I have friends who work in healthcare who suffer from deep moral injury. Theyre still in debt for their education, but no longer agree with the system they must work within. I am a former mental health profesional myself, and a career pivot has been crucial to my wellbeing. We should all listen to our bodies intuitions.
I have been in this health road since 1980. I am now 62. I have been waiting years for this to happen the big wake up. I love your podcast Myiam &Johnathan. I have watched & listened to them all. I don’t do doctors never have! Eat as much Whole Foods that r available. I stopped fast food in 1980 when I was 18. Given a book in 83 called Shopper Consumer Beware. It explains what they do to the food we consume. How advertising tricks people into thinking things are healthy and they r not. I use to drink soy milk along with my kids as well. I got away from the American diet and lost 30 lbs that I have kept off for 40 yrs.

I began following Dr Weils protocol and changed my children's health. My son was asthmatic and he helped me to get him off shots. I was told that he would never play sports and he was a champion in baseball, swimming, golf and tennis! I owe him a big hug for changing our lives for the better.
I was a Pharmacist for 20 years and I never would have got through it without Dr Weil. I loved his website and books. I completely resonate with everything he teaches.
Can you recommend a training for average people to study natural health? What school did you attend if you don't mind answering? When I look at the school I go to their library and sources and learn a lot.
@@perfectpeace352 Wow! That is a great question! I found studying the basics on immunology (on RUclips is OK) and the digestive tract is a great start. Then things start to slowly make sense. I wrote in one comment that I was "stunned by the connection between diet and disease, including neurological diseases, autoimmune diseases, and bad knees. Graves' disease, for instance, is often exacerbated with dairy. MS is often exacerbated by gluten. Gluten sensitivity is often exacerbated by dysbiosis which allows gluten to enter bloodstream and trigger immune responses. Epilepsy is often exacerbated with a lack of GABA-producing probiotics. Kidney stones (oxalate sensitivity) are often exacerbated by low stomach acid. Heavy metals can accumulate without chlorophyl-rich foods (leafy greens). Trace insecticides can enter the blood stream without flaxseed fiber. Heightened sensitivity to caffeine can be blamed on dysbiosis, where caffeine can enter the bloodstream quickly. Holy moly!" Copilot helped me design all sorts of recipes, including smoothie, for treating various ailments. It does the research for you, calculates amounts of ingredients, and somehow knows how to make the smoothies taste great. I ask, "Can you make a vegan recipe for an immune boosting smoothie that... What vegan supplements can help?"
ME TOO!!! YOU are the one who put out there that you finally got a PhD in natural health. Why have you become secretive about the school you went to , etc. since there are others, including me, who would like to check into these programs (and I am 70!) Are you afraid others MIGHT follow in your shoes? If so, how sad. Please send individual messages to those of us who are interested. Thank you
I discovered Dr Weil in the early 90"s. His wisdom, knowledge, and insight are honest and real. I have lived a healthy lifestyle in a country that doesn't understand nutrition and self healing. I have nothing but praise for Dr Weil.
This was great! Thank you. Can’t believe Dr. Weil is 82. Learned a lot. I know a woman who studied Reiki and there was a time when we ran into each other and she gave me a hug. The energy force was so profound that I remember regretting pulling away from the hug, but I will never forget the feeling. Thanks again.
Dr. Weil was in my household as a child. I was born in 1967 and I remember in the early 70s seeing his books on my parent’s shelves. I have several of his audiobooks that I listen to in my car from time to time, and in my nutritional knowledge arena, he has been a long-standing influence. I am 58 years old and on no pharmaceuticals! That’s my goal as I continue to age is to stay big Pharma free! Thank you for having him on. I would love to see him on your platform again. Thank you! 🙏🏻 😊🌸
I remember back in the 70s when food was food and food was GOOD! It tasted like food and not chemicals or in some cases it tastes like nothing! I remember product 19 cereal omg it was so good and they discontinued it and all the foods I grew up on have now altered flavor because of chemical engineering 😢 it’s not right but at least I got to taste those real pure foods back then cuz I sure can’t now! Even the candy like Kit Kat and Reese’s peanut butter cups are gone! They still look the same but the flavor isn’t there😢 and I picked up some croissants from Walmart thinking they’re okay but got home to see yellow dye in them? It’s a shame I wouldn’t feed animals this stuff😢 actually pet food is probably healthier😮
Dr. Weil’s book introduced me to CranioSacral Therapy, which is now a significant part of my health and my massage practice. I love that you all with such strong science backgrounds support and advocate for the healing power of mind, energy, emotion, etc.
Previously saw a physician who completed the integrative medicine training with Dr. Weil. So fortunate and then moved countries. Thank-you for having Dr. Weil on your podcast. What a gift and as you said, pioneer in the field of wellness. Beautiful heart and sharp mind.
This whole chat was so informative and inspirational. The one thing that really stuck with me is at 1:16 and I'm paraphrasing slightly " I can't do thinks that I used to do in my 30's, so I think letting those things go is a apart of healthy aging." That spoke volumes to me! If you focus on what you may not be able to do, you're missing out on what you can do.
A huge fan of Dr. WEIL since the 1980’s. Thank you for having him as your guest. I am a retired nurse after 45 years of attempting always to integrate non traditional ways of helping my patients through music therapies, relaxation techniques and the mind body connection. All of his knowledge about eating healthier and the mind body connection is available for all through his books and programs!
8 Weeks to Optimum Health by Dr. Weil saved my life. I began to educate myself more about nutrition, emotions, mentality, and how it all works together. It’s a shame, however, that our insurance does not pay for massage therapy, aromatherapy, herbology, psychotherapy, acupuncture, or any integrative disciplines that aid in our wellbeing.
