Corruption, Cocaine and Murder in Trinidad

Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit.
Her murder was one of approximately 170 that have occurred in the Caribbean nation so far this year, putting it on course for one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country saw only 93 murders in 1999. Last year, there were 407.
VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killings. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to "the big fish" - the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it. They are accused of turning a country rich in oil and gas deposits into their own personal narco-state, fostering impunity through a web of bribes and murders. Unlike the profits from the energy industry, however, this phenomenon trickles all the way down to the street level.

@@YoungBlood507 I just think the translator was likely not a Trinidadian person.
I imagine it's difficult for someone who hasn't spent significant time living in Trinidad to understand Trinidadian-English, since our population is relatively small, and there isn't the same robustness of resources for non-Trinidadian speakers to learn Trinidadian English as there might be for a standard-English speaker to learn say Spanish or German.

I went to Trinidad with my girlfriend almost two years ago now. Stayed right in Port of Spain, it wasn't THAT bad we wandered around, met some really nice people, even went downtown to the main market street where we were literally the only white people and it just felt like a busy bustling city. We even met some guys while waiting for the Ferry to Tobago who said they were part of some gang, and gave us tips where to not go and stay away from east city.
Everywhere you go in the world there will be bad spots and people you don't want to get involved with, you just need to know and follow your gut, obviously going to places like Iraq or Somalia would be dumb, but places with reputations such as this, don't let it fear you.
That's every country bro. But in all honesty, Somalia is not bad, I would say 90% of the country is peaceful.. The civil war stopped 2006, don't believe everything you hear or see on the news. Book yourself a holiday there and you will see it's absolutely beautiful and peaceful.. ✌✊💯 🇸🇴🇸🇴
Brother you are being unfair to these countries ( SOMALIA IRAQ ) do some research your own research
Strongfp I'm glad you didn't believe the bullshit, hype and fear this video may instill in others. Trinidad is mostly peaceful and just like many other places contains good and bad. And another thing; they always lump all the murders together making it seem that all are 'gang' related or drug related when many times they stems from domestic disputes, neighborhood disputes, land disputes, old grievances, minor fallings-out turned fatal, unintentional rum fuelled murders and family squabbles.

I went this year and had a wonderful time. Perfectly safe. I think there is a huge class divide in T&T. There are all the middle class and wealthy neighborhoods and upscale malls and restaurants, clubs, parties, all the beaches, nature and countryside etc. Then you have the ghettos of Lavantille, Morvant, Sea Lots and Beetham with a totally different environment. Judging the whole of T&T by those areas would be like judging the whole of the USA by its many violent inner cities and meth filled trailer parks.
T&T is the wealthiest nation in the English Speaking Caribbean because of the oil, gas, manufacturing, trade and finance sectors, it does not even have to depend on tourism like other islands (though it gets lots of visitors for Carnival) but there is deep wealth inequality and corruption. There is also unbridled immigration from other poorer Caribbean islands.

What does the Bahamas and Puerto Rico produce? I know they are huge tax havens but the money invested there does not belong to the citizens there or their Government but to wealthy foreigners. Wealth is measured by the indigenous natural resources and Gross Domestic Product of the territory.

Best review of our country so far .
I went back to Trinidad for 14 months last year, from the UK , the fact of the matter is this documentary is spot on. Sometimes patriotism blinds us to the negative aspects of our country the facts speak for themselves ie. Trinidad with 1.5 million people has a higher murder rate than Britain with 62 million people, This year there is already 189 murders and its only the 6th of June, romanticism of our country leads to a denial of reality.

This is showing one side of Trinidad and Tobago and admittedly it is awful. However, I lived and worked in Wooodbrook for donkey years. As a female, I felt safe walking to and from my office and apartment, even at night. Never had a single incident. My colleagues, friends, old school mates in Blue Range, Cascade, St. Anns, Westmoorings, Trinicity, Palmiste, Sando and Penal, all professionals, family men and women also never had violent run-ins with crime. Minor attempted burglaries and car break-ins which happens even in the US, UK and Canada may happen from time to time.
Simply put there are TWO Trinidad divided down the middle by class. They don't usually overlap. If you are not living in the depressed areas or are involved in any illegal activity or Government bobal that can lead to being snuffed out, chances are your day goes on with little incident, save the minor misfortunes that could happen anywhere in the world.
It's like judging all of Chicago by just the South Side or all of LA by Compton, which would be silly.

