On a historical note, these razors have more in common than meets the eye. Both are significant in the Gillette timeline as both marked design changes that were not announced or promoted. Very uncharacteristic for the attention hungry Gillette.. Reference the recent Single Video for more information here. These ads here are only a few of the surviving mentions of the Ranger Tech, and here's the clincher: these are not ads from Gillette but local stores trying to sell their sets. It's still a mystery as to why Gillette did not promote the 1941 or 1946 Ranger Tech set, but plastered every wall with the Super Speed and later Notched Super-Speed. Let us know your thoughts!

My favourite double edge razor is an oldie. A Gillette from around 1905. It shaves like a champ. And the double ring under the shavehead just makes it special to me.
I think the term is "efficient" when everything works well, and "aggressive" when it doesn't!😉

Great video. I agree that “efficient” is a more accurate word than “aggressive.” However, as a new wet shaver (I’ve been wet shaving for a little under a year), I appreciate the caution the word “aggressive” instills. I worked my way to using a more “aggressive” razor, and the term helped the transition by encouraging me to be more cautious.

Hi Matt! Great information. I do appreciate you doing these educational and comparison videos. I find the Gillette Old Types shave very well...if you have a light touch and ride the cap approach. I easy achieve a DFS with that technique. I have a 1938 Gillette Sheraton that is out of this world efficient! I agree with the later Tech Rangers and Super Speed being like sports cars. Those make good daily shavers.
Nice video. I say aggressive generally is tied to blade gap and/or exposure, where efficiency is tied to how well a razor can remove whiskers comfortably. I relate to cars. Gobs of horsepower could be considered aggressive, but the car could handle terribly, while a small light sports car may or may not have a lot of power, but could handle on the road better and faster. Maybe due to suspension geometry or many other attributes when combined just work.

2 of my favorite and recently most-often used razors are a '47 Super Speed (Grandson to your Ranger) and an Old Type that had a non-repairable handle tube crack (cracked again after silver soldering it together). I nickel plated a longer brass tube & the longer handle gives it better balance and better shave than my other Old Type with original shorter handle. Either one gives a reliable BBS 12 - hour shave.

I am the same way I like shaving when I have 4 to 5 days of growth and I use my adjustable razors more than anything I like having a heavy beard and I have sensitive skin

I stumbled across a 59 for 13 bucks on ebay. it was part of a set, the other one was a silver flakes tip. paid 26 for us pair. never had that kind of luck before and both were in excellent condition after a cleaning.
Open long comb is my favorite shave
Exactly my experience. I shaved with a New ball end yesterday, with an Astra SP, which for me is a super smooth and comfortable blade, and it felt like a Japanese Katana on my face. Not like I'm going to nick myself easily, but definitively scary enough for not using it again. They do have a great display ability, though, so back to the den as an ornament.
I find that with those old razors, you have to use the rounded head a little more to find the correct angle.
When you do, they are great shavers and quite forgiving. But they do not tolerate bad shaving angles or excess pressure on the blade edge nearly as well as a bar guard razor will.
Good advice. I might give it a try again when I feel brave enough ;)
Everyone has their preferences, it is weird interesting and cool that shaving became a Hobby.
Edit: so for me, i do long strokes, and i do not pass more than 2 times in the same spot. If i need to shave it again, i re lather after entire shave. And do again. 🤷🏻♂️ just me though.
Try a Wilkinson Sword blade in that Old Type. I've gone through a bunch of different blades evaluating which 'feel' the best with the Old-Type and for me, it's the Wilkinson Sword and the only other one that is 'barely' acceptable is the BiC Chrome-Platinum. And I found BiC Chrome-Platinum is best in most of my razors, including both of my Gillette Superspeeds. But in the Old-Type, it's the Wilkinson Sword that reigns the champ in terms of "during shave comfort" and minimal post-shave irritation, while cutting the beard hair effortlessly.
I agree that the BIC C-P's work in a wider variety of razors than any other of my blades - except for maybe Voskhods. My Knack likes the Wilkinsons best. BIC's and Ripara LUX are my choice for all my open combs.
I think the Old Types are more aggressive than they would have been with the thicker blades with which they were designed to be used. Still great though, but I always use a milder blade in them.
Can I ask please, which blade do you use? I too have a single ring, and I tried a few blades, and they still shave for me very aggressive.

