achieve with a grinder . this is a great example of what im talking about. the amount of time, energy, and built-back-stronger-than-every efficiency you can achieve will make you , happier, more confident, enthused, and way faster than trying not to take too much out, being more complicated and less invasive, etc. the only way id want to use that microballon epoxy batch in the edge of my rudder like that, would be vacuum bagged.
