The fact that people can’t grasp that they’re NOT SEPARATE PEOPLE is wild. This movie explains how little regard you have for yourself when you’re offered something better. It’s like an extreme version of saying “that’s a future me problem” and then in the future hating your past self. You’re not two different people but you speak as if you are. Both Sue and Elizabeth accuse “each other” of not respecting the balance and phone guy tells them “So respect it.” Because it’s not you and her, it’s you and you. You have to respect YOU.
I agree I also feel like it's very reminiscent of the moms that are jealous of their daughters. Like they created a younger better version on themselves that they can't fully control and it's 'aging' them. Not in the literal sense but I think there's a message there too. Overall very layered especially with the repeated shows of all the OLD OLD men who are still rich and popular and famous surrounding themselves with young woman. There's a lot here.

The red dress Elisabeth scene is so relatable it’s scary. Messing up the hair/makeup, hitting your head/face? Yall seen the video of the sisters in the bathroom and the younger one keeps getting her brush caught in tangles and starts hitting her head with the brush? Almost every girl I know has had that moment, more than once in her life. It was viscerally relatable
yeah, I found this scene to be the most disturbing part of the whole movie purely because of how relatable it is. It took me back to so many nights of my life that I ve felt inadequate just by looking at myself in the mirror.
I have OCD and my compulsions heavily affect my routine of getting ready for the day. That scene hurts me in a visceral way because I used to make myself seriously late for school by doing what was effectively self harm in front of a mirror, never deeming myself good enough to leave the house. It got really bad in my teenage years and I didn't even wear make up. To this day I avoid make up because I know I'd just create new hurtful routines for myself. I still have nightmares about being late to stuff :(

The ending when she's getting ready for the new years show makes me tear up. Because when Elizabeth looks in the mirror to get ready, it's with pure hate and self-loathing. With Sue, it's pure vanity. But at the end, it's so much softer. It feels like she's putting on the makeup and jewelry for herself instead of anyone else.

The director of this film loves Cronenberg, Lynch, and has a direct affinity for saying "I know writers who use subtext, and they're all cowards." I can't say the film is my absolute favorite among horror films but it is one of most fun to discuss.

Ok I havent read this somewhere but I think the dress Sue wears for the New Year's show is inspired by Cinderella's dress which goes super well thematically too as Cinderella is a princess many girls want to be but she also has to beat the clock before she changes back into her normal -aka ugly- self.
I thought that also. I also picked up on the main colours of both Elisabeth and Sue’s wardrobe having subtle hints to the matrix and other self. Elisabeth mainly wears primary colours, she accessorised with purples sometimes but her main outfit choices were yellow, red and blue (usually navy blue). She’s the primary self. Sue wears primary colours as accessories sometimes but for the most part she wears secondary colours like purple, pink, green and baby blue. She’s secondary, only able to be made using the matrix. The Cinderella dress is one of the only times she’s wearing pure blue and it’s when Sue is experiencing the same desire to “fix” herself that Elisabeth had.

