This is my unbiased review of the Skim A Round ( Skimaround ) Skim-A-Round filtration skimmer basket for a swimming pool. Online you will find people rave about this being the best skimmer basket they ever used. Do not be fooled. I agree that this is a great product... in theory... but in reality it will leave you wanting. We have used it for 2 seasons and have decided that it is not worth your money. Stick to standard skimmer baskets and you will be glad you did.
We have been fortunate that all of our "parts" have not broken yet but due to the nature of how difficult it is to use it is a miracle that we have not destroyed it yet.

Thanks for the review. Was going to possibly try one out but my pool is only a 13k gallon with 1 skimmer. Can’t risk sucking that much air into my system. Thanks again, you saved me from wasting money and potentially costing a lot more in the long run
No worries! It does work for some but if it was your only skimmer I would avoid it. Same if you have multiple people cannonballing!
AND...if you have an older pool it won't fit. Older in ground pools have above ground skimmers. They don't tell you that so when you want to return it you pay shipping back...terrible customer service and borders on false advertising! BUYER BEWARE!!
You didn't set it up right sir. I can see in your video the water level is way to low at the skimmer, so of course it's not going to work.
I'm glad people post reviews like this. I saw an ad for it, and once I saw him had a vortex effect, I had concerns. I immediately thought air problems in the line and this validates it.
Thanks for the review/video!
#1 your water level is way too low... no ones water lever should be almost below the skimmer... #2 you're a great actor... the way you make it look so tough to take it apart to empty the basket.. Bravo!! #3 why did you end this video when it started to work? i have the skim-a-Round and they work great..
#1 It does work (sort of) when the water level is just right… #2 the water level in community or apartment pools fluctuates far more than in a single family home because it gets much more use… #3 even when the water level is within the parameters where the basket gets it’s Signiture vortex going. It still collects less debris than our other skimmer basked in the same pool at the same time.
Im glad yours works great for you. I wouldn’t recommend it for apartment pools.
We had normal baskets that got stuck or the pull bars came off or I’ve even had to cut them out after storms they got so clogged. We had a back up which was the skim around and 3 years later are still using it. Works great and have never had issues like you show.
I have 2 skim-A-rounds and they work great. I also have an auto pool filler that keeps the pool at a constant level. The problem here is the technician doesn't know what he is doing -- He doesn't follow the setup instructions and then wants to bad-mouth the product.
I don't agree with this review. First, at the end of the video you can see it sucking in the stuff. Second, most pools have a water leveler that will keep the water level by adding water when it starts to go low. I'm in Arizona where it is HOT and water evaporates but I NEVER have to fill my pool because it automatically fills itself. So the skimmer is always working just fine.
That’s great . I wish we had an auto fill system on ours. I totally agree with you. If the pool filled itself to exactly level this would be a perfect system. Being ours gets used quite a lot due to being a multi family pool (and we don’t have an auto fill) it does not work. I’m glad it does work for you. Thanks for your input. We may need to look into an auto fill type system to add and try again.
And, these units are meant to be used without a weir door or flap. It replaces the need for a weir door.
So let me get this correct. Your pool water level falls to a trickle into skimmer and this then doesnt work?
I ordered it before I saw this video. If you don't have an automatic water re-filler it won't work, becuse it does have to have the right amount of water in it each time. If there's not enough water and it evaporates then air gets sucked in. Unless your home all day and can keep running out to fill your pool.
I have a new pool that auto fills and it works fantastic!
That would be the only way.
It may not work for you but it works for me……I had the same issues as you when first installed…..but I adjusted my flow valves and now it works great……I also read and understood the instructions……you don’t have to install the accelerator plate……with out it it increases your flow by just 30%……but adding the plate will increase the flow by 60% or so it says in the install sheet…..I needed more skim flow so I first did it without the added plate and it worked great…..then I added the plate and got what I wanted…….its a trial and error thing……I have only one skimmer and a separate vacuum line which my pool company requires I run the vacuum all the time……this reduced the single skimmer……adding this fixed my issue.
I can't even take it apart to clean it out! You're right, when you have it set just right, it works perfectly, but evaporation and rain happens and that's all it takes to ruin the Bertoli effect.
Used one for years. I've not had any of these problems.
What do you recommend if you don’t like this one
I just got one and tried dropping one into my skimmer, took ONE look at it and said "nope". Doesn't fit right, and as soon as the water level drops a bit (dry North GA fall and spring makes pool water evaporate fast), you're going to be sucking air. It's going straight back
This was the main reason why we didn't like the product too. There is a pretty small range where it works pretty well but if you get out side of that then it works against you.
