- Sometimes we stumble across surveys that rank towns and cities across the UK: 'The coolest place to live', 'The most depressing to live' or 'Best place to live!'. When they feature a town in Cornwall, it piques our curiosity and we feel compelled to visit and see if its true - tongue in cheek of course!
Recently a harbour village in Cornwall has been ranked the COOLEST PLACE TO LIVE in the UK and we took a look for ourselves. Join us on the trail of many cool things to see and do.

The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film around Cornwall and publish videos on RUclips, usually weekly. Sarah collects sea glass to add to paintings of local scenes which are sold on Etsy. The channel is a hobby that we fit around family and normal day jobs.
Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.
Frequently asked questions:
Do we have meet ups?
We are limited for time because we fit the channel around our family and jobs. We meet up with people who are Patrons and RUclips members, both on group walks and one-to-one. Why not join us for ad free content and bonus videos.
Unfortunately we do not have scope for further meet ups but if you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book title. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dogs, perhaps you can make up your own name for them.

I met Andrew in real life this week! So nice to bump into him. My Mrs would never have believed me, thanks for letting me take a photo with you! We love your videos. 👍🏼👍🏼
Any time! 😀
I live about 2 miles from Polperro but have not been for years as the car parking at the top of the village, privately owned, is Extortionate. My pension won't stretch to it. Would love to go again if I win the lottery!!!
We paid £12 in Polperro about £10 in Fowey and £10:50 in St Ives so not much different, seems to be the norm now. Sarah :)
We went to visit Polperro but the car parking was extortionate for our small campervan! From your video I don't think we missed much!
Plenty of much nicer places in Cornwall xx
Unfortunately Cornwall is blighted by expensive car parks, they have sprung up like a rash! Sarah :)
what a great little village,,[with a village in the village, in the village] thanx for all ur insite,, oxoxoxoxoxo🐨🐨🦘🦘
used to live in Norfolk, Sarah. So I know Wells next the sea very well.
There are prettier villages along the North Norfolk coast, but Wells is OK.
Sadly the whole area has been pretty much bought up by Londoners for second homes....earning it the 'Chelsea on Sea' title. Something you will be only too aware of living in Cornwall, with all the local issues/resentments this brings.
A familiar story! One we grapple with regularly! Sarah :)
Love Polperro!
Polperro is my fave place on earth. Been going there for over 40 years ❤
I agree the word cool is the wrong word to describe Polperro.
Great video as always.
Polperro is a great place! Sarah :)
Thanks
We love watching you two & We love Cornwall. You give us a giggle ❤
Thank you so much - very kind of you! Sarah :)
Amazing Thankyou both.I loved Polperro as a visitor. Keep the jokes coming Andrew! 🥰🇬🇧
Thank you! Will do! Sarah :)
Excellent review and assessment of 'Cool'. I wouldn't think. (Andrew enjoyed it and he got lots of funny material there) its No1 to live there, great for holidays. Keep all the good work going. Cheers Bob.
Glad you enjoyed it! Sarah :)
The model village is quite cool, as is the shell house. You nailed the price on Miranda cottage, Sarah! Sadly, charming places getting priced out seems to be a worldwide issue. Nothing stays the same, sadly. I'm sure the man fixing the boat in that vintage photo never thought his image would be floating around the world a hundred years later. Always fun when you compare then and now photos.
That's a thought - it would be fabulous to ask the old fisherman! Houses are no longer homes and have become investments for everyone these days, Sarah :)
I have never been to Polperro, but it is within the next walking holiday's itinerary. So this was a very nice introduction for me 😊 And absolutely cool enough. I loved to see the model village ❤ My own "village" is in Norway, so it is not in the competition 😅 Thank you for sharing. Very nice, and a beautiful village.🥰
You have a lovely stretch coming up and Polperro and Looe will definitely be highlights! Lovely coastal harbours and completely different, Sarah :)
I love Polperro, despite its slightly 'Kitsch tourist honey trap' persona.
I love the walk down into the village....everyone makes such an effort with their little gardens/flowers.
Polperro remains the only place where I managed to try a 'sweet and savoury' pasty....half meat, half apple.
Very nice it was too, but I haven't managed to find one again there in recent years.
Loved that painting of the blue Peter Inn at the Gallery (16:07), its so detailed it could be a photograph.
