I am both a kindergarten teacher and a survivor of a school shooting. This podcast was a tough one and I had to put it down a few times but wow, didn't know a lot of this stuff about what happened in Texas. I am truly ashamed to be an American. Love you guys so much for putting yourselves out there with an inflammatory but CRUCIAL message.
I'm a mental health worker, here is a rundown of an experience with police: A client who lives in one of the facilities I oversee was experiencing schizophrenic psychosis, they went from baseline to completely not present in one day. This was my fifth day on the job and my supervisor and I immediately went to the scene after asking several QMHPs and QMHAs to come out and do an evaluation, one did and they said he was "okay," and that they would not place a mental health hold. They then left in 20 minutes. Project respond would not come out. My supervisor and I were there and we immediately sent the facility into lockdown. The client then ran outside and began trying to end their life by running into traffic (believing that they were Jesus and would be reborn). My supervisor called 911 while I ran after him, I stopped highspeed traffic for 20 minutes. Anyone that came near him would be assaulted. He assaulted a stranger and ran at me quite a few times. People were so angry about being stuck in traffic that some of them came out of their cars and approached me, after I informed them of the situation they began assisting me. In the pouring rain, five strangers assisted me in preventing this man from getting run over by a car. He then began slamming his head against the wall of the facility and running back into traffic. There was blood. One picked the client up and carried him to safety in a ditch near our facility all while being punched in the face. SEVERAL people called 911, a minimum of 20. Five people and myself had to pin this gentleman down waiting for police to arrive to take him to a hospital. My supervisor called a second time after ONE HOUR after no responders, the person who answered said, "Oh is this near so and so street? Yeah a lot of people have called. The police will get there as soon as they can, they're backed up right now." So I sat there, still raining, holding down a client's leg sobbing that I had to put hands and use force on this man. FOR THREE FUCKING HOURS. Four random strangers, my supervisor, and I. He screamed about wanting to die the entire time. One of the strangers was screaming for help on the street when she stopped a police car and begged that they help us. The police were addressing something much more minor but decided to take some of their precious time to help us save someone's life. They subdued him with an injection while we pinned him down and then carried him to the car. He had to get three brain surgeries from the damage he received from self harm. And guess what? He's alive and well now at our facility and back to baseline. I LIVE IN PORTLAND OREGON, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY AND IT TOOK 3 HOURS FOR THEM TO RESPOND.
i used to work in domestic violence / sexual assault (im a social worker) in detroit and the amount of clients i called that laughed at me when we were safety planning and i recommended calling the police...it got to a point where i just stopped saying it and made more individualized plans with them because the clients i worked with knew that the police either weren't going to come, or if they did it wod be hours too late...
Imagine if firefighters were scared of fire Imagine if nurses were scared of blood Imagine if construction workers were scared of jigsaws Imagine if welders were scared of the arc flash Imagine if mechanics were scared of cars Imagine if truckers were scared of trucks Imagine if soldiers were scared of war Imagine if the police did their job instead of demanding to be portrayed as heroes
To be fair, a lot of soldiers are scared of war because people fucking die, and the last thing anyone wants to do is kill (unless you're a psychopath). Each soldier has their own personal motivation (patriotism, comrodery, protecting the homeland like Ukraine, etc) that overpowers that fear. Shouldn't the police have similar motivation to put themselves in the line of fire? Why did they become cops?

When you stop and think that it literally protocol to set a perimeter, wait for back up, plan your entry and execute. Cops don't just run into building, blind, like fucking Bruce Willis. Go watch any mass shooting ever, cops are literally standing outside, every time. Columbine, they literally set up a perimeter and stayed outside the school. You just delivered body armor, more guns, ammo, walkie talkies, phones, and anything else the cop had on him. They go in, in teams, and work it that way. The good guy with a gun was actually arrested by the police, there's a video of it, look for it. The 2A or "Good guy with a gun" is literally this situation, the whole argument is about the fact that the police aren't there to save you. They collect evidence, and file the paperwork when it's over. Only you can save yourself, and this is another case of a criminal in illegal possession. This person was illegally in possession of the gun that they used, according to federal and state law in that jurisdiction. The laws preventing this specific thing are already in place, and they were broken to come to this point. Also it is well documented that firearms trafficking, especially with the Cartel, is popular on the southern border of Texas. Eliminate the legal guns, and there will only be illegal guns, just like abortions, or drugs... it's no different.

