LOL to the cameraman shushing the crowd that was prematurely clapping so he could be able to hear the "battle cry" at the end which sadly didn't have any special riff to it.
He's also 10X more annoying than the people applauding by yelling out "listen" and "shhhh" like come on, you're at the 15th anniversary. People are gonna cheer.

The 2nd Bring Me Down riff is heaven
That is the best Act I ending in all of musical theatre. I saw it in San Francisco with Eden Espinosa as Elphaba. I was so moved that I literally could not speak during intermission, and I'm in show business.

I was there for her first performance on Broadway. I cried during her first entrance, DG, and when she rose out of the NGD elevator for the first time.

Can someone explain to me why the audience applauded when she stood up from putting on the cape? I assume it’s because that’s the moment she became wicked witch?
Yes, that’s it exactly. The original orchestrations didn’t include the tympani roll at that moment, and audiences were actually known to chuckle then for the first years of the show’s run: it functioned almost as a visual “pun” then. I think they first added the tympani roll as an experiment in LA to see how it impacted audience reactions, and my understanding is that they added it to the other productions after discovering it helped keep the audience energy more “serious” just before the flight section. The moment doesn’t always get applause, but it often does on anniversary performances, first / last shows for a performer, etc.
(Sorry for the long comment. I’m mildly obsessed with that specific moment in the show. 🙃)
Alright, I went down a rabbit of comparing dates recently, and it’s obvious that the tympani rolls first appeared in London, not LA. There were other changes for LA, but that tympani roll predates the LA opening.