Vice news shows all whats wrong, thats good they should cause all of it is true, but i wish they would show more of the communities that dont deal with the bullshit of these " gangs" and drugs. Granted most of Trinidad wouldnt agree with the western mind set the marijuana is a bad drug because it is inlased in their culture like alcohol in the USA, but most Trinis would agree if they see someone doing something stupid they would either call the cops or tell that person to fuck off and get a god damn job.
We're predominantly a Christian country.
arrtistik Not all that much. The percentage is the highest yes but it never seems like it because everyone never really disrespects or prohibits people from talking about or practicing their religion.....
ME i'm from fyzabad, the place is heavily christian down there, even 20 minutes out towards siparia is heavily christian, it's going north towards the predominantly black areas and away from the indian areas do you get less christian
Thank you...
we are predominantly Christian. Muslims are a minority
the sound effects of the gunshot by biggie is hilarious
The biggest thing to note is, people in Trinidad amd Tobago, we have a very very low rate of people joining the police, to the point they will accept anyone even if illiterate
This opens up spots and it can be quite easy for gang members to join the police, which is an incredibly common pccurence
Can u guys still have a normal life in Trinidad or is the crime rate to high
@@godhg9694 yes you can but sometimes you can’t depends on the area where you live is in a war with rivals
@@sarsvfx okay because I was hearing all of these negative.
Thanks alot for answering 🙏
You are dead wrong to join the police in Trinidad you must have 5 gce or cxc o level including English they don't only want character certificate but the police service do there own investigation at the applicants village our standard is so high our plenty of our police get police work in developed countries with next to no training
I didn't know that Trinidad and Tobago was so close to South America.
pfff
A lil bit further north, like floating between Jamaica and San Juan, way off.
Chelle Antoinette at least you didnt say africa
Chantal A. you live there??
It's on the south american continental shelf and geologically part of south america. The culture and politics are caribbean.
You only find out the truth when you visit for yourself. So lol to this video. Trinidad and Tobago is a paradise. One of the richest and happiest countries in the Caribbean and world. No one suffers down there. Like any other country in the world we have crime and slums. Like I said come see for yourself and you be the judge. But hey the video makes good tv for America. #enjoybullshit #justsaying Thank goodness and Kim and Kanye wedding is more important. Dwl
boss! I appreciate your patriotism but to say "no one suffers down there" is downright deceitful, Trinidad & Tobago is everything you said but to deny the obvious issue with corruption, guns and drugs .... I guess you live in some nice community where nobody getting shot and bullet ain't coming through your window, well I live in one of those communities that this documentary is about, and to pretend we don't exist and want help is to damn us to death.
Yall missing the point. Like I said there are slums everywhere. What makes a? slums drugs, violence, poor people etc. This video was just made for effin tv and entertainment, are you blind...? VICE goes to worst countries than Trinidad. Dafaq
so vice should not make a documentary about Trinidad because it have worse places?, have you ever watched vice's documentaries they do them all over the world especially multiple USA based stories, so what makes Trinbago different?, because it will hurt our feelings as Trini's to see our problems from an outsiders standpoint, jed this is exactly what we need to see right now even the politicians to let them see that we know what the game is that they are playing, we on to them.
I just said vice have been to worst countries. Obviously, I'm familiar with them. My point again the majority of Trinidad and Tobago are happy. I mean yes it's bad but honestly not worth all the commotion.... It was 20 min of pure shit.
dane charles Sigh!.... I done yes! ...take win
I thought Jamaica was bad has a Jamaican but Trinidad is far worse. This this sad what’s really going on
jamacian crime and murder rate is 47 per 100.000
T&T is 31 per 100.000
I'm don't know what, why and how Trinidad is worse than Jamacia
has no continued SOE's or zone of special operations that Jamacia use daily
but u watch an old video and believe 🤔 that ok if that gave u comfort go ahead knock yourself out
3:49....... so.. this guy is a freemason ??
