Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime is hailed as one of the best prog metal albums of all time. In my opinion the songwriting and guitar playing was at it's peak for the band on this record. The twin guitar solos between Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton were full of great licks and ideas, not to mention being melodic and perfect for the song.
The solo for "The Needle Lies" from the Operation Mindcrime is a great example of beautiful phrasing even in an uptempo song like this.
Chris Degarmo takes the first half of the solo and it builds wonderfully into a fast lick before Michael Wilton takes over with some great legato ideas and phrasing of his own.
I highly recommend checking out all of the guitar solos on Mindcrime...there's a lot to learn!
For my take on this solo I did research from transcribing the solo from the original album and also watching live footage. Interestingly, it seems that Michael has changed his slightly these days, but it retains the same essence. The solo here is based on the album version. It's a burner, so loosen up those fingers and get to work!
Here is the TAB, Guitar Pro file and Jam track for you to try it yourself.

Great and thank you Nick for sharing with us! Could you also make a little video how to play the verse of this song? It seems simple but at higher speed becomes difficult - maybe you could show how to pick up the string correctly? Thank you!

Ryche fan since the EP. Glad that you played the rhythm behind the lead! i'm having a hard time picking the verses 😒 it's pissing me off, the timing has to be super clean. 🤙

Left handed guitar is so much better than right handed. I learned on a right handed guitar but it always mentally was limiting. Interesting that many lefties play a right handed guitar.
And left handed guitar actually sounds different cause the player is using different physical brain components.

I would recommend really pushing the mids for this kind of tone. There’s a couple ways you can achieve this-obviously you should have the mids on your amp cranked pretty high. You can also get a midrange bump from a tubescreamer or something like a Boss OD. Then set treble to taste, but not too high! Bass is start about midway up and then set to taste. My mids are always higher than my bass or treble.
But I’d have to play through your amp to really know for sure how to dial it in.