That's how Elizabeth recognizes Sue's motorcycle boyfriend. But eventually she starts to see the 'other' her as a different person, and distances herself from thinking they're the same.
Exactly. It was confirmed in the screen play that it’s shared consciousness. They talk about each other like they’re someone else the same way people talk about themselves negatively e.g. looking in the mirror and saying “YOU’RE so fat and ugly!” Instead of saying “I’m”.
It's like, a duplicate consciousness. They are the same person, it's the consciousness swapping but she did a bunch of stuff she should not have done with the switch and termination, so that happened. It would be like cloning the consciousness. But mentally she's never been able to hold onto the reality that they are the same so she can't see them as one. I think when they both awake it's supposed to be the climax of the self hate she has. This split of her identity and conflict of self. Who's the true self. They resent each other, even though they're the same person, and we see the mess they leave for each other every time. This is the whole "self-loathing" thing - 'I hate who I used to be,' but in both directions. :) It's like someone being high and not giving a shit about their sober self, and their sober selves hating the damage their high self is doing to their body.
I went into this movie blind. My mom liked the trailer and asked me to come along. And ho lee fuq brother, what a ride. My mom spent half the movie behind her hands, cuz the trailer sells it more like a regular suspense/horror type, not BODY horror. Neither of us were the target demographic. And while I wouldn't say I liked the movie, I am glad I at least experienced it.
The part when Elizabeth is not able to go out cause of how awful she feels about herself and how she looks is so real. Very upsetting, and absolutely something that every woman has experienced before
This movie does such a good job of making you switch between they are seperate people and then slapping you with no theyre not they are one. You start doing it with Elizabeth and Sue, you start seeing them as separate people and its so jarring when you are reminded. No, they are one. I love this movie
I spoke to some friends after watching the movie, that each of us had taken a moment to stop and think that we judge ourselves too harshly. This movie really made us reflect in ways we didn't think we would, honestly a favourite of the year
The "burn" on his hand is actually a birthmark. The old version of himself has it, and they show that Sue has the same birthmark as Elizabeth. Sue was picked because you have to pucker your lips.
That birthmark being also on the younger version of the guy makes no sense though. If all your "defects" carried over to the 2.0 version what would be the use of the Substance?? It is supposed to procure a fresher and better in everyway version of you. Elizabeth's age and ailments do not transfer to Sue. The birthmark was just a lazy McGuffin bc they do not trust the viewer to make that connection on their own...
I absolutely love body horror because of how much I can feel it. It's a bit different from gore heavy movies because it's more about our relationship with our bodies than what happens to it. It's the only time I want to be grossed out for the integrity of the story, honestly. I love Videodrome for that reason. I think the directing can make something disgusting more personal. To me, bodies are naturally "gross" so these values are placed on things most can't control. I personally think aging is more attractive because it shows you survived life. It's laugh lines, and getting stuffed during dinner, and the little bumps you made it through. A totally smooth person is boring. It's just a child. Thank you so much for doing this movie! It's so great to hear your personal thoughts on crazy shit like this. It asks a lot of good questions about image, and being way too critical of stupid things that only matter to a certain type of people who are way more fucking fowl than anyone else. Same! The chicken thigh scene is so cathardic to me because it looks exactly what my knee feels like (it is permanently dislocated) and I can relate completely to that scene in some way. Body horror is definitely the best kind of horror imo

I remember my dad used to tell me to not dye my hair because I'll start to go grey earlier. Of course, old wives' tale, but I still dyed my hair, and I've started going grey when I hit maybe 27 or 28. It's only like one stripe, but I watched a lot of older trans people on TikTok, and one of them said, "grey means you're here". And that killed me, because yeah. Through all my trials and tribulations. I'm still alive. And I'm so happy I can get grey and grow wrinkles. Because there's people like me who don't get that opportunity.

My theatre experience for The Substance was one of pure respect for the art and tension… and laughter when it mattered. Granted, it was an indie theatre and I’m grateful for that. A more mainstream audience would have made this terrible. Honestly one of the finest films I’ve seen on a big screen in a very long time.

The Substance was one of my favorites of the year for sure. Demi Moore destroyed that role. I really recommend this directors first film “Revenge” as well. It’s brutal but so good.

@@MariaMacedow yeah, its one thing if Elizabeth can't remember what happens in Sue's body because she can't handle being in a young body but why would she not remember what happened when she was in her origina body once she became Sue again? only explanation would be that transferring over causes her to lose her memories, which seems unlikely given other things that happened like Sue knowing about the food and schedule and everything, 503, the number to call, etc. they just did a very poor job showing that they share memories but Elizabeth doesn't want to acknowledge that they are the same person.
Yeah, "Sue" is just Elizabeth deep in a week longer bender under the influence of something she's addicted to, she's going to have different reactions, thoughts, and feelings when "sober".
I saw _The Substance_ a few weeks ago. I'd heard it was body horror but even I was amazed at How Much body horror it was. I too wondered about there being No Payment, but I'm relatively sure there was a mention it was sort of like being a Human Trial for the procedure. By the time she had gone full Elephant Man, most of the audience was long-since laughing with the jet black comedy as I was. Did you notice in the ending credits the Special Thanks to all the background that got blood splattered...?
Went into the theater for this one with zero prep or spoilers - all i knew was body horror. Ending blew me away and the dark comedy aspect was flawless. Just a fantastic movie with a message that it sledgehammers into your head over and over. They used 35,000 gallons of fake blood for the finale I believe
I watched the substance and could not tell you whether I liked it or not. It’s not bad! You really can’t say it’s bad, it’s artfully done and obviously you get the eating disorder/substance abuse metaphors, the escalation of it all, the amount of dialogue, the explicity of the awful disgustingness of self destruction, I get it and it’s very well done. But I can’t say I like it? Not in the way that I’d want to watch it again
I can say it's bad, at least in my opinion. Demi Moore's performance was the only enjoyable part of it. The sound design was exactly the same as every horror movie since Hereditary. It has absolutely nothing to say and no respect for its audience. It makes its point in the first fifteen minutes, and after that, it bashes that point repeatedly into your head, because it assumes everybody watching it has a ridiculously thick skull and needs to be told something a hundred times before they learn it. Yes, women (especially in the entertainment industry) are only valued for their looks and sex appeal, and once they "stop being attractive" to the mass market then they get discarded and treated as less than human. Most of us figured that out at the age of 15. It doesn't expand upon that point, it doesn't have anything unique to say, it just keeps reiterating itself over, and over, and over, and over, hoping to score brownie points because it is morally correct in the point that it is trying to make. The movie is a great big nothing. It isn't even good at making the point; half of the time we spend with Sue is just slow-mo shots of her body, nude or clothed. I understand that it isn't trying to be subtle, but you don't make a point about how bad something is by doing that exact same thing. I can't say "I'm against racism!! I'll show how anti-racist I am by saying the hard r over and over again, but it's okay, I'm the bad guy here!". The movie is not intelligent or innovative enough to be doing what it is trying to do. The Barbie movie had more poignant critiques of the patriarchy, and it was made for children. The actress who plays Sue is like trying to watch cardboard act in all of the scenes except for the one where actual horror stuff is going on, and the story makes absolutely zero sense. I'm not saying it's supposed to be realistic, I get it, it's supposed to be satirical, but come on; We have this actress whose biggest credit and achievement in life is that she hosts a morning dance show, and we're somehow supposed to believe that she has a star on Hollywood Boulevard? And now Sue is hosting the Los Angeles New Year's Eve show?? After what, two months of hosting another morning dance show?? I understand that you have to suspend your disbelief with movies sometimes, but the movie is so unrealistic that it breaks immersion and takes you out of it.

