As a Pakistani Canadian and Muslim it breaks my heart when I see what people in Somalia are going through and these lucky ones who made it here in Canada should do something to make Somalia better and bring out the positive image of Somalia.

@@Capryism what do you mean, just like in europe? so I live in Berlin which is one of the most multicultural cities in Europe, right in the heart of a very diverse area and i can tell you that its not true what you assume. A majority of the people accept our german standards and try to fit in. They suffer from minorities who often even have a german passport and make them look criminal. Berlin is a criminal city for German standards and also European, but compared to North America its still very very safe and will also stay so. Also, in a country like Canada, refugees were more openly accepted while here, they are not allowed to work which leads to illegal activity, so its a selfmade problem of the government. Europe in general has its own very strong traditions while all traditions in North America come from people going there and changing things with different cultures, no matter if it was in the 1700's or later. And thats positive, here, we try to take the things from the countries that are positive, such as the amazing food but its definitely wrong to say they want to change our whole country when most of them are peaceful people. Please don't be racist and blended by news that only want to tell one story

Amalia A .....Natives have a bad rep from living on the street and being alcoholics because that's the only ones most people see on a daily basis. Somalia have a bad reputation as well because the ones most people see are teens or early 20's hanging in big groups being aggressive and sucking teeth (which bothers everyone except Somalis ). Why don't these groups organise and change their immage shown to the public. I grew up with many good Somali friends and I am Métis... so I empathise with them. I know their great humans like everybody else. It's just that the public only sees the negatives. Know this - now your in a position to change this - once you become aware of how bad it is and how it can be changed , you become responsible for it. Inspire yourselves and be motivated to care and work on this. You have The Power now.

It is well known that Doug Ford (the Premier of Ontario) is a former drug dealer. His brother Rob smoked crack (Remember Toronto's crack smoking, alcoholic mayor?). One week after the video implicating him was given to Toronto Star, the person who released the video was murdered. There was no investigation, and they barely talked about it in the media. Bill Blair (the chief of police) and Ron Taverner (the incumbent OPP commissioner, who was in charge of the police division, where this happened) are friends with the Ford family. The province is being run by gangsters. Our provincial and city are governed by gangsters, and being policed by gangsters. Doug Ford also has strong links to white supremacist groups.
The Somali youth are being used to cover up, the real crimes being committed by the people running the government of Ontario, and the police.

It's sad to see so many people arguing about who's a real gangster, in the comments section. This is exactly what these white supremacist criminals want the Somali youth, and other black youth to do. You seem like a wise person Mr. Khaouti. Inform yourself, and educate the youth as much as possible.

It's a label the police give them so they can make a label of a group people the police want to target and keep isolated from the rest of society and it's really a law enforcement game where they use other ministries to steal our kids and isolate and keep them locked away and cut their hair off and take off moles so they cannot be identified as our kids when they are trafficked to other families. This is all happening in North America to pay for law enforcement.

I live in Toronto and the violence here is real. The violence, drugs, weapons, gangs all come from our youth here. They’re influenced to believe gangs, violence etc are cool. Our youth find ways to get there hands on weapons, drugs and form small gangs everywhere in Toronto. All of them make stupid mistakes like shooting someone and end up in jail. It might not be as rough as American ghettos but the hoods in Toronto do exist and there are people out here trying to kill each other over stupid things for many stupid reasons. Believe me on this, in every low income neighbourhood or building in the Toronto area, there is at-least one person that is interested in the “gang life”. I live in Brampton which is one of the “safer” or “wanna be gangster” areas considered by other Toronto areas and teen stabbing, theft, drug dealing, car thefts, etc occur all the time. Research it yourself if you don’t believe me.

Love the Vice documentaries, but left feeling a bit confused after this one. Like: "what was your point?" Because whether or not there's a "gang" in Dixon or not seems beside the point a bit, no? A group of people were (or maybe still are?) smuggling large numbers of guns into Toronto. That's kinda the main problem here it seems. Whether this group of organized criminals (because one assumes it would take some amount of organization to sneak number of firearms here) gets the label "gang" or not matters not that much in the grand scheme.

Im really happy for Canada not having to deal with a lot of the violence we do in the States. Glorification and emulation of lifestyles that are of struggling people in this country is really strange to see coming from somewhere else. It's also offensive to anyone that worked their ass off to get out of a dangerous area, and or lifestyle. Require all teens go through a work program starting at age 15 as part of school curriculum. Offer a fair minimum wage for the students from age 16 for the work they do while learning. Require a percentage of this go into college fund or fund that cannot be touched until 19 years old. I believe this will stomp out the need to feel like they belong to something important because they will be important to something positive. There won't be the need or urge to sell drugs! They will already earn spending money. The sense of accomplishment, looking forward to their future as college students... will take place of gang rank and street cred! Build up our youth before the street tries to raise them!

matching colours, guns, drugs, rap videos explicitly stating gang related terms and ideals - "we are not a gang" - its kinda laughable to be honest - to what lengths these people go to lie

I’m not from Canada but that’s what usually happens to Somali kids here in the US too. It’s the ones that never were good at school always got in trouble and they all eventually get together and do dumb shit together and be bums then they act like they’re in a “gang” to look tough. When in reality they have no aspirations in life and just blame everything on racism and the “struggle” instead of trying to become something in life.
And before you all start calling me a racist I’m Somali too I just believe in taking responsibility and not having a victim mentality.