Hi guys. Love Polperro. Always our first stop when we come to Cornwall. We have met quite a few German tourists who come to visit there, as a German TV series is filmed in Polperro. It’s called Rosamunde Pilcher. X
Oh! They seem to film that show all across Cornwall, Padstow is another filming location! Sarah :)
Couldn't barely wait for my weekend treat 😍
Love the Moorcroft shop 😊
Thanks for another relaxing and entertaining video. Had to laugh about the Baltic Triangle in Birmingham 😂. It’s actually the Balti Triangle , birthplace of the famous curry dish xx
When I read that, I was wondering if it was a spoof! Ha! Ha! Sarah :)
Hi Lovelies…thank you for this wonderful Video like always ❤
Nearing Fall with very nasty windy weather it felt like a mini vacation watching Sunny weather in Cornwall
Love from Germany….❤
You are so welcome! Sarah :)
Not been since the late 80's. Must plan a visit soon and take the kids.
I haven't been to Polperro for years, but we will be visiting there in a few weeks time. I'll walk the coastal path from Looe.
Thank you for another great video, I look forward to them all week.
Stunning walk! Sarah :)
A Cool review guy’s, loved to visit but never thought of it as cool just quaint, I agree with Andrew about the ghostly apparition being cool, it gave me shivers! The Art Gallery was impressive just up your street Sarah …. and I vaguely remember Glynis Johns as Miranda …. I used to sketch all the movie stars of the day as my hobby … gone are those carefree days sadly:) Cheers 🥂 Bernice 🤗
Ps. I think the coolest thing was the scooter 🛵 like the one we had in the 60s-70s. and the largest thing I ever covered with shells was a very large fire place, some achievement at 9months pregnant 😂 I guessed the price of the property the nearest at 300thousand, I guess that makes Sarah also the nearest as well, sorry Andrew 😊
Totally agree! Quaint! Sarah :)
I've just discovered your channel. Brilliant stuff, folks. So nice to see the spots my parents would take me and my brother in the 70's and 80's. So many happy memories are flooding back. Can't wait to watch your back catalogue.
Awesome, thank you! Enjoy! We have been on RUclips for years although the early stuff is a bit cringe! Sarah :)
The music 😂 yeah! you two are cool!😎 Bas?
😁
@@CornishWalkingTrails hehehe
It looks very pretty there. Love that shell decorated house.
Wells next to sea is quite nice. We have only been there once as it was recomended to us as a beach to visit when we were staying in Dereham Norfolk.
I am curious and may even sneak a visit in the next few years! Sarah :)
I like it when it's stormy.
I bet! What a thought! Sarah :)
A friend of mine moved to Polperro from a town on the Bucks/Beds border . He recons it was the best move of his life ,he loves it .
Stunning location! Sarah :)
Been all over Cornwall for many years, but never been to Polperro. Thanks for the insight. On a by subject, we often have a "winter break" usually just a few days, it would be interesting to see your take on Cornwall in the winter...
It's more quiet. We have lots of rain and it is windy - ideal for safe storm watching! Lots of the touristy places will be closed, so you will need to head to larger towns or in land to find pubs etc. Personally, I love it here in the winter - no traffic jams so journeys are half the time, car parks have spaces, restaurants have tables, and I don't feel 'suffocated' in the main tourist spots! It's just a lot more chilled, Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails yes , love a good Cornish storm, we might do Polperro in February, hopefully some of the restaurants will be open.
I think 'quaint' and 'pretty' are more the descriptions of Polperro 🥰. You used to be able to go by cart and horse down from the car park... but I don't think it's been running for quite a few years. Lovely to see it on such a beautiful day... thanks Sarah and Andrew 🙏💖⚓
I remember the horse drawn bud, although we never used it! Sarah :)
Very entertaining as always 👍 Polperro…….mmmm well, haven’t been there since the 70’s. There’s no doubt that it’s a picturesque place and ideal for tourists. Would I live there? Probably not if I didn’t run a pub, cafe or shop. Keep your excellent videos coming, thanks
Thanks 👍
Lovely fun video. For me, it's certainly you two who define the coolest ~ you come up with something new & surprising every time. Polperro is certainly quaint, picturesque & fascinating, and is on my list to visit. I have a beautiful jigsaw of the Watch House, and a vintage b&w postcard of the House on the Props. I love how myth, legend & individual histories still proliferate and mesh together in Cornwall. It's such a special place :)
Glad you enjoyed it! The jigsaw sounds interesting - perfect for rainy winter days! Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails Especially love doing a jigsaw over Christmas/New Year holidays :)
I live in Stratford upon Avon, now that is the coolest place to live and lots to do there x
:)
Hi Sarah and Andrew. Portpello does pop up alot on Cornwall calenders in fact you can't buy one with outdoor seeing it on one..
