Dhruv Rathee's intention was not to criticize Bollywood as a whole; it's just that he wants Bollywood to maintain its soul, as it used to be, critically. He wants Bollywood to learn from their past. The majority of the South Indian movies becoming blockbusters has something to do with whatever he explained as the root cause. He wants Bollywood to learn from their past. Apparently, even I don't watch ninety percent of new Bollywood movies because of the same reason. Guys like me have stopped watching this stuff; there is a reason. The things explained by Dhruv were the things that were already on my mind. By the way, I am from South India, but I know Hindi very well, along with my mother tongue. I don't have problems watching Hindi movies, but the fact is I watch old Hindi movies, not the new ones. That's it.

Dhruv is right, if now Bollywood's sole aim is to make Action movies then audience will rather prefer Hollywood action movies, with 10 times better vfx, better action and better storyline.

Its same story everywhere where filmmakers are more driven by ideologies or pure thirst for money than providing entertainment hence you get projects like dhoom 4 and RDJ dr. Since action has more audience bhartiya filmmakers are going towards action

Theatres, distributors, small-time actors, writers, technical crew, even menial workers cannot sustain with a few movies. The industry needs feequent sustinance. This is a problem with all movie industries today, but it is acute in Hindi. Instead of 5 or 10 big hits, we are talking about 2 or 3. That just isn't enough. Bollywood is on the same path as Indian media houses. Nobody is doing journalism anymore. It's all about creating buzz online and indulging in political propaganda. Bollywood is doing the same. Just like.. we are so hopeless with journalism that we treat few individuals as Gods because they are presenting half decent content in the name of news. But we tend to forget the very simple fact that they also are not presenting news anymore. They are done with reporting. They are only presenting opinions and analysis on topics that are trending. In the same manner, we are now praising movies that are in reality very mediocre in terms of writing and characterisation. I'm not giving examples of it because people may get upset by it. It's not that I'm praising older Bollywood movies. In another comment I talked about how people like us are never represented on big screens. Even though I hated most of these hindi movies, in a way they were examples of our own societal failure. They used to appeal to certain sections of society. But not anymore. Also...I agree with one of the points that is raised by Dhruv which is I also hate how 20 something marketing professionals are deciding everything. It is happening everywhere. Be it social work, media, writing, art, music, health... Everywhere. Especially politics. They are not rooted with Indian reality. OSR don't understand the Indian class/caste system and they don't have enough humility to at least not comment on topics they don't understand. In our country the educational divide is so high that people who boast fancy degrees don't have experience/expertise in ground realities. They come from specific classes, don't speak the languages of masses, don't follow the same culture. Right now at the political level people are being forced to act like we all practise the same culture but it's not the reality. People who studied at Harvard think they are the right person to decide what is right for us. And I'm saying this in terms of culture, politics, cinema and everything. While they never lived in rural regions, never worked there and didn't even try to fill all these gaps.
So... Yeah. 20 something corporate individuals are the problem (I'm not including those who are not doing these things by their own choice). They dominate these spaces, they create the hierarchy while pretending to be liberal. In media houses, journalists/reporters can't decide which stories would get published, in social work sectors, experienced professionals don't get to design the program/policies, in showbizz writers are essentially powerless and in politics everything is decided by fundamentalists/dynasty politicians/rich billionaires. So yeah... People who don't understand other languages/culture and burdened with life's unpleasant realities won't be able to enjoy meaningful movies from other film industries. They will end up watching garbage content in other languages as well. So they will never get the taste of good quality content from other film industries and won't demand anything from Bollywood. Lapata Ladies are made by urban upper class for urban upper class to satiate the urban upper class of "little Indianism" they lack in their daily lives. It is actually too simplistic, very caricaturish movie with condescending tone.

Actually Corbin, in early days when it was just the beginning of the company trade/rule. there was actually a lot of genuine intermingling between the British and Indian population specifically in the bengal area. A lot of records of British officers leaving their wealth to their Indian families in their wills, this how ever was then snuffed out as the company rule gained power and saw resistance, so not to white wash the horrors the British committed, but important to remember they were just traders and had small outpost for like a 100 years.

It is good that OSR is watching such videos on this topic and broadening their horizons but still feel Rick and Korbin don't have the full knowledge or expertise to comment on this topic.
I mean just the fact that Rick took good five minutes to check his list and still couldn't come up with a hindi movie of this year which he liked tells you about his memory and knowledge on this topic.
No hate, I know they are doing their best to keep up to date with things going on in India but there is only so much you can understand being a foreigner.
Like I am sure they have very little understanding of how the Indian box office really works. For starters Shah Rukh Khan is the last one to be blamed for charging high fees as an actor. As far as I know SRK, Salman, Aamir all of them have themselves produced 90% of their movies starring themselves in the last 12-15 years.
Only exception of that 10% is when they are doing a YRF or Dharma film. In which case they don't charge a fee upfront but take back ends on the profit.
Mostly if their film flops, they themselves lose their own money. If it does well, entire bollywood ecosystem benefits.
The problem is with the other actors who call themselves stars are charging in excess of 10cr per film and many times their film is not even able to recover that amount. It is in these cases that production companies face losses, go bankrupt, theatres run empty making losses screening their film.
All of these combined with numerous post pandemic reasons is why Bollywood as a whole is failing as an industry currently. Earlier pre-pandemic you would have atleast 1 good movie releasing every week or every 2 weeks which could be watched by going to theatres. Right now at max there is one bollywood movie per month releasing which is worth watching in theatres. How will the theatres make money in such a scenario, how will they be able to maintain their properties, equipment and pay their staff. No wonder the price of popcorn keeps increasing, theares literally forced to run old popular classic movies, cause there is no new movie to show, and the ones releasing, no one is even willing to give them a chance.

