Eh I kinda feel like the story was stronger in this one whereas the first film hit the comedy a bit more naturally. See to me the story's more cohesive in that everyone's plot lines fall under a set theme that being coming to terms with their family dynamics. Gamora and Nebula accepting each other as sisters Peter coming to terms with what he feels is a lack of a proper father figure only to realize he had that all along with Yondu. Yondu helping Rocket to get past his broken life and stop pushing away everyone else because they're the only family he's ever had. And they allow the most emotionally secure albeit simple character, Drax tie it all together. Everyone's plot lines intertwine in that regard and the main plot actually serves to push those individual stories. The first movie was limited in having to set up individual back stories and it's hard to intertwine those stories with them all having such varied back stories and then the main plot of the film didn't push any of those character arcs along at all they just had to come to conclusion individually in the case of Quill or not at all in terms of everyone else. But the plot regardless was still solid in the first film and the comedy, like I said, hit the mark more consistently. Vol 2 was definitely funny but scenes like Mantis reading Quill's thoughts and the whole "turd under your pillow" scene were a few of plenty of misses in terms of comedy in this movie.
Christian The first one was far more cohesive, this one just felt like a jumbled mess to me, another thing that I think people missed is the lack of music for important character moments which made it feel really awkward, like at the climax between Gamora and Nebula, it was very awkward for me because all you could hear was their grunts instead of a good score which would've really got the audience into the character's heads thus increasing immersion.
I mean cohesive in the sense that every aspect of the story runs along a central theme you're right the first movie was more cohesive plot-wise in the sense that all the characters stuck together practically throughout the entirety of the film leaving less to keep track of. But the way everything was integrated into the story wasn't as strong as in Vol 2 because like Star Lord says himself the only reason why he gets involved in saving the Galaxy is that he's "one of the idiots that lives in it" the way everyone gets involved in the plot feels more natural in Vol 2 and how the plot affects the characters' personal plot lines is tied in better. See what I mean? And as far as music goes that's a bit suggestive. Plenty people fall under the camp of thinking that when a movie is full of music in general a heavy handed score weakens an emotional scene whereas silence shows a clear shift which in turn actually builds up the emotion of the scene. There's a reason for it but whether you agree with that reason is up to you.
They should do a scene where star-bro looks under teen-groots bed and finds pages torn out from home depots garden section catalogue. With tree sap stuck to the pages.
