Let’s be real……drag race NEEDS a “ dolls of herstory” themed episode where they are put into teams of 2/3 & each one has to pick a doll from a brand assigned to them & create either there own Original characters or a pre-existing doll & make it something new ( like sugar & spice did for Halloween but as a full on episode). Heck they could have TRIXIE MATTEL, a certified doll collector with a genuine #1 1959 blond swimsuit barbie…be a guest judge & put some opinions on the looks as the view point on a doll collector. Id totally love this type of episode

@@michaelburns2003yeah and the guest judge was Law Roach. I kinda wish they brought a doll designer, like Jessy Ayala of Integrity Toys. I think this episode couldve been a lot more memorable for MH fans and Face off fans is if they had changed the challenge idea to "design your own teenage monster to attend monster high, winner gets their design turned into a doll" (im imagining LE collector doll, but that would have been really cool and these contestants wouldve been able to show off their character design skills a lot better too, which the best episodes of face off always showcases well) but alas, the only reason this episode got greenlit was because Mattel had no idea how to translate the character designs into live action for their upcoming movie and wanted inspiration, so that idea would never have happened.

    • @sincitty3323

It's interesting that even though Mattel wanted to use the contest to test out live action MH designs, the winning design chosen by fans looks nothing like live action Lagoona. I wonder if they did actually consider the designs. I mean, the live action Cleo does look like movie Cleo, but I think that's just a coincidence.

To be honest, these guys thinking not knowing how to do a character more feminine isnt something that would devalue them as an artist, like you need versatility in your portifolio, is okay to be more inclined to one type of makeup but only wanting to do montrosus makeup because is "more masculine" and not being open minded like the lagoona guys was their downfall

And yes, you are right: knowing a bit about beauty makeup would absolutely go a long way.

It's insane to me that universal can copyright what color is used for a character, that's in the public domain. Frankie is Mattel's IP and they should be able to make her/them green.
Sadly not the most ridiculous copyright battle involving a universal monsters character.

    • @whatalsaid
      @whatalsaid 5 месяцев назад +68

ACTUALLY, Universal only has a copyright claim if ALL of these traits are used.
      1. Protruding forehead
      2. Neck bolts
      3. Green skin
      4. Forehead scar
      5. Flat top head
And since G1 Frankie only uses two of those five traits, she was never really in any danger of being copyright claimed. I think G3 Frankie being blue was more of a design choice, since blue compliments their whole vibe and power set more. Highly reccomend giving this article "How Universal Re-Copyrighted Frankenstein’s Monster" a read. Legal loopholes like these are how other studios got away with using a green wicked witch in their wizard of oz retellings, despite the OG witch being owned by MGM.

Lagoona is definitely the MVP, I don't think anyone can argue otherwise. I'm surprised Draculara got that high up, besides her outfit the rest of her vibes were... just okay.
I think Abby and Venus's looks are like... such huge disappointments... First of all the whole "simian nose" thing, they went very Planet of the Apes (1960s original); it's such a boring move though, they could have decided to make her like Snow Leopard themed or Saber-tooth cat themed and it would have turned out way better. Venus's team worked way too hard on that handbag and I wish they had just like. Slapped a thick, viney prosthetic right on her face instead of her neck, maybe with some fake thorns and a flower by her temple. They were too afraid to put a cool plant prosthetic but somehow brave enough to do a hideous teeth one.

Cig and George had like STELLAR RUNS on their original season (they competed in the same season), but they didn't win, so you kinda knew they would be brought back in some way. They're already besties originally, so the team format wasn't exactly a problem, and they went to the finale together on all stars, to no one's surprise. Whereas for Logan and Adam who had kinda opposite energies, that didn't happen. I was actually surprised that the girl who had the most impressive skills with wigs (Emily) didn't go for some wig sculpture for Draculaura, it was kinda disappointing, but I'll give it a pass, since the final product was serviceable.
If I'm not mistaken the costumes vary so much because the studio already has the clothes and fabrics laying around on the set, so the contestants have to match their concepts with what's available to them?? Having matching clothes with the dolls is a matter of luck mostly.

    • @katehucks774
      @katehucks774 5 месяцев назад +20

As far as I’m aware, for most of the challenges they get to request what kind of costume they want for their look, and a costume department will send them the closest thing they have that fits their model? I remember several episodes where contestants got costume pieces and props that weren’t… quite what they had asked for, and they just had to work with what the ended up with. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t get a choice of outfit for this particular challenge, since they’re SO character-specific

If he had signed the hobbit picture instead, someone would look at it and immediately be like "omg you have an autograpgh from someone from the hobbit?!" and that would be the sole focus of the conversation without having to mention a random competition show haha

One thing I missed in the later seasons of Face Off is a lot of the earlier ones HAD beauty make-up challenges and things like "disguise a family member as a different person" and later seasons seemed to just focus on monsters and fantasy, which, while nice, didn't show as big a range as the first few seasons did. I think the MH challenge could've gone a lot better overall if it had been done way earlier.

