Hey Merrill, Congrats on the Gold Ring! It's like the law of averages - put yourself in the best places, and dig the best types of signals, over the longest period of time, and it will eventually pay off, though not on any given hunt. Any given hunt can also give an unexpected treasure. That's what makes MDing fun! Have a Merry, Happy, & Healthy! Sam
Love your content Merrill but, I have to disagree with setting up and using coin programs. Some parks I detect are littered with so many signals it's impossible to dig everything. In cases like this I use a coin program to cherry pick zinc's and above and grid an area. On my next hunt I will reverse the settings and grid the same area and have pulled some amazing finds including a beautiful 14k woman's ring with 2 rows of diamonds in a X pattern, of course wifey snatched that for herself 🤣🤣🤣 Hope you and your family have a safe and happy Holiday
Coin programs have their place. A lot of us are older guys with worn out backs, knees and other health issues. We’re only able to dig a limited number of holes on any given hunt, so we use these coin programs to increase our odds of digging more good targets per time spent detecting. I think most of us coin-shooters understand that yes, we will miss the occasional worn silver dime, some less common lower conductive coins, blended signals, and some other good targets in exchange for a higher treasure to trash ratio at the end of the day. Like most other things, it’s a trade off. I do agree that you can use tone, size and depth to pick out coins as well, but sometimes it’s nice to just go out and have a chill hunt while cherry picking high conductive coins. A good coin program works great for this. To each his own.
Love the content but I’m with this guy 10 years ago I never used a coin program I dug almost every signal but not now. No matter how long I can stay out there I’m only going to dig so many holes 🤦🏼♂️ getting old.
I found a 18kt gold and diamond ring and it rang up a 10 of the Nox 600, on beach and I almost didn’t dig it because under ten ,tends to be trash. With Noxy..Glad I did!
Merrill - that was a fishing weight from many years ago - you can tell it was not used yet because the tabs at the end were not bent over the fishing line yet - I have always dug everything - as for numbers - my land detector I used in the 80' 90's was the Whites XLT for the dry sand - I learned about how numbers worked - that machine was great and still looks and works like new today - I was hunting with a PI when this girl had the wind blow her diamond earing out of her hand - I told her to stay in that spot and not move while I ran to the car for the XLT - I set the XLT to block everything and set it to learn and waved the other earing in front of it - it took about 15 min before I got a hit and it was the missing earing - I bought an 800 to replace the XLT around 3 years ago ( also picked up the Dual Field and TDI Beach Hunter that same month ) and gave the XLT to a friend that wants to start hunting - the detector I used 95% of the time was the different Whites PI detectors - I stopped detecting at the end of 95 when I moved to Texas from Miami due to no time off work anymore - I came back to South Florida in 2000 but have had trouble starting hunting again due to being on-call for work 24/7/365 - as an example both Christmas and New Years day I will have to make test calls to at least 30-40 numbers at 8am, 9am, and 11am for the different time zones before I could even think of hitting the beach that is only 10 miles away - I tried water hunting with the TDI for the first time last week but it was going crazy so I had to move to the wet sand - I have the 16.8v battery I made in it so I need to find the time to learn how to set it for the water - the depth in the wet sand is fantastic - My best wet sand machine was the Nautilus Rebel after I replaced all the chips in it when I first fried it - I had a second one I kept just to use for repairing since I did not have the schematic - I have a full electronics lab I used to use back then - one of these years when you are on the other coast at your BnB I might run over to meet you and show you a real scoop -
Great video, content. Thanks, Merrill. I'm gong to watch your metal detector ratings again. I'd like to get a new detector, light weight is preferable. Happy Holidays to you & your lovely family.
I use NWGA silver slayer coin program. Yep, it is setup for nickels, wheats and silver coin. I have found many many silver coins with that program. My goto for quick silver finds on short timed hunts.
Knowing that over 90 percent of numbers over 79 are going to be junk coins and more junk yes, I am a cherry picker with the Deus 2, I only dig 46-79 numbers I leave the coins for you. Yes, I might miss a big fat gold ring, but my back and the energy to retrieve the item don't pay off. So, I layer hunt with the deus 2 and cut half the power down and Junk disappears, and you get fresh drop within the last couple of years. I got a pile of gold rings this year. What about you? That's dirt rings I am talking about. Digging dirt. Water hunting is different. I am digging for a GOLD ring. Hopefully
Nice ring and yes, water hunting I would have dug it. When are we going to get a smaller coil for the Deus2 I have been hearing whispers but no beef. What the real story?
Lol, I just recently posted a video showing how silver dimes (worn down or not) all register the same numbers on the Legend. Interesting that the Deus is so different. Good video.
Just dropped by to say: Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to you and to your family. All the best and great detecting in 2025. I know I had a great year last year as did you. Aiming for more great finds once the snow melts and the ground thaws. From a friend and fan, Roger (Metalman9) in Winnipeg.

