- Take a look at both these OTF knives that are very similar in size but vary drastically in price.

I have both of these knives. I love the UTX, but it sits in my safe. I carry the firecracker around the house and use it for everything. definitely worth the $20. The coating on the firecracker's handle is actually insanely durable, believe it or not.
MrZombiecorpse when people say they break easy is it because they stab a damn wall or are they talking about the switch?
the microtechs are made to be used, they are very durable
Great color choice on the 70. I'm obsessed with microtech
One of the most important things to me is ease of action. It doesn't matter how well made it is if it's hard to use.
Just like me,weak thumb😂
UTX-85 and 70 is small for me...the Ultratech’s is just the right size. Use silicone in the action...no oil. Thanks for sharing your videos
i love my ultra tech the new ultra tech 2 is nice
I'm reviving the comment section of this video.
I always thought that OTF knives were kinda gimmicky and mostly mall-ninja blades that didn't serve much actual purpose for a long time. I've collected and enjoyed knives for many (like 25) years, yet always had a preference for fixed blades and some nice, locking folders. I've even had balisongs and karambits because they are still highly useful.
But when I realized how much easier it is to carry safely, grab, deploy, retract, and stow away all with a single hand, I started liking the idea of DA OTF knives. I've had one SA OTF knife which is actually a better "fighting/defensive" knife than the DA types due to the very tight lockup, but they are also much more difficult to make safe than even a traditional folder. So I've chosen to switch from a basic "spring assisted" switchblade (4 of which I've been carrying for about 8+ years) to one of my 3 DA OTF knives.
The first DA OTF I bought was the Lightning with a dagger blade. It's a robust design, though it's got a pretty "bleh" blade on it. 440 stainless steel isn't exactly the "pinnacle" of toughness, nor does it keep an edge after cutting anything beyond paper. But the thing keeps chugging along while cutting 60+lb tension-wrapped bands on pallets for shipping. I use that cheap, shitty knife every day at work and at home without any problems. Again, the blade kinda dulls out pretty quickly, but I've ALWAYS got a fixed blade and a folder on me as well, so it wouldn't be a problem anyway.
But since I've been carrying a knife like the Lightning, I've been wondering if i should just drop the premium price tag for a premium price, such as a Microtech Ultratech or UTX85/70. They are made a lot more stout than the cheap knives but are at least 10× the price of the Lightning. So I could literally buy 10 of these cheap knives for the price of a single Microtech. If that's the case, I'd need to get more than 10 times the use/life out of the Microtech than the Lightnings just to get the same value or utility.
I will also freely admit that my favorite knife I've ever seen is, in fact, a Microtech Ultratech (whoch they also scaled down into a UTX.) The Ultratech or UTX-85/70 with a black handle and a bronze-coated Spartan Double Tanto blade is something I've wanted for quite a while now. I just haven't pulled the trigger yet, so to speak, because dropping 280-360 on a single EDC knife seems unreasonable for someone in my position. Plus, I'd probably feel bad using/abusing it on a regular basis.
I don't care about breaking one of my cheap DA OTF knives (of which I own 4) because they're just made for utility. The action on them is entirely serviceable and they are great tools to have on hand. And if i happen to need a "fighting" knife, I still carry at least 1 on my body and another in my EDC rifle bag.
Thanks for this review! I was wondering how the action was on the Firecracker. I'm purchasing it for it's size.
I was walking through an empty field one time and found a firecracker, then I lost it. Yesterday I got a new one and I do think it's worth the price, it's easy to use and my area is kind of sketchy so it's small and easy to carry if I ever need it for self defense.
Dont rely on an automatic knife for self-defense. They are too small and unreliable to be used as tactical.
@@BeardedEgg Tell that to the law makers, apparently they’re more dangerous than guns.
I can never find a UTX-70 in stock.
I bought mine used on instagram. Try Bladeforums in the automatic section or PVK.vegas . You could just pick up that firecracker from bladeops or bladeplay.com until you get the real deal.
I like knives but I'm not a collector. So even though I've been eyeing a Microtech UTX-85 or UTX-70, I can't bite because my idea of a price is somewhere around $100-$150. So anything over $200 is getting a bit steep. Some of these Microtech's go for $700 plus. I'd rather buy another Glock.
They sell the driver bits for the microtech screws on EBAY for under $10.00
I always wanted the microtech but for that outrageous price they can keep it! The most I'd pay for it is $70
It is a great knife and microtechs do have a lifetime warranty. For me, the firecracker was more fun to play with despite all of its faults and its so cheap who cares if you break/loose it.
