Oof, this was a well-needed callout. My fear likes to manifest itself as "this is such a cool idea, don't RUIN it!" and then I get hung up on not wanting sacrifice this particular idea on the altar of my "learning phase." But if I don't like the idea, then I don't want to do it, so that doesn't work either...

I really needed this talk. You don't know how many times I thought I had a good idea and gave up because it's been done.

Think of how many romance novels there are with essentially the same plot with slight changes. Think of action movies! You can do it!

@@MagdalenRose That's the thing. The criticism that these types of novels and movies have been done to death is why I hesitate. But now that I think about it, even with all the criticism, there will be more romance novels or action movies that's been done to death coming out in the future. That criticism is not going to stop them.

when I was in high school I wrote a book... IT WAS bad, so bad my mother just was like "ummm no son..." not that she didn't say I had some talent but that book was HORRIBLE... I mean I only publish poems and have more than my fair share of unfinished books on my harddrive but... that is more of wall problem I keep hitting

I have always enjoyed your channel over the years but I was blown away when I saw the drawings in your journal. I was like "so unfair, she can do everything!" 😂 Maybe for your part 2 of your book you can do a few illustrations to go along with it.
I'm a independent artist and it took me a while to get my comic done, but when I got it successfully kickstarted and printed that was an amazing feeling. Having random people contact me put of the blue to tell me how much they liked to book is a strange and wonderful feeling. I want that for you!
Hopefully I'm not being annoying with this, just anytime I see people with amazing art talent I try to encourage them.

I remember seeing you post Bearbushka a little bit ago; she’s a lot bigger than I thought! She’s also very cute (though I do wish there was a pic of her “Babadook” incarnation)

L stands for loss, but it also stands for "learn" and "lesson". You only fail if you don't try again.
Your joy for creating is infectious, and the oodles and oodles of Mags ideas are still as charming as ever. I would defend Bearbushka with my life. I might have to keep enabling you to try, try again.

pen & paper game design is fun to fail, making up rules and seeing how nothing works. engelstein & shalev's building blocks of tabletop game design is pretty comprehensive *and* what i'll use if i ever try to make a game again. full pandemic meetup recovery won't happen for a while, if ever :(

Yeah, this is kind of me with my Cyborcats comic. I put off making it for decades because I can't write and I don't have anyone to write it for me (I've had many potential writers come and go). Eventually, I realized that a previous potential writer did write the script for the first issue, so now I'm like "Fuck it! I'll make the first issue, and if that's as far as I get, at least I can say I did something!" I'm also trying to take a "don't let perfect be the enemy of good" approach where I'm trying my best, but also trying not to obsess over every little thing that isn't perfect, because doing it is better than not doing it, if that makes any sense.

You know what, I'm a software developer, I have to figure out how to tell computers to do useful things as my job. To do my job, in order from easier to harder, you have to learn how to write the code, you have to learn how to use the tools, you have to learn how to think in the software idiom, and what's probably the hardest step that I see people struggle with the most, you have to learn how to get real comfortable in a constant state of failure. Software has this really weird situation where all solved problems are done already, and new projects almost immediately errode down to all the problems you don't know how to solve, and since a solution largely either works or it doesn't, you're failing until you succeed, and then that success vanishes into the background and you move on to fail at something else.

What killed writing for me ultimately was when the first draft of my 2013 NanoWriMo project started coming true, after a fashion, in some disturbing ways. Such as, the book, where the premise was "what might the election cycle be like for the first viable Japanese-American candidate for President," had a subplot where an increasingly desperate GOP would try to make the candidate's wife being a video game critic an issue. The first draft of this book was finished 8 months before G-merG-te.
And that's just one example amongst several. This post would be way too long if I went into it more. Naturally, since then, all I've written is fan fic and even that's not something I've touched for a few years.

    This is not realistic.
It's not a matter of fear, or motivation, it's a matter ability.
    You need money.
    You need time.
    You need money.
    You need energy.
    You need money.
    You need personal connections.
    You need money.
    You need resources.
    You need money.
    This reeks of privilege.
Most of us struggle just to stay afloat.

I'd like to say you are a fantastic failure . And if I weren't my own monumental failure, I'd pick you as an inspirational failure to me too. But I can't, because I already am. Still...
    Nice.