I read Dr. Weil's book, 8 weeks to optimum health, back in the 90's and it changed my life from there on out. I was in my early 30s then, and have managed to stay relatively healthy into my 60s.
Dr Weil's book many years ago.. changed my best friends health. She had stage four lymphoma. Traditional medicine had been unsuccessful in helping her. She literally went from last rights in the hospital sent home to make arrangements for her children to living. She was a thirty year old at the time. She is now 66 years old. Still with us. ❤She told me get Dr Weil's book 📚 and read it ❤ Dr Weil's has been a long time way ahead of the rest..!
@@Alloy-p3u She did his diet and she took raw garlic daily. Something called wormwood collection. It's been many years . I know it cleansed her system and she got well. Yes she did the recommended diet. Stopped eating deli meats. It's all I remember..I am going to order his newest book. I believe once yearly she does a cleanse. No processed foods. Yes she saved herself with diet and certain supplements
My career has been in plant health which adopted integrated methods long before human health care. Plant medicines are called pesticides. Human pesticides are called medicine 🤔
@@Maripeni Yes, not everyone has milk supply, but sometimes that can be increased by things like malta beverage and other diet changes or incorporations and if latching is an issue, pumping can be used. As for larger babies, sometimes that can be a result of gestational diabetes and sometimes can be mitigated with diet changes. There are times that a Caesarean section is needed though, but lately it’s overly used.
Dr. Weill was the impetus for why I became a medical writer. In 2000 I read one of his books and swore off partially-hydrogenated oils (everyone was like huh?). One of my heroes!
I would love to have our health care system healed. Medicine for profit and insurance companies that drive what will and will not be reimbursed and at what rate is what drives the current system. It needs to be repaired.
I have hope that a big announcement and impassioned speech last Friday may help. The US is so unhealthy starting as kids. It's heartbreaking how many kids are on Rx drugs, especially psych drugs...as BABIES. 💔
A dear friend is really sick and they don’t know why she has almost no energy and she has to sleep every single day in the middle of the day. She doesn’t have the energy to learn new ways of eating and cooking, besides loving to cook. She’s willing to do whatever it takes, and she can’t sometimes.so once you’re sick, it’s really hard to gather the inner resources to make the changes that might help your body heal.
@@pippaDlightfulshe is only thirty-something. Her mother doesn’t live in town, but I am pretending to be her second mother to support her. We’re friends, but we’re also very different in age. I try to teach her about cooking more without processed and manufactured foods because I had to do that to save my own health in my 40s. She loves to cook and she quit the job that was a 40 minute commute one way, so I’m trying to help her figure out what works for her now that she has more time. The good news is she has a good community… She has several volunteer groups where she hangs out and she has hobby groups and Church. I met her because we both knit. The Knitting group has several women who are retirement age, including myself. We all take turns doing mom things to help her out. at least we can reduce her stress sometimes.
Sounds like low thyroid. She needs to go for lab tests to find out. She, also, needs to eat a proper diet with 3 meals daily (meat, dairy, fruit & veggies) and no snacking. Avoiding sugar is essential to avoid the blood sugar roller coaster.
O.M.G! This episode resonated with me. Seven weeks safe from DV and able to eat what I choose, in a safe environment, I feel happier, my body doesn’t hurt as much, and I feel lighter in my skin. I will watch this again, and again! With gratitude from Australia . K🌸
I worked in the healing arts as a LICENSED massage therapist. I had a better than normal school that I attended in Nashville. I worked in the field for about 10 years (I started at 40). I fully believe in healing energy and energy fields around our bodies. I have given and received that energy and it works. Somatic healing is possible but the recipient must be mindfully open to it. Great episode! Now...where's my chocolate... :)
Yes!!! I love Andrew Weil!!! The Sound Body, Sound Mind music cd is my go to for healing sleep, and I used it regularly when I practiced neuromuscular massage therapy.
This just reminded me of something, I completely changed my habits by finding out book called The 21 Former doctor secrets by Rachel Morgan. It has been censored
At timestamp 1:58:32 Mayim mentions something that stopped me in my tracks! I have been struggling with a respiratory issue for nearly one full week now and I could not figure out what it is or why I have it. No one else around me has become sick. There are no signs of it being infectious in any way. I just have this periodic tickle/irritation in my throat that makes me cough so hard that my vocal cords are becoming inflamed (not to the point of a medical emergency so please don't panic). When Mayim mentioned her lung complaints being a representation of her grief, I nearly dropped what was in my hands and instantly yelled, "THATS IT!" I struggle with severe chronic grief that is increased from September through early spring. I knew the grief was there. I know what month it is, and I also know that today, September 9, 2024, is 20 years since my youngest child was diagnosed with a brain tumor that would end her life just four months and three days later. I also lost another child to leukemia on November 19, 2010, and my father passed in September 2007. Needless to say, there is a lot of grief during this time of year for me. This lung and throat irritation, cough, or whatever thing that is driving me nuts right now is very likely a somatic response or representation of my grief. Thank you for all that you do here at the Breakdown! I have such a deep appreciation for you all!

@@dianam9028 it's OK, thank you. If I'd known a doctor like him, I would have asked if there were other ways to promote healing or even just help him to feel a little better. I'd have done anything to ease his suffering even a little.
I am so sorry! I lost my father to leukemia back in the early 80s. Even then, my mom told me that my daddy was skeptical of the medical system. He reportedly stated that a cure may never be found (or made available) due to the money that was (& is) being made through all the medicines, surgeries, hospital stays...
Love love love this. I’ve had three cancers and died for 37 minutes and I finally found a doctor that has been helping me get off drugs. I used to take over 20 something pills a day and he said you are on too many pills for no reason at all they have just been the doctors used to get kicked back for all the pills and I’ve had 30 surgeries and still have surgery and I feel so much better being off those drugs so thank you for making this awareness. Love y’all podcast, but for some reason, I’m not getting my notifications half the time and I heard a lot of people on Facebook. Other podcasts are having the same trouble.
