  • The good old Barbour waxed jacket has been around in many forms since the late 1800's. But in an era of Gore Tex and the many other technical fabrics that make life ever more comfortable for wearers in almost any weather conditions, you may ask if the traditional British waxed jacket manufacturer still has a place in your wardrobe?
    In this video we discuss our experiences of owning and living with a new Barbour Kyle jacket in the midst of a British winter (wet & cold) and how the venerable 100% cotton waxed garment really surprised us with it's rugged capability, as well as it's stylish appeal in any town & country situation.

    A couple of tips for chaps with the old style Barbour jackets. 1. do not put them in the washing machine, the wax will migrate to the underside of the cotton outer, 2. store them somewhere with plenty of air circulation, not under other coats on a coatrack on an outside wall... unless mushrooms are a hobby of yours ;)

    Great video. Bought one in 1998 Ireland. Never heard of them. Walked into a store. Showed me two jackets. A barbour plus cheaper brand. Picked the Beaufort. It was amazing jacket and useful for travel with film. Back took 35 rolls of films easy lol saved carry on space.
    I used to wax it. Took it off before getting into car.

    Just watched your video and was mildly amused by your take on Barbour. I live in Michigan, USA and bought my first Barbour Beaufort Jacket on sale in August of 2018. Of course I couldn't wear it when I bought it but as soon as the weather turned cooler, it became a staple of my wardrobe. I have worn it in Michigan winters by wearing layers underneath and found it to cut the wind and not collect the snowfall. It is a great jacket in country or city and stands out here in the USA because of its unique style.

      Glad that you enjoyed the video - I have been utterly converted to Barbour and it was definitely my most worn jacket of 2019/20. My only regret is that it took me 50-years to own one! I take your point about the winter, I am sure the jacket would have been very much up to the challenge for the British winter with some layering. I don't really like the cold that much, so I usually defer to more modern fabrics in deep cold (not that it seems to get that cold in the UK these days). I was going to come to Michigan later this year (Ann Arbour) for a professional conference, but sadly I think that has been dealt a killer blow by the C-virus. Hopefully I'll get there some time in the future. All the best and stay chap! Ash

    I just ran into this video and yeah I'm a Barbour fan and much younger than you, although your way of describing Barbour jacket made my day! I bought a 70's solway zipper jacket with one crown last year. The touch of texture and hue of color are, not to mention, really good. The minuses are no hands warmer pockets and its own order due to aging, but still wearable in countries and towns for sure. Hope you cherish the jacket and memory with it. Greeting from Japan.

    Hello again, I’ve been looking at Barbour jackets for the last 3 years. I really like them but the price tag was anywhere from $ 250-300 US dollars. Last year I found one on sale for $ 90 dollars. I pounced on that jacket immediately. Within minutes another chap grabbed one. The store only had 2 large and 2 XL. We both walked to the cashier with smiles on our faces. I’m looking forward wearing that jacket for years to come. Loved the boot video, those are nice boots you got my brother.

      @@Sergun129 Hi! I use a zip in liner that Barbour call "Warm Pile liner". Now this alone isn't enough when temp drops below - 10 degree C. But this liner combined with layers of cloathing is the way to success. Right now temp in Sweden is - 15 degree C. I own two Barbour jackets. my first was a Sapper which I bought ten years ago. This is more of a general purpose Spring and Autumn practical jacket to wear in town. My Beaufort jacket is a pure outdoors jacket I use in Autumn, Winter and Spring. With a traditional submariner's sweater worn underneath I am comfortable in minus 25 degrees here in British Columbia. I wear it hunting and fishing and it is as close to perfect as I have found for these pursuits. I am waiting for a Bedale jacket to use when I am shoveling snow.

    I liked the style of this jacket and over the years I have owned several items of Barbour clothing which served me well. They used to have a factory outlet shop in South Shields and there were some real bargains. I loved my Barbour wax jacket and when it was new it looked very smart, I found the waxy smell became unpopular in the car and used to get wax deposits on cloth car seats and under my finger nails. The wax wore off where there were creases and on seams however I used to send it back to barbour each year for re waxing.They were very efficient.The cuffs wor and I paid Barbour to fix leather trims on the cuffs and this added to the look of the jacket in a positive way. They did excellent repairs too and the patches were added benefits once again showing it was a working jacket rather than just for posing. Sadly it was stolen one day never to be seen again. I now own an Aigle jacket which is padded and warm and hard wearing without the wax downsides. But I still have Barbour shirts, shoes and scarveds some of which over 20 years old and going stron.