Very picturesque! Sarah :)
Wells next the sea has a huge flat sand beach, the tide comes in so fast they say it travels faster than any man can run, so there are people in canoes who travel out via the water ways that go up the sides of the banks and they warn walkers that the tide is coming in so they turn back in time, there used to be alarms on the beach that sounded but I’m not sure they are still there or not. It’s one of the most gorgeous places in the UK. The tide circles the sand flats to form a shallow river between the main beach and the flats so it’s safe for kids to swim and use inflatables, with care and supervision of course.
Wonderful story! Sarah :)
Polperro to Looe, is a fantastic walk
I agree! Sarah :)
Come up to No. 3 sometime. See our famous bridge that is twinned with Budapest.
I never realised there was so much to Polperro, but then we've only lived in Cornwall for 27 years 😄
Lovely little harbour and we didn’t include the maritime museum! Sarah :)
Thank you for this wonderful vlog which brought back great memories. We spent two great holidays in Polperro in the 2010’s. The 1st time we stayed in a large flat over the leather shop near the harbour (not sure if it is still there). The 2nd in the Crumplehorn Pub. We live in the Norfolk Broads and have visited Wells-next-the-Sea many times. It is an OK place in North Norfolk but we are not sure why it featured so high on the list of cool places.
Glad you enjoyed it! I love these surveys because they seem to pose more questions than they answer! Sarah :)
Wells Next the Sea is a lovely village/town on North Norfolk Coastline. The stretch of road between Hunstanton & Cromer is a lovely winding drive along through pretty countryside & coastline. Blakeney Point halfway along the route has trips out to see the Seals in their natural environment. Delightful part of the UK!! As is Polperro, although the car park there was extortionately priced last time we were in Cornwall!! Must be even worse now. But it is indeed a picturesque place to visit & I seem to remember had the best Cornish Ice Cream I ever had!! x J x
Ah you'd love Wells-next-the-Sea! Not that far from us, handily! Why is glorious Cornwall so very far away from us 😢
No9 is Ely, on our doorstep!
Fun fact! My parents met Daphne du Maurier in Polperro in the 60s!
Thanks for sharing! Wells next the Sea sounds like a destination to add to our bucket list! Sarah :)
very sweet. I have never been to any of the top 5 places
Bucket list? Sarah :)
We holidayed in Polperro many times in the 80s and 90s in our younger days and always loved doing so, those were the days when the horse drawn bus was there and the village was truly bustling, but recently i feel that it has lost some of it's charm and atmosphere, there was shop selling paintings on the Warren with a quite eccentric lady with an old cash register, the bakery was in an old building on a street corner and had a certain quirky charm, you could hardly get through the streets as they were so crowded, but now it feels a bit lost and there are just not the amount of people there on the rare occasions we have visited recently. Still Love the Polperro to Looe coast path walk which we did regularly, but cheated and got the bus back from Looe to Polperro.
Yes lost its shops I believe. Bakery, the little grocery shops. Not the same anymore.
I remember the horse drawn bus into the village. I guess it’s progress! Sarah :)
Raid your piggy bank, the model village is up for sale. Own your own village, how cool would that be 😊
We noticed that! Such a shame if it ends up being gutted for more holiday homes! Sarah :)
Love watching your videos love them all enjoyed
Glad you like them! Sarah :)
Fun video thanks, not been there for years but dont think the locals would think its coolest place to live cos of so many tourists. Loved the model village and made me want to take another look. Bet its pretty cool in Winter though😊 Thank you xx
Definitely! Sarah :)
I so want to visit Polperro now thanks for sharing. It's just a,shame locals can't,afford to live there 😔
A common problem all over Cornwall and beyond! Sarah :)
Funny how those old houses are still staying up. I see new built houses cracking and falling apart here in Cornwall ❤️ looks like devolution not evolution 🤣
I've been coming to Cornwall for 30 years and yes polperro is beautiful I prefer Looe and Mevagissey
i came to Cornwall 1941 and been here ever since Hayle 83yrs old
By comparison, Polperro is more of a holiday venue, Sarah :)
Yes Polperro is Cool - why not? It has a lot for holiday makers, it is certainly photogenic, Great independent shops & great fun. It took a ‘cool couple with a fun sense of humour” to show this pretty quaint Cornish Village ( now taken over by 2nd homes and holiday lets) is fighting for survival like so many more of our beautiful Cornwall. A most interesting video. Well done. PS we loved the ‘model village’ I hear it is up for sale……
So true! Sarah :)
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Aw, shame you didn't come on the day that my blues band was playing in The Blue Peter!