When I first saw this thing advertised my first thought was it’s going to cause air to get sucked into the pump.
Yep. If the water level gets to low, it does start sucking air.
My skim around arrived yesterday and is working fantastic. I have an auto leveler on the pool and no problem whatsoever.
I am sure that it does work fantastic... if you have an auto leveling system. Being a community pool we do not have an auto level system and the frequent users keep the water in motion most of the day. Glad it worked for you :0
They don't honor their warranty. The website states free replacement including shipping. The top of mine broke and I contacted them for a replacement part. They sent me an invoice for $15.99 for shipping which is more than the part and shipping cost would be for the part. Its made flimsy and wont last if you grab it by the top of the basket as shown in their videos.
We appreciate the information and support.! Hope others can learn from what you have said.
Mine works great but I just found this out too! Shipping is now $17.99 and I thought I was paying for the whole thing! Nope. Just the top!
you posted exactly the same review for a different skimmer basket; time to choose one or the other.
@@jamesbullock60 The point is this company stated free replacement for failed product, yet charges an inflated shipping fee to still make a profit from their cheap flimsy plastic design. I threw mine out. It never worked that well, and it frequently triggered the alarm on my pump from too much air being drawn in. I bought a heavy duty basket with a handle that has worked much better.
i own this product and it worked great until it broke, tried for a solid month to get thru to cust svc so that i could get my unit replaced and that was last year, STILL NO WARRANTY REPLACEMENT or any further contact from them, they just refused to continue the conversation and basically said "screw ya"....
not saying don't buy it just saying that be prepared to trash your product if it breaks cause you will just have to buy another, if you dare too..... good luck
am I wrong thats its not going to increase the amount of water your pump pushes
Didn't it just started doing the vortex at the end?
It did. After it was adjusted. The problem is that there is a very small threshold for it to work properly. If the water level is too high it doesn’t vortex, if it’s too low, it sucks air and causes the pump to lose suction all together.
There are 2 skimmer baskets in the pool in the video. From the experience we had, the standard one collects far more debris than the one with the skin-a-round. And that’s really what matters most. (We didn’t just try it for a day, that’s consistent over 2 seasons)
@@SkyManagement thank you
I was about to try this! Ty for the review saved me $
We have 2 skimmers on our apartment pool. One with this product and one with a regular skimmer basket. And the regular one collets more stuff. Plus, it’s easier to empty. The skim a round has to be taken apart to empty it.
So my pool has a leveler. I'm guessing I may be buying them to try if that's the only gripe.
Also, are you perhaps Charlie Kelly's brother?
That is my main gripe... the water level. If you had a leveler on your pool and it was a personal pool... you could probably get away with this product. Even so... you have to unsnap it to dump it and resnap it together. Not a huge deal but to me the grab and dump old school way still wins out.
and no... not Charlie Kelley's Brother... this is a first for me being called that. It would be fun though!
I'm a doddering old fool who's had a skim-a-round for nearly three years and never had a problem. perhaps some other pools have an inadequate flow into the skimmer due to some kind of blockage to or from the filter system.
😄😁😃
How did you get scammed into buying one? Just use a B-9 basket and a weir door.
Man this is the best pool product as when sliced bread came to us. We bought the skim around complete set up not just the basket. And yes your water level is very low. If you get the complete setup it will work even when water goes below skimmer.
I just ordered one. We'll see I guess
Well.. what do you think?
Love it. Got the effect right away.
@@kevinplayschess8321 that's cool. I had the effect but the rings didnt work and the skimmer would come apart making more of a mess. Glad it worked for ya
Mine works fine
Great vid guys!
I don't like to give bad reviews but this product was too frustrating to give it a good one!
🤣
Mine works great
If you have a private pool or have a way to maintain precise water levels then I’m sure it works well. The issue for us as a multi family pool is that the water levels are constantly in flux and if the water is half an inch too high it doesn’t pull in the vortex and if it is too low...
Glad it worked out for you. I know some people really like it it just didn’t work for our application.
So you put more water in pool. Been using mine for 3 years It’s very useful
We hear that a lot. I think the major disconnect is for those of us that have to manage multi-family pools they do not prove very effective. In a personal home pool that gets minimal use it might work ok.
Ours works great!
