The main thing that stood out in this very interesting video was how clean and litter free the streets around the Barbican are. I know it was filmed in January and maybe when there are more tourists there may be litter but it was very pleasing to see that standards are maintained during the winter months. Well done Plymouth!
@@azazel_brimstone4408 I agree, the last time I went into the city centre, I was really disheartened by the state of it. Very sad when you remember how it used to be.
I was so dis-heartened this week to go in early to the city centre and see so much litter and filth around the main streets. Where are the early morning clean up teams are are we not now allowed to disturb the homeless sleepers in the shop doors early.
Thank you for visiting Plymouth and especially the Barbican. Your walk around brought back lots of happy memories for me and it looks like you enjoyed it too despite the rainy weather! 👍🏻
it must be 50 yrs since i was last in Plymouth & i too love ships & boats . I was born in South Shields Co Durham & grew up with boats so thankyou Neil for braving the weather !
Plymouth is a great place to go and see and stay for a holiday and nice shops restaurant and pubs and ride on the bus and boats and nice to walk around and mind the seagulls and a nice hot drink afterwards
Plymouth looks like the perfect place for an expat that needs to get out of the schengen for a while. I'll be living in Portugal, but while I wait to be given residency there, I could pop over to Plymouth as Plymouth has ferries going directly to N. Spain, making my trek back to Portugal even faster. THANX! Beautiful filming!
Lived in Plymouth all my life. Stunning place it is, great sense of community as well as loads of things to do. Still finding new things to explore over 20 years of living here!
Here's a little Janner secret, the Mayflower steps are not the genuine steps that the Pilgrim Fathers left from, the original steps are located under the toilets located in the pub about 40 feet away!
i'd love to come here, but I'm in New Zealand now. But you came for me. Thank you . I love to watch how my old familiar places have changed over the years through your walks.
Plymouth was very interesting when I stayed there in September 2021. We stayed near HOE. Had a fantastic ride in the habor and learned a lot from the Captain's narrative.
Hi! I'm new here and bumped into this video by chance. Must admit I have no regrets. It's amazing to see this city continue to keep its past intact even after 5 centuries. The thought of the Mayflower of 1620 and the way the same steps that were used 500 plus years ago by people to move to the U.S. is astonishingly incredible. There is so much history in Barbican that it's impossible not to stop every few feet to take in these wonderful sights. I sure would like to visit this beautiful place one day. Thank you so much for this delightful coverage.
I was fourteen when I last visited Plymouth with my parents on a trip to Cornwall, that’s over half century ago and having seen your video it’s made me want to visit again thank you. I like visiting navel towns, we were in Portsmouth a couple of years ago and Falmouth this late spring they have an extra dimension with the naval craft and infrastructure to see. When we were in Portsmouth we spent some of the afternoon on a pub terrace next to the Wightlink ferry terminal watching he ferries come and go.
LOVELY! And yes we live in Mutley and here is a shortish walk all downhill of course. We noticed a few shops move and of course the FUDGE SHOP chain arrive. We know one of the Chinese cafe owners in a sort of hidden away places. My first visit was with the school 1973 by train and many memory's formed. The Mural was being painted at that time and a scruffy paint splashed artist doing the finishing touches. Our daughter was born in Plymouth.
So nice to see you in my home town, if I had known you were visiting I would have popped down to say hello ! So sorry to see you had to experience typical Plymouth weather, we get a lot of it, it's a wonder we don't have webbed feet, like all the seagulls ! So much history here, and famous historical figures, such as Francis Drake, Robert Falcon Scott, even Charles Darwin stayed here before his exploration, Katherine of Aragon also stopped here prior to going to London to marry Henry 8th brother. Hope your trainers dried ok 😀
Can’t believe we’re moving to here in 9 weeks , we were bowled over by how much there is to see, we visited the Barbican in June and it was packed .I could sit for hours looking at the sea
Great place! camera doens't matter - I just use whatever I have on me at the time whether it's an iphone or a Sony FX3! Dont' worry about gear - just get out there and create!
A very lovely video brought a lot memories back as some of the pubs and restaurants I served as a delivery driver for a well known Cornwall fruit and vegetable firm captain jasper's was a place for burgers and very large French stick rolls and the barbican restaurant in the Plymouth gin well done enjoyed
