  • The plug-in hybrid, mid-engine hypercar: The Porsche 918 Spyder.
    Tested by /DRIVE's Chris Harris at the Valencia circuit in the winter of 2013. The Porsche 918 Spyder has come a long way since when we first saw it at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. Competing against the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, it is the cheapest of the trio of new hypercars at a base price of $845,000.
    The engine weights 140 kg according to Porsche and it delivers 608 horsepower (453 kW) at 8,500 rpm and 528 N·m (389 lbf·ft) of maximum torque. This is supplemented by two electric motors delivering an additional 279 hp (208 kW) - One 154 hp electric motor drives the rear wheels in parallel with the engine and also serves as the main generator.

    You said they couldn`t sell 918 of them,they sold them all. No one thought it could hold a candle to the other two. It`s the fastest of the three it turns out. People mocked the Cayenne,it`s now the most selling Porsche ever and the measuring stick for how a high end SUV should be. The Cayman... "poor mans 911". Turns out to become THE mid range pricepoint king. Moral of the story: Porsche knows what they`re doing even if no one else gets it.Yet...

    Chris, you're usually on top of the technical specs but a few minor nitpicks...
    1.) Pretty much all modern cars have charcoal canisters to filter and store fuel vapors. Nothing special there.
    2.) The 918 Spyder has electrically assisted power steering (EPS), not steer-by-wire. That means there's still a direct mechanical connection to the steering rack, the electronics only provide the assistance. The Infiniti Q50 on the other hand has the steer-by-wire which means there's no link between the wheels and the steering wheel during normal operation.
    I don't want to sound like "that guy", so here's something positive...
    Excellent driving, commentary, and videography as usual. Keep it coming!

      +dustyowl99 I honestly fail to see how it's possible for the 918 to be faster than the other two considering it's a car that on top of being ridicilously fast is also well equipped, luxurious and has four drive. Fact of the matter is, though, that the Porsche has beaten the P1 in every test so far. Fair enough, it lost in a straight line, but in both of the track tests that have been done the P1 stood no chance.
      I'm not a big fan of the Porsche because, for a hypercar, it's a bit dull in terms of looks and what not, but it really is the superior car. Would I rather have the P1? No doubt. Is the P1 better than the 918? No way.
      Whether or not the 918 is faster than the LaFerrari, however, remains to be seen.

      @crimnlbt1349 10 лет назад +20

      ***** weeell... the 918 is the only convertible and has by far the most luxury (the p1 does not even have a glovebox lol) in terms of extra stuff, the only car that has proven the nordschleife time yet and didn't have a problem. mclaren hasn't given a nurburgring time because the car had problems going fast on that track (because it's bumpy and the car is too hard in the suspension for that, which makes it uncontrollable, also a problem because of its massive downforce). also the 918 is way more economical in terms of fuel consumption. therefore the p1 might be faster. one or the other ^^
      ... and the laferrari? a tuned 458 with all known kers and a almost 13 year old, tuned ferrari enzo fxx engine. expected more of ferrari, i'm sorry.

    • @frozenskipper
      @frozenskipper 10 лет назад +1

      If you really want to bring up practicality and fuel consumption i think you're looking at the wrong kind of cars mate. Speed is EVERYTHING when it comes to these cars, and as soon as the other two are dialed in, i'll bet you they're faster. Or you can call me Jeniffer.

    • @crimnlbt1349
      @crimnlbt1349 10 лет назад +6

      ***** lol? fuel consumption and regulations are the reason why they made the cars hybrid. they wanted to show that hybrids can also be fast. otherwise porsche just could've done what they are best at, make that v8 a biturbo, let it have ~850hp alone and have almost 300kg less.
      and practicality... i mean when i drive a car that has 2 seats, a roof and a radio i at least except a glovebox^^ otherwise for that money you could ask BAC to build you a longbase version where a bigger engine fits in and smoke all of the 3 cars - 918, p1 and laferrari.
      yea funny joke you stole from jeremy clarkson :P i have no doubt that the p1 can be faster, because they took away many things you still have in the porsche to reach that low weight... even mclaren can't perform magic. on the other hand, porsche is known as the automobile master of calibration. their cars were always as fast as stronger ferraris and lambos with the same weight because the calibration, weight distribution etc. were almost perfect.
      let's just say we don't know until it's done^^
      btw what do you want with 900hp if you can't use them in a city - which is the potential of hybrids. and when i see that the mclaren can go 6 miles whereas the 918 can go 18 miles, i know what i would take for the city - what does the hybrid give me if i still have to fill up the tank like a maniac?^^
      both cars have their advantages and disadvantages. but imo the porsche is the better allrounder, whereas the p1 is faster... taking out the laferrari, which is basically a longbase 458 with the ferrari enzo fxx engine and kers mounted on it.

    • @frozenskipper
      @frozenskipper 10 лет назад +3

      Personally i think you're missing the point of these cars. Fuels consumption is not an integral part of the statement these cars are supposed to make, rather they're a display of what can be achieved using relatively polar bear friendly tech. Note i used the word relatively, because the P1 still spits blue fire out it's ass, and the 918 does have to chimneys the size of coal mining tunnels in the back. I like the 918 and while it certainly would be a better daily driver, i just don't think it makes a big a statement as the P1. I also think the P1 is a bigger "fuck you" to treehuggers such as green peace... Regardless of how cleverly Porsche adjusts the 918, i don't think the 80 less HP and weight disadvantage can be made up for. This remains to be seen though, so no one knows just yet. Do you really think the LaFerrari is no more than that though? An elongated 458 with and old motor and KERS? I find it a bit hard to beleive that Ferrari would put so little effort into it.

