I think everyone should not take the youtubers that "overland" too serious when they are telling you that you absolutely need a certain product. You can get out there with less than half these youtube sellers are saying you need. Do the research get quality where is matters! For example you don't need a catalytic guard to go out in the woods, if someone wants it they will take it.
But its purpose made 🎉
That’s why my channel is just riding trails and none of the fluff 😂
I've been "overlanding" since 1980 at 10 years old with my father and still doing it today. If you want to call camping out of the back of your truck for days at a time in the middle of nowhere. I think you guys are all crazy for buying any of this stuff. These companies aren't in the overlanding business, they're in the marketing business.
Awesome video as always Michael. Adventure is necessary and exploring is what keeps history alive.
“Why is that lens so expensive?” “Well that’s none of your business.”😂… Great vid Michael.
Great video, Michael. I have to live vicariously through you and your intrepid followers. No time or funds to have fun. So keep the adventures coming on RUclips!
Great video and great perspective. Only wish we got these more frequently on RUclips.
AWD Nissan Rogue is all I got! Father’s Day family tent, Coleman propane stove, 2nd hand store pots and pans! Fun had every time! Before that was minivan and harbor freight trailer.
I miss you Michael. Hope to see you in Mojave next month. Stay safe mate!!!
Mojave is confirmed, Ofer! See you soon!
love seeing you guys back here again!
Right on the money, Michael. Thank you as always. Cheers, J
Hey Michael! Good to hear from you! 16340 here. I'm out on the shore of a frozen lake in Alberta with my ghetto overland rig. I gotta say, I hear what you're saying, although I think there is sometimes a case of "overland tax." Either way, though, I actually appreciate the companies doing specialized overland gear, because even though I could never afford to buy most of it, I get all kinds of ideas to do the DIY/ghetto/bargain basement version, and it usually ends up being that much better from seeing the high dollar version. Cheers!
Good video Michael. You know how I feel about cost. DIY will keep it down.
Good to see you again Michael. 🙂
Cool video! Definetly a very "spicy" topic to talk about. This short videos are your best in my opinion, straight to the point, some good jokes and often pure humilty. Thanks
That market segmentation piece is real talk.
😂
This is a perfect reality check. Love all the videos.
always enjoy your videos! keep 'em coming🤠
Oh dude great video!. Long time supporter. Best to you and the channel.
The "Overland tax" to me is simple. If you believe you are being taxed don't buy it. I bought the partner camp stove. That was a tough pill to swallow but now that I have it and the pain of the wallet is over....it's a joy to use and makes my trips that much more enjoyable. 5-10-15 years from now I won't remember how I struggled to spend the cash. Only the great times with my grand children out in the woods. Like you said people need to quit being Jealous of what other folks have and just say nice rig!
I have used The Overland Tax thinking since my Boy Scout days when it comes to dehydrated food for back camping (now Overlanding). Example: 5 min oatmeal, Uncle Bens Wild Rice, Pasta, cereal, hot chocolate mix, ramen noodles are all dehydrated foods that don't cost OutDoor Store prices. During the California fires a few years ago (and occasional earthquakes) many news stations talks about having a bug-out bag. My jeep is a bug-out vehicle, only have to grab the box with all the important papers. Thanks for sharing.
Earth to Mikey! Earth to Mikey! "Sam Walton" would be envious of your Salesman Prowess.. Over and Cheers, Mate.
Excellent video and a new subscriber from Australia. 🇦🇺
I get a laugh when I read people losing thier minds over the cost of an expedition trailer; "hell, I could make that myself for 1/16th of that price!". My answer, 'fine, go ahead!' I have an aussie made camper trailer I bought used and even then it wasn't cheap. But there is zero chance I could have made it half as good for even twice what I paid for it (and I have plenty of experience building expedition trucks). Is there a 'tax'? Sometimes. But in the vast majority of situations you are getting what you paid for. Cheers from over here!
I love the "ask me how i know" hahaha
Crazy! Didn't realize you grew up a local. Im just up the road in Eureka and got a Buddy in Hydesville. Great video, glad I caught it....
My home town!
Glad to see and hear all are safe and well!
Great video, you're just not listing the overland tax items though. You're listing mostly bespoke 4x4 items. The overland tax mostly applies to a product which in one industry is dirty cheap but the second it's sold by an overlanding or car mod shop is 10x the price...eg. 12v water pumps for moving machine coolant fluid are sold as water pumps for live wells in fishing sector and as a pressured water pump for overlanding/vanlife...same situation with DC fuses or DC distribution blocks.
I'm sure you could make an entire video of things that have been sold cheap in one industry but have been rebranded for vanlife and overlanding and sold at a premium.
You are right on the spot. You don’t always have to pay top dollar for all your gear, hell most don’t even need all their gear, but the gear for safety/comms/recovery are not a spot to skimp!
Bubbles $1.29. Wedding Bubbles $9.99.
:D
Watching this video says America think overlanding is not what the rest of the world thinks. As an aussie overlanding is about long term journeys where you don’t want to take excessive risks . Rock crawling is its own thing mainly for weekenders. I i travel across continents not. A chance ill drive places like this video
We enjoy the long trips, too. Out here in CA we have a wide range of trails that link together for 100s of miles and will take you to the most remote and peaceful dispersed campsites with no light pollution and solitude and if you want to get to them, you have to climb rocks. Think of it like a Camel Trophy moment. We built our truck to do both.
