I think Leto wanted to be in a serious drama about a disabled doctor trying to cure a disease to compensate for childhood trauma and ending up causing more suffering until he learns to accept death and sacrifices himself at the end, not a superhero movie. It’d have been better if he had phoned it in like Dakota.
I think it’s another case of Ghost Ship press junket. afterward Johnson said that the script was basically unrecognizable from the one she signed on for, so presumably she saw an interesting initial script and then saw it become the drivel that was on screen by the time she showed up to film Madame Webb. Ugh I hate Leto's insistence to """method act""" when that's not even what this is 😠 Actual method acting is being as authentic as possible *while actively filming*, not being an inconvenient asshole to everyone on set. Examples of actual method acting would be if a character has an extensive background in skydiving & is very confident with it, to authentically convey that confidence, the actor would go skydiving a bunch. In Morbius's case, method acting would be interviewing adult disabled people about what their life is like, what they feel when similar things happened to them as what happens to Morbius (bullying of the disability, hardships with work, education, & relationships, etc) and learning how someone moves with that type of mobility aid in order to replicate it. Not insisting to use the mobility aids between takes/scenes 😑 and slowing down production because of it
Morbius is a prime example of Sony not understanding the source material they’re borrowing from. Adaptations can always do exactly that…ADAPT…but this is so veered from anything good that the character was that it’s just laughable. Not to mention…Morbius is not a leading man character nor has he ever been.

Really some short of short, semi-horrory/drama/angst series would have been way more fitting for the type of character Morbius is... which is why the comics are as they are, him angsting while killing murderers and/or werewolves while giving the supporting cast enough time and stakes (literal and figurative). Really for a movie like this, it would have been much better to pair him with Blade, so you can get the guy who actually has the obligatory hero's journey, and they can play off of each other.

Morbius was Leto’s hero fantasy where he got to play the super badass and intelligent broody antihero, and jerkoff his own ego. Matt Smith was unironically the best part of the movie. Was he award winning? Of course not. But I thought he was an appealing villain whose motive made sense. He’d spent his entire life inferior and weak and became drunk on the power.
Matt can do more than time travel. He's a treat in any movie. I think it's how he plays off of his accent. It's so over the top and it works so wonderfully.

Interesting little fact about morbius: The first movie that was supposed to feature Morbius as a character was one of the first Blade movies (most likely the second one), but since the original director left the franchise and Guillermo del Toro took over for the second movie it was scrapped as an idea. You can find the original deleted ending of the first Blade movie on youtube and I believe the OG director confirmed in a later interview that the blurry 4 pixel tall figure at the end was supposed to be Morbius.
You know what makes these movies crossing over with Tom Holland's Spiderman universe really weird? The tone of this movie and Madame Web seems to completely conflict with the tone of all Marvel main plot movies.
The silliest part of this movie is that Morbius spliced the gene within vampire bats responsible for anti-coagulating properties in their saliva. Not their ability to fly, echolocate, even get nutrients from blood, just the saliva part. Even if we're accepting that the bat genes will give him powers, why would the genes he chose give him any powers? Why not make them radioactive bats or something? Anything to make this make some kind of sense even within the MCU. Either explain it well or dont explain it.

Morbius would have been okay..... if it came out 20 years ago. I don't really get Sony's insistense to let/force studios do 'Basic Superhero Film' stuff after Marvel exhausted that avenue already, especially on characters that very much don't even fit that mold. For all its faults, at least Venom went properly off the rails and indulged the very specific type of Venom fans, but Morbius did just enough to feel off to comic fans while not being gay *enough* to fangirls, and Leto doesn't have the same scenery chewing charm thats entertaining on its own. Really Marvel is again the one on the right track on giving weirder superheroes short shows, because stuffing characters like Moon Knight or Werewolf By Night into a generic two hour movie just isn't fitting for the character.
Force of habit? They get it into their heads that somebody is a great actor because of a role or two that they did, and then they keep casting them. The last good movie I remember him in was "Blade Runner 2049," and he was easily the least memorable part of the story.
He is actually a great actor. I don't like his attitude and personality but that doesn't take away from his singing and acting. Just because a movie sucks doesn't mean the actors in it suck. It wasn't his fault. He could do less method and quit being so annoying and hard to work with sure. His acting is still really great. Especially Requiem for a Dream