I remember seeing the trailer after the festival run... Once I saw Coralie Fargeat's name, I was SOLD... as soon as a preview screening became available back in Sept (about 2 weeks before it opened), I jumped at the chance... I LOVED her first movie, "Revenge"... should check it out.
She looked like the Elephant Man at the end, which I'm wondering if that was deliberate, to highlight how people no longer see someone who isn't perfect as a human being.
I really like its depiction of substance abuse. I think she "Elisabeth" remembers what sue did but not fully just bits and pieces like every when someone is on any other substance. Its like seeing your drunk version on video. You remember bits and pieces but not all and you are whole different person and hate what you did when you were drunk. And like any other substance if you use it with moderation and control you could have its "bliss" forever. But if you start abusing it and overdosing then your "bliss" is longer but you are also eating away from your original self. No other substance abuse movies show this side of it. Its always overdose and you are dead. This movie is beautiful from theme to style to music. I love every part of it. Practical effects are just chefs kiss it looks so good and disgusting.

I kept seeing this on a site I shall not name when I was looking for something to watch, and kept passing it by not thinking much of it. Then I watched the trailer one night because there was nothing else to watch, gave it a shot, and dear god. I was not expecting to see one of the wildest movies since Tusk.
Honest to God my favorite modern horror film in a long time. Excellent writing, performances, and the special effects were nothing short of stellar. It's going to be hard to top this one, at least for me.
This movie hits a ton of notes that are on point for Hollywood/self image for women and how vein society’s culture is. When there’s good writing behind a movie like this, it really works. When bad writing happens with big companies (not gonna mention the mega corps name), they dump more money into backpedaling their ideas, reshoot for a year, or backpedal the PR side of things to keep their image clean for the majority. This movie needed none of that. It was made, it has a full plot line/resolution, and it all makes sense. I miss movies like that. Kudos for reviewing this.

yeah, I found this scene to be the most disturbing part of the whole movie purely because of how relatable it is. It took me back to so many nights of my life that I ve felt inadequate just by looking at myself in the mirror.
I have OCD and my compulsions heavily affect my routine of getting ready for the day. That scene hurts me in a visceral way because I used to make myself seriously late for school by doing what was effectively self harm in front of a mirror, never deeming myself good enough to leave the house. It got really bad in my teenage years and I didn't even wear make up. To this day I avoid make up because I know I'd just create new hurtful routines for myself. I still have nightmares about being late to stuff :(
I think they DO remember, but it’s like when you’re drunk and do things you regret or wouldn’t otherwise. It feels like it’s another person, but it’s you.

But at the end, it's so much softer. It feels like she's putting on the makeup and jewelry for herself instead of anyone else.