I had never heard of this show or the MH episode before today, and wow. Lagoona's makeup/prosthetics deserve the win they received. Some of the others.... I think if Mattel had given more characters with places for creative prosthetics, like Toralei, Viperine, Jinafire, etc. it would have helped the teams much more. Instead, they went with safe, fan-favorite, core characters. Could you imagine getting a Wydowna look from this episode? Or Iris? There are so many directions they could have gone! In terms of lack of Frankie, my guess would be rights issues with Universal over the Frankenstein licensing. I wish we'd seen more of the Skelita - the final look was amazing. Of all the things to enhance on Abbey, they enhanced the nose and made it look like that? When I think of Abbey from G1 I think of her cute overbite.
Frankie not being included was certainly a choice. Anybody who got her would've had a blast with the prosthetics and makeup.
That final showcase with the looks and the lighting did no favors for some of these looks, especially Venus.

  • @MsSumoon
    @MsSumoon 5 месяцев назад +9

I think Frankie wasn't included because they were afraid of Universal suing them.
The other MH dolls do avoid copyright limits, but Frankie's design is way too much based off on Universals design that any makeup artist would end up having trouble.
It's one of the reasons G3 Frankie doesn't have the bolts, and they changed their color from light mint green to light blue.
For Cleo, if the challenge was to make them more monster like than cute, I would actually would have gone to the Universal look for inspiration, the crunchy look, it's not that hard to replicate but fun, same for Clawdeen.
Venus, the team did lean on the monster aspect.
Abbey would have looked better with they gave her the iconic teeth, had it would have balanced the monkey's nose they were insisting on keeping.
    Skelita looks fine.
Draculaura is way too human, so I get the way they tried to include a prosthetic in there, but I would have gone with bat wings, or even a Bat like nose, or even more like Buffy's vampires, if the challenge was to make them more like monsters.

I especially spent every second Clawdeen's team was on screen going "please don't put her in blackface, oh god PLEASE don't put her in blackface." i was really into face off back at the start of high school- pretty sure i got my name inspiration from either it or another similar syfy series? anyway, i had NO IDEA there was a monster high episode! i wish they had used monster high in a different way like others in the comments have suggested- designing their own original monster high character or something would have been super cool. as soon as you said they were doing a face prosthetic for cleo i KNEW it was going to be... something, certainly. so glad they ended up scrapping it. honestly i think there must be some sort of requirement to make latex prosthetics for every challenge, or at least for the majority, because even though the prosthetic bandages are impressive, i can only imagine how cool it would have looked if they could have just used fabric and shaded/painted it to look perfect. plus, the random as hell bat prosthetics on draculaura's collarbones, while cool, are out of left field. i can imagine a show like this (is face off still making new episodes?) doing this today and it being absolutely amazing. and they would get to do frankie since their skin isn't green and they don't have neck bolts in g3! i've seen some seriously creative make-up looks inspired and themed around monster high in the last few years, kind of want to see a professional competition go at it again- someone else in the comments mentioned drag race and that would be absolutely amazing- if they could get mattel on board. mattel has worked with trixie before i'm pretty sure, so they aren't completely against working with drag queens publically- especially since ru paul is getting a monster high doll in g3 sometime this year, i've heard. i can dream about the collab, at least.

I've been saying it for years. Every single artist doesn't need to have every single skill, but it's annoying how many faceoff contestants make it to the semifinale or finale on horror alone - not a single old age, beauty, femenine or otherwise pretty character. The fact that so many artists (especially men) work in professional level makeup and prosthetics but can't do basic casual run of the mill makeup or contour just defies logic. Fantasy and sci fi have much broader range than horror, but a ton of artists on the show later on were able to entirely avoid ever having to do any form of beautiful or femenine makeup, often times using excuses to make prompts into monsters, demons or succubi without actually engaging with the source material or audience associated with the prompt. It isn't unique to makeup, but it's not uncommon for beginner artists to use horror or gore as a crutch. In particular, I remember being disappointed that they did a candyland episode and almost everyone did horrific, bloody makeup, no mention of the board game, it's characters or care for a potentially young child aged audience. I watched over ten seasons of the show, and while the base skill levels have skyrocketed, sometimes it feels like the creativity and broader skillset is lacking.

Has anyone actually noticed, not including the prosthetics and definitely changing the wig, Cleo’s design is actually very close to what Monster High did do for the live action action? Both are super similar.

