- Elliot Forbes, head barber at MÜHLE Treatment Space in London, talks about safety razors, and gives us a breakdown of the differences between open comb and closed comb using the best selling MÜHLE TRADITIONAL series as examples. Elliott also outlines the benefits of each razor head so you can select the one that’s just right for you.

Great explanation! Must admit I feared R41 without reason, now I have entire Mühle range, great company to promote, all razors provide astonishing build quality and blade clamping, very smooth and comfortable shavers.
Just recently purchased a long handle Muhle razor(r89 grande) was a tad apprehensive I’ll be totally honest… but wowzers 😮 absolutely no going back…thank you Muhle for a superb product at a very reasonable price…
I actually learned DE shaving with the R41 and the green Astra blades (by accident), a friend of mine let me borrow a spare safety razor of his thinking he gave me the R89 but forgot to swap the razor heads.
Got used to it quite quickly and loved it very much, but avoided doing more than two passes.
When I finally ordered my own r89 I wondered why the design was different. Now I can basically shave with any DE razor XD
Recently brought the R41 twist, amazing build quality with superb head design, I am really surprised with the efficiency even though the head is not overly heavy, due to this the head does not dig into the skin as much causing less irritation, kudos to Muhle team for the design 👍
First was R89,then R41..Both of them are AMAZING razors.
Between those 2 is the Muhle Rocca.
My r89 arrived a few days ago, just love it.
I do love my R41 but i will buy the R89 too just because is a beauty 😂
You have convinced me - this Xmas I'm going to buy the "open blade" razor for my "mum" - she bloody well needs it!
Been using R41 and feather blades for more than 4 years. Worked fine for me, sensitive skin
I have r41 rosegold my n°1 razor so perfect and realy close shave one pass it's like 98% wisker done thx Muhle
Proud owner of a Muhle R89!
Please, please, please make a stainless version of the R89 and R89 Twist!
An often-heard wish. We are not currently working on it, but perhaps one day it will come true.
The muhle rocca is my absolutte favorite razor i have the all stainless one i would also love the jet black one
Great Choice! We love it too.
@ hello what safety razor would you advise to beginers in wet shaving? or better..is there any razor that can perform better or help to shave right under the nose? thats where i have trouble. thanks
@@JPVNG67 Thank you for your question! The razor we suggest to people who are new to safety razors is the R 89. It has a closed comb and it is easy to learn to use it.
Especially in the beginning it is very important to shave with the grain. Also try to apply no pressure to the razor. this should help you to reduce irritations and trouble.
R41 GS is the best razor for me.
Elliot forbes is that you
Is open comb the ultimate DE shaver? And is it a closer shave than regular comb?
This is a question of personal preference. However, shaving with an open comb is always more direct. Especially with longer or thicker hair, it often provides somewhat more thorough results.
Which is better for you?
Excellent demonstration, thank you. Can you also please advise on names of the different parts of the razor head. In particular, the structure through which the safety bar is joined to the body of the baseplate; some have only two such connections with a long 'soap channel' in between, some - like the Feather AS-D2 - have four. Thank you.
The Muhle razors have a "top cap", a "base plate" and the handle.
@@steelheart4148 Thank you
@@eliasragi7472 The Muhle R41 is very aggressive. The Muhle R89 is mild. If you are looking for something in-between, there is the Muhle Rocca.
@@steelheart4148 Thank you very much.
Which is better ikon with oss handle or muehle r41 open comb I can’t decide
I just heavily cut myself for the second time with the butterfly, so I've decided that something's wrong..I've been using it for years. maybe its time for change
Hello, specialist. What is the difference between Muehle R89 models ,,,, R106 ,,,,, 108 out of handle ????
R41 my one love
I am wondering if an open or closed comb razor would be optimal for myself? I do not have an abundance of facial hair, and I am looking for razor the will provide the closest shave, considering that I shave every day. I frequently am left with a slight coating of stubble and I wish to have an extremely smooth shave daily without irritating my relatively sensitive skin.
Hello Nick,
to find out which razor system fits your needs you should consider the following thoughts: It is way easier to learn to handle a double edge razor with a closed comb like the MÜHLE R89. Most people with a normal density of facial hair are happy with its results. And also the risk to hurt yourself is smaller and we suggest this system for people who switch to a double edge razor from a multi-blade system for the first time. When you feel confident in handling that and want a more agressive and direct handling, you can still buy an open comb razor (or just buy an open replacement head).
I hope that helps :)
@ Ich danke Ihnen!
I'd recommend an adjustable safety razor. They can better adapt to one's shaving experience, skin sensitivity and beard growth and are a much better first safety razor option (that's rarely suggested). Unfortunately, Mühle doesn't offer such a razor (to my knowledge).
Which is better for shaping your beard
Many users with thick beard hair prefer the open comb (R 41). However, we prefer to recommend this to experienced users. A good compromise is the MÜHLE ROCCA. Its shaving head is a little more direct than the closed comb of the R 89, but significantly less aggressive than the R 41.
Is the Gillette King C De Safety Razor open or closed? I'm new to this
the king C Gillette safety razor have a closed head (I start with it, good product), now I received a R 89 Grande 2 weeks ago and he's Wonderfull, most beautiful than the King C Gillette and the handle thicker feels better in hands!
Thanks a lot for the R89 Muhle !
@MÜHLE Rasurkultur ,
Hi there. Looking to buy my first. Have a few questions and like to try in person. Will you be in at your Carnaby shop post Dec 02 (end of lockdown)? If not, where is the best place to direct my questions (email?)? Also, will Muhle be offering any Black Friday, Cyber Monday, or Holiday discounts??? Tx!
While I enjoy the 2013 Mühle R41 razor, I wish Mühle still offered the more aggressive 2011 R41 head (with a different model number). Does Mühle have any plans for new aggressive razors (despite the limited demand for such)?
Great to hear that you love our aggressive R 41. At the moment we don´t have plans on introducing a more aggressive version of the R 41.
The Muhle R41 gs is a little more agressive than the regular R41. A close inspection reveals that the the “teeth” on the gs model are slightly different.
Put R89's top cap on R41, instead of its original top cap..You will be surprised 🤫
You might try using the R41 top cap w/o the baseplate. Simply screw the handle tight, directly to the blade. That will basically equate to a straight razor with a handle.
What do the r numbers mean? Is there any material on this?
The numbers 89 and 41 after the R actually have no deeper meaning. The razors themselves were released under the TRADITIONAL design series. R 89 and R 41 were originally "just" article numbers, which over time almost became a proper name. Ultimately, R 41 refers to a safety razor with an open comb and R 89 to a safety razor with a closed comb.
Would you recommend the R41 for everyday shaving?
Yes but with mild blades though.
R41 There is no closed comb only a half-open so-called grab