The "control yourself" read in addition to Demi waking up and screeching following Sue's abuse of the substance (the one right before the cooking scenes), and then Sue's growls as she goes after Elisabeth....idk, man, something about how they do them just screams, "You will never recreate the perfection of that line read."
Ok I havent read this somewhere but I think the dress Sue wears for the New Year's show is inspired by Cinderella's dress which goes super well thematically too as Cinderella is a princess many girls want to be but she also has to beat the clock before she changes back into her normal -aka ugly- self.
I thought that also. I also picked up on the main colours of both Elisabeth and Sue’s wardrobe having subtle hints to the matrix and other self. Elisabeth mainly wears primary colours, she accessorised with purples sometimes but her main outfit choices were yellow, red and blue (usually navy blue). She’s the primary self. Sue wears primary colours as accessories sometimes but for the most part she wears secondary colours like purple, pink, green and baby blue. She’s secondary, only able to be made using the matrix.
The Cinderella dress is one of the only times she’s wearing pure blue and it’s when Sue is experiencing the same desire to “fix” herself that Elisabeth had.

That's how Elizabeth recognizes Sue's motorcycle boyfriend. But eventually she starts to see the 'other' her as a different person, and distances herself from thinking they're the same.
Exactly. It was confirmed in the screen play that it’s shared consciousness. They talk about each other like they’re someone else the same way people talk about themselves negatively e.g. looking in the mirror and saying “YOU’RE so fat and ugly!” Instead of saying “I’m”.

Because they are one she can't comprehend these 2 different lives are both her. All these actions she gets mad at were things she did but she's speerated it in her mind. (idk if I explain good lol)

I went into this movie blind. My mom liked the trailer and asked me to come along. And ho lee fuq brother, what a ride. My mom spent half the movie behind her hands, cuz the trailer sells it more like a regular suspense/horror type, not BODY horror. Neither of us were the target demographic. And while I wouldn't say I liked the movie, I am glad I at least experienced it.
The part when Elizabeth is not able to go out cause of how awful she feels about herself and how she looks is so real. Very upsetting, and absolutely something that every woman has experienced before
This movie does such a good job of making you switch between they are seperate people and then slapping you with no theyre not they are one. You start doing it with Elizabeth and Sue, you start seeing them as separate people and its so jarring when you are reminded. No, they are one. I love this movie
I spoke to some friends after watching the movie, that each of us had taken a moment to stop and think that we judge ourselves too harshly.

The "burn" on his hand is actually a birthmark. The old version of himself has it, and they show that Sue has the same birthmark as Elizabeth. Sue was picked because you have to pucker your lips.

I absolutely love body horror because of how much I can feel it. It's a bit different from gore heavy movies because it's more about our relationship with our bodies than what happens to it. It's the only time I want to be grossed out for the integrity of the story, honestly. I love Videodrome for that reason. I think the directing can make something disgusting more personal. To me, bodies are naturally "gross" so these values are placed on things most can't control. I personally think aging is more attractive because it shows you survived life. It's laugh lines, and getting stuffed during dinner, and the little bumps you made it through. A totally smooth person is boring. It's just a child.

Same! The chicken thigh scene is so cathardic to me because it looks exactly what my knee feels like (it is permanently dislocated) and I can relate completely to that scene in some way. Body horror is definitely the best kind of horror imo

I remember my dad used to tell me to not dye my hair because I'll start to go grey earlier. Of course, old wives' tale, but I still dyed my hair, and I've started going grey when I hit maybe 27 or 28. It's only like one stripe, but I watched a lot of older trans people on TikTok, and one of them said, "grey means you're here". And that killed me, because yeah. Through all my trials and tribulations. I'm still alive. And I'm so happy I can get grey and grow wrinkles. Because there's people like me who don't get that opportunity.

My theatre experience for The Substance was one of pure respect for the art and tension… and laughter when it mattered. Granted, it was an indie theatre and I’m grateful for that. A more mainstream audience would have made this terrible. Honestly one of the finest films I’ve seen on a big screen in a very long time.

The Substance was one of my favorites of the year for sure. Demi Moore destroyed that role. I really recommend this directors first film “Revenge” as well. It’s brutal but so good.

@@MariaMacedow yeah, its one thing if Elizabeth can't remember what happens in Sue's body because she can't handle being in a young body but why would she not remember what happened when she was in her origina body once she became Sue again? only explanation would be that transferring over causes her to lose her memories, which seems unlikely given other things that happened like Sue knowing about the food and schedule and everything, 503, the number to call, etc. they just did a very poor job showing that they share memories but Elizabeth doesn't want to acknowledge that they are the same person.
Yeah, "Sue" is just Elizabeth deep in a week longer bender under the influence of something she's addicted to, she's going to have different reactions, thoughts, and feelings when "sober".

