- A comparison between these two mainstays of the Ortlieb line - you can actually see the comparison, instead of just assuming like I did for so long. As a shortcut for you wanting to know up front - I think the rollers are superior in their current form, but that could be fixed by design improvements by Ortlieb.
Great review showing the differences between the bags, information which is surprisingly sparse online, even from the vendor. You sold me on the back rollers!
Skip to 00:05:38 for the most cat-filled section of this otherwise catless video. I kept watching as I spotted the cat scratcher in the back right hand side. Was not disappointed.
The video is great, but 5:38 is definitely the best part
Thank you for the review. I just bought my first classic rear roller, still in the box but not for long. Your review helped to validate why I went this direction. I commute 20 miles daily so having something rain proof vs resistant was important. Plus, am taking my first tour from SW Missouri to Texas this fall and wanted something rugged enough for the trip and future endeavors. Thanks again for sharing!!
Kenny G Glad to hear it helped - these bags should work great for you for that trip and commuting.
Thanks a ton for this video. It really gave a good demonstration of the differences between these bags. You helped me make my decision.
Thanks a lot for the video! It's been very helpful. Literally game changing in my case.
Thank you for this video. It has helped me tremendously.
Thanks for sharing. It helped me making my decision :)
Thanks for the realistic review.
Thanks, it was very helpful to see the manipulation with those bags, specially with back-packer. I thought the closing might be a bother because of the lid which is so rigid. And your comparison proves it. So now I will definetely go for the classic back roller.
Glad it was helpful - I couldn't find any videos doing comparisons (or really reviews of the bike packer) when I was looking months ago, so I hope this helps others who like to research their stuff a lot before purchasing. I've got a few other videos for bike touring items that I haven't seen many (or any) reviews of.
Really useful, thanks! Time has come to replace my 20 year old back roller classics, they've been excellent, think I'll stick with the rollers.
Thanks! Those Bike-Packers look very nice, but I can see what a P.I.the A. they would be. I have used my Classic Rollers for touring, commuting, and grocery shopping -- I have often over-stuffed them, still they cover everything from the rain.
The Ortlieb Classic Rollers are amazing and durable!!
Excellent review👍
Thanks for the video.. have a pair of rollers (well over a decade now) and they've held up well.. little scuffing after a couple of wrecks but still functional.. in the market for a second set and was considering the packers but starting to think I'll stick with the rollers. Was actually hoping the packers would be easier to access and close up but sounds like it's the exact opposite. Not to mention, if I'm paying that much for a pannier, I might as well have something that is going to stay dry... much cheaper panniers with lots of pockets available if I don't care about the waterproofing.
Awesome awesome review!
Thank u! I will get the Roller!
Greetings from germany
I prefer the back rollers as well. Simpler classic design. Also, you can easily attach them to the ortlieb rack packs. I don’t think you can with the packer panniers. The Ortlieb Packer Plus Pros come in a 35L version tho while the Back Rollers max out at 20L each I believe. But with the added 31L Ortlieb rack pack I have, that isn’t an issue. No matter what, you really can’t go wrong with any Ortlieb pannier tho.
I have the Ortlieb Back Roller Classic, in safety Orange, and I chose those for the waterproofness needed in regular commuting. They roll up just like the similar roll-close bags used when canoeing and kayaking. No rainwater has ever got in (yet).
The only grumble I have about the Roller Classic is that when carried on the shoulder with the strap, and the bag is heavyish, the strain on the strap causes the edges of the rolled up closure to unravel and this elongates the whole thing.
Therefore the Roller Classic's shoulder carrying design should have been to use the same sort of side grommets as on the Bike Packer. Apart from the better shoulder carrying usability, that would also be better brand design consistency.
Otherwise these are great bags, not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
Cheers buddy, deffo ganna go with the "roller". If it ain't broke don't fix it !
Thanks
If you just put the shoulder strap under the straps for the lid on the Bike Packer they'll restrain it from flapping around.
+slowrvr I started ending up doing that - the problem of the flap design being restraining still is a downside for me though.
Well worth the money, grwat product
What is it with people who do reviews of panniers but don't mention the capacity!? Good review, apart from missing out a key piece of info.
