- Comparison of the Ortlieb Back Roller Classic pannier back to the Back Roller Plus bag. Goes over the pluses and cons of each, but in my opinion I like the Classic better, for reasons I go into in the video.
Great review. Thanks for pointing out the weaknesses. I have owned a set of early 1st gen classic back rollers since 1994 and they are still working great. I have been looking for a second pair recently and now know that I will NOT go for the plus version.

Thank you for your review ever so much :) I hate the gloss finish of the pro but hate all the adjustability issues with the plus. And despite your advice decided to go for the plus as I prefer the matt finish. I am hoping that some of these issues have been ironed out in the newer versions of this bag since your review is dated 2015 and now its 2022. Anyway they have a 5yr warranty so if any of the issues especially with regard to clipping on to the rack appear or the waterproofing starts to come off I will return for replacement with the classic.

One good thing about the new offerings. I got Back Roller Classics all around AND Rack-Pack used on Ebay for half what new cost. People love fixing what ain't broke.

I have a set of Ortlieb Back-Roller Plus out of the Cordura fabric (the older pre '98 fabric is stiffer like the newer one) for 25 years, besides the Front-Roller Plus (now renamed to Sport-Roller) + a Rack-Pack Plus size M Duffelbag to use on top of them and an Ultimate 2 Plus which I stop using now because it doesn't fit on the Jones Style Alt handle bar I switched recently from a flat bar. I use the Back-Roller literally every day all year long for commuting grocery shopping carrying lots of stuff and of course for bike touring. After this time the reflector prints wear partly off, I got on one a little puncture hole which was easy to fix with some SeamGrip and two Buckles broke but you can still get replacements from Ortlieb for the older pre '98 "Mojave" versions for a few bucks, many Bike + Outdoor Shops at least in Germany have those even in stock and a local shoemaker could fix it for me. A testament to the build quality, they last and last and last.
The difference in fastening hardware is because of update from version 1 to version 2. Now BOTH types of bag come with version 2.
However, there is now a type 3 fastening. It requires special Ortleib racks.

Awesome review! I was suspect on the material on the Plus (which I believe is the same on the Hi-Vis). I was going to buy the Hi-Vis (love the concept) but don't like the waterproofing material or any risk of it coming off!
The PLUS model (sticky on the inside) to solve this. put a teaspoon of corn starch inside, roll it shut (so it's full of air) and then shake it so that the corn starch gets on all sides. Then open it and dump any extra out. Then take a clean, dry cloth and wipe it out. Problem solved for pennies..
To get the white marks off the outside, spray a clean rag with rubbing alcohol and rub it on the marks. They will come right off. :) PEACE

Thanks for the review. Its'a pity that Ortlieb couldn't highlight these differences on their website. There is a small inaccuracy in the review as I know that the basic classic pannier now has the same click mechanism for the pair of clip on hooks that clip your panniers to the horizontal bar on your bike and the lower bracket is identical too. The weight difference is that the Plus version is 3.9oz lighter. I too think I'd prefer a more rigid opening on the cheaper version. Unless of course I can get a deal on ebay and then it's all down to price.

Do they both have the same capacity?
Their listed capacity is the same, but I'd say that the roller bags allow you to put more in than the packers, since you can have the top of the roller still be open and have stuff stay in, often even still with the strap connected. If you rig up something clever you can even make an extra long closing strap for the top (using the carrying strap for instance). I've definitely had a bag of chips sticking out of the top when carrying groceries.

Wow. It's interesting that the Plus model would actually be a step back. I'm glad you brought up the minor annoyances like the grippiness of the interior, and the fact the Plus is less rigid and won't hold open. Anyone who has ever raked leaves knows how aggravating it is to have your bag folding up on you as you are trying to insert leaves. The same would apply with the Plus, and I'd find it very annoying. The lever being less rigid and bouncing loose was all I needed to hear. I'm not buying the Plus now.
Glad to help - I'm sure they thought things were upgrades in certain ways for their customers, but for the bag functioning at its best that doesn't seem to be the case.

@@robfox1789 Hi Rob, yes, thanks for the advice. I think they introduced the Plus version because the new material is said to be better from an ecological point of view, so I wanted to spend the extra money to get those, but now I'm thinking I'll stick with the Classic!

An Ikea grocery bag with zipper cost less that $3 plus $1 for a strap is a lot cheaper. Ortlieb pannier bags comes with plastic and when it breaks, it cost about $40. It's also heavy because of pvc material. At about $200 a pair, why don't they make the hooks made of metal? Plastic easily breaks and customers buy parts as additional expense. It should not be sold in America if it doesnt pass a quality test such as a 50 lb load.
It'd be pretty hard to ensure that an Ikea bag is highly water resistant or keeps items secure, since there wouldn't be a good closure. The heaviness of the material is a tradeoff that you make between weight of the bag, its resistance to damage, and how much it can hold. If you make the bag lighter it won't be able to reliably hold as much weight and be more prone to catastrophic damage. The weight tradeoff is also probably why they don't make the hooks out of metal, because it'd all be heavier. And most racks aren't rated for 50 pounds, and I don't think I've seen one rated for more than 80 before, so a single bag rated for 50 pounds would be quite heavy and two of them would blow out a rack.
@@robfox1789 how about 40pounds then? Many tubus racks are rated to 88lbs. (40kg)
