    I was leaning towards the Muhle R89 vs the Merkur 34C. Now I am definitely going with the R89.

    I went from wilkinson classic to merkur 34c and I am amazed about how much better merkur is. With wilkinson I had to go super slow and super light to not get my hair pulled, but with merkur I can go faster and actually enjoy the process. I can't even imagine that it can get even better than merkur.

    I have the normal mühle r89 and its a beautiful razor. Previous to that i used the king c gillette razor which is even more aggressive then the Merkur 34C. So i have to crank the Mühle up with a feather blade. Its interesting that the r89 is so efficient even with that little blade reveal. Its the German engineering my friend!

    • @igorszamaszow171
      @igorszamaszow171 3 года назад +2

      It is German & English engineering actually.
      The 89 razor head had been developed in close cooperation with Edwin Jagger. That's the reason why EJ have their own 89 model. They may have diverged a bit by now, but in the beginning the heads were exactly the same.

      @@igorszamaszow171 from what i heard, the head was developed by Mühle and Jagger made its own design handles, but with the Mühle head. That partnership happened in 89, hence the name.

    Hi Alex - new subscriber. I have both razors and agree: the Mühle R89 Twist gives a smother and closer shave than the Merkur 34c. Also appreciate your correct pronunciation of the names of the German razors - most wet shave influencers don't get the pronunciation right.

    Thanks for doing this video. I am finally going to switch to DE razors and I was torn between which of these models to try. It's not a huge amount of money, but it isn't nothing either. I think after everything I've read and your test, I'm going to go with the R89 Twist.

      @recordspinner94 I got the R89 Twist. I am liking it so far. It is a very forgiving razor. I have a tendency to rush the process, but I have yet to nick myself. It gives a very close shave with Personna blades. It has a fair amount of heft, and is just the right length (for me).

    Enjoying your videos for over a year now, very curious if you have experienced rusty water coming out of your R89 twist ? When I flick my down into the sink without the top cap on (have to do this fairly hard downwards swinging), brown rust comes out of the thread hole, I belive the mechanism inside is corroding even though I've dried it properly in the 1.5 years I've owned it. Trying to see if anyone else has this problem ! Cheers thanks

    i feel ( for me) Muhle a little more aggressive vs Merkur, maybe it is a consequence of longer leverage (lever arm of head) and heavy weight. Both good for sensitive skin. I For me the best to use with Edisson and Feather blades.

    Hi Alex, is R89 razor also suitable for tough beard with 3-4 days growth if I use a feather blade ?

    • @AlexShavesReviews
      @AlexShavesReviews  3 года назад +3

      Hi 👋 it would work, but definitely you will have to do a 3 pass shave if your beard is tough. If you shave only after 3-4 days I would recommend Muhle R41 Grande, it’s a open comb razor, super efficient especially with a heavier beard growth. You can check it out in my last video that I uploaded. Or go for a adjustable razor like Merkur Progress or Merkur Futur. But overall I would recommend Muhle R41 Grande if you shave only after 3-4 days. Try it with a Feather or a Voskhod blade, works like a charm 😁 I hope it helped, if you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Let me know what you decided to get, keep it touch. Cheers!

      @@AlexShavesReviews Thanks Alex for your response! I have been using merkur 39c slant and parker variant with Gillette SS blades since a year, recently I switched to feather blades and since then I have been getting real close shaves but also suffering from irritation. So I am looking to find a mild razor to fit feather blades. I will give R89 a shot , if not working for my routine will go for R41 😎, I don't like the variant adjustable due to the weight and head size, thanks again for your suggestion and really appreciate your shaving videos, they are really good 👍

  • @jamesdaigle8690
    @jamesdaigle8690 Год назад

    This has been my experience with these razors too. The Muhle R89 shaves closer while still feeling smoother than the Merkur 34c.
    The Edwin Jagger DE89 doesn’t shave as close as even the Merkur 34C for me. So, the Muhle R89 head is my favorite Cap & Plate set. The Gillette Heritage Razor comes with R89 head also, an excellent beginners and travel Razor in one.
    I just buy the Cap & Plate set, then I put them on the RazoRock Super Knurl handle, that is actually my favorite mild razor, even though it’s a Franken-razor, the handle is super-grippy, stainless and the perfect length & weight for me.
    I also prefer the R89 head because it’s made of brass, rather than Zamak(a lesser Zinc alloy) like the DE89 & 34C heads.
    So, yes, some variation of a Muhle R89 is always my first & glowing recommendation for beginners.
