Never use smooth stones for a pathway because the smooth surfaces allow slippage. The sharp facets of crushed rock prevent slippage. Tamping crushed rock causes these facets to automatically align, resulting in a very stable surface far superior to a pathway made of smooth gravel.
Thanks for the video. I was thinking of spraying the anti-weed spray before placing the weed membrance. Also, the soil bed level is not even. Can you advise what soil to use to level the base bed? I was thinking of leveling the base bed with a 3 inch layer of Dansand NO GROW Block Paving Jointing Grout and then place the weed membrane. Is this advisable ?
Hi I have laid blue slate at the front of the house a few years ago but have now added some trees around the edges. During all of this the blue slate has got mixed up with the soil underneath and become compacted so it now looks like I've had a landslide in the garden. I've tried to rinse the soil away from the gravel with little success, it just seems to make it worse so I've now puddles that are taking forever to drain away and it doesn't look any better when they do drain away. I don't really want to buy any more blue shale to cover my mess cos that would only increase the height of the garden and is not solving the problem. There is a porous membrane underneath so I'm not sure what's going on, any advice would be appreciated. Is there an easy way of separating the soil from the shale or do I have to dig it all up and start again. Many Thanks Nigel
Hi Nigel, from what you have described it sounds like the only way to sort the problem out is to dig it up and start again sorry. The only suggestion to avoid this would be to try to further compact your soil and slate, lay a membrane over it and then cover with a thin layer of a smaller stone chipping that lays flatter than slate. However this may well compound the drainage issue so isn't really recommended.
i used weed membrane and still got weeds and grass growing through; but bare in mind , my house was built on a copse small woodland ,of which im creating an ornate mini woodland ,its took me twelve years because of my health problems and disabilities but slowly and surely it's getting there tiny bit by bit 😩
Yes unfortunately really stubborn weeds will still find a way. You can double up the layer which can help. The membrane should stop a lot of weeds but unfortunately isn't a fool proof solution.
I have 2 tones of 40mm blue slate being delivered Friday from you guys, for border for around the front of my house. 5 days straight to cut and remove bushes roots. How would you suggest getting the slate from the bulk bags to the area to be laid, would it be a case of hand balling it on, then rake level? Cheers
That's wonderful news you have purchased from us, thanks! You can hand ball it if you have it in bags though might be easier to throw the bags into a wheel barrow to move them that way. Then yes just split the bags and rake level.
Hello I have a walkway in the backyard on the backside of the garage. Which is concrete not quite leveled question can I lay some sand down and then some Pebbles. Reason being water pools on uneven part of slab
Hi Duane, the pebbles would likely sink into the sand so this isn't something we would recommend. You could put sand down and then a weed membrane on top to seperate the pebbles from the sand.
Someone dig up my yard and just left dirt I put stone gravel on top without putting plastic down first will this be a problem with insects and dirt sinking
We always recommend using a weed membrane as this will keep your stone cleaner and also stop weeds. The issue you may find now is that you get weed growth and the stones discolour quicker.
Hi Jepy, sorry we're not sure what you mean by molds? We have created a separate video on how to clean your stone but soapy water and a brush or using a power hose on a low setting can clean the gravel.
Hi Daphne, glad to hear you enjoyed the video. If the membrane is permeable so water goes through it then yes that is fine. However if it doesn't then we wouldn't recommend it as then water won't drain away and you will end up with flooding or very damp areas.

Hi Carolina, sorry but we aren't sure exactly what you are referring to . Our large slate paddlestones are used to edge the path in some areas. Thanks SWH
A white marble chipping would be fine to use if that is what you mean? We stock a product called Polar White Chippings that would be suitable so have a look at that product, anything similar would be fine.
No, if your soil is compacted and firm then you don't need a sub-base. However often people prefer to have one anyway. It is more important under an area that will be driven over.
I have a nice big yard with space on the side too. The side yard it's just sitting there looking boring..I want to use that space too..the side yard has a slope which iam thinking of removing or adding dirt to level. Hi Marco, if you choose gravel that is sized between 14-20mm then it shouldn't get stuck in shoe treads and brought into the house. This is the size we would always recommend if gravel is going to be walked over.

Yes Deborah is correct! 14mm or larger is best to deter cats 😀

Use weed membrane. It allows the water to soak down into the earth. Canvas overtime could decompose.

Can I ask do these stones go green or do they stay that nice white colour all year round ?