Good luck trying to replace/service a Microtech. They have by far the worst customer support ever in knife community.
gzyp sent my Halo V into microtech and it was back in 2 weeks
I’ve always wanted a Ferrari but I refuse to pay that much so they can keep it. The most I’ll pay is 15,000.
you can find decent clones on dhgate for around 50 USD. some even say they are better than the original
I had the firecracker and a spotwelded component broke within one day of owning it. I wasn’t using it hard, and it was practically impossible to fix
Use JB weld
Send it to microtech and see if they will fix it? 🤣
I love your vids man keep up the good work and you will be the next budget bugout!!!!!
Thanks for the kind words brother.
Too bad I cannot carry either of those in Canada, but thanks for the video anyway as I would like to be able to play with one. I still like 440C it is a nice low price steel that has a nice balance between how easy it is to sharpen and how long the edge lasts.
+CanadianCuttingEdge I totally agree. Even if you don't lake it out of the house. Its still fun to open mail with.
Damn bro I feel the same!!!I own Microtechs and basically Baby them cause there Soo Fukin Expensive lol!! 200 to 500 is Alot on a knife to play with, and I know you can play if u want because believe it or not these knifes are made very well and are machines!!My combat troodon is just so Solid for a OTF,those old ones with the plastic handles and 440 blades are shit and basically a Novelty, however Microtech is the exact opposite, made with some of the best materials, with some tight tolerances!!
I agree
If you don’t want that Microtech gladly buy it from you!!
Wish you did a comparison with the rare UTX-70 2" CA-Legal model.
Only difference in the CA legal model is that the blade is shorter. Handle is exactly the same. Firing mechanism is exactly the same.
For 20$ tho what do you really expect it’s decent for its price and I don’t think anyone wants to really pay 240$ for a micro otf
for the microtech I would strongly consider it at $80
Microtech is really making bank off people all these microtech heads would be pissed If they knew the price of the labor and material used for these knives I would assume the microtech shown in this video cost max 40$ total to make and that's a steep estimate
CultivatingTrichs you have to think, all the parts and materials are sourced in the United States. The materials are high end and the blade steels are extremely premium. You also have to pay employees fair wages as apposed to slave labor being used in other countries to produce the “cheaper” knives. Completely reasonable pricing here. They also stand behind every single one of their products that go into consumer’s hands and offer a lifetime warranty for repair that most budget knife companies don’t.
@@KnicksKnives thank you!! Hand made usa lifetime warranty. Their customer service is worth the price alone I promise that.
Justin Horn I bet that cipher is sweet
I stopped buying $400 knives because I keep losing them. The pocket clips do not hold 100% of the time. If you keep it in the 5th pocket, and bend over, kiss it goodbye and $400.00
I guess it's small enough to fit in the fifth pocket, but I'd be afraid of coughing and having my sphincter trigger the blade
I got the equlivent of the firecracker directly from china. All metal handle and tanto blade and pocket clip for 5 dollars each a couple of years ago. I ordered 4 , and its been the best edc ever because I use it and carry it everywhere, I ve broken one, llost one and still have two more still functioning like the day I got them. The best ability of an edc is availability. 240 dollars? I wouldnt use it, or carry it in fear of losing it or damaging it. I remember reaching into my pocket to get my knife only to my horror it was gone. I thought two seconds so what 5 bucks? I think I would have felt differently if I had paid 240.
The biggest difference is one is a tool and one is a toy.
Just to be clear the fire cracker is legal to carry around in California?
I would never carry a 240 dollar knife as a tool. Good cheap knives have always been my go to for my edc knife.
You could use an air can with the thin tube to blow out the junk. Maybe pour rubbing alcohol inside and then blow it out
I know I’m the only clown asking but would you be up for selling your firecracker I really need to pick one up
Can the microtech clip be switch to ether side for left hand use .
The missing pocket clip is a deal breaker. Thats a mandatory requirement so that the clip can be seen hanging outside the pocket, and not be considered a concealed weapon. California native here.
Better than New York. We can’t even own one.