Yes, I know for a fact, they get kick backs and offered Trips , Mercedes, lear jets! I won't go to Drs. Or hospitals...even dentist.Had enough ! There out for the buck!!
Love this episode. I have been a clinical PT in our "sickcare system" for over two decades, and it always saddened and frustrated me to observe how people are not guided correctly in self care. I took myself out of the game during COVID and have been providing private therapeutic yoga since. What Dr. Weil is offering parallels yoga science. I also love the episode featuring Sadhguru. Thanks!
Nurses from México we do suffering the same thing with mayority, patient treatment AND interaction with us... AND my father told me about healthy food, old knowledge from His mother heritage ... The mother earth Is our mother AND from It Is the health Process
I did a study abroad program in Mexico and got to live with a Mexican family while I studied. I was not able to prepare my own food. The señora of the casa prepared all of the meals and while they were very good, they were very high and fat and totally different from what I was used to. I started to get depressed because there were no green salads. Very rarely was there vegetable just tons of tortillas and fried meat. Lots of grease. I called it la grasa casa.
I have been fighting for my life for 3 years. Every time I get blood work they say it’s normal. I have a type of kidney disease, doctor said “you can take these meds but be careful because it will cause heart problems” I said no way. I’m 34 young. I read and do so much research on my own because no one is going to do it for me. It’s hard. So hard. Had an iron infusion, lost 11bs and still can’t eat. Went to ER because primary ask me to go for them to say you are fine. I am in Kidney failure. Then talk about food insecurity. Been a few months without a job, the food pantry got me some food, can’t eat half of it because of so much salt. But because I’m so called “poor” I have to accept it and stay quiet. The system is so rigged. . I will heal and I will get better. Please continue doing these videos. They give me hope and help gain new perspectives for my future. ❤

I first began my learning of Integrative approach to wellness from Dr Weil’s book “Eight Weeks to Optimal Health” he is a true pioneer in our understanding of health and wellness. Thank you for this discussion and much gratitude to Dr Weil. ❤
Dr Weil you were the one who changed my course of life in my 30's in a very positive way, and now I am 66. The way you taught about integrative medicine, organic, healthy eating and nutrients, mushrooms, healthy tea etc and my relationship to medication. I Think is why I have maintained a healthier body, and mindset and are a reflection of the things I learned from you so young. Thank you for the gift.
This is amazing! I shared with my whole family. I am also going to pick up some of his books. I have been very focused on my health lately as I just was diagnosed with a Pulmonary Embolism from out of nowhere. I also have Type 2 diabetes and I want to make changes to be healthier. On top of that, I have been making changes in my home to be more aware of what products we use and waste. This episode really spoke to me. Living in Alabama, we have the worst diet here, and I want to change at least how my family and I approach our health.
On the soy front- my mother was told to never eat soy having survived breast cancer 2* to links to breast cancer. She passed this concern down to me. I am a vegetarian and have been eating soy products and feeling bad about it for decades. I am so relieved to hear Dr. Weil on the topic of soy. I am very bummed to hear about pea based meat alternatives being highly processed.
I was told the same thing when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. It was a very small lump, promptly removed. My doctors told me my cancer was estrogen driven and that soy would contribute. I try to avoid soy always. I did not grow up with soy in diet, so that could be a factor it sounds like.
I also had breast cancer that was estrogen positive so I have taken medical steps to remove the estrogen from my body. Since soy has phytoestrogens, I am unsure if my body's receptors can differentiate between plant-based estrogen (phytoestrogen) and estrogen from endogenous sources, so I decided to avoid soy in all forms. It is alarming how many products have soy oil in them!
I had to get off soy really messed with my gut every time I had any food with soy I was really sick but now it’s in everything & I hear family members say they have the same so I am off all processed food
The body stores memories of trauma. Emotions have corresponding chemistry. Emotions from traumatic situations when stored and not processed, will lead to dis-ease of some kind.
It is such a puzzle to figure out nutrition. Many of these topics touched on what I have been curious about. I was vegan for 18 months, years back, and felt so much more energy; interestingly, the pushback from some people and including my nutrition professor was overwhelming. I wish, now I'd been more resolute in my choice . At 67, I'm still going to learn and move forward. Thank you for this podcast!
Wonderful talk! I am 45 and have also been following Dr.Weil since I was a teenager (my mother’s influence…she’s a nurse). He is a national treasure and it’s so uplifting to see people my age promoting messages and information that will positively educate our culture. Thank you for having him as a guest.
Great episode! I was waiting to hear more about HRT. Women need better care in peri and menopausal years. We need to talk more and normalize this conversation!! HRT save lives, marriages, jobs and so much more. You should invite Dr Kelly Casperson or Dr Mary Claire Haver on your show.
Hi, and thank you very much from Chile. I'm going to share this with many of my life companions that we work together & believe in a more comprehensive & integrative health care
Love Dr. Weil’s humble and clear way of communicating and summarizing current research in this field, his lifelong open-mindedness regarding new approaches to supporting our health, and his common sense recommendations. You asked great questions! Thank you all. 🙏 You just got a new subscriber!
New Subscriber....Retired home birth midwife, herbalist, and nutritional educator here...really enjoyed the subject matter... makes me think how far we have come since I stopped working in 2014.