Business people need to be held accountable. Their job is to invest money but things went bad when they thought they knew how to make movies. They are the nerds ruining the vibe of the party. The sudden rise of making quick money is shocking, which tbh is heavily inspired by American capitalism and success of MCU particularly.
No middle class person is going to spend ₹200 on more than movies each month when there are multiple movies out in a month. I would rather spend that on any OTT and watch twice the amount of movies which are better.

One doesn't need to agree with Dhruv and can have their own opinions and analysis. But the biggest problem with Bollywood is... They are making so called hindi movies by sidelining hindi speaking actors/writers/directors and the culture of Hindi speaking states. In Hindi movies (those whose storylines are based in UP/Bihar) they present the kind of reality that is superficial and doesn't exist. They misrepresent and make light of serious situations on the ground. They don't care about people who are actually living those realities. Hindi movies are made by those who aren't not from Hindi speaking states, don't speak the language and definitely don't understand the nuances of our culture. This particular concern is neglected by Dhruv but this is the most important. And OSR is not an eligible party to understand it. Now.. When you watch content from other countries (I personally don't like Hollywood) they insist on maintaining their own identity. They respect their own culture (both in negative/positive context), period. I feel ashamed when I watch their propaganda movies/shows... They are better written/acted/directed than our so-called good movies.
People like me never felt represented on the big screen so we are habitual of this treatment. But tell me honestly, do you guys think you are being represented on big screen? Nowadays even people from dominant caste/class/gender don't find proper representation in Bollywood movies. And this is not a very good sign.

Akshay shines when he's playing himself in movies. He's a great entertainer just like Salman Khan. His most memorable character 'Raju' is just him with different name and less money. Both Akshay Salman are very limited actors who give a good performance only if there's a good director who can take that performance out of them. Also both have stopped trying to act and are now just lazily hamming and minting money through their goodwill.

Corporate greed is always going to ruin things by taking away the soul and passion. Its the same thing happening with Cricket. Bollywood from the 90s were trying to act like foreign movies, always showing this rich person in Europe type of stories, never really in touch with reality of India itself when pushing culture. Now ofcourse the Bollywood has vast audience and many don't care about content or soul, like daily wage workers or less educated ppl who just want to see a masala film, the other type are ofcourse the ones that wants better film because they watch movies from all over and demands better content. Ultimately its a give and take with movies affecting audience and vice versa and Bollywood is not doing great job in bring audience out of these masala film circle. Only when audience demand better movies can things get better and corporate start focusing on making better movies along with these stars starts caring too instead of just simply immitating Hollywood with all these award and fashion shows.

I believe that reaction channels can contribute to some extend in addressing this issue. Nowadays, there are many international and regional channels that react to and review movies, often focusing on films featuring superstars or those that perform well at the box office. As a result, films with substance, quality content, and strong acting often go unnoticed.
Many international channels only know well-known stars, as they've repeatedly watched and reacted to their movies and trailers. However, there are numerous talented actors in Indian cinema who may not carry labels like "superstar","megastar", etc, but are delivering impressive performances and contributing significantly to the industry.
I suggest that channels reacting to Indian content should seek viewer suggestions and conduct more research. Indian cinema encompasses much more than just Bollywood; it represents a diverse array of languages, actors, and films. By exploring in a wider aspect, they can highlight variety of talent and storytelling across the industry.

Again , just wanna clarify that tamil and telugu and regional industries but they aren't small.. the average annual film production cost these two industries spend is at par and sometimes even higher than bollywood.

The way dhruv Rathee said Akshay don't know acting is defines he don't know who is Akshay Kumar. Some flops don't decides his acting skills.

I think that even Akshay would agree he's not a great actor. He is very limited. He's a great entertainer though. Notice his best performances are those in which he's playing himself. His most memorable character 'Raju' is just a poorer Akshay with a different name.

The same guy that shat on Animal for 'spreading' misogyny but tells people how much he loves to watch shows like breaking bad. The guy only looks at the surface level for most things anyway and pushes it as if it is reality.

Why Bollywood is dying: because it is not showing the pure scene of India, Like old movie movies were made about unity like Hindu-muslim unity etc etc, these days only propoganda movies work

Just for information for OSR: Dhruv Rathee is a RUclipsr who often criticizes the wrong doings of the government (mostly the central govt). And as you already know by now India has many blind supporters of the central government (much like Trump supporters) and that is why Dhruv is a hated individual among the far right in India. Just sharing cause you might also receive some hate now. Stay safe!

The problem with dhruv is he just states half of the things ... great film like maidaan , kill , jigra , fighter , merry christmas , all india rank , madgaon express , chandu champion were not profitable ... it is easy to criticize someone but very tough to appreciate ... hightest grossing indian movies is dangal but he did not said any single word about that... and in india just use bollywood over or something like that you will get views ... so a great ninja technique to get views with sponser by dhruv

Some of the points presented by Dhruv incline with the general perception he has in line with other areas of his content, some points even being self contradictory. But the overall theme of his video was to make people realise that General Formula Films should not be the only focussed genre promoted in the industry.