I'm very glad, personally, that after domestic violence charges were levied, my ex was no longer *legally* able to get guns for the last 15 years of his life. Many crazy people are reclusive and unable to figure out how to get their hands on illegal guns.
I'm 20 years old and went to the pawn shop today to see how easy it would be to get a gun. Literally they get your info and make sure your not a felon. If not you are free to purchase any gun at all. I've actually had mental issues growing up and was put on a mental institution for drug psychosis from too much LSD (I was a young and dumb 18 year old). I was also very depressed and suicidal. I went to a mental hospital for 60 days. That did not matter. I actually even brought it up to see if it would hender my ability to purchase a firearm and it didn't in any way. I filled out the paper work and I was able to purchase a gun after an hour when the background check came back. They called and told me I could come on in and get it. I didn't buy one of course. This was just an experiment to see how easy it was to get one. And it is extremely easy as long as you're not a felon. Edit: also, my step dad wanted a rifle a few months back but he is a felon and couldn't purchase one so he got my brother to go to the pawn shop with him and he picked it out himself and pretty much told the owner of the store it was going to be his. My brother did the minimal paperwork required. My stepdad paid for it and he had himself a rifle within an hour of wanting one. HE IS A FELON. It is way to easy to get a gun

The policing sounds oddly familiar to the massacre in Nova Scotia in 2020. The public was not informed that there was a madman driving around posing as a police office, with a completely decked out replica RCMP vehicle and uniform. He continued his rampage through the night murdering 22 people in multiple different communities, including a police officer, before the police shot him. They did an investigation of the incident which is still ongoing. The police did not release anything about the shooting until the morning, and shortly after a photo of the police car was released. No emergency alert saying a madman was on the loose, they released it as a Tweet. Came out in investigation that the FIRST person who was shot, his wife had time to call 911 and told them exactly who it was, her neighbour, and explained the replica car and uniform, before she was killed. Their kids managed to get to a neighbours house to call 911, and they relayed their mothers message. NONE of this information was released until it was way too late and he had all night long and into the next morning to go on a rampage - but the police were well aware the entire time of the extreme danger to the public. Which, by the way, the second victims Fitbit later showed that she was STILL ALIVE while they stood around her and assumed she was dead and did not call paramedics. The families are frustrated because even though the investigation into the RCMP's conduct is ongoing, the actual officers themselves are NOT testifying because of the trauma that they went through. The last words some of these innocent babies heard were "it's time to die." Absolutely terrifying and it could have been prevented. I'm heartbroken. The police are useless...
Jesus... really? Damn man... I am crying all over again for the 20th time since I heard about this. Idk how Ethan and Hasan can talk about this without bawling. I seriously feel the anguish bubble up from my insides every time I think about what those kids went through and can't stop the tears.
It's gut wrenching. There's a CBS news article about it. They interviewed a survivor, a fourth grader, a little boy... Hearing the recount of his experience through his little voice is just soul crushing. I can't even begin to imagine the pain that the survivors and the families feel. This needs to change.
I fucking want to cry. Im not even American i lived in dangerous amd violent places but never ever did i ever have to worry about someone barging into my school with a gun to shoot us
This story enrages me and immensely saddens me. I read a Twitter post about a young woman who made a memorial post to her mother, a teacher, at that school. It brought me to tears immediately, her having to lose her best friend, her mom. Seeing all those young children and teachers die because cops can't do their job really shows how messed up America is. So many lives could have been spared if they acted immediately and didn't lounge around waiting. Thank you for talking about this
That is the extreme minority of Americans. The vast majority of us want our children to stop being slaughtered. That just doesn’t make for a sensational news tidbit so we don’t get the global airtime