    Nice review. I’ve been into waxed canvas and oil cloth for years. As an outdoorsman in the mountains of the US there really isn’t any modern equivalent where durability is concerned. I have not gotten my hands on a Barbour jacket yet, but I will.
    In the US we have a company called Filson (originally started in 1850 to provision gold miners and loggers in the Pacific Northwest) that makes very nice tin cloth and oil cloth jackets. Along with their Mackinaw wool. Most of Filson line is more geared towards heavy duty use and not toward fashion, they do have a few items which are more fashion forward. My favorite being their Trech coat. They actually import their cotton wax cloth from Halley Stevenson in Dundee Scotland and sew them here in the us. It is a very nice jacket for three seasons here no matter how cold as they sell a 24oz Mackinaw wool zip in liner that I’ve worn in temps well below 0°f.
    I appreciate the time you put into your videos.
    Cheers.

I am not a hat or umbrella guy, and I didn't care for any of their hood options either. I constantly use my hood so I had to pass. I ended up with a Fjallraven, also waxed, and about half the price. They just fit my frame better and the hoods are much better. Some of the details I still prefer on the Barbour, but the Fjallraven is a big upgrade over my previous jackets. Whilst I think there is definitely a place for modern performance fabrics (skiing, mountaineering, etc.) I think the waxed cotton jacket is both practical and stylish - and that's the ticket for me!

    My experience of waxed clothes is that they seldom need a total waxing yearly. However do rewax where there is chaffing: inside of cuffs, where the arms chaff on seams on the body of the jacket or if waxed trousers all the way down where the feet meet and chaf.

    Oh Ash, meant to say, the four jackets that I mentioned below from Barbour, the Bedale etc, have "made in England" on the back neck lable but their products that are made elsewhere have the place of manufacture hidden away inside a pocket etc and it's become controversial, even down to the customer services lying to people about where their products are made! I have several jackets and knitwear from Barbour including my 26 year old Border a newish Bedale and a Beaufort (that I got in a sale) and a few jumpers and scarves that were made in Scotland and I love the products but it did really upset me when I discovered what had happened with the company. Btw, the reason I looked in to all this was after I bought a Barbour International wax jacket I bought last year that started falling to bits in 6 weeks...it was made in Hungary!

    I really get a lot of use out of my Barbour jacket. With a nice scarf it is a good look. Re-waxing is a pain but I've had it for about six years and only waxed it twice. What I would say though, they are not really raincoats! A good downpour and they are not so great at keeping you dry, even after waxing. But that's why we have hats and umbrellas!

    I have a Barbour International motorcycle jacket and pants. Incredibly waterproof when riding a motorcycle through storms. This equipment has helped me survive some torrential downpours. The motorcycle is gone, but the jacket with a fleece liner works wonders during wet Pacific Northwest winters in America. But get this - I was gifted the jacket and pants from my father some 25 years ago when he retired from riding. Yes, the jacket has some patina, but is performing well despite being over 50 years old!!! Now that is quality!

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 года назад

      Hi - Barbour recommend rewaxing annually, although I personally will not be rewaxing mine as I don't tend to use it as my main wet weather garment, I wear mine more as a utility coat for milder bad weather and medium cold temperatures. Personally I reach for GoreTex when it turns a bit Arctic, but I should be led by the garment itself - if its letting in water, its time rewax. Worth considering the patina on your older jacket, that may be affected by the process. Also worth thinking about the factory rewaxing service if you are prepared to invest a few quid - they will make it look and perform like new I would imagine. Worth thinking about.

      Barbour sell tins of wax repair. I did it once on my first Beaufort jacket. A bit messy. Put the tin of wax compound in a pan of warm water. Lay out your jacket and rub the compound into the fabric of your jacket with a cloth. Do this in your garage or kitchen. Will take a while to do. Best send it to their factory.

Walked the woods a few times in the dry. no breathable membrane jersey and arms soaked had to turn jacket inside out to dry. I know people who have had their jackets 20yr, so thought I was buying into that? I have not. Cheap import hiding behind their reputation. So cannot wear in the wet and cannot wear in the dry. • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 года назад +1

      You make a good point, but to be honest, the technology of the waterproofing on waxed garments has long been superseded in respect to performance. Taken alongside such materials as GoreTex and other performance fabrics, waxed cotton is only ever going to be an average performer. I choose waxed cotton these days for the looks and the comfort. To take on the elements I wear far more technical garments. I love those old international models - they look extremely sharp!

      I have fabric seating in my vehicle and have found no evidence of any form of wax transfer to the seats.