Honestly, considering I have liked Marvel's efforts less and less since prior to Infinity War ending, my opinion on the much maligned Morbius surprised me. I went in expecting to hate it and walked out with only two solid complaints. My first complaint is that the film significantly changes the nature of his power set, making Morbius into an actual blood-drinking vampire. In the books, Morbius is a genetically created mutant, or "Mutate," like Spiderman and Deadpool, and not an actual undead vampire. In the books Morbius is a "living vampire" that feeds through sucking out life energy through holes in his hands. My other, much larger complaint is that they tried to cram waaaay too much into a movie that short, making everything feel extremely rushed, and that was really what I feel was the downfall of the movie.

one part of this movie i could not let go was how they kept on reusing the same effect where they'd be doing the morbing powers thing soaring super fast and then they'd slow it down and show a close up slow motion shot. Well, it's a cliche of the superhero genre now that the villain is just the evil version of the hero, with the same powers and abilities... and in this movie, the same disease. Plus, there's no other narrative reason for Milo to be in the movie otherwise.

The final after credit scene was Sony flexing its hubris believing that Morbius would open the Sinister Six franchise into the Spiderverse.
At this point, it feels like hubris is all Sony has behind these films.

Madame Web (IN THE COMICS) is a far better character and is literally at the center of spiderman's (and the spider people's) existence at all. The villain in Madame Web is not even a fucking villain he's an ally to the spider people LIKE MADAME WEB. Morbius is important to blade which is also getting folded into the MCU whenever they can figure that shit out.
Blade? Oh, god, they're not going to bring the split-jaw, proboscis tongue vampires with them, are they?

I don't really get Sony's insistense to let/force studios do 'Basic Superhero Film' stuff after Marvel exhausted that avenue already, especially on characters that very much don't even fit that mold. For all its faults, at least Venom went properly off the rails and indulged the very specific type of Venom fans, but Morbius did just enough to feel off to comic fans while not being gay *enough* to fangirls, and Leto doesn't have the same scenery chewing charm thats entertaining on its own.
Really Marvel is again the one on the right track on giving weirder superheroes short shows, because stuffing characters like Moon Knight or Werewolf By Night into a generic two hour movie just isn't fitting for the character.

Force of habit? They get it into their heads that somebody is a great actor because of a role or two that they did, and then they keep casting them. The last good movie I remember him in was "Blade Runner 2049," and he was easily the least memorable part of the story.
He is actually a great actor. I don't like his attitude and personality but that doesn't take away from his singing and acting. Just because a movie sucks doesn't mean the actors in it suck. It wasn't his fault. He could do less method and quit being so annoying and hard to work with sure. His acting is still really great. Especially Requiem for a Dream

What gets me, is Morbius is a bad ass character! Just look at Midnight Sun's. He is a "living" vamp. None of the weaknesses all of the baddassary.
I hate that I noticed this but the part where he bounces the ball against the wall is a call back to the 30 seconds to Mars video for The Kill. He did the exact same thing.

Like these 4 kids have a particular vendetta against disabled kids that they can’t even seen and are stuck inside, and they just, hang out outside that building hoping for a rare chance to bully them and have to settle for pointing at the building and laughing sometimes

Honestly, considering I have liked Marvel's efforts less and less since prior to Infinity War ending, my opinion on the much maligned Morbius surprised me. I went in expecting to hate it and walked out with only two solid complaints. My first complaint is that the film significantly changes the nature of his power set, making Morbius into an actual blood-drinking vampire. In the books, Morbius is a genetically created mutant, or "Mutate," like Spiderman and Deadpool, and not an actual undead vampire. In the books Morbius is a "living vampire" that feeds through sucking out life energy through holes in his hands. My other, much larger complaint is that they tried to cram waaaay too much into a movie that short, making everything feel extremely rushed, and that was really what I feel was the downfall of the movie.
I'm torn between wanting to watch the video and not wanting to ruin my blissful morby ignorance

one part of this movie i could not let go was how they kept on reusing the same effect where they'd be doing the morbing powers thing soaring super fast and then they'd slow it down and show a close up slow motion shot. I don't know if i just focused on it too hard but i swear to god it happened so many times i lost count

Well, it's a cliche of the superhero genre now that the villain is just the evil version of the hero, with the same powers and abilities... and in this movie, the same disease. Plus, there's no other narrative reason for Milo to be in the movie otherwise.

One of the few reviews I disagree with you , Madam Web was boring as hell and not even in a “it’s so bad it’s entertaining” way . With this , at least the action scenes were decent and I actually liked how Morbius looked whenever he turned full vampire .