I totally agree mate! Sadly Northamerica got their hands over a beatiful life style and made it a very profitable "trend". Here in Southamerica we call offroading to what northamerica do and overland to the people who is coming from Europe to travel our amazing subcontinent.
My rig is a 1949 Willys pickup truck from company called “Willys Overland “ MSRP in 49 was $1700.
In 2024 im $17k in.
I use my local shops. For suspension, body shop i spent $3200 rust repairs, off-road shop used their 40” tire machine for balancing & recommend what Bilstien shocks to get.
I love this. The lineage between Willys Overland and Jeep is pretty direct.
Killer video
Corrie calling kids sweaty on Fortnite is the best, haha.
Those Saturday AM lobbies are the worssstttt.
Spot on! Good video with a good perspective on these things. Thank you for sharing.
love the little spiked dog vest
It actually works, unfortunately he won’t move :)
Did the numbers, bought a Honda Talon and adapted my tent trailer for less than it would cost to do up my Jeep or Ram to the same capability.
* FYI, we're in Canada, so add 30 percent for the northern peso and 30 more for no market , thats why its so expensive in Canada *
One piece? Rugged Bound Supply co! Get one! Welded aluminum rack. The OG rack😊
Good talk. Yes, I've come to realize that a lot of the specialized off road gear is made by the smaller businesses. I forget the exact science from business school 20 years ago, but something to do with economies of scale and basically mass production lowers cost. These small businesses don't have that advantage. So I hate the fact I have to spend $200 for a small metal step or $2,000 for a gear rack or lightbar, some business had to take the time to engineer it, make it, store it, etc... And glad they are.
good stuff
where you been bro ? last 8 months you've been kinda MIA . hope everything-everyone is well
We’re good! The family-work-life balance reset button was required. Thank you for asking. It’s always good to check in on folks.
Was thinking the same thing
I hope you are writing a book. I would read it!
Yay!
Holy smokes, you're right, it cost money just watching this!!
Hahaha! Thank you!
@@OverlandBound for sure, and as you say, sometimes the quality is worth it!
I don't have a lot. But what I do have is lockers AND lights. 😉

Ha ha! This will be a great topic. And ya, it is an "Overland Tax" ... It's just like adding "Antique" to anything and it seems to raise the price of that Ikea product. I'm only a minute in, but I know this is going to be a doozy. I've been "off roading" and "camping" for years, and I still got caught up in it at first ... Till I saw prices! Hee hee Now when the wife and i watch RUclips videos about "overland" products, we instantly grab our phones to search it, just to see how expensive it is. The best are when you guys are at Expo's... I don't know how you guys do it! Keep a straight face when folks tell you the price... And roll with it, with a smile on your face. I couldn't do it, I'd be like, "ARE YOU F@$$! SERIOUS!?! ... For THAT CHAIR that I'd have a problem even getting out of!! AND IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A CUP HOLDER!" Ya, great poker faces for sure. I will admit, and always do, that the Overland Community has some REEEALLY cool stuff. But once I see price ... Ya, not so cool. I watched the videos, got the magazines and eventually I faded away and started saying, "it's just camping for rich people. They use the word 'Overland' to substitute for 'Four Wheeling and Camping' so they aren't in the same label as typically off roaders and campers ... Red Neck and Blue Collar stereo types." Can't be in THAT category!! Hee hee I'm from the city, was a Graphic Artist... Now in a small town, and I'm loving that my neck is going at least Pink! Hell! I drive a Camo XJ, I'm almost there. The wife and I now film our adventures... Kinda taking it seriously... Having a blast, but doing it our way. Exploring... And inexpensively. ANNND in a ground tent! What is this madness!!?!
It’s out of control. I did the 2017 Mojave road trip. I haven’t been to the overland expo in 4 years. Tired of seeing people putting the now way overpriced rtt on their rigs and then say they are overlanders. OB#2709
I FELT THAT SIGH AT 3:09 😂
I call it camping.
We’re back!
35 inch tires are now getting that overland tax since they are the most popular tire in the community .. I can’t wait for this fad to die down and prices to return to some semblance of normalcy. lol.
Where to find the foldable kitchen?
You usually get what you pay for.....💰
Why is that lens so expensive?
😂
wait. you paid $120 FOR A *SHACKLE* !?!? wow, it MUST have had 'overland' in the name! should have been $30... tops!
Que? Good joke Mike
I like you.
Can't even stand the term. But I have never paid such a tax.
Rally Point Atlanta = ???
To bad he had to mortgage his house to pay for that helo ride.
Depends. When my brother poked his eye out on the coast his daughter signed him up for a membership before the flight from the local hospital to the trama hospital. He has never seen a bill. Probably worth getting a membership. Depending on your region it could be pretty cheap. Here in the NW there seem to be two companies and they are both less then $100 annual for membership.
Get the insurance
FYI, they did save his eye, but its going to be messed up forever. Don't break wood over a log. it can come back and bite you bad.
They grow up so fast!
The Garmin Inreach devices have an optional supplemental SAR $50K or $100K plan you can buy to go with them. No mortgage yet. We are just sorting out which of the various insurances we have will pay for what.
Except RUclipsrs are DIYing this stuff for pennies on the dollar....