How many Worms get chopped in half when we dig up a coin? Ask Johnny .. I use to use coin program and Then I found out just leaving it in Jewelry Mode seems to work the best for me when Out digging. Merry Christmas to You and Your Family .. Congrats on the `14k ring.. Peace
Mr Merrill,I toke the plunge I pick up a us xp deus 2,one problem is I can't connect wireless earphones I two ws6 an the wsa11 ,but I don't have a computer to up date any of the two earphones ,so I think I will use wire earphones. do you have any suggestions? great video for great info ,thank for great videos an info. info.your
I have to disagree with you on coin programs. I made programming change on my 900 to help sort nickels from pull tabs. I found more buffs in the first summer with it than I did in the five years prior.
All was enjoy the videos. I can tell more about signals on my Deus 2, than I can on the Manticore. I use Sensitive Full Tones with high square. Do you know of anyone that might have a blue vintage Compass Cue metal detector? This was the first machine I detected with back in the 70's. I think Moses used the same machine. LOL. Would love to purchase.
Please, Do You upload a video of identifying asymmetric sounds and one accesory that show the sound graphic whit extended the axis of time, if you know? Thanks from Mexico
Being a detectorist and a electronics tinkerer all my life and repairing and taking many detectors apart 'adhd'😂 including the latest D2,nox and having seen inside the manticore I can tell you now there's nothing special or alien technology going on inside them, and having witnessed myself by some serious radio technicians on a spectrum analyser none of them are real time multi frequency either, they just switch and discriminate from one to the other frequency faster than the human ear, if they were true simultaneous the coils woul have to have the same amount of windings and shielding as frequencies lol they would be very heavy,if these detector companies didn't bring out something new or apparently new technology they would go out of business.i use the Deus 1 as it's light, fast and has excellent build quality and will find anything the latest machines find,if I want something deep id use a nexus or gpx 5000 but I don't want to be spending 30 minutes digging a hole, how many more bells whistles and programmes are these detector companies going to come up with it's getting silly now.
Merry Christmas Merrill to you and yours. All the best for 2025. Some worms do survive being cut in half. Each end grows a new head or tail. Might be Johnny's cunning plan on making himself into a clone army. 😂
apparently you are in the US and you have know idea one coin can vdi 5 different ways in Canada..I have learned sound..paystreak.. and dig almost all of it..unless I'm sure and then I'm not sure.. 😆 🤣 😂edit stay curious folks.. lol
Sorry Merrill, but this video is “not very good”. What serious modern metal detectors still have a coin program? And that thicker pieces of the same metal sound different… anyone who has been detecting for more than a month knows that. Or different grades of silver/gold… Passing on decent signals is never a good idea, because you don’t know what’s in the ground.
My brother invited Merrill out on a hunt and Merrill was like, sure. Merrill never followed up after that. I guess when you make it to the big time, you lose your humility.
Hi guys,,great video,,very informative,,,I have known this for years here in the UK and remember the old machines in the 70s and 80s ,I stopped looking for number is just listened to the sound,,,best regards ,,,like your vids very much ,,,all the best for 2025 ,,, Lesrobert
Goal 57,000 SUBSCRIBERS by 1/1/2025. Can we get there? THANK YOU!
17:08 A moment of remembrance for Johnny Worm......
lol
Ah, the things AI makes possible. I just knew it would improve my life 😜

Thank you Mikey! I agree it’s impossible and a waste of time to dig everything but if you can’t hear it you can’t judge it.
Now you're talking, right on the same subject. Layer hunt that junkie park.

Layer by layer I'm cleaning the ground and finding amazing treasures 😉

not in Canada..sorry..✌🤷..but yes you can go out and dig those perfect sounds/numbers and get w u at you want..I too am old. 😆 🤣
Great video Merrill, I enjoy that everything is a teaching moment. Love the ring

I’ve notice when the signal is solid and bounces back it’s almost never trash. Still trying to figure out this 800

It’s nice to see you’re doing well, I watch you religiously. I believe that I’m getting the xp deus 2, after consideration.
Thank you so much Sherry!
I've learned a ton from you this year, and I really appreciate it. Merry Christmas, and all the best to you and yours in 2025 !
Hi Merrill, nice find on that ring. RIP Johnny Worm. Happy Holidays.
All metal, all the time and we dig every repeatable tone! Dig it all!
At the beach my Manticore was reading zink pennies from 12 to 70.
Ultimately after 8 hours I did good with a couple silver finds
No doubt you'll get that and more. Love the content. Can't wait until the D2 HF coil drops.
Wow buddy, awesome ring! Great video and teachings Professor! Looks like Platinum.
A Sunday treat!! 😊
Thank you! 😊 Happy Sunday!
I've always rooted for Johnny worm on a hole different level. Nice ring Merrill. Yup coin mode is very misleading to amateur detectorists