Ahhh, I haven't thought about Face Off in years!! I loved that show. I don't think I saw this season though-- what a great recap. I think the funniest part about this is that Cleo's look here isn't too awfully far off from the actual live action lmfao. There really isn't a lot you can do with her 💀 I wish they could have made her more corpse -ish because I've seen some really cool Cleo redesigns but I understand why Mattel wouldn't want to do that.

If I had the choice to change out one of the dolls it would have been Cleo. Don't get me wrong, as a character I love her, but as a kid I always thought her dolls were a little boring. I do think you can make cool Mummy-themed effects make up and prosthetics, but Cleo doesn't really look like a classic horror Mummy, Obviously because she's a fashion doll. I think if her team did try leaning towards a more horror-creature look, they could have been more successful, the judges also might've disliked it, though.
There's 4 characters that I would go with instead of Cleo: Toralei, Operetta, Rochelle, and Nefera.
I won't go into details so, to be quick,
*Toralei literally just because she's a Werecat.
*Operetta because I would've loved to see them try to replicate her mask and scars.
*Rochelle because I think you can do a lot with Gargoyles.
*Nefera because honestly even if I loathed her personality and gagged that time Cleo said she was a "Great big sister" 😡, I just really love her design.

Honestly, if you wanted to just recap Face Off episodes for the rest of your time on RUclips, I'd watch that forever.
I remember not being very impressed by this episode, for some reason -- I think it was the lack of Frankie. She's LITERALLY the main character but Skelita is here? Not that I'm mad that Skelita is here, but I'm more or less confused as to why.

I can't believe the selection of dolls to pick from were so bland. They could've used a tonne of the G1 designs like even Robbeca Steam of Honey Swamp or even Spectra wtf would they go with the G2 versions? I think the G3 versions would've given them more to work with entirely.
They didn't even use a good Clawdeen it's such a dissrvice to everyone.

I remember watching this episode when it came out and me being cynical since birth thought it was FaceOff “selling out” to Mattel 😂 because the original judges weren’t there, no one was being eliminated and well, the whole Mattel involvement. As an adult, looking back, I’m not angry about it anymore, especially knowing all I know about fashion dolls and respecting the craft behind them (thanks to this channel).

On a side note, I always find it weird when prize packages are specific merchandising for their brand. Like, cool, that would have been an amazing prize for Keaglhan’s team but literally nobody else would care, and that makes it kinda hard to watch went they don’t do that well.

Actually it’s a reoccurring thing that male contestants seem to always say “I don’t do beauty make up”. They don’t hide it and it kinda becomes the storyline for the episode. The natural disaster fairy episode on season 7 or the intergalactic beauty pageant on season 8 are a good examples where they clearly struggled.

Ive been a Face Off fan since the beginning, still rewatch it all the time. I remember when this episode first aired i was excited for it, because even though im not a Monster High superfan by any means (i wasn't allowed to buy the dolls, and i wasn't all that interested in the show) i have always loved Monster High from a character design concept standpoint.
I think having a mix of more overtly monstrous and more human like characters didn't really unbalance the challenge, because sfx makeup artists all have different preferences and specialties, as we saw in this challenge itself. Someone getting Cleo as their base isn't better off than someone getting Skelita if they aren't experienced in doing beauty makeup. Tons of sfx artists excell at prosthetic applications, and fumble when it comes down to beauty looks.
And in the same vein, getting a character with a more human skintone isn't necessarily and advantage. Since everyone knows what human skin is supposed to look like any mistakes made are immediately more obvious. Ive seen contestants fail what would've been relatively simple looks *specifically because* they couldn't match the makeup to the color of their model's skin properly, including, again, in this same challenge with Clawdeen. (and it's pretty much exclusively when working with poc models and/or characters, which is a whole thing i could get into on it's own, but i digress)
Cleo was a trip up because it was so simple it was easy to overthink and overcomplicate, which is exactly what happened. I think giving the artists a chance to attempt a simple look was a *good* thing, but the artists working on her just missed the point of it. It was a good opportunity for a "less is more" approach, and to show off the fact that good beauty makeup skills *are* important in sfx. Had they focused on a beauty look from the get go, and done minimal prosthetics to sell the mummy look in other ways, like making her look a bit more thin and gaunt, they could've had a top notch look.

I went to a makeup school in LA where a lot of my teachers were on Face Off. Every single one of them are all bitter and jaded towards the show and say it ruined their careers because now the union (what hires artists for movies) don’t take them as serious artists for being on the show. They cast a lot out of my school, but no one I went to school with that year auditioned because all of our teachers were bitter. Even the ones that won/went far on the show!