    I hated it at first. Why would I want to buy a hypercar that was a nanny hybrid? Looking at all the pictures of it development, I feel in love with its looks, but I still didnt understand why they didnt just put a massive engine the back of it and make it a Carrera GT update.
    Then I learned about how it worked and how effective the combo was. I realized that hybrid =/= prius and could be used very effectively. Then it set a record lap time at the Nurburgring. The designers set this car up wonderfully and if it only had an engine it would be a completely different car especially with all that shed weight from no batteries. The 918 is great as it is and I finally have a car that I can call my favorite again.

    Most beautiful car made in the past 10 years. Instantly original and recognizable. Not over-designed like some hyper-cars, not lumpy like Bugatti or infantile looking like Pagani. Proper adult car, evocative of Le-Mans bolide designs. And position of two exhausts on top of the engine is a stroke of design genius. Torque vectoring is a must for any novice driver.

      Loving the 918, especially the interior, but I've yet to read a single review that doesn't say that the P1 is significantly faster than the Porsche. Im reading 700KG of downforce at 150mph in the P1! I think all weighed up, Id rather have the car made by the people that have won 20 F1 world championships but up most respect to Porsche for this, not quite the Carrera GT love affair I had

    • @neoconcolor839
      @neoconcolor839 10 лет назад +13

      The P1 is faster in terms of top speed but the 918 does slightly better from 0-60 I would take the 918 because it just seems like a better driving experience and as you said the interior is really nice.

    • @IIXRATEDIIHiTMAN

      Raptor Claw I was more referring to cornering speeds than anything else and I think if you're talking driving pleasure theirs no competition between RWD vs 4WD for the real driving purist. BMW have known that for a half a century and have won the world twice over with the philosophy. Less weight, more feel, more fun. We're lucky to have both in the world though, sir. If someone gave me either, I'd be a very happy man. A fantastic period of time to be a car enthusiast regardless!

      The 918 has the third fastest lap in the nurburgring behind the Radical SR8 and the Radical SR8L. The P1 dose 0-60 in 2.5 sec with a top speed of 217mph. While the 918 dose 0-62 in 2.8 sec with a top speed of 216mph. Both cars are very impressive.

    • @IIXRATEDIIHiTMAN
      @IIXRATEDIIHiTMAN 10 лет назад

      Nafir Alvarez 0-60 is meaning less and less, especially in a track context. Something Bugatti have failed to clock onto. It's all about good active downforce and lateral G, all the times are made up on the corners.

  • @nlanni

    Brilliant review! One of Chris Harris' best. Love his reactions. I think his initial reaction to dependence on chassis computer control is due to a completely new car, with massive power and torque. My guess is supercars' power natural progression will require more computer control, sort of like trying to fly a X-29 experimental jet without computer control - you just can't do it. Similarly, super cars will have such massive capability, that turning off computer control will almost instantly kill you. It was rewarding that he drove it again the second day - as he would time and time again with a race car - becoming familiar with it, learning its limits and how to squeeze every bit of track performance for competition. The 918 is one of Porsche's finest!

      ***** The Veyron is built for a completely different purpose than the P1, 918, and LaFerrari. The Veyron goes in a straight line to a top speed over 400 km/h and it does this very well. But in an effort to make it conformable it also means the Veyron is really heavy. If it did a Nurburgring lap time it would just be an embarrassment to Bugatti. But they are ok with it because they know the car isn't designed to set track records, its designed to set top speed records which it kicks ass in doing

    With regards to the electronic systems, it's almost as if we are at a point with super cars where computers are a good thing, no only for safety but for performance. I was skeptical of the 918 when it first came out. As a big fan of the Carrera GT with its race V10 and no compromise chassis, I was disappointed to see a V8 with a hybrid. This also came with my not really liking hybrids. But this car, along with the P1, is an engineering masterpiece. The way the hybrid works together with the engine is incredible and the fact that it can go to a track then return home while getting nearly 30mpg is incredible. I think hybrid sports/super cars are the way of the future and Mclaren and Porsche are leading the way. I'd definitely like to see this trickle down into the Cayman. Once they figure out how to make this technology cheaper I don't see why it won't. Hybrid technology is here and it's better than any one imagined.

For all the kicking and screaming that so many motoring journalists and enthusiasts alike have done over the past few years, it's becoming more evident which each passing week that 'this' is the proper direction for the industry. Hybrid systems in sporting vehicles, the continual evolution of electronically assisted driving dynamics... when the theme is actively producing cars that are both more powerful and economic than their predecessors, what is there to complain about? Watching it lean through the turns and the instability that it showed upon leaving the apex and the brake to gas transition, I am now positively assured that the P1 completely decimated its time around the ring.

      "instability that it showed"
      Must be part of the video that only McLaren fanboys can see.

      Sorry you cant see it. Have a good day.
      I see that you did not comment on the body roll, that one may be easy enough for everyone to see and you could not argue it.

      Why no offical time then? my guess is they thought our car is lighter and got more BHP. no way that PORSCHE is faster. then they heard the offical time and went OMFG how the fuck did that heavier and less BHP get a faster time around the RING? Then they shut up shop and went back to the drawing board. they will release a time. but it will be when they really do beat it. as of now the P1 hasn,t beat it. END OF

      I guess you also have not done any research before you posted your above comment. The P1 is clearly faster than any other road production car, according to all that have driven both the 918 and the P1. That truly is the end of story at this time.

      burlbark a faster car will have to brake sooner. it will have to get on the power later. oh and the PORSCHE has more torque. which will help coming out the corners on the RING. yes P1 will be faster on the straights. but i think the 918 is faster through the twisties.
