One of the finest performances out there. You really get a sense for Judas' dilemma and pain here. I love that this musical does not paint him as evil or conniving or even ambitious; rather, he's a man who wants the best for his people and wants to support Jesus but cannot ignore his doubts. Modern religion often casts Judas as a flat and diabolical creature; Webber made a story that showed a different side, and Anderson brought humanity to a man touted as inhumane. I never ceased to be amazed at his incredible portrayal.
@@terrytari1891 My God! What a gift to witness! So jealous - his moves and voice were as flowing as water. Saw this for the first time when I was 7 years old - it was the most profound thing I had seen to date. Finally got to see him live in 1997 when I was 17. So glad I got to see him live.
Judas the wicked one,the traitor in his despair. The voice and the singing match very well to his future behaviour Restlessnes, the key tone, very well por- trayed.
Loved this movie my whole life. My husband took me to see the play. It was great. Saw Ted Neely he still did a great job playing Jesus. Eddies wife cheryl r.i.p Carl Anderson , Your were great!
Carl Andersen the best Judas. Love the lyrics in this song. Even though Jesus knows what’s coming. Judas foresee the problems to come and trying to warn Jesus. I like how they portrayed Judas. Just an ordinary human being. At 14 yr my friends and I saw this at theater at least 4 to 5 times. Played the album continually. Now in 12/2018 . I’m still watch movie and listening to soundtrack music.
I remember seeing this film when it came out. I went back to see it three more times. Back then, I choked seeing and hearing this unique performance. No singer has come near to this amazingly unique delivery. As a retired old man it is still my favorite song of this exceptional film.❤😢❤😢❤😢❤😢
Love how the musical starts off with Judas wrapped up in his thoughts, from his perspective, he's terrified, Judas had more awareness than the other apostles
I think Carl just stole the musical away from everyone!! fantastic, Voice great emotion! Wish she could live just a little bit longer to be at the JCS reunion!
I did see the movie when I was just a teen but he'll I did not remember in time what wonderful voice this lad has It's magic in itself and so very well gives vent to Judas and his despair and loneliness ❤❤❤❤❤❤
When i was a teenager this one movie I watch every Holy Week in Manila. A timeless musical . Anderson, Elliman and Neeley performed a flawless musical that stood the test of time.
45 years all gone already..in the blink. I saw this when it came out in 1973. I am exactly one month older than Car Anderson. that this man died before me is tragic. tears flow from my eyes freely as I listen to this man. what a performance. I loved the movie from then to now. and the thing is the story is nonsense..not true at all. but I always knew that but it does not take away from the art, truly brilliant
What a terrific performance! I keep listening to it non-stop for hours. Time after time after time. If I could only hear it live. So long, Mr. Anderson. R.I.P.
You almost instantly and totally forget the mountainous set/spectacular scenery behind Carl Anderson as soon as he starts to sing. And he uses this setting to his brilliant musical advantage. RIP Carl......And Thanks for sharing your amazing talents with the world and leaving us treasures like this performance to cherish forever:)
I growth in a Christian home when I bought the album many conservative people not agree with the music and the film. They scared to see a Jesus singing but know all changed and I ever think that this is a great rock opera forever. The musicians, the singers, the film the best of the seventies until these days.
what a performance. passion, heart great. thank you for uploading this video. and thank you to Andrew Loyd Weber and Tim rice for writing this great rock opera

I remember as a 13-year-old going to the movie theater to watch the show. My sister and I saw it 18 times. And then later when the VCR tapes came out we would watch it every Easter. I even got my daughter hooked on it. I loved your performance. Even took my daughter to the show when you were all traveling around and performing Jesus Christ Superstar. How awesome and it just touched my heart watching you all on stage. RIP Carl
You can see the true pain in the dilemma in Judas’s face and words “it’s sad to see our chances weakening every hour” it’s not everyday a man would sing like this But put purpose, rage, and urgency into a man and he will have the hilt spirit Or ascension kundalini energy
everyone thinks it's Carl Anderson who sings this magnificent song (although he sings it very well too), but it's Murray Head, this magnificent English singer. Gillan everyone knows that it is the vocals of Jesus. But Ted Neely proved that he sings very close to those vocals. This is the best Opera Rock of all time. Everything else is a copy.
Judas message got lost in translation. It is a powerful truthful message. 1. You began to matter more than the things you say (about love) 2. every word you say today gets twisted round some other way. 3. All your followers are blind to much too much heaven on their minds.
samuel barry Well, it's suggestive and could promote racism on the one hand but it's a beautiful thing to use the diverse shapes, colours and aesthetics different humans possess for artistic expression on the other hand. Sadly it's hard to experience the individual aesthetics of a human independently from their political implications. Personally, I find the symbolic meaning of Judas' individualistic and aggressive aesthetics in this movie a wonderful choice, and I feel him throughout the movie much more as a personified concept than an actual person. I have no trouble accepting the actual role as a regular jew of his time, even though what I see is an Earth Wind and Fire dropout. Then again it is somewhat undignified to use people like stylistic elements, especially if it has a superficial cultural or political component.
Interesting comment. I never thought about that. I look at men as men before men of color, paraphrasing MLK. Whatever the reasoning Carl gave one of the most riveting performances that receives the acclaim of everyone who sees him. On the merit of his talent, he deserved the part.

R.I.P., Mr. Anderson. You set the bench-mark for playing 'Judas' entirely too high. Spectacular performance. R.I.P.
He went to my church. Sometimes he would sing some solos!

Amazing gives me goosebumps
Carl Anderson was so GOOD! What phrasing he had. Unbelievable
And now it’s all gone SOUR!!!
Está obra me enloquece exelentes intérpretes tanto Judas como jesus

This should not only be a Tony and Grammy Winning Performance. This was an academy award winning Performance as well.
I have always found Carl's phrasing to be at the heart of this performance.
R.I.P. Carl Anderson. His interpretation of Judas was the best. Thank you.

Memorized this whole album, 50 years now and this is my favorite singer. Such passion!!!!

I will never get sick of watching and listening to him. RIP.. your music and legacy lives on strong! ❤❤❤ ✌
It was a shocker when it first came out! The man who wrote, direct & produced it was named Jewison!
I’ll never forget this movie, this song and this Judas Iscariot. “Heaven in their minds”it’s a epic and unforgettable song...

In the musical. Not in reality

I like how it starts with him in quiet solitude high in the clear air: "My mind is clearer now..."

without judas there wouldn't be a jesus. It's a shame that judas can only be seen as a sinner.
and he was no more a sinner than any of us.

He sounds a lot like Murray Head at times here. I'm really picky about this song, but this version is pretty solid.

Wasn't it a little bit off plum to cast a black man as Judas? (traitor) I am not sure about the intentions behind the casting. I could be wrong.
