On The Night Watch In Post-Hurricane Puerto Rico (HBO)

  • Hurricane Maria brought everyday life in Puerto Rico to a standstill -- destroying roads, cutting off water, and turning the lights out on 3.4 million people. Nearly two weeks later, there have been some signs of progress - most of the island’s gas stations are open, and its main highway is clear. But about half of Puerto Rico’s residents still don’t have running water, and almost the entire island is without power.
    On top of everything else, Puerto Rico is also struggling to keep order in the post-hurricane chaos. Cops in Puerto Rico have been working 12 hour shifts, with almost no days off. Many of them patrol the night, after the island-wide curfew kicks in and the streets go dark.

    Hurricane Maria was three months ago, but the power is still out in most of Puerto Rico - and may not be back on until May.

    • @yamadaelf9391

      defectivepixel Spanish is the Island's first and dominate spoken language. Only the younger generation of Puerto Ricans are billingual due to schools enforcing it at a young age and theres English and Spanish cable TV.

    • @juliangorrido1392

      Average puertoricans not. Most of the people that speak English are because they went to private schools. My girlfriend was an honor student though school, now has a a Bachelor Degree in Education, also Master Degree in Counseling and came to the states incapable to sustain a simple conversation in English.

    • @StephySon
      @StephySon 6 лет назад +1

      RViscara what part of "the strongest hurricane to ever hit the island" hit the damn island. There aging power grid was completely destroyed and they have no running water and the island was already suffering from a financial crisis.
      Not to mention who prepares for a month (possibly multiple months) without food, water, and power? I know my family couldn't prepare that much and I damn sure know you couldn't.
      Please think and research before you comment

    • @RViscara
      @RViscara 6 лет назад

      StephySon "What part of the strongest hurricane ever to hit the island" Well what part of "Living on a island" What part of "Living in a hurricane prone island and location historical" What part of that do you not get? I lived in Hawaii and its pretty amazing most Hawaiian people and japanese people in Hawaii are prepared for exactly what happen to Puerto Rico.. Why? because they are not lazy they are logical enough to realize they live out in a island in the pacific a area prone to hurricanes title waves and storms. They know how to be self sufficient. They also know how to pay for their electrical system and power grid and fix and update it which costs money that they pay and maintain. The Hawaiian islands had disasters equal to Puerto Rico in the past yet they did not demand that Main land us save them and cry and complain they where out of electricity for 2 weeks or no power for a months they patiently waited and helped each other. They waited till people could get to them because they knew its very hard to reach a "ISLAND" it takes time to send boats and ships. It takes time to even locate and find who and where the help is needed. They are grateful for any help they get little or small. Because they are APPRECIATIVE at the mere FACT that NO ONE HAS TO HELP THEM ITS CALLED GENEROSITY!!! Because others are not OBLIGATED OR NO ONE OWES THEM SQUAT! THAT ITS ALL OUT OF THE GOOD NATURE AND HEARTS OF PEOPLE TO HELP THEM NOT REQUIRED OF THEM! To hear the puerto Ricans complain you think that its Legally mandatory that us AMERICANS HAVE TO HELP! THAT WE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO DO IT! NO ONE IS! We could tell them lump it and for them to figure it out on their own much like all the other countries near them.. Where is canada? where is Jamaica where is all the other countries near them? doing? NOTHING.. The french barely sent a single team to dig people out of rubble and thats it they are already gone back to france. Why aren't the people of Puerto Rico complaining about the french or canadians not doing more for them? why are the people not complaining about their politicians who stole all the money from the coffers of the country instead of using it to build up infrastructure and emergency plans to help its own people? Why dont they complain about those leaders of puerto rico? The world does not owe you shit.. You can ask for help but you can demand it or expect its a given or legal right to get it. Let alone complain about how long it takes and that you want things yesterday. TO Fing bad! dont like it go and figure it out on your own!!!! This is what happens when people are spoiled the demand more and complain more about what they do not get. The people of Sri Lanke when the title wave hit their side of the world were very grateful for any of the help they got no matter how long it took to get to them. They did not expect anything they asked but they did not think it was A DEMAND THEY SHOULD GET BECAUSE THEY ARE OWED THIS! No they where appriciative and grateful for ANYTHING THEY GOT. SO STEPHY SON unless you give up everything you own and are on that island building them a new electrical grid or having a family from peurto rico living in your home you need to sit your ass down and can it! Heart bleeding idiot that is on a couch talking as if the money being spent from USA is your money and you EARNED THE BILLIONS Spent to help them. Like that money grows on trees and comes from the skies. The ships and helicopters fly on your dime sending supplies. It costs 1800 dollars a hour per helicopter to operate on the smallest of helicopters let alone the crew the supplies to go along with it. You are clueless.. So sit down and can it!

      No, the government should not be your safety net. Puerto Ricos collapse was their own fault m because of overspending. The liberal media loves to push their own agenda and say that puerto rico collapsed due to u.s. policies rather than say, it is democratic policy making in puerto rico that collapsed the economy.

    • @TupacWestsideOregon
      @TupacWestsideOregon 6 лет назад +1

      Puerto Rico is not a commonwealth it's a colony. Yes they've done bad spending and their GDP like anyone else but the United States has enough power to make that country more sovereign.
