The Life and Death of Abdinasir Dirie (2010) - the fifth estate

  • In the 1990s, Abdinasir Dirie's parents fled civil war in Somalia for the apparent peace and safety of Canada. Years later, G Baby, as his family called him, made his own way from the rough streets of Toronto's Jamestown Crescent neighbourhood to the oilfields of Alberta looking for riches and good fortune. There, he died and his murder remains unsolved, like so many other murders of young Somali-Canadians. The extra twist in this case: some members of his family are convinced they know who committed the crime.
    Hear from the family of Abdinasir Dirie as the fifth estate explores the searing pain of their struggle and peels back the layers of a story even more complicated than anyone originally expected.

    I'm an Eritrean-American. I haven't known too many Somalians growing up. The ones I have met, I can't help but feel some type of kinship to because they look like me. You can't ignore a person who physically resembles half of your family, whether he or she is of the same nation as you or the same faith. Any Somalian I have come across I've done my best to push them, promote them and remind them of the contribution they can provide to the world. I have been doing that myself by taking my talents to the education system. I am near completion of becoming a high school geography teacher.
    A lot of the reason I went that way is because of what I feel I can contribute to future generations about where my ancestors came from. The area I came from is just a hop, skip and jump away from where Somalians come from. I hope now you can see why when I do run into Somalians, I am quick to suggest a career in education. First, teach yourself (going to school), then be the person to each other(becoming the teacher) God bless this person's family and to all Somalians as a whole. Eritrean's got your backs Somalia!

    I find it appalling that 31 young men (no matter their color or creed) are dead and yet it still remains unsolved...even if they were into selling drugs they are still human beings and a mother's child...no parent should have to feel that their child's life doesn't matter...bc the fact is that ALL lives matter...

      Stormy Weather people won’t “snitch”.....so, they go unsolved. The mentality has to change, don’t you agree? These 31 people made a choice to run the gauntlet for money.....do you think the others that are doing the same care? They are the ones doing the killing! It’s a vacuum, and as long as people are willing to be seduced by this lifestyle choice, it will only get worse!

    Kids who grow up in a strict home with parents who can't conform to their new environments are usually the most gullible of all. Somali parents also need to open up their eyes and quit the blame game. Each one of them believes their child is an angel yet they run with bad crowds. There's a reason birds of a feather flock together.

      @zinab2blessa 6 лет назад +5

      Layla W Agree. And it's equally challenging for the parents as well. The environment pushes the children into things that are far away from the values that the parents have, so these parents worry for them.

      Yazsy1 Thank You fam, parents hardship is back home here with peace is heaven they don't understand when your kids grow up in housing it's a different mentality of survival. I was caught with a gun in '08 as a youngin and when police called my parents to court for bail hearing they were shocked, they never knew about me being robbed and stuck up with a gun by Jamaicans. I'm glad I turned out safe but my suggestion to my parents to move after that happened still didn't work, we fail to believe our kids go through their own struggle. I know Pakistani friends who were just as poor but didn't grow up in housing they turned up good too. It's hard to survive in such a violent area where you will definitely be victimized.

    People do not understand that living in metro housing/poor communities strips away a persons basic rights and allows them to be oppressed. People constantly perceive priority neighborhoods of being full of people that are lazy, uneducated and freeloaders. It's that type of thinking that makes people hostile in the first place. Imagine you were applying for a job and the employer assumed because you came from the hood that you were a thug, therefor he doesn't call you in for an interview. People are just trying to survive in this country and it's not easy caring for family when you are living on 11.25/hour.

    • @helenclark7876
      @helenclark7876 5 лет назад +3

      If you dont appreciate the way you are being treated go out there and change it. What you are describing is stereotyping people. Some have enough spirit to think outside the box, and strategys along with rights can lead to happier outcomes. You need to be unbiased in how you are trying to interpret these conditions. Acceptance is a hard thing to find, but when a young person chooses to break the law usually they will end up being punished by the law. Here in Canada if a law applys to one then it applys to all.

      How did the mother go from being a cleaner to becoming a nurse (strong accent and everything) if nobody in community housing can get opportunities? Opportunities are the there ... you have young kids that grow up hearing gangsta rap and want to live that life. You traffic some drugs and get paid far more than working a 9-5 and these youth know that. However, if the cops don't get you then your rivals will.

