  • After reading a social media post that an important mythological and historic site had been closed for access, we went to investigate for ourselves. the first thing we needed to do was to figure out how to get to the site!!
With health and safety preventing access, will this be a long term closure? Can a solution be found to allow safe access in the future?
    The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film around Cornwall and publish videos on RUclips, usually weekly. Sarah collects sea glass to add to paintings of local scenes which are sold on Etsy. The channel is a hobby that we fit around family and normal day jobs.
Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.
    Frequently asked questions:
    Do we have meet ups?
We are limited for time because we fit the channel around our family and jobs. We meet up with people who are Patrons and RUclips members, both on group walks and one-to-one. Why not join us for ad free content and bonus videos.
Unfortunately we do not have scope for further meet ups but if you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!
    What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book title. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
    What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dogs, perhaps you can make up your own name for them.

Way back in the 1980s when I lived a few miles away and went there regularly. Since people have been going there freely for I don't know how many generations it must surely be a right of way.

i visited Roche Rock when I was 19, 35 years ago. I might be mistaken but i think that strong ladder wasn’t there then, there were single metal bars sticking out that were much more precarious than that ladder. I’ve always meant to revisit it, but somehow never have. While I was walking around the rock, I saw the glint of silver pertly buried and when i unearthed it, it was a victorian silver thruppeny bit. Something i’ve always treasured. I always imagined a victorian lady or gentleman tourist dropping it on a tourist trip like mine ❤😊

It’s strange how they close the access to things like this for our safety and yet the wopping great big things that are dangerous are ignored. Smart motorways for one. Thanks for another cracking video, just the job with a brew and a biscuit or piece of cake.

It seems we were all about 19 when we 'did' Roche Rock. Mine was 50+ years ago. BTW Roche means 'rock'. So we are saying Rock Rock. Obviously named after the rock, and well before the itinerant hermit built a chapel. Getting up wasn't too hard, the hard bit was coming back down. Roche was the home of our Uncle Tom, and his extensive family.. MANY happy memories.

I climbed up it the 70s although I was 'only a gurl' and some of the lads at school didnt believe I could do it! It was spooky up there but you could see for miles!

Love you two! The spirit of tregeagle obviously lives on in the mindless stupidity of half closing off a ladder, making it even more dangerous and challenging to young people. Lord Falmouth needs to come and see for himself. Did the person who fell sue him? A simple at your own risk sign would suffice and the excuse of harming wildlife is a scam, unless rare birds are nesting?

My childhood playground,we used to sit on the top arch .the access is dangerous by today’s standards but people are different now us 1970s feral kids were a different breed,we climbed all over that rock and none of us got hurt. The site was used in the filming of the Omen the final conflict much to our delight, though I think the film crew had quite enough of long haired scruffy kids by the time they had finished 😂

I love hearing your stories :) That was fascinating :) It was a shame that that the ladder was closed off, but as you say, health and safety in these days is everywhere. But as Andrew said they could put a notice at the bottom saying you climb up the ladder at your own risk. Put a tea room at the top, charge people to go up, they would make a killing :) Everywhere you go that used to be free they charge now.. Sign of the times now. Money is the root of all evil they say eh? Looking forward to your next adventures :) Say safe both of you, have a great week xx

  • @Cornishmaid67

The problem is these days that landowners are responsible for any injuries sustained on their land. Whilst it should be down to those who want to take the risk to be able to climb it, I can see why the landowner would want to protect themselves from any claims against them. Ideally the ladder would be repaired, but preventing access is the easiest (and cheapest) option.

We visited a few years ago, a truly beautiful place.
You can actually access it (as we did) from the roller at the beginning where Andrew was, it is tricky but doable.
I had heard that they had closed the access to it earlier this year which is a shame… but at least it has been done in a way that is not too intrusive to the area. Which is good as it makes a great photo opportunity.
Hopefully we shall visit again in November. Keep up the great work

It is a shame that access is denied because of the litigious days in which we live. My preference would be a sign at the bottom "climb at your own risk". But who knows whether that would suffice legally?!
Thank you both for another interesting video.

I live here in Roche and have this wonderful view every day. If you continued to walk along the football field and turn left along side another field you will find another access gate to the rock. There is also a gate in the corner of the cricket field that gives you access to the road then it’s just a few steps to the access point you went in. Don’t try to go in at the cricket nets and old roller, it’s very tricky. Remember it is very rich in wildlife so during bird nesting time please be careful, it’s also a known adder hotspot so please be aware during warmer months.
Parking in the football car park.
    Great video guys.

They’ve closed off Whipsiderry beach off, in the name of health and safety! Although I bet in a few months time the developers will be granted the planning as no one now uses the path and stairs 😤

If people weren't so litigious these days, this would probably still be open.
I am afraid this is a case of reaping what you sow.
Nobody seems to have any sense of personal responsibility these days - first reaction to an accident is to blame (or sue) anyone but yourself.

I've never heard of it. Next time I'm going through Roche, I'll see if I can find it. You'd have to be pretty fit to climb that ladder and back down again and you wouldn't attempt it if you weren't. It's elf and safety gone silly again. You can walk down a pavement in Truro and trip on a loose slab which Cormac hasn't bothered to fix. Accidents will always occur. What happened to commonsense? It might be an SSSI, but there is a lot of growth around it, so will be hidden from view soon.

Great video and solid research as always. And an impressive rock!
I wonder how legends like this start. People were really superstitious in earlier times, more than now. Perhaps they thought this was the logical and believeable answer.
I have never been there. But will consider if they open the steps again 😊 A 4 digits combination lock has 10000 possible solutions. With 2 seconds try on each number, the worst case scenario is that it takes about 5,5 hours to find the right one 😂 But it is probably the best not to try 😊
    Thank you. Torunn 🥰