Who cares?
very strange indeed being a maçon myself and we dont use those kind of large rings smaller ones those r fake
you can see that a lot here in trinidad trust me
***** yep. He aint no mason.
disgruntledkiwi nah
The subtitles for this video are shameful. Are they even necessary? They're speaking decent enough english in my opinion.
Because you're a native English speaker
Understandable, yes but there were a lot of errors in the translations. Vice should do better than that
Some people struggle with the thick accents.
Aidan Cox some white Americans are so uncultured even a Brit speaking English needs subtitles
Aidan Cox Thank you
I still love my country... We bless.. Trinidad 🇹🇹
This is a great documentary. I bless this country, and I hope all gets better. Step by Step. How powerful
Trinidad is STILL a damn mess. Breaks my heart that my country is so.
U from there beautiful?
I'm extremely disappointed in Vice from this one sided and misrepresentation of Trinidad they are showing. This makes me question their other videos and it's authenticactions of facts. Besides these ghettos, where these person are too lazy to take advantage of the many social and educational programmes to advance themselves and free education, it's a pretty great country outside of the things that occur in other nations ie. Crime, corruption and such.
When people come to a country, they come with an agenda and they highlight that agenda. They are crime reporters and hence they showed what they were interested in showing.
Does it make it right? IF they're suppose to be crime reporters shouldn't it be a objective and not one sided display of information.
devinngeorge think of it as this, Vice want a lot of viewers and people love drugs/crime (watching government corruption unfold).
What were you looking for them to highlight? They didn't throw Trinidad in any worse of a light than reporters have done with places like Chicago, New York, or a host of other cities in the USA. Vice was looking for answers to why the drugs were flowing throw Trinidad so heavily and though they didn't find any, the seemed to stay focused on that topic
I actually think they were spot on ..... however i wish they had also tried to take a look at the psychological reasons as to why (as u said ) they dont take the opportunities offered to them in our country and choose to take the life they live.
If you ask me Spanish is a good guy. hasn't done things a ruthless drug lord would do and he helps the community.
you are an idiot if you believe that
Disagree. I believe he has done some bad things. He knows it's survival or face. He is in it thick.
ur so gullible. sheep!
Their is somehing you need to understand, take it from me, my father was a comunity leader, they are just like qnyone else, the difference is, they stand up for their comunity think of it as them being a big brother trying to protect their younger brother.
Chad Amani there*
I can't believe there must be so much war and hate and division in this world between the same species, sometimes I feel there must be some kind of force at work to keep humans from coming together in peace and cooperation!
Different species.
real shit man everybody gotta just get along
+Enabler The devil is the force!!!!
+Enabler
The innate capacity for evil and greed is what keeps people from coming together. Ain't no external force, we can't blame anyone else for the state of the world but ourselves as a species. Instincts for survival and self-preservation goad the greed and evil on, and a vicious circle is ready.
+Enabler that force is greed
Excellent journalism. Wow!!! this needs to be made into a series. I'd buy it.
- Attempts have been made on my life.
- How many times?
- ... Well, to recall, about once.
"or twice..pfttt"..
yh i think dead now tho
9 or 10 shots though :-) each shot is an attempt
Would love you guys to come back and get updates, but please visit the areas where ALL the money goes. Thank you
You need to come back down here...it's 100 times worst now
Where
@@skhosanamathiyane Trinidad
You mean is not save to visit to Trinidad as a South African ?
@@skhosanamathiyane it's not safe for anyone to visit
Not cool at all
With all the weed they smoke im surprised they're not chilled lol
its obvious that in those "doobies" there is a lot of high quality coke :)
p1ner0 You'd be surprised how few locals actually do coke. Most of the drugs just pass through. That 'doobie', I'm told, is a local phenomenon called a 'roll-on' which is just a joint 'rolled on' to the end of a cigarette. Waste not, want not.
NickSketch you're absolutely right on all counts
Spanish says he is not a gang leader...then proceeded to take the interviewer to see his gang members 😂