Thanks for saving me the money!
No worries! We have had some flak from people claiming our video is bogus and untrue. I assure you it is not. We sent it back too and don’t regret it!
They should have designed it to empty from the bottom.
That’s actually a great idea!
I know ten people who use this skim a round and every one loves it. I love mine and your water level was way to low to begin with second what ever setting you had you valves and or pump at was not pulling the basket down. You should not be rating products if you are not going to use them correctly.
Only ad for the skim around it showed the skimmer floating in a device around the pool by itself and it adjusted up and down through the flotation device I don't know what he has but from what I see they attach the skimmer to the vacuum hose and they had that I saw and it took care of the stuff on the top by the vacuum hose did its thing on the bottom you're not supposed to stick it in your skimmer spot for your regular basket that's why it's called a skim around it floats I don't know what you are looking at but mine works fantastic it floats all around my pool so I never have to measure the level because you know it's like a damn floaty out there just like a pool noodles floating around so I don't know what you guys been looking at or what he has but yeah he's missing apart that's what it looks like the floating device that it sits into okay that's all have a nice day ❤️
What we got was the “all in one” which is suppose to go in the wall skimmer to replace the basket.
They do make other models that float around the pool. But the one in the video is not suppose to float.
What's easier? Moving a skimmer around the pool or moving the water surface around the pool to the skimmer. Properly set up return lines will slightly rotate the pool water. Service owner, 23 years I have never seen a pool that would not skim. It's novel.
Just purchased it with good intentions. Waste of time/money; Came within 2 weeks with efficient Fedex updates on arrival. The problem, soon as it arrived I could tell: 1) Very thin and cheap-looking plastic. Compared to my routine basket much smaller as you reference in the video. Also, even with the low-flow attachment did it create a very strong vortex. AND not heavy enough to sit in the skimmer on its own: floats and does not work. It rises up so I put a small stone in the basket to weigh it down. (I had done this on a former plain basket I had until I bought a new simple basket with a weight in it. Should have never invested in this. I agree emptying the basket is a pain in the butt. Very tedious, only holds 1/2 of a regular basket, and is not worthwhile. In concept not a bad idea. Just needs a lot more engineering to fix the evident problems. Makes you wonder: Did any single 'designer' ever go out into the field and test this on resident pools? Have sent back for a refund. Awaiting their credit. (BTW: you pay to have it shipped to you, and sending it back in its original box will cost at minimum about $14 USPS. My loss was about 20 bucks minus the pain of trying it out, repacking, and going to PO.
not that I like this product
and I will probably return mine you can’t really add stones to this otherwise it won’t float and keep the debris trapped when the pump is off ( you remove the weir door to use this )
it should suck down only when the pump runs
Of course it not working normally your water level is terrible. Fill your pool up and it’ll work fine.
For your personal pool this may be easy. For a community pool it is hard to maintain the precise measurements of water required to make this work properly. We cannot recommend it for this purpose.
@@SkyManagement with it being a commercial pool, your supposed to keep water halfway up the skimmers, most of our commercial pills have water fills that do not effect the public
Your pool has way too little water and you're not even using the sock which catches every bit of dirt, hair, etc. My skim-around makes a powerful suction whirlpool vortex and you can actually hear it slurping the water as it passes through.
Garbage. Customer service sucks. They don't respond
causes cavitation and loses prime
I agree. Great marketing gimmick.
We still stand by the old tried and true baskets
You’re a pool pro? I’ve had mine for 2 years and it works great. It sucks a lot more stuff in than a normal skimmer basket and if you let the water get low enough on any basket you will have the same problem with it sucking air in. Sorry but anyone that believes this review is missing out on a great product.
I'm glad that it works great for you. I feel like we gave it a decent shot. We have multiple pools. All with multiple skimmer baskets. When we put this in one of the skimmers then the skimmers with the regular baskets collect more debris... every time. Plus, it adds to the hassle when you have to break the thing open just to empty it. It may work for some people, but we can't endorse it. It just didn't work for us.
Well as a retired service owner of 23 years I would never buy one of these. Original basket and a weir door wokrs better. Just an invention looking for a problem to solve.
@@pgnandt Thank you for your service
DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY. SKIM A ROUND IS A POS.
I threw mine away.
water level too low
Junk! In the garbage,,very hard to return,,
Thank you, not buying it.
Mate, if you read the instructions you would do better.
Bro is confused how it works it seems
🤣
glad you got a laugh!