    This family is in denial. He was definitely involved in something illegal, whether it was drugs/robbery /whatever, he was making decent money pretty quickly. The way he was moving, the circle he was in. I've seen it happen with my own eyes, I've refused to believe it too. It does not mean he was a bad person, he was just caught in loop that's hard to get out of. They're either extremely naive or they're refusing to accept it because they think it will hurt their view of him (or something along those lines).
    He was obviously a good kid, who cared about the people he loved, and tried to show that by giving money, but that cash did not come from a legitimate job.
    It's the same here in the uk, the somali boys are running drugs and moving in gangs. The one's I know are good guys, loyal, but not to be messed with. And their parents are the same way, they think their kids are working legitimate jobs and that its their friends who get them in trouble.
    No matter what he was doing though, he did not deserve to die.

    Abdi's death did not have to happen. Stay away from idiot gang members, stay in school and stay focused on creating successful legal businesses that generate income that can give your family a solid foundation.
    Iman is absolutely pathetic!
    The sister in law is truly kind and loving. God bless her

    The only true teller in this documentary is the woman with eyeglass, who was speaking Somali. She did try to speak up and expose the root of the problem, but she was immediately silenced by a dishonest man beside her, who warned everyone in the room about the recording. We Somalis always remain silent when bad things seem to be playing out, and then we begin to shedding crocodile tears. Some parents tend to enjoy the money being given to them by their kids without worrying and wondering how they earn it. Worse, Some parents, especially these growing single mothers (who are the main reason why these kids fall into criminal activity for kicking out their fathers...knowing that they’ll get child support & other government aid) also try to help their kids to get away with their crimes by facilitating means to leave the country, something always happens but often fails. Don’t come on camera to tell the world that your children are angels when it’s too late. My piece of advice here is keep eye on your kids now and stop blaming others. bring up your kids well and teach them the ethical decision. let them know the difference between wrong & right. Lastly, cooperate with the law enforcement agencies and make sure the well-being of your family and your community as well.

      In the country we call Canada its user friendly to allow children to be who they are instead of expecting them to serve beliefs that are based in old religions. Encourage these developing young people to learn the Charter of Rights. When they have understanding about how these rights apply to every Canadian citizen they will be able to form their own values about why they want to live here. Expecting children to understand the scope of a very troubled world is taking away their happiness. Just tell them the reality about gangs and how they manipulate and use innocent people to do their dirty work! Gang members have no respect for laws or religion so keep them aware and that will hopefully make them think twice. One doesnt have to join a gang to count!

They do not have to abandoned their old way of life, but they can't live in a closed neighborhood. My Somali friend who did go out of his way to interact with others has a great job and many friends. Many of them still have relatives back in Somalia and would talk about visiting when they can, feeling safe to do so. They talked about having “normal” lives growing up. This was so shocking to me given what we know about Somalia. I guess people are just experts at adapting to their circumstances.

      Sometimes even with the best parenting and upbringing, one still can have a child that goes astray. Seems to me these kids were a product of their environment. Not bad parenting. Although the dad could have done more, there is NO significant research that says a mother can't raise a good decent person as a single parent.

      Not a fact. You can teach, admonish and guide your children but you CANNOT live or make decisions for them. Thts why u pray over your children and make them comfortable enough to seek counsel so you u can help them in judgement and decisions but they're going to make mistakes as sure as they living and sometimes their mistakes can produce lifelong consequences or tragic ones, and the VERY best parents have suffered tht fate.

    What a fantastic presenter! Objective, fair, empathetic and a thorough professional. The biggest problem is Somali parents rising Canadian children. Replace Somali with any other group and you will have similar social issues. Forcing children into cultural subjugation against the the norm of western society can lead to serious breakdown in communication. Lose communication and you lose your children.

    1- The second largest crime committed by human is murder. The first is polytheism.
    2 - Blood is sacred regardless of your religion, race, language or nationality.
    3 -What do you expect if you have children while you living in a society completely different from your belief and culture? Can you educate them on your belief and culture? As opposed to the dominant culture in society? It's very difficult, few succeed, the dominant culture often wins.
    4- What happened in this story is a clear execution. this is nothing but the tip of an iceberg.
    5 - There are those behind the scenes who run organized crime and they are influential and many politicians and security service have material interests with them.
    6 - Many who immigrate to the West from different cultures often become fuel for such acts, and those who survive them become just a cog in the wheel of the labor system, which is nothing but legalized slavery.