Thank you Mayim for bringing such knowledgeable healers. There are so many amazing modalities available such as acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, breathwork, diet, frequency medicine such as amino neuro frequency. We can be healthy without meds❤
What is so disheartening is indeed we now know that healing is so much more robust than the standard system of "care" we are in, and that we are essentially forced to accept that corporate and political greed is what is running our wellness "industry". (and, quite frankly, dominates every aspect of most industries.) It is refreshing to know that someone as renowned as Dr. Weil is fully aware and educating people, but what can we do with this knowledge if we are actively engaging and participating in a system that is broken? Who will advocate for humanity if we don't collectively educate ourselves and as consumers, take a stand for ourselves and the generations to come? I would love to know how to be part of positive change for true healing in the world that would welcome this approach. It will require all of us to take a stand of some kind in order to "take down" that beast for certain. Thank you for always eloquently and carefully providing us with these guests and helpful topics. The awareness you both bring is always raised responsibly in contrast to so much of what is not accurately being put out in social media these days.
I used to have Graves’ disease. They wanted to oblate my thyroid. I decided to take it into my own hands change my diet changed so many things no longer have Graves’ disease found out. It was an allergic reaction to alcohol, but it’s sad the doctors don’t even try to fix it with food, which is where they should start first, if I would’ve listened to the white coats, I would’ve had a thyroid at this point so glad I am rebellious
same. I had severe leg pain. It was so intermittent. Being over 55 they immediately put me on arthritic meds- which within 2 weeks literally started to make my retinas detach??!! what? yup. Long story short... oils, soy & eggs are my nemesis. I don't take a pill for anything now.
@@beannamated You are helping many people as there are lifesaving medicines. There are some that people rely on to live. Like my daughter who had to have her thyroid removed due to cancer and it closing off her windpipe. Without her medicine she could not survive.
@@jennieoh8543thank you for your kind comment. Yes, there are some lifesaving drugs and I'm so glad to hear your story. I worked with psychiatric drugs and researchers and many of those drugs can cause horrible problems. Several of the drugs I promoted have been pulled off of the market for safety reasons (liver failure is a significant one). I encourage people to do research and be proactive in their healthcare. I wish you and your family continued wellness. ❤
I also grew up in Kaiser. Growing up I was sick to my stomach all the time. My pediatrician told my mom I had a nervous stomach. This caused me to gaslight myself to the point that I have a hard time recognizing when I’m actually ill. When I was 25 I discovered on my own that I was just lactose intolerant. No idea why no one considered that.
Part of the problem is doctors and nurses receive little to no nutrition education as part of their training and what they do "know" and pass on to the patients is often bad information coming from corporate and insurance sources with a monetary, rather than a health motivation.
@@beannamatedcorrect. Doctors are trained to make observations and ask questions that will lead to quick "fixes" in the form of a test or scan or medication that they can bill for. But they rarely work towards eliminating any so-called chronic disease that could actually be healed. There is too much money to be made in keeping those patients alive but somewhat sick so they keep coming back for more tests, more scans, more medications. More stuff to bill for!
omg this is my life in a podcast! I am such a fan of doing everything possible to keep your body healthy! Wearing cotton, using clean products, movement, checking in with yourself, avoiding big pharma and only go to the doctor as a last resort!
I agree with your statement except for big pharma. My daughter had a thyroidectomey and her life depends on thyroid medication. I sometimes get concerned about shortages. Once a mother always a mother :*)
@@jennieoh8543 and also going to the Doctor as a last resort, why not get diagnosied and have things picked up early, have blood test to monitor your health - you can decline the treatment at least initally, but get checked and ctach things early.
Great topic and speaker. You touched on many subjects dealing with health. You should consider having Dr. Brooke Goldner and Dr Michael Greger, whole-food plant based docs, with fascinating stories, research, and results to compliment this program. There are many others I could recommend, but will suggest Dr. Robert Lustig, not vegan, but with decades of research as an endocrinologist whose on a mission to eliminate sugar and ultra processed food. Let them do the talking. Thank you for the consideration.
Re: Shaming for weight. Let's not forget that it's still incredibly common for Drs to shrug off women with serious symptoms by telling them that they just need to lose weight.
@@online5702 - What does that have to do with the fact that doctors who don't want to be bothered to track down the root cause of symptoms commonly blow women off by blaming everything on their weight? Personal example: I had sudden, unexplained weight gain along with multiple other symptoms despite exercising and eating healthy. It took visits to four different doctors to figure out I had a thyroid issue. Most of the doctors told me the weight gain was causing all the symptoms. My experience is incredibly common among women.
@@online5702maybe they don't know how to eat well. Most doctors don't deal with diet and our food system is broken so they really only sell bad food but marketed as healthy. We all need to take responsibility for ourselves but when we get mixed messages it's not easy to get it right.
@@online5702so it's okay to shame them? I agree that lifestyle/diet changes can be made for folks that are fat AND thin. What if lifestyle changes are made without focusing so much on weight? If I lose weight, great! If not, okay, but I feel so much better when I am fit & eating well.
Great episode! I have been treated with acupuncture for almost 20 years and LOVE IT! I ended up seeing a reiki master for treatment and she thought it was important to my health to learn it- so she taught and passed down and I have had my reiki masters for 5 years. It’s hard to explain to people energy work but once you feel it there’s no denying it’s everywhere. She had introduced me to cranial sacral therapy which is AMAZING!!! Probably my favorite. I believe when you are open to learning and you want desperately to heal- you will find the practitioners you need. I see a kinesiologist who had done QBF and I’ve even had Baud frequently therapy…(also amazing) When you learn how the body works as a whole, when you believe you can heal yourself- when you understand the universe and the larger picture… it’s all possible! lol now I need to start believing my eyes can see without glasses 😂😂
Thank you. It is wonderful to hear Dr. Weil, a pioneer. I am always struggling to find the best course of action for my body, i.e., what anti-inflammatory means for me-lectins, no lectins, grains, no grains; do i just need to release the trauma in my body; do i just need a hug? Mayim, I absolutely loved that you corrected "nauseous" to "nauseated." (I always correct that in my head, when I hear people say the wrong word and you did it for me, out loud! I'm smiling.)