Tbh, the barbican is one of my favourite places to visit, Especially when I was younger. There's just something about it that always makes me want to go back.
Fabulous walk and thank you for all the information loved it. Some lovely historic buildings and side streets. Hope you didn’t get too wet 😂. Keep on walking 🚶🏻👍❤️
Next time you are in Plymouth I highly recommend a visit to Turnchapel. It is a short ferry ride away from near the Mayflower Steps on the Barbican. It's a beautiful village. You can see it as you look across from the Barbican. I lived in Plymouth for 40 years.
That was so beautifully done! In this particular video is it filmed with DJI Pocket 2 or iPhone 11 Pro on our gimbal? I can't tell but I am gonna guess the DJI :D
Great videos Neil! Happy new year to you! Thanks for some great stuff my mrs is disabled so gives us an insight of best places to go keep up the good work!
I lived in Plymouth in the late mid 80,s, it's a great city, the mayflower steps were apparently much further back towards the hill side were the road is situated, Devon has it's own status, people who visit the area will feel they should live in Devon, air quality and standard of living obviously are the reasons, but Cornwall is better just look.
It's a great part of Plymouth , w e often park at Mount Edgcumbe and catch the ferry over and walk to the Barbican, it's a very nice place . Also there are boat trips around the naval dock yard .
One thing you missed in the barbican, that is by where you ate, is Jacka Bakery, it is the oldest commercial bakery in the UK, has been owned and ran by the "Jacka" family since it opened, their bread is honestly the best I've ever eaten, even better than french bread, it's so popular that they always sell out by midday, and you actually have to reserve a loaf if you want to make sure you'll be able to buy waht you want!
Do you colorgrade much, any tips? This particular video wasn't with gimbal or gimbal doesn't stop a little walking bobbing? Your art is magnificent. I come and view often!
You can see Plymouth Gin in the distance in one of your shots. It is the oldest gin distillery in the UK. I don't think you went past the elizabethan house. Another cool sight to see that was close to where you walked.
Try a visit to Barnstaple in North Devon. Oldest borough in England. Ancient town centre and quay side. Got a tower clock in square called four-faced liar as each side tells a different time. Medieval church in centre. Old indoor market hall.
I can tell that The Barbican is one of the best tourist attractions in Plymouth, alongside the Hoe As a Plymothian, or "Janner" xD I xan safely say that Plymouth may have it's ups and downs but more often than not, it's a beautiful city to be in for a while Also yes, weather down here is poor sometimes... But hey, at least we get weird weather... If I found you sooner, I would've popped by and given you my experience with the city
Actually the Mayflower Steps are a bit of a tourist scam. It has been discovered that the ORIGINAL steps are actually under the ladies toilets within the Admiral McBride pub which is nearby.
Thank you - you're right! (99% - it's the ladies!) Perhaps the most famous steps in history, the Mayflower Steps have supposedly been located in a surprising, yet somewhat cheeky spot - under a women's restroom in an English pub. A set of steps built in Plymouth in 1934 commemorates the location where the Pilgrims are said to have left England on the Mayflower in 1620 to settle North America. However, a local landlord says the actual location of the steps is not where tourists line up every year, but rather beneath the Admiral MacBride pub just a few feet away, SWNS reports. “Legend has it that this is the home of the Mayflower Steps," Admiral MacBride’s head chef Ollie Marshall, said in comments obtained by SWNS. ''The building was put on top of it more than 300 years ago and they are directly beneath the women’s toilets."
Plymouth did actually have a large amount of pirates, drakes island and the barbican were full of them back in the 1500s, drake was essentially a pirate but he was rich so could do what he liked.
was Nice to watch, brought back many memories, Im a Janner from Plymouth who now lives in Tulsa Oklahoma.

Barbican area great too.
It really is!
Thank you. Lovely to watch esp for people who are elderly and cannot get out

I know it was filmed in January and maybe when there are more tourists there may be litter but it was very pleasing to see that standards are maintained during the winter months. Well done Plymouth!
That's until you reach the City Centre :/
Believe me it's a mess at times, but we try to clean up as much as we can
The roads are so fucking bad. Pot hole after Pot hole after pot hole. Dont live here
@@azazel_brimstone4408 I agree, the last time I went into the city centre, I was really disheartened by the state of it. Very sad when you remember how it used to be.

Every town and city has those tho!

Am guessing the Navy would have had em if they'd tried to land in Plymouth then!
