    Lovely video, Sarah and Andrew. One of my own invented walks is to get the train to St Erth, walk about 500m down the A30 towards Penzance, take a little lane up to the right called Heather Lane, which becomes a footpath and meets St Michael's Way. I then walk to Penzance along St Michael's way, usually stopping for a coffee at Tremenheere. Look forward to the video on Penzance!

    Awww...a fantastic video again Sarah and Andrew 👌😁. So enjoyable and I knew you would love Tremenheere gardens... been there quite a few times when we stay at St Just...one of the gardens down there that you can actually take your dog with you 🐾🙌. Fascinating histories as usual and we must go and see the church at Gulval to see John Thomas's grave. I have so many things to explore when we go at the end of September...thanks to your walks 👍. My foot is slowly improving so hopefully by then I can do some longer walks 🙏. I think I was caught in that storm the other day with my pooch...boy it was torrential wasn't it 😱😁💝😘

    Lovely video as always, full of fun things (apart from the deluge in St. Germans!). Great to see you as kids & loving the old photos from other people who also watch along every week. Lostwithiel is an ancient town. They have indoor antique fairs in the village hall there which we have been to when we are down that way. And Tremenheere looks interesting. Hopefully will get the chance to see it when we come in early October....yep, I've booked for the Lizard & fingers crossed we manage to make it back to Cornwall this year after a few mishaps in the past 3-4years. Wow! Just what I needed after a spell in A&E for nearly 24 hours, which I have survived! this video is indeed a ‘Kaleidoscope’ of contents, laughter and good humoured spirits as always, never heard of ‘St.Germans’ looked incredible living quarters plus beautiful planting, typical English Weather I see, I am usually virtually in ‘Scotland’ same weather but more of it, rain that is! Interesting grave yard and grave stone belonging to John Thomas suspected pirate! he requested being buried there for reasons you are reviewing, I suspect like Andrew his money probably came from smuggling! a pirate is more romantic though isn’t it Sarah! Loved the walk to St. Michaels Mount, I have visited there it’s fantastic, also loved the rest of your walk, very interesting, Sarah, Andrew, and enthusiastic four legged friend, thank you 😊 very much for another amazing adventure, 😊🤗👋

    Regarding the skull and crossbones on John Thomas's grave (that name did make me chuckle!) - the symbol has links to the Knights Templar and Freemasons apparently. Wealthy people were often involved with those organisations so maybe, if JT was a wealthy man, that is way it was on his grave?

  • @rjelbart8850
    @rjelbart8850 Год назад +1

    Thanks for (another) great video. As you say, there does not seem to be any surviving hard evidence of John Thomas' involvement in privateering/piracy/smuggling, but he could not have racked up all that wealth as a simple yeoman and there is a further twist to the tale of John Thomas of Marazion / Gulval, that we are busy researching at the moment - but saving for Marazion Museum 😉. There were also other merchants and sea captains in Marazion involved in a bit of privateering after his death and some with links to the Carters of Prussia Cove.

  • @maobfh
    @maobfh 3 года назад +1

    If he was Catholic, and made it all the way across the atlantic, he could have come by some wealth honestly. Just by being a nice guy. There were also quite a bit of pirates treasures stashed on various islands from Portugal to North Carolina to Mexico to Tahiti to islands i can't even say. Also, and most likely if he was loyal to king somebody, he could have been working for the crown. The settlers across the pond were getting a little cranky and it was becoming a bit more difficult to deliver goods. Also, around that time, pirating on behalf of the crown was alive and well. The only reason i say all of that is because his gravestone said he was going on to a better place. Maybe pirates weren't as gruesome as they are painted to be. And of course there was the slave trade, going strong from England to the states around 1750 or so. It was during that time, after the Tuscarora War that 20,000+ Tuscarora were shipped to the West Indies as slaves. And members of other tribes who fought alongside the Tuscarora. Always remember, when I speak with any authority, that I am no historian and have not stayed at a Holiday Inn recently. This is ALL conjecture from things I think I remember. Except the Tuscarora. I can speak with some accuracy on that one.