Most of us live up outside the village in the more regular semi-detached houses etc.
Aww! That would have been so good! Mousehole, Portscatho and Cadgwith are the same - everyone live up the hill! Sarah :)
Thought provoking , and I find myself doubting the validity of the list. As a fully paid up northerner, I am gobsmacked that Morecambe made the top 5. It certainly has a vast scope for improvement. The old joke is that the Germans bombed the place and did 2 bobs damage.
Keep up you good work, it’s always fun watching them, and explains why we are currently on holiday in the county.
😂
Hope you had a good time! Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrailsoh yes, absolutely superb, still down here as well.
If you liked that model village you would really appreciate the one in Torquay.
I don't know about cool, but I spent a day in Polperro a year ago and was completely taken with it. Can't think of any other town/village I've seen in the UK that I like more.
Love at first sight! Sarah :)
I’ve always felt that Polperro is a bit spooky - anyone else?
We have wandered around in the dark with the wind blowing - spooky! Sarah :)
Another great video, many thanks! I've lived in Looe for many years, so I know Polperro very well. I love it, but it's never struck me as a particularly cool place! I guess everyone has their own idea of what is "cool", but like you, Sarah, I reckon it needs to have some "edgyness" about it, and to appeal to young people maybe, to have more a "cult" appeal than appealing to the average person, maybe a place with a great "alternative" scene .
That "number of independent shops per population" statistic seems a bit arbitrary and definitely favours places with lots of holiday homes. Having an art scene & a music scene is great, but is all art and music cool? Old-fashioned pictures of boats in harbours? Or three old bearded guys in a pub singing "What Shall We Do With a Drunken Sailor"? There are some cool things about Polperro - the Blue Peter for one, there is some great art too, and some good music during the festival,; lovely, but generally not a massive amount of coolness.
For me Calstock in the 1990s was a brilliantly cool place; beautiful, but largely unknown to tourists. a great "hippy"/alternative/community atmosphere and amazing anarchist/punk/reggae bands in the village hall every month!
The coolest place in Cornwall now is St Just in my opinion (the Penwith one that is)!
Well put! Polperro is cute and cosy and maybe not edgy or cool! Sarah :)
Doomwatch was a ground breaking, government influencing, blockbuster with huge viewing figures,
bigger than Doc Martin! The introduction of Lead Free petrol was a direct result of one of the episodes.
And saw the birth of the Department of the Environment.
Wow! That’s interesting! Sarah :)
I love Polperro it’s the prettiest town I’ve ever seen and Miranda is one of my favourite films from childhood! However, I think Clevedon should have been up there in the survey. We’ve had One Direction filming their video on the pier, Tracey Beaker, Broadchurch, EastEnders, Casualty, films like Remains of the Day and many more! 😊
I love Clevedon and have some lovely pottery with me here in Australia that we bought there back in the late eighties when I was living in Bristol. I agree it should be on the list, it was a great little town.
Sounds like a gem! Sarah :)
No contest. I live in Croydon 😂😒😕
Nice video 😊 feel content ❤
Thank you 😁
Miranda cottage listed at £350,000....
I live in Wells Somerset with the Cathedral Bishop Palace & moat lots of filming here plus "hot fuzz" was filmed here too.! So I'd say Wells is number 1 coolest place in Somerset 😅
Love it when someone gives a shout out for their home town!! Sarah :)
Wot about port Wen . Port Issac
Polperro and all these other little places have always been in existence and the Cornish just take them for granted as 'just another village'. Now, suddenly, it's all over the internet (just like Porthcurno). I don't understand why it is rated 1 when Looe has so much on offer than Polperro, which basically shuts down out of season, whereas Looe is open 24/7 with a residential population. It has a nightclub, bars, restaurants, pubs, market, two supermarkets and even a nice sandy beach! I notice there are no local facilities for local people in Polperro e.g. grocers, supermarket, day to day supplies, just touristy shops, which proves nobody lives there full time. £350k for that cottage is crazy really. There is no parking anywhere near, so where do you park your car? Maybe someone who doesn't drive would buy it, but it's just not practical considering you would need a car to get to the nearest supermarket. Is there even a bus service? It just winds up being another holiday cottage. The place doesn't do anything for me, same with Mevagissey and seagulls s**tting everywhere.