You can't really blame them imo. With this stuff happening so much more frequently, not to mention typical gun crime on an individual level that isn't headline worthy, these people likely have a part of them that would rather have one and not need it vs needing one and not having it. At least there is a fighting chance for them from their perspective. America is too overly saturated with guns (legal or otherwise) to realistically restrict them too much, or ban them entirely. I don't own one myself, but I just had to accept being comfortable around them here at this point. Go further down south and it's nothing to find a gun in trunk of somebody's car if they're not at least concealed carrying.
@@normandy2501 I'm in Brooklyn in the Trenches. I was a taxi driver pre uber. What I would have given to have a gun to protect myself. AND now I feel like I want to own one to just go to the store. Its literally a gun battle in the streets and I'm in a good neighborhood.
To clear up any confusion about what the laws are regarding background checks, dealers must do a background check for every sale to an individual who does not have a license. You cannot legally ship a firearm to someone who does not have a license, and dealers still have to do background checks at gun shows. The gun show loophole has nothing to do with the gun show itself. It's just the private sale loophole. You don't have to run a background check for a private sale, and it is a felony to sell a firearm to someone who is legally not supposed to possess one. There is however pretty much no liability or responsibility to an individual seller to verify that. The background checks don't cover enough and often disqualifying criteria like domestic abuse convictions don't get reported to the proper agencies that would block the sale during the check.
I can't even think about this without my blood boiling. What kind of monster do you have to be to not only stand outside while children are dying inside, while you have armor, weapons, and training to help them, but also that you PREVENT THE PARENTS from saving their children?! It's so disgusting, I don't even have the words! And they will all sleep soundly at night feeling no shame. ACAB.
i remember being in elementary school and them telling us during active shooter drills to not respond to anyone outside the door even if they say they're the police because it could be the shooter tricking you it makes me fucking sick that the police said yell if you need help they don't even know what not to do in that situation
And yet, the hospitals and trauma response team knew EXACTLY what to do because there have been so many mass shootings in TX they have the process hardened out.
idahoan here 🤦🏼♀️ it’s perfectly legal in my backwards state for a convicted criminal from another state to come and buy a gun. last year we had our first mass shooting (that me & my parents know of), and the individual was a convicted felon in another state, came back to boise and shot up the mall. our lawmakers don’t even talk about the shooting anymore. i hate it here, man. and i’m a gal that likes to go to the gun range & target practice…but i’ll give it all up if it means children will stop having to go to school scared. i remember what the air felt like after Sandy Hook & going to high school the next day. we have to do our research and vote, folks!
I’m from Canada. Hearing everything happening in America these past few years is just upsetting. Canada has its problems, but holy fuck. I’m glad I don’t live somewhere where I have to worry about my nieces and nephews getting shot at in school each day.
we share a border so be afraid. guns are easier to get across the border than buy legally here in canada so i'm sure a ton of our gun crime is 100% caused by dumb american gun laws.
Oh but I bet that if any of the cops/mayors kids was in that elementary school then they would’ve gone to the end of the earth to do something. They don’t/probably go to some private/home school so they’re like meh too bad. It’s so gross and evil. Like dude you signed up for this job, you’re there to serve and protect the community so do your fing job! You take so much pride on being a cop, so be a good one that saves those children. This honestly makes me so insanely angry. If it was my child in there I would’ve protected them with my body if I had to to keep them alive and I’m sure that’s what those parents were prepared to do.
Also, to prove a point do we need to show up to these goverment buildings and start shooting at them so they can realize how scary it actually is to be shot at for them to finally realize hey this is not ok that just anyone can buy a fire arm?