Yehuda Holczer - Technically, we can’t own or carry automatic knives here in California either. Only manual folders with the pocket clip showing outside the pocket. The only loophole is that if the blade length on the automatic is less than two inches long, then we can carry one and even then it’s kind of a gray area and I’ve had friends who were cited from owning the little ones. Also, two inch auto is not useful for anything much more than a mail or package opener and to add to the problem they are very hard to find as not many of the good automatic knife brands make them that small. So I do feel your pain since all the states surrounding California have more relaxed knife and gun laws where you can carry full size autos.
Colonize Mars honestly I just want one to fidget with they look so satisfying. But yeah knife laws in California suck also. Good luck anyways.
Do you think I’d be safe buying a firecracker in NJ? The site I found it on says I can but I’m not good at reading laws
I live in nj, I carry a microtech everyday.
In the uk to carry a knife in public the blade has to be 4" or under so im gonna get a Titan Blue D/A OTF Automatic Knife - Dagger Black Serrated
SaloTheArcticWolf can't be automatic in the UK......
It's below 3 inches, the blade can't lock and for god sakes mate don't carry an auto in the UK,guaranteed jail time!!!!
Hahaha im from california, how do i know more about knife laws about your country than you?
lol, that knife is very illegal in the UK.
Id love one but cant get them in the uk
i have the black one.. it's nice!
Random Fandom got the red one
Do you still have the Microtech if so would you want to get rid of it
The microtech is an Apple iPhone and the other is a generic android. They both basically serve the purpose but you pay more for the features quality and yes you also pay more for the name.
Comparing Microtech to Apple... LMFAO what a joke.
Where do you get that utx-70
How does the Microtech compare to RCT, i have a raven crest just curious to how they compare to each other..
Texas24 ravencrest is a cheap chinese made knife, rebranded and price doubled
I can attest to the RavenCrest being rebranded Chinese.
I just bought a “custom” RCT-1 and some of the “Cerekote” rubbed off from my blue jeans on the first day I carried it and I received it at 12:30 pm and it was rubbed off to the zinc allow by 5:00 pm!!
Has horrible blade play.
Go to DH Gate and search for “Andy Knives” you will be pleased!
RCT is re Branded Chinese, the problem is they are way over priced. There is a place card Midtech Knives that sells the same thing for half the price so that just shows you how much price gouged they are
i have the cheap low end otf and it works fine and is well worth the 20 dollars
Yeah honestly metal is metal
This might be a dumb question. But is this your microtech knife ?
I owned a few over time and currently have a combat Troodon only now, I sold the UTX-70. I beat it up so much it's part of the family now.
+Lemon Slush Loves Knives ahh I see, it's funny that you say that because i was going to ask if you were interested in selling it
There's nothing about the UTX that makes it a better knife in my opinion. I literally keep the firecracker on my keychain it's THAT small and incognito. If the firecracker breaks you cash in your change and buy another. I'd feel like a straight fool if I paid all that money for the UTX. The funny part is that there both probably made by the same sweat shop in China
Does anybody have a really stiff button on the utx-70? Mine has a super stiff button and seems to stick a little.
just got one yesterday started out smooth and now its rock hard wtf??
Its pretty firm, you could try throwing some dry lube on the inside and around the button.
I wish you still owned the UTX70 Id give you 280 and a firecracker lol
Got one of the firecrackers today and one of the screws fell out after playing with it for about 3 minutes
nope
Put some Lock tite on it and screw it back in.
mattinmo made in China trash.
It’s $20 what did you expect? Even Kershaw knives for $20 fall apart after 3 min
LateNightKrew I don’t know of any Kershaw knives that have done that. But I know what you mean, you get what you pay for
Do you have a lighting otf? If so is it easy to open? Want to get it for my girlfriend. also make more videos!
Did you get it? My mom can't even open it, and my left hand is awkward.
where can you buy the firecracker knife at ?
I got mine at bladeplay.com its bladehq's lower end site.
Lemon Slush Loves Knives would you like to sell the utx-70
Sold it on Instagram a while back actually.
Lemon Slush Loves Knives awww man ,why did you do that, you should have known I'd come along and wanna buy it.
haha
oh well my luck, take er easy
if you know of any body selling one hit me up
Amazon and eBay and Walmart and almost all gun and knife shop
trying to find a utx 70. anyone know where I can. everywhere seems to be out of stock.
thehollowgrind.com/store/manufacturers/microtech-knives/utx-70.html
chef7734 thank you for this link
How I wish my homework looked like
I don’t like expensive knives I’m afraid to scratch it or get dirty
your buying the microtech name, the better blade steel and the manufactures warranty!
firecracker is actually 10$
you can find those raw versions (no firecracker name) for 10$
qaching they are 20 or more if they are ten they are probably made for an action figure
you get what you pay for my first otf was a mini-infidel my fiancé got me the pair and only gave me the mini then gave me the second a year later said he didn't trust me with the full size until i proved to him i was responsible
U got a microtech... lemme get dat firecracker
I stopped using the word "switch blade". There are no blades being switched and it sounds to menacing. I say "autoknife". Sounds less threatening.