40 liters for both bags, although you can overstuff the classic better
@@robfox1789 I am confused... The Bike Roller Classic or the Back Packer Classic ?
@@mysteriousbigboy6744 Ah, sorry - I meant the Bike Roller can be overstuffed easier. I'd called it classic since my mind thinks of it as the classic option.
review but no mention of capacities per model?
Does the roller actually hold less than the bike packer because you lose material when rolling it up? Very helpful video. Thanks.
Haha couple bags of chips.. :p
Great vid! Back roller it will be :D
Good, Rob, because the Rollers are what I bought. :-)
@Cannabis Farmer I bought the largest model of the rear Rollers (Back-Roller Pro Plus, holds 70 liters per pair, and the external pockets - although not waterproof, provide an additional 4 liters of storage space, $275.00/pair, but you can sometimes find them on sale). They work great, are fairly lightweight, the backs have adjustable latches that secure to your rack to hold them steady in place, they have the nice reflective patch on the rear of the panniers, they have an easy on/off latch system, and I'm glad that I don't have to worry about them not being waterproof.
Does one hold more than the other?
Thanks,
-kalleb
why doesnt youtube show date video was published ... what year bags are these?
Are these the 20L bags?
I wish Ortlieb would smarten-up and make the rear facing reflectors RED instead of WHITE. Red to the rear and White to the front...like all road vehicles.
Many male drivers are colorblind to red. No one who sees light is blind to white
Definitely useful comparison, thx, extra credits for the cat's casual cameo in your vid! You might have mentioned the rather substantial 20 l vs 40 l difference between the panniers. My own application would be to mix the two types, i.e. Using one classic for camping stuff and one roller for miscellaneous stuff including items that you need to have access to easily/frequently (eg camera/food/water). Esthetically the mixed pair might look a bit odd (who cares?) but assuming you distributed the weight (rougly) evenly it should not impair cycling performance. Obviously you can't usually buy single panniers but since I have bikes on multiple locations buying the two sets starting with the large classics is in my case not a complete waste of money. My own setup also includes the 39 l ortlieb rack pack that I find very useful in conjunction with (obviously) two panniers or sometimes even just the one.
Supper!!!
Im am 6'5 will this be too small for me?
Are those bags red or orange in colour? It is hard to be sure.
They're red.
i like ortlieb
I would suggest switching the titles in the name of the video to match the location of the bags, since they are so similar - it can be confusing to know which is which :D - Or alternatively you can add a notation through youtube! Thanks for this review and I think I will go with a set of the right bag, the Back Roller Classics - May have to settle for the (city) for price friendliness, but I think the difference is just size.
Thanks for the advice - I definitely want it to be clear. I haven't had experience with the city bags - if you're getting them in a store fiddle with them to make sure you understand the differences. If you're getting them online look at the touring store - they have quite good deals and good customer service.
Actually, I used your video and other videos as a medium to see - I prefer the rolling system myself, although I love the system that the other one has, with the cord, if there is a system that has that and the roller, that would be ideal, but its a bit late for me, as I ordered a set of the Roller Plus for Front & Rear :)
Rob, I would agree with what Ron says. I see the "captions" you put but they disappear after a few seconds. Having the title with the names switched keeps is simple.
And a great review--it helped me decide which ones I wanted to get.
Glad to help - I'll try to tweak it so the captions last longer - thanks for the input.
I need drenched in the rain, fall in the river, sprayed by asshole trucker waterproof.
Please put shoes on
You scared of feet? Haha
I have been using the bike for over a month ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L I find it very reliable. I use it for road biking. I used to have a 24 speed 29” bike that gave me more speed and was more challenging. When I ordered this one, I was aware of the diminishing. However, this bike is challenging enough for me.When it arrived, it required some assembling but nothing major. From the beginning and over three weeks the disk rotors (front and back) were rubbing some against the break pad. I assumed that of let alone the accumulation of rubbing would fix the problem itself. This is important because the rubbing creates friction and it holds you back when going up hill. Easy fix. Read the instructions on how to adjust disk brakes and do it. You will figure out easily.I recommend this bike, especially to the bike enthusiast. Enjoy it.