Kids develop the understanding of death and “people die” at around age 8-9. I can’t begin to imagine the insane levels of anxiety in children of a generation where classrooms get made into bunkers and max security prison precautions are enforced in their schools. Teachers carry guns and there’s a constant dread and fear of an attack taught in order to “protect them”. Like.. can you imagine the psychological impacts of that being your daily learning environment?
I was thinking about this today. I remember being in like 6th or 7th grade when 9/11 happened and the teacher put the news on so we saw the second plane hit. I wonder what kind of effect exposing kids to that without talking to them about what they're seeing did to a generation. I can not begin to fathom what the trauma of being under a constant threat of dying in a hail of gunfire is doing to the generation going through this. Unchecked trauma and violence will just continue to feed into itself and exacerbate until it becomes unmanageable.
@@WhateverLibra that will be the true decline of this country if that happens.. how can we expect children to become normal people without interaction aside from your parents..
They literally just used her as a distraction. That’s how it seems to me anyway since they literally know the shooter is there. Those men should not be officers and neither should the chief giving them orders. Absolute cowards
56:45 The first thing we are taught in shooting drills is to be absolutely quiet and never answer anyone because it could be the shooter. We have to wait for a green paper to be slipped under the door to know it’s safe. So there is absolutely no reason why that police officer should’ve yelled to ask if anyone needed help. I mean maybe it’s different in Texas but knowing that this officer did that is absolutely insane.
As a non American it will never stop to shock me when US citizens talk about shooting drills in school. We've never had those. Fire drills? Of course... But never anything shooting related. When I was 6 years old (1988) and went to school, to the day I left school (1999) until today I believe we had 2 or 3 shootings like this in Germany. Which are 2 or 3 too much, don't get me wrong... And at least two of them happened because the shooter had access to guns because their fathers were kinda gun nuts and didn't secure them properly.
@@Cussy69_420 we always had intruder drills which would just be locked down in the classroom and stay quiet. Once shooting picked up at the rate they did they went from intruder drills to active shooter drills. Either way the shooter is most likely taking part in those drills. It's all for show
As a Canadian, everytime this happens in the US I am shouting these same sentiments in this episode. This cannot be allowed to be the norm. Excellent episode. Well done.
Canadian here as well. In Canada we have the luxury of our gun laws actually having made an impact, while the United States is so far gone that gun laws will do just about nothing to prevent future shootings. There are more guns in the US than people, with entire neighbourhoods throughout the country built with illegal arsenals, not to mention the black market distribution of firearms. Anyone who is willing to break the law can easily obtain a firearm in the US, likely for a cheaper price than legally. Even if all gun production stopped throughout the country, there would still be enough weapons to arm anyone who wanted one, and some. In my opinion it is naive to pretend as if background checks are going to deter a deranged lunatic from obtaining a gun. The issue is how the situation was handled after the shooting began, which is very confusing to me considering how 'shoot-first' Texas is.
Unfortunately when police investigate themselves, answers will still be covered up. Here in Nova Scotia where I live, there was a horrible mass shooting back in 2020. The public and family and friends of victims had to plead and bag for a public inquiry. They decided to do the public inquiry but are still covering everything up. Police officers and their team didn’t want them to have to testify due to “their trauma”.. We are spending MILLIONS of dollars on a public inquiry but is turning out to be a millions of dollar coverup . The RCMP here let so many people die and are hiding the fact the fucked up. If you have time , look into it . The inquiry has a team called the “mass casual commission”… it’s a huge slap in the face to the victim’s family and friend , some who were children who watched their parents get murdered.
Yea and that nova Scotia shooter also somehow withdrew 250,000$ from Brink's security before his rampage, which just so happens to be how the RCMP pay confidential informants/assets.
They can’t. Due to a long standing Supreme Court ruling, police are under no obligation to respond to you even if you are being stabbed in front of them.
@@goodlookinouthomie1757 Right everyone knows the police are massively defunded in the famous liberal bastion of Texas...Also makes you wonder about cops, better respect them or they will literally let your children die. I’d hate to see what our police etc. would do in a National emergency situation where we’re invaded by another country if they simply can’t keep a school safe. Scary thought.
As a non American, it’s honestly just sad that people think guns are so important. They really don’t know how great it is living without guns - I NEVER had to fear for my life in school; our neighbourhoods are NEVER burdened with gun crime; we NEVER have to mourn the loss of children to mass murder; we NEVER have to worry about police shooting us. It’s just so sad that people in America are desensitised to this issue, and to be honest - I think the rest of the world is more pissed off about gun control in America, than Americans 🤷🏻♀️
Yeah, I'm also not living in the US and I can't understand that. I never shot a gun, owned a gun or saw someone shoot a gun IRL And so did my friends and family. I understand that people have fun shooting them, but then why not exclusively allow at a gun range and when people are done shooting the guns are locked away? And for people who want them at home? Heavily regulated, locked away as well and massive background checks! This is basically how it's done over here in Germany if I remember correctly
@@Cussy69_420 exactly! Exactly. We have 90% of our population that wants common sense gun laws. Unfortunately, the 10% are the loudest idiots that get airtime and our elected officials are either evil or useless.
The helplessness I feel living in this broken-beyond-repair country is awful. Most people I know feel the same way, yet there’s nothing we can do to stop things from getting worse and worse right before our eyes. It feels like the country is in a civil cold war of sorts, and all I can see in its future is the extreme right-wingers turning this into a greater hell than it already is, or everything falling apart entirely. The state of things here is tragic and hopeless and all we can do is watch it crumble.
As if 19 kids and 2 teachers being gunned down in their school isn't bad enough. I'm a mental health worker, here is a rundown of an experience with police:
A client who lives in one of the facilities I oversee was experiencing schizophrenic psychosis, they went from baseline to completely not present in one day.
The police will get there as soon as they can, they're backed up right now."
So I sat there, still raining, holding down a client's leg sobbing that I had to put hands and use force on this man.

You can't really blame them imo. At least there is a fighting chance for them from their perspective. America is too overly saturated with guns (legal or otherwise) to realistically restrict them too much, or ban them entirely.

The first thing we are taught in shooting drills is to be absolutely quiet and never answer anyone because it could be the shooter.

Well done.
Canadian here also. I couldn’t agree more.

I hope those parents class-action sue the SHIT out of that police station. Their winnings will be paid by taxes, of course!

Yeah, I'm also not living in the US and I can't understand that. I never shot a gun, owned a gun or saw someone shoot a gun IRL
And so did my friends and family.