One of the things that needs to happen, (IMO) is we have to stop using the term "health care" when what we are really talking about is medical care. Health care is what you do for yourself (nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep), and medical care is what doctors do for you when you are ill or need surgery, etc.
Food is medicine!! Totally agree. Also support the food groups proposed by the Dr. However, please be mindful of the impact of social media’s healthy living movement and its role in initiating eating disorders, such as anorexia. If the Dr’s diet was followed in adequate quantities it would be fantastic, but sometimes vulnerable young people respond by removing certain ‘bad’ types of food from their diet for fear of becoming obese - for a perfectionist, this can quickly turn into severe restriction and ultimately malnutrition and starvation. Health at every size is important as is eating healthy anti inflammatory food. The two are not incompatible, but can be hard for a person predisposed to anorexia from making health choices. Thank you for sharing
I am a firm believer in basic food with as little processing as possible. I wonder about the role raw veggies play in our overall health. Would raw veggies improve insulin resistance? What's so interesting is the way cold veggies are digested in our bodies compared to hot ones. If everyone ate basic food with minimum processing would we be healthier? Surprisingly, one of the most processed foods of all are fruit juices.
Greetings from Jerusalem! My husband is a whole food plant based life coach and personal trainer and we applaud your openness to healing, lifestyle medicine! (Alan Freishtat- he writes for the Jerusalem Post- and I am his wife Sandie)
I've lived my entire life in Tucson and have been under the influence of a Dr. Weil revolution from a young age as my mom was an admirer of his methods. I have also been diagnosed with a long list of medical conditions while having struggles with medical coverage all my life. I was diagnosed with Graves ( total thyroidectomy required immediately to save my life and vision) in 2015 and soon after GERD, non- celiac gluten allergy and a few other allergy and medical issues after that mostly caused by the damage of the thyroid. On the other hand I've only had 1 communicable disease in my life ( chicken pox) and that's standard in my family. I really appreciate this conversation and exposure for more people to understand personal choices and lifestyle are so much more important to your health than medications and a Dr that will gaslight you over your experiences. I have to take certain medications for the rest of my life, but I've found foods and vitamins have replaced many others or improved the work of those I have to take.
Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.
Can you help with the reliable source I would really appreciate it. Many people talk about mushrooms and psychedelics but nobody talks about where to get them. Very hard to get a reliable source here in Australia. Really need!
Yes, dr.porassss. I have the same experience with anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction and Mushrooms definitely made a huge huge difference to why am clean today.
I wish those were more accessible here. Microdosing was the next thing I planned for my husband. He's 59 & facing many mental health issues, probably CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma for 8 days. Sadly, I had to get a TPO because he's 6'6, over 300 pounds, and displaying violent behavior, always talking about hurting others. He's really aggressive. If anyone out there knows about BPD, is it common to have an obsession with violence?
I would have appreciated hearing more of Dr Weil. It seemed like there was a competition for the spotlight. I left after 20 minutes because I didn't get to hear enough from Dr Weil. He is the expert that you brought on the show!!!! The ad length and frequency was extremely distracting
Mayim, thank you for all the questions you asked Dr Weil, its like you have read my mind and asked him all that I wanted to ask! Another great episode to cheer my Tuesday and I don't even need to say it again but I will because you look beautiful as always. Hugs and kisses from Brazil 🫶🏻
It is not Health care it is Sick care.. When my daughter was young she used to like to watch the Pharma commercials because she thought is was so funny how they listed off all the side effects really fast..and how much more damage a pill can do than what it is supposed help..
before I even begin to watch this video, let me say that this is the MOST important guest you could have on, to talk about health through nutrition and lifestyle choices. He has been my guru since 2013, when I discovered him and his common sense approaches to health and healing. There has not been a single thing he has said or written about health that doesn't make perfect good sense and is sustainable. Bravo to you for having the great Dr. Weil on. We can and should all learn heaps of longevity strategies from him. I only wish I could consult with him in either his canada or us office. (if you can, please ask him if he still consults with patients? I've written to his integrative medicine center in Arizona but never received a reply.) Meeting with and consulting him is HIGH up on my bucket list.
Excellent podcast with Dr. Weil 👏🏻👏🏻 GERD was raised a few times & Dr. Weil said having no acid in the stomach is not a good thing. I was hoping SO much that he would have given steps on HOW TO CORRECT IT 😩 I've been on PPI's for 30 years and every time I told GI/PCP/Endocrinologists that it's not normal, they just look at me blankly. TALK ABOUT FRUSTRATING!!!!
Here's a video from Dr. Mark Hyman which talks about how to get rid of Gerd. I've had a lot of gut issues caused from antibiotics - bacterial infection, tumor, etc. Hopefully, you're eating tons of fiber, fermented food (plain kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi) & staying with a whole food diet. From my understanding, Gerd is most likely caused by low stomach acid, not vice versa. I take Betaine HCL with each meal - and add a splash of apple cider vinegar to my water before I eat. If you have constipation, that's likely low stomach acid. You should be going to bathroom at least once a day. ruclips.net/video/Cw11-jKZr9g/видео.htmlsi=jMICcfKcnbmPEOHV
I am the same. I tried getting off them and watched my diet to no avail. When I wanted to get off of omeprazole, I was put on famedodine which did not help.
I kept having reflux for years but when I went back to walking and started eating healthier, it went away. Don’t know if that would work for you but it’s free to try.
When I went keto my GERD stopped about the time I had my first 10 lb weight loss. When I ate excessive carbs or processed foods is when the reflux kicked on. Keto is really just eating clean, no seed oils or legumes, and limit very sugary fruits or carby veggies like potatoes.
