Hi Angie, this was a very informative. I'm considering becoming a commercial actor and thought your video was very helpful. Looking forward to more videos.
Amazing. I was looking to know a bit about commercial actors because I am thinking of hiring one to be the face of my company. I knew absolutely nothing about this when I got here. 10 minutes later I feel can speak intelligently about it. Of course, I cannot, but I got this feeling I can and this, in my opinion, is great communication. Thank you very much, Angie
I really love your attitude, I’m currently taking killians workshop, I don’t learn well when teachers are tough on you cause I mess up and get nervous, n forget everything im supposed to do, also think in person classes are better too.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! This is very helpful information. I just started my acting career and Killian's workshop is the first acting class I'm taking. I'm on the right path! Yay.
Hey Cody, I hope you had a good audition. "Good looking" doesn't matter as much as you might think. Bring that special uniqueness that only you can offer is more important!
I thought you looked familiar 😂 ! I remember those proactive commercials. I work with a young woman that has an incredible personality , and would likely be very successful doing commercials. There's also a young man at the same job site that could easily do voice work . I'm looking for ways to get them to audition , but I'm not convinced they believe me .
Not a dumb question! YES, you can 100% still book film and TV work after doing commercials. For most actors, they do all 3 simultaneously throughout their career. I do!
This was SO helpful! Thanks a bunch for this super informative video! Would you happen to know of any great commercial classes/workshops/teachers based in NYC?
I’m a teenager interested in starting an acting career, and would like to begin with commercials. I have no experience yet, but I’m eager to begin. Is this possible?
I have absolutely no acting experience but I want so badly to transition out my corporate job working a 9-5 and get from out of the cubicle. I know that it will not happen overnight and that I will have work at it but Do you have advice for someone like me?
Hello 👋 thank you for the video it was very informative. In the real world I have been blessed to be able to get started doing the commercials and billboard spots for the company I work for which has been and still is my passion and has really opened my eyes to what I want to continue to do. I just wanted to ask maybe what I should do now? Should I be looking for an agency, or maybe some kind of representation only two maybe three years into this and it comes very natural and i would love to expand my portfolio and get more experiences perhaps TV or film or just more commercials? Thanks again for the continent.
You'll want to contact SAG-Aftra directly about this, but I'm 99% sure that whatever your status was at the time you shot the project, that's how you get paid. So, no.
Hi, I just watched your video and found it very informative. I am a SAG member, achieved by working on a sitcom as a background actor for 19 episodes. Unfortunately, the show got cancelled after 1 season. I went to a SAG AFTRA CSA Senior Actors Town Hall recently and after the show met with a rep from DDO Agency. I sent her a resume and she got back to me suggesting I book an appointment with her. My question is, what should I expect at that initial meeting. She specializes in Commercial and print ads. I've never auditioned before, so I'm a little spooked. Help!
That's great! I would not put too much pressure on it; commercial meetings are just so they can see your personality, and see if you'd be a good fit for their agency. So just be yourself! They MAY have you read some commercial material, so see if you can search for some "commercial copy" online and practice it a little bit.
@@AngiePattersonYT thank you for the reply. I wasn't sure if I should be prepared to "act" or if I should treat it as a typical job interview. Being an accountant I've dressed in suits and ties for interviews, should I do the same for the DDO interview? Have you ever interviewed with DDO? Thank you.
@@rich2376 I think you should watch some commercials, look for guys that seem like your type, and wear something like they're wearing in the commercial. Probably something nice/casual, not a suit. No, I've never met with DDO.
I'm trying to get into it and I was asked to send a Commercial Self Tape in for an agency. What would that entail? Just showing how I look or should I prepare a commercial sample?
Hi Lily, I've actually never heard of that, maybe it's a new thing they do if you haven't actually worked yet. The agency should provide you with instructions.
You definitely SHOULD submit to multiple agencies. Very few will respond - that's just how it is for most of us - so you'll raise your chances by submitting to more. Meet with more than one too, so you can compare and see who is the best fit. But once you sign with them, then no, you cannot book work with anyone else. Unless they're a whole different category, like commercial and theatrical.
Hey Jake, I'd say I've shot new commercial headshots about 3 times in the past 10 years. It depends on whether your shots are working well, whether they represent you, if your look has changed you'd need to update, and sometimes the current trends for headshots can change. Always just stay in communication with your reps about it.

How do you vet a non-union commercial so you don’t get stuck with a perpetuity on a $200 one time payment and can never make another commercial in the same category ? I feel like I’ve seen you on that proactive commercial lol! ❤️
Hi! I'm not sure I understand the question.. what do you mean by "vet?" Non-union jobs are pretty straight forward; whatever the amount is on the contract you sign, that's what you get, nothing more.
So I have pretty bad acne. But it's been almost unclearable. I have tried for the past 5 years to clear it. And I am only 15. I really want to start getting into acting and whatnot. But I know that I won't be able to and I'll automatically be out because of my acne. What should I do? All the medications I've tried for the acne hasn't worked. Also, I have ADHD, and anxiety. Will both of those get in the way of me acting? I really love acting. Also, I haven't really done anything with acting before... So I am really nervous and scared...
@The Rain System Hey :) first of all, you are amazing and awesome. Acne is a stage we all pretty much go through so don’t let that get in your way. My friend went to his dermatologist and gave him creams. I also heard that a lack of some type of vitamin B causes acne. Not sure how that works, but try looking it up. I got a pimple between my eyebrows the day of my middle school graduation and also the days before my high school graduation. Lol. I used to stress about it, but it’s whatever now lol. I even name my pimples for the fun of it. Lol. Anyways, Self esteem and self love is first. :) I believe in you! I took two acting classes in my high school and my #1 tip would be to work on body language. But also put your own awesome personality in whatever role you play. Rehearse the lines to the point you feel comfortable. You are awesome. I wish you the best. May God bless and guide your paths.
@@audriam.3878 Omg, this means so much to me. You don't know how happy I am. I am actually taking up voice acting now! I got my first role! They still have to send out the scripts and everything. Legal question in regards to gym commercial I shot. The girl who was in commercial does not want to be in it now after I already shot and edited it, due to her other Zumba instructor who was never supposed to be "featured" in it to begin with. The main girl in commercial asked me minutes before we shot that she wanted her main instructor in it, but I did not want 2 instructors dancing up front....I found out later that the instructors all face the same mirror with all other dancers. So technically she could have been in the commercial, but I had asked her to wait until I got footage of the girl (in the script) and then other instructor could jump in after. This still would have cause confusion for viewers having 2 instructors featured since the main girl was also in gym shots. She needed to be the main person in all of it. She never signed a contract so can the owner still use her in the commercial even though she doesn't not want to be in it?

The people at Killian's Workshop are really unpleasant and unprofessional, so apparently the attitude starts at the top and trickles downward. You definitely can, I'm just not sure how likely they are to actually look at them. Almost every commercial agency website has submission instructions, or you can call them. But usually the best way to get a meeting is through your manager or through a client of theirs that you know.