The blade is activated via a switch, i.e. the push button is a switch So yeah, it definitely has the blade ‘being switched’ open.
Ones legal in CA one isn't
I watched this video before I ever owned a microtech. These firecrackers are junk and break in a week where a micro is a lifetime knife. After breaking a lot of cheap OTFs i bought a microtech and will never go back. The turquiose UTX70 easisly sells over the retail price bummer you dont still have it Id buy it.
EL GUN DOWN what happened to the firecracker because if it stopped firing in and out just pull the blade until it clicks and itll work again
are you interested in selling the microtech?
already sold it my friend
i bought a knockoff firecracker off of wish for $11 lol
MT UTF 70 - fair price $120 ! At $240 - Total rip off /consumer exploitation ! But in free market economy, lots of consumers don’t mind or want to get ripped off !🙈
If the real one was like um $50.00 i might be closer to thinking it was worth it .
Lifetime warranty/ blade sharpening and American made microtech vs chinese owned no warranty firecracker. The price is reasonable compared to very similar top tier knives.
@@mediocrefloridaman No it isn’t, there’s a plethora of knives that are USA made, excellent companies making them, great lifetime warranties and are capable of selling high quality automatic knives all day under $50. The only, maybe, possible slight justification is the risk of legal losses due to insanely stupid federal laws about shipping otf knives across state lines. Even that doesn’t make sense as it’s technically illegal no matter where it’s made to import or sell across state lines.
@@travispratt6327 oh so you think I can't get an otf knife shipped to Florida from South Carolina, legally? You'd be wrong. Completely legal, now.
@@travispratt6327 your also wrong about them being able to be American made for under $50. You're quite ignorant, ehh?
@@mediocrefloridaman Read what you wrote. Federal law, last I checked, which was yesterday, restricts selling across state lines. Yes American made automatic knives can be had for under $50, American made OTFS are a different story, they have legal loopholes around them, hence what I said. You really are illiterate ehh? Explains why you don’t understand the laws and that I said American made knives, not specifically otfs, there’s nothing more expensive about manufacturing an otf except the legal ramifications.
Your cali knife laws are incorrect. Size of the blade does not matter, what is illegal is stiletto switchblade(automatic) so otf would be illegal. Blade cannot have an edge on left and right sight of blade. Assisted is grey area. Folding knives must be completely concealed or completely visible for all to see. Fixed blades must always be visible and blade length doesn't matter and it cannot have an edge on left and right side. Also for assisted flipper knives must have a thumb stud or disk or it will be considered as a switchblade. So in California OTF and switchblades are illegal for edc. For just collecting them and keeping them in the home it's legal
jikininki lucifer I thought assisted flippers were legal in Cali
False, I live in California & automatic knives are legal as long as the blade is under 2 inches.
....... as collectors items ONLY. NOT to carry
as long as it has a thumb stud it is fine. assisted is a grey area, and unfortunately California has far too many dick cops
as long as it has a thumb stud it is fine. assisted is a grey area, and unfortunately California has far too many dick cops
I paid 25 for my firecracker
not worth the 200. the new jedi knight model i would absolutely buy if they knocked off a few sheckles.
I 100% agree with you. That full serration boba fett one is sick.
+Lemon Slush Loves Knives oh yeah. the whole starwars line up can get everyone excited. everyone is gonna have one they love. but i just cant afford it
Btw I subbed... just to be cool 2 u
Firecracker-best for a women EDC-easy to open-means everything.$20 vs $240 no comparison. Microtech-too hard for women to open-useless.
I'll buy if u sell lol
Sold it a while back actually.
Get the best of both worlds buy the utx70 off wish LoL
Damn bro, PLEASE do some research before busting another video out like that. I know your just giving you opinion on the knives but there's alot of fluttering through.
The utx 70 is a total scam
Its a 50 knife at best.
Absolutely way over priced just like all their knives
Just to be clear the fire cracker is legal to carry around in California?
look up your local laws idiot
jaden norman shut up pussy ass bitch