I am learning how to be a holistic nutrition coach, yet everything I'm learning in culinary and health coaching is going against what you are presenting and what you present is what my core beliefs are in. I want to implement your truths in what I present to those I help. I want to learn more! Thank you, for this information! Mayim, thank you, for bringing this to light!
Until big corporations are stopped from greed n corruption, gaslighting serious issues, etc. How about our water supplies? With so many humans on all these drugs, how are these dealt with in the waste cycle? Where does it go? Or do these end back up in our drinking water or ground water (then absorbed by gardens?). So many issues to get answers to, then make the changes we need as a world.
Topic of breast cancer - I had it on my left ,I asked my 2 sisters who also had breast cancer . Because I had it on the side that my 3 kids favorited for feeding . So I asked my sisters what side was their kids' favorite side for suckling. Both said their cancer was on the side that their kids' favorite. 2 other women told me it was the same for them . Yet the hospital told me there is no study to confirm that ,and acted annoyed that I brought it up.
I believe it’s Korea, or perhaps Japan, that has a system where you go in every year for a complete checkup, well or sick, which helps educate them on things that might need changing before it becomes an illness. Now I do not know all the full particulars but the more I’ve learned about their healthcare & lifestyle the more I think we should consider adopting some of their ways. ❤
I know Japan does this, I don't know about S. Korea. There may even be some kind of monetary penalty, like a tax, if the person's next checkup isn't better. I think it's a great idea.
I was sick with Sarcoid. I went on a trip to Japan. I started feeling better. As soon as I got back to the States, I went down hill. I felt that the foods I ate at home were making me sick.
I was given minocycline and doxycycline for acne treatment for YEARS and I never knew it was an antibiotic until I became an adult and became very conscientious and mindful about my health in preparation for a healthy pregnancy. I don't know if my parents recognized to ask about or understand the medication more because of the idea that the good doctor was taking care of me and my wants in a supportive way. I didn't recognize, until I started to really care for my health and skincare needs during pregnancy, that a communicative, education- based approach about choices in products, let alone food, was even a process I could seek.
In the last 3 months I have completely changed my eating habits. I have removed all processed foods and anything with seed oils or processed sugars. I now drink black tea and coffee and do not eat deserts. I no longer have joint pain in my hips, back and thighs and only need to do gentle stretches first thing in the morning. I am now basically pain free. I exercise, eat fresh vegetables, beans and healthy fats. My question is about ear infections in toddlers, how would you treat those without antibiotics.
Is this toddler getting dairy or cows milk a lot in their diet? Or meat that was given hormones or antibiotics? Does this toddler eat healthy like you do?
"Healthcare" put me in early menopause! One bad fibroid/endometriosis surgery and I never had another period...or of course, children. There's so many other ways to heal the body. Mayim, I would love a video on menopause and its effects. Early menopause is overlooked, and as a former athlete who thought I was "strong," it has knocked me to my knees!
As a former FNP-C: I had patients switch to other providers because they didn’t want to make lifestyle (food) changes, they wanted a pill. I would have accompanied them had I known, but because lifestyle change is best, I always strongly encouraged that first. (Now I have Myasthenia Gravis) and am 100% VA disabled. So, I’m no longer practicing, but when my friends (who agree w lifestyle changes or healthy supplements) I’ll make suggestions. I am respectful of other providers in the process. Thank y’all for this program. 😊
Wonderful discussion. Dr. Weil has remained so steadfast about integrative medicine. Such a pioneer and cheer leader. I'm glad that the subject of energy medicine was brought up. I became a reiki master in the early 2000's. I volunteered doing reiki sessions at a church and at a facility for cancer patients/survivors and their families. We explained that reiki was a Japanese technique and that the session was for relaxation and to reduce stress. We did not use the term "healing". A major medical facility in my area now offers reiki and/or healing touch. Nice that they acknowledge there may be something to energy medicine, but I am concerned they may be looking at it as another thing from which to profit.
"People want quick fixes." Another barrier to change for people is that when you are sick, inflamed, exhausted, etc. everything feels overwhelming. These states also lead to major brain fog.
Thank you so much for having Dr. Andrew Weil in this episode. I believe that using and eating certain natural foods can be very beneficial to keeping you healthy and have the capability to heal in many ways and to be used as medicine. I really love this podcast, beautiful Mayim! ❤
I implemented Dr. Weils strategy with one of my children who had chronic ear infections. I believe his teaching told me about making my own cough medicine and I make it to this day!
Just a comment on Energy Work: For 11 years I worked as Chaplain for a bigger Hospice in Southern California. At that time they offered education and actual courses in 'Healing Touch' for Healthcare Practitioners. It was an extended curriculum of five or six levels, and especially offered to the Home Health Aides. The relief of anxiety and even pain in 'our' patients was remarkable. That was in the early 2000's. So - something IS moving in the right direction 🙂. Of course I don't know if they are still offering that course - could be that also they flipped to the 'dark side'....
I love you Mayim & Jonathan and I love your podcast! 💗 And my husband and I have been with Kaiser for many years. We can always call an advice nurse who will listen and make appropriate appointments. And we are able to send email directly to our doctors and receive prompt response. We have both been healthy into our seventies and recently both had surgery - outpatient, fortunately. We have both received excellent care with Kaiser here in Oregon and are very grateful. Just wanted to share our experience. Thank you so much for having Dr. Weil on the Breakdown, he is saving lives!
You seem to be a very rare exception! Kaiser killed my niece… diagnosed her w leukemia before even testing her… put her on heavy chemo and endless courses of antibiotics, never having tested positive for an infection. They experimented on her, killed her organs and left two young, uncomforted daughters without their loving Mama
Awesome podcast. Stop me, if you've already done this. Functional medicine specialist Dr. Mark Hyman would be another great person to have on your podcast. He has helped many people with chronic medical conditions, as well. Keep up the awesome work. And, take care.