You've gotten me literally obsessed with shaving. After 10 shaves of 2 passes each today my face is feeling it! I prolly used the whole alum block! Lol I don't mind though, I enjoyed myself!!!! But after all those shaves i wasn't satisfied so I went for a full body shave with only 2 passes. Fucking obsessed. Cannot shave enough!!! Also have you heard of melting peanut butter and whiskey to help bread growth?? The article I saw said the proteins, sugars, and oils in the peanut butter work really well with the spices, oils, and alcohol of the whiskey (60 proof or less) and bada bing! So do videos on body shaving and that beard growth tonic please!!! Thanks so much! Its a love hate relationship i have with you actually, I hate you because now my life is nothing but shaving but I LOVE you because my life is nothing but shaving. Alright that's enough rambling (I sampled the whiskey I'm gonna use for the tonic) tehehehehe alright matt keep rocking the fuck out I love you man!!!!

I have an Old type open comb and a 50s era Super Speed. I find the open comb much too aggressive. It rips me up.
Come back to your open comb from time-to-time. I make it a point to shave with something different every day. In fact I use 2 razors for a left side vs right side shave-off. It forces me to pay attention to the feel and the performance of the particular razor in use, rather than just automatically shaving the same-old routine with an overly familiar razor.

You can get pretty cheap synthetic bristle brushes these days, you don't have to go for badger brushes that cost a lot. You could try for yourself and see if you like it. I find I use a significantly less amount of cream if I use the brush and a small amount is enough for a 2-3 pass shave where as with hand application I use much more. So in the long run the brush pays for itself by saving money in the amount of shave cream you use.

Only if you are using a shaving soap. Creams can often be used brushless. Although I find your product goes further using a brush.
Get a brush - it's part of the historical procedure. I have Grandpa's 90+ year old boar brush It's ugly but it works. I got a $2.89 Chinese brush shipped directly (for free shipping) from Taiwan. It's nothing fancy, but it works fine. Got a couple of other badgers that I like - I was convinced that "REAL" hair was the only way to go. But, I watched some of the shaving videos & just had to get a synthetic brush (spendier than my cheap badgers). I'm now a believer in the synthetic.
Nevertheless, if a cheaper badger is your only budget, then get one. If you have to work a little harder to get the perfect lather, then you will be learning the foundations of brush lather - it will make you all-the-better appreciate that $29 synthetic you buy with your Christmas bonus.

I used my Gillette 3 piece open combed razor and got such bad razor burn. I don't use any of my older razors because of that.

I've "always" shaved with a TTO razor, and when I began 'accumulating' (= collecting with no particular goal or direction) TTO's were my favorites. I stumbled on a Tech ... then another ... then a 3rd, and compared them to my favorite TTO's, and was disappointed, yet delighted in the better, easier, quicker 3 piece razor shave. Next, I had an open comb fall into my hands, and found it preferable to my [now] favorite Techs. An Old Style, New Style and a Goodwill, plus a modern open comb razor - some short, some long combs, came in the mail & really rock the shave for me.
I've neglected my TTO's for weeks now, but tomorrow will be a left vs right face off between my favorite Krona and my old Knack. I can shave well with about anything, but will the TTO's be more work to get that smooth shave? We'll see ...

WAY to many variables ffs. you aren't comparing Open vs closed, you're comparing 2 completely different razors.
The comb guard keeps the razor from splitting your lip and skin open. For some reason with a wide or lacking comb guard, the razor can lift some of your skin when you move it and the blade can slice you open. Very very badly. Which is why they were designed that way and called Safety razor for that reason.