I too wondered about there being No Payment, but I'm relatively sure there was a mention it was sort of like being a Human Trial for the procedure.
By the time she had gone full Elephant Man, most of the audience was long-since laughing with the jet black comedy as I was.

Went into the theater for this one with zero prep or spoilers - all i knew was body horror. Ending blew me away and the dark comedy aspect was flawless. Just a fantastic movie with a message that it sledgehammers into your head over and over. They used 35,000 gallons of fake blood for the finale I believe
I watched the substance and could not tell you whether I liked it or not. It’s not bad! You really can’t say it’s bad, it’s artfully done and obviously you get the eating disorder/substance abuse metaphors, the escalation of it all, the amount of dialogue, the explicity of the awful disgustingness of self destruction, I get it and it’s very well done. But I can’t say I like it? Not in the way that I’d want to watch it again

I can say it's bad, at least in my opinion. Demi Moore's performance was the only enjoyable part of it. The sound design was exactly the same as every horror movie since Hereditary. It has absolutely nothing to say and no respect for its audience. It makes its point in the first fifteen minutes, and after that, it bashes that point repeatedly into your head, because it assumes everybody watching it has a ridiculously thick skull and needs to be told something a hundred times before they learn it. Yes, women (especially in the entertainment industry) are only valued for their looks and sex appeal, and once they "stop being attractive" to the mass market then they get discarded and treated as less than human. Most of us figured that out at the age of 15. It doesn't expand upon that point, it doesn't have anything unique to say, it just keeps reiterating itself over, and over, and over, and over, hoping to score brownie points because it is morally correct in the point that it is trying to make.
The movie is a great big nothing. It isn't even good at making the point; half of the time we spend with Sue is just slow-mo shots of her body, nude or clothed. I understand that it isn't trying to be subtle, but you don't make a point about how bad something is by doing that exact same thing. I can't say "I'm against racism!! I'll show how anti-racist I am by saying the hard r over and over again, but it's okay, I'm the bad guy here!". The movie is not intelligent or innovative enough to be doing what it is trying to do. The Barbie movie had more poignant critiques of the patriarchy, and it was made for children. The actress who plays Sue is like trying to watch cardboard act in all of the scenes except for the one where actual horror stuff is going on, and the story makes absolutely zero sense. I'm not saying it's supposed to be realistic, I get it, it's supposed to be satirical, but come on; We have this actress whose biggest credit and achievement in life is that she hosts a morning dance show, and we're somehow supposed to believe that she has a star on Hollywood Boulevard? And now Sue is hosting the Los Angeles New Year's Eve show?? After what, two months of hosting another morning dance show?? I understand that you have to suspend your disbelief with movies sometimes, but the movie is so unrealistic that it breaks immersion and takes you out of it.

I remember seeing the trailer after the festival run... Once I saw Coralie Fargeat's name, I was SOLD... as soon as a preview screening became available back in Sept (about 2 weeks before it opened), I jumped at the chance... I LOVED her first movie, "Revenge"... should check it out.
She looked like the Elephant Man at the end, which I'm wondering if that was deliberate, to highlight how people no longer see someone who isn't perfect as a human being.
I really like its depiction of substance abuse.
I think she "Elisabeth" remembers what sue did but not fully just bits and pieces like every when someone is on any other substance. Its like seeing your drunk version on video. You remember bits and pieces but not all and you are whole different person and hate what you did when you were drunk.
And like any other substance if you use it with moderation and control you could have its "bliss" forever. But if you start abusing it and overdosing then your "bliss" is longer but you are also eating away from your original self. No other substance abuse movies show this side of it. Its always overdose and you are dead.
This movie is beautiful from theme to style to music. I love every part of it. Practical effects are just chefs kiss it looks so good and disgusting.

This movie hits a ton of notes that are on point for Hollywood/self image for women and how vein society’s culture is. When there’s good writing behind a movie like this, it really works. When bad writing happens with big companies (not gonna mention the mega corps name), they dump more money into backpedaling their ideas, reshoot for a year, or backpedal the PR side of things to keep their image clean for the majority. This movie needed none of that. It was made, it has a full plot line/resolution, and it all makes sense. I miss movies like that. Kudos for reviewing this.

It's like a drug addiction, you ride out the high until you sober up and get angry at your past self for fucking up your current self but you can't wait to get high again to stop feeling like shit. It's a nonstop cycle of self-destruction. It can be confusing to understand if whether or not they share a consciousness but they do. Because of Elisabeth's intense self-loathing, she sees Sue as a separate person, the perfect version of her. Switching to Sue is her high.