I've only just started watching so this might be addressed. Most people sadly and unfortunately want the drug instead of changing their lifestyle. Whole Food is medicine!!!.
Longtime fan of Mayim and the podcast here. Very glad you featured Dr. Weil, whom I started reading in the 1980s/early 90s. His early work in the traditional importance of altered states of consciousness -- his book "From Chocolate to Morphine" was seminal -- shifted my thinking considerably (see? -- another use for dark chocolate!). That said: 1. Thanks to Mayim for trying to get Dr. Weil to address *the economic issues* many people face when trying to live a healthier lifestyle. Unfortunately, he went to the "the foods aren't really that expensive" side of it, sidestepping the bigger issue of finding a medical practitioner to work with, let alone coverage for expensive supplements, when folks have limited resources. Because most docs at the big medical conglomerates (like Kaiser, as Mayim mentioned) who take insurances like Medicare and Medicaid are the ones who don't have the time (because they're being carefully tracked for time usage) or the background to help; often, as Mayim said, people don't even get to see the same practitioner consistently. In fact, the boutique doctors who offer these services often don't take insurance at all, or only the most expensive plans, that the majority of people can't afford. This leaves many listeners feeling like this discussion (let alone the podcast itself) isn't for them, because privilege. I don't fault you guys for this, but I'm pointing out that if things are going to change, you can't just leave behind people who can't afford practitioners who support these approaches. This is why they often resort to seeing non-medically trained "therapists" who don't understand the contraindications, drug interactions, and other issues that may arise. Please continue to be involved with forward thinking on how those who are less advantaged in life might be able to access support for these approaches. 2. *Gluten* -- here's where Dr. Weil disappointed. Those of us who suffer from digestive issues when we consume gluten, but don't have celiac disease (not "Celiac's," folks) were ill-served by his flippant remarks. Here's what we know: gluten is contained in foods that also contain one of several short-chain carbohydrates that may not be well-processed by certain people, who often get diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and related gut issues. I was tested for celiac disease at a major medical center. My blood test showed that I was borderline, so they did a small intestine biopsy that was negative for the disease. HOWEVER -- as the field has developed, I was told that there's something called non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and that I should try a gluten-free diet that didn't need to be as strict as a celiac patient's. *It changed my life.* Furthermore, there's now another clue to this puzzle: the group of short-chain carbohydrates are now known by the acronym FODMAPs: fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. The foods that carry these substances sometimes include -- wait for it -- GLUTEN. Not only that, but once the patient follows a special elimination diet and learns which of these carbs they're most sensitive to, they can often add them back in, in smaller amounts, once their gut recovers from the stress of eating too many of them. Case in point: I'd gotten to the point where I couldn't eat beans. Now, as long as I don't overdo it, I can enjoy beans again. Mayim, especially, should explore the FODMAP elimination diet with a trained dietician. This diet was developed by Monash University in Australia; many US medical centers, like Johns Hopkins, endorse it. There's even a free app by Monash U., so that you can look up foods while you're shopping. 3. Finally: Jonathan, you aren't early in talking about *energy work.* Sorry. This is just another wave of interest in it that started in the late 60s/early 70s, saw a subsequent, large wave of interest in the late 80s/early 90s, and on which there are already many books, practitioners, and approaches out there. The 80s/90s wave got a big boost from the popularization of Candace Pert's research in the early 90s. I'm talking Shiatsu, Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, Reflexology, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Louise Hay's work (while I'm not a big fan, Hays has many devotees, like Mayim), crystal/stone/light therapies, aromatherapy, "shamanic" approaches, and more. *What could be new* is your promotion and exploration of these modalities *online.* The concern with that, though, is that -- unlike back in the day -- people think they learn how to do these things by watching someone demo it once or twice on RUclips, rather than commit to learning from an experienced practitioner and putting in the extended work to develop their skills and sensitivity. And dealing with practitioner-client psychodynamics. And more. But that's for you to sort out. I hope you find a good way to do it. (I'm a former licensed massage therapist -- LMT, New York State -- who tutored anatomy and physiology at one of the leading massage therapy schools in the 90s. I went on to become a trained historian at a research university. Life is funny.)
YES! I didn't realize that what I was doing had a name...Integrative health! I do a mish-mash of traditional health care mixed with natural , and it works very well for me! I need to get Dr Weil's books!
I have friends who work in healthcare who suffer from deep moral injury. Theyre still in debt for their education, but no longer agree with the system they must work within. I am a former mental health profesional myself, and a career pivot has been crucial to my wellbeing. We should all listen to our bodies intuitions.
The mental health profession is worst
That is how I feel about education. I firmly believe in public education- but the system is so broken. It kills me some days.

I was a Pharmacist for 20 years and I never would have got through it without Dr Weil. I loved his website and books. I completely resonate with everything he teaches.
I met Dr. Weil at a health conference…..he was standing right next to me and I felt like I was meeting a rockstar ❤
Wow! I would love to meet Dr. Weil!
From hearing him speak here, he’s far better than a rockstar ❤
You were!
I met him briefly when I worked at Random House and he was there for a book release.
After learning from Dr. Weil for 50 yrs, I, at 62, received my PhD, in Natural Health. Wake up people to your control of healing ❤
Holy moly!"
Copilot helped me design all sorts of recipes, including smoothie, for treating various ailments.

Very glad to see Dr. Weil here. He's a healthcare treasure.

Yes, not everyone has milk supply, but sometimes that can be increased by things like malta beverage and other diet changes or incorporations and if latching is an issue, pumping can be used.

I am so thankful for acupuncture,it is giving me my life back, I,also, care for my husband who has a brain injury, and parents with dementia,I do,believe that acupuncture is helping me care for my family members.Cuddles from Canada 🇬🇧🌸🌺🇨🇦🐾🧘♀️M
Glad it was clarified that lifestyle changes AND medication should be used in tandem. My son died of leukemia.