I have been to Wells-Next-The-Sea. I went there in 1999 when it was the Cornwall Eclipse and stayed there for a week. It was so quiet and it was a beautiful sunny day and the eclipse could be seen really clearly (it was a 3/4 one).
Marlow is very upmarket and being on the Thames adds to its attraction. Tracey xx
It is very interesting how they come up with these surveys! Sarah :)
I am one of the few who can't stand Polpero, to crowded and over priced, if the tide is out just smell the mud. By the way Morecambe is scheduled to get an Eden Project North in the next couple of years.
😂 A real King Cnut!! Sarah :)
Unfortunately this place is not for the locals Cornish
Unfortunately people buy up places as second homes or to let out as holiday lets & so the full time population dwindles.
very expensive second homes no doubt....Please tell me I am wrong Andrew...
Would love to but… yes! Expensive! Sarah :)
Those in Marlow have their 2nd homes in Wells, Norfolk. Its where the rich luvvies go 😅
They make it down here too! Sarah :)
It is lovely there but I prefer quieter places.
We didn't think it was as busy as the last few years, more enjoyable! Sarah :)
I love Polperro but not sure I would describe it as cool??
I know what you mean - picturesque? Sarah :)
I like Polperro but the rip off parking charges put me off visiting - I'm in Cornwall now (in Fowey) but won't be visiting Polperro.
1926 those guides were published
Ahhhh! Well done! We were looking for ages! Sarah :)
Always loved Polperro but sadly all the lovely art shops have disappeared & parking is extortionate.
So sad but parking fees are high everywhere and at least there is parking - imagine if they sold up?!? Sarah :)
Dewsbury😅looks better😅
Best gluten free fish and chips in Cornwall
Oh! I wish I’d known that! Sarah :)
Only thing... parking. Cost, availability.
Plenty of answers in the comments about that already! Sarah :)
Such a fun vlog. Haven't been to Polperro in years. Maybe I will go next time I visit mum and dad at home.
Sad that 70%+ of houses are rentals. Cool stories.
Lots of houses are rentals these days, but seems to be the norm these days! Sarah :)
If you run a tinpot organisation and want to raise your profile, organise a bogus survey.
Wells-next-the-Sea is not the most attractive place on the North Norfolk Coast. It was a working port with old warehouses and those hoists on the front for lifting and lowering goods to and from the upper floors, many converted into THAT SORT of expensive residential development. I suspect that it is on the list because of the yaghting fraternity who have a strong presence there and answer that sort of survey. Just to the West is Holkham Hall ..... and to the East, is Stiffkey, most famous for its' one time rector who in 1932 was defrocked on grounds of immorality.
The Bishop of Norwich was reluctant to act against the Reverend Harold Davidson but, once the newspapers had got hold of the story, upon legal advice, he felt forced to convene a "consistory court". The bishop remained reluctant throughout. The Rev Davidson claimed to have a mission to bring prostitutes to God and possibly his work was sometimes of a practical nature. Much was made of the lancing of a boil on the bottom of one Rose Ellis. The newspapers of a certain type had a field day and much was exaggerated. The village name of STIFFkey did not help. It is, I think, true to say that he was generally a good man who was much maligned but the story is good for a laugh. He took to being a seaside showman and, in 1937, was mauled to death by one of his fellow showmen, namely a lion. Although not flavour of the month in the Church hierarchy, he had been popular with a number of the locals and his body lies in the local churchyard.
Wonderful story! That would make a video!! Sarah :)
Think i saw Hastings is no16. Wouldn't call Hastings "Cool", something less cool maybe
😂
Cool is an American word….whats the English word for cool ?
Trendy is a better word. It will fall out of favour like everything after a while.
i went to Cornwall 6 times in the 60s and found the locals ignorant and prices expensive PROPER JOB as they say .
As a Cornish person, there is no answer for that really! Sarah :)
@CornishWalkingTrails
I don't blame everyone but it does show some are very anti holidaymakers
It’s pretty but living there, cool? Not so sure. With the full time population decline going as it is, in a few short decades it will be a ghost town (Village).
Extortionate rental rates and weather dependent. 2 weeks on the beach in any Caribbean island would be cheaper.
And guaranteed sunshine!! Sarah :)