I'm sorry 😞
@@dianam9028 it's OK, thank you. If I'd known a doctor like him, I would have asked if there were other ways to promote healing or even just help him to feel a little better. I'd have done anything to ease his suffering even a little.
Oh sweetheart... im so sorry
I’m so sorry.
Praying you get through this .. complete healing 🙏
Yes, I know for a fact, they get kick backs and offered
Trips , Mercedes, lear jets! I won't go to Drs. Or hospitals...even dentist.Had enough ! There out for the buck!!
I watched because I saw you were interviewing Dr. Weil. His 4-7-8 breath has helped me throughout the years. Great questions for him. He's a gem.
Thanks!
I'm so glad I enrolled in Cornell U's Medicinal Plants Certificate. Spot on timing. 😊

Great idea! I was a pharma rep and know so much more now. I've been looking for some path to reverse my karma, so to speak.
I’m so glad I ran into this podcast
Oh, I wish I could get it!
I got tge scholarship for the Plant-basedNutrition program and it was excellent.

Dr Weil is just the best! So happy to see him here! ❤
I first began my learning of Integrative approach to wellness from Dr Weil’s book “Eight Weeks to Optimal Health” he is a true pioneer in our understanding of health and wellness.
Thank you for this discussion and much gratitude to Dr Weil. ❤
Did he have a book out called .. Dead Drs. Don't Lie?
Thanks so much for sharing, and sending you all the well wishes for healing! 🫶
My grandma was one of the individuals that would heal with her energy/touch. It was so relaxing and healing.
Im a retired nurse and believed in natural medical as well as conventional and most thought i was out there we weren't trained that way
Wonderful talk!

Thank you Mayim for bringing such knowledgeable healers. There are so many amazing modalities available such as acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, breathwork, diet, frequency medicine such as amino neuro frequency. We can be healthy without meds❤
I just love this woman, the way she explains everything is just brilliant

I used to work for Wyeth pharmaceuticals so I seen from the inside how it really works
same. I had severe leg pain. It was so intermittent. Being over 55 they immediately put me on arthritic meds- which within 2 weeks literally started to make my retinas detach??!! what? yup. Long story short... oils, soy & eggs are my nemesis. I don't take a pill for anything now.
@@juliefisheye8079 same. Different company. I carry such guilt for the people I had a role in harming. 😢
I wish doctors would ask about our diets on a yearly basis like they ask about alcohol, drug use and tobacco.
Insurers incentivize doctors to discuss certain things like smoking and do specific testing (cholesterol, for example), psych/mood, and shots.
Dr don't eat better than the patients. Most are overweight.
More stuff to bill for!
mine does.
omg this is my life in a podcast!
Agreed. My daughter is on thyroid meds and is also T1D and is insulin dependent
I have followed Dr Weil for over 20 yrs.He is soo awesome
Sure. But most of these folks aren't getting fat from eating veggies.
@@online5702yes, they likely are eating vegetables so those doctors need to investigate further.
I see a kinesiologist who had done QBF and I’ve even had Baud frequently therapy…(also amazing)
When you learn how the body works as a whole, when you believe you can heal yourself- when you understand the universe and the larger picture… it’s all possible!
lol now I need to start believing my eyes can see without glasses 😂😂
He does NOT look 82! Wow
At all!
I won't eat processed food, and I don't look 78.
Good point!

Is he on instagram?
Yes he is dr.porassss
I would have appreciated hearing more of Dr Weil. It seemed like there was a competition for the spotlight. I left after 20 minutes because I didn't get to hear enough from Dr Weil. He is the expert that you brought on the show!!!! The ad length and frequency was extremely distracting
Thankful Dr Weil is still here.
100% agree…you can’t get away from them now…I mute them
before I even begin to watch this video, let me say that this is the MOST important guest you could have on, to talk about health through nutrition and lifestyle choices.
@@luvfunstuff2 I was doing a low carb diet - kept some whole grains. So I think it has to do with so many carbs too.
Garlic is magic for ears. I'd keep checking it out every other day since you need to be careful of hearing loss
Eighty-two! My mouth dropped open. I used to follow Dr. Weil years ago, thanks for bringing him back to my attention. ❤
"Healthcare" put me in early menopause! One bad fibroid/endometriosis surgery and I never had another period...or of course, children. There's so many other ways to heal the body. Mayim, I would love a video on menopause and its effects. Early menopause is overlooked, and as a former athlete who thought I was "strong," it has knocked me to my knees!
try soil based probiotics?
I love Louise Hay. Not the Hay House so much, but her philosophies and loving self principles are incredible.
Dr Weil, one of my favorite people on this planet~ 💚
As a former FNP-C: I had patients switch to other providers because they didn’t want to make lifestyle (food) changes, they wanted a pill. I would have accompanied them had I known, but because lifestyle change is best, I always strongly encouraged that first.
(Now I have Myasthenia Gravis) and am 100% VA disabled. So, I’m no longer practicing, but when my friends (who agree w lifestyle changes or healthy supplements) I’ll make suggestions. I am respectful of other providers in the process. Thank y’all for this program. 😊
Dr. Weil’s dog in the background is a riot! 😂
Think it needs it's ear checked lol what a cute senior puppers
Gratitude here for sure!
This was phenomenal! Dr Weil is the best representative of what medicine should be. ❤🙏🏻
I've only just started watching so this might be addressed. Most people sadly and unfortunately want the drug instead of changing their lifestyle. Whole Food is medicine!!!.
Yes, they do mention this. Some people can't do some of the lifestyle changes, though, for various reasons. It's a tough problem.
Thank you so much for this episode! It is so important to start talking about these topics and making people aware.
That said:
