Oregon is a fantastic job and I think Dan Lanning will have a ton of success there. As a Georgia fan who loved the job Lanning did in Athens, I hope he eventually leads the Ducks to a national championship. Always kind of liked the Ducks too.
A&M is also a great job. They are located in a talent-rich state, pay extremely well, and have strong facilities and fan support. The fact that past coaches have bombed there doesn’t mean they can’t win more with the right hire. Hopefully they will hire a quality head coach.

Oregon never won a conference title before Mike Belotti (mid-80's). Florida was a sub-500 program with one conference title before Spurrier. Florida State was a girls' school before Bowden. Mike Bellotti won his titles in the early 2000s. The one before that was 1994. There were five conference titles before that 1994 one under Rich Brooks. I get your point, Oregon wasn't a power. But it's just factually incorrect to say they never won a title before Bellotti. Brooks started it, Bellotti continued it, Kelly took it to another level.

Lanning wouldn't take the Alabama job if offered. No coach in their right mind would want to step into Saban's shoes right after he leaves otherwise they're constantly being compared to and criticized for not being as successful him. It's just a setup for failure. Plus he doesn't really have much personal connection to the program other than being a grad assistant there for a little while. Now if the Georgia job opened up he'd probably consider it but I don't see Kirby Smart leaving any time soon.

To compare it to baseball for a second, TAMU reminds me of the Red Sox. During the 86 years they didn't win a world series, they were "cursed", surely they'd never win. Then they got the right people in the right positions and all of a sudden it was a great job and "of course you can win it all in Boston".
The problem now for A&M is that even if they get the right guy, the SEC is going to be more loaded than ever, so it'll be hard to finally win it all

“Explain Dabo to me.” Ok, in Dabo’s own words, when he arrived and was successful there was an appreciation, not an expectation.” At TAMU, the boosters have huge and immediate expectations. Case in point, Jimbo’s plaque at the introductory press conference.
Yes, TAMU has vast resources, a willingness to invest, and a good conference. To be successful though, the new coach will have to be able to navigate the boosters and their say.

This seems to imply that boosters are overbearing and try to override the coach's decisions, which has absolutely not been the case at A&M. They're excited for sure, but if anything they're excessively supportive of coaches like Jimbo or Sumlin. They gave Sumlin a helicopter to fly into high school games. It's not a hostile relationship due to high expectations. The only issue the boosters cause is that they haven't hired a good coach yet. But a good coach won't have to navigate the boosters

Failed to adapt? Sure he failed to adapt to ESPN’s SEC and BiG10 supremacy narrative by beating many of those teams on a consistent basis. ESPN has never recovered from 44-16, and they hate Dabo for it. People seem most upset that he doesn’t use the portal because he happens to believes in his recruiting process. How dare he recruit kids and develop them as opposed to ditching them to bring on portal guys. Dabo has never done things the conventional way, but his way works. It will probably be easier to state in these terms, so that the less informed will understand: Texas A&M CFB HC is an elite setup for the right guy.
If someone wants to make a name for themselves, they can try going to Alabama or Ohio State or USC... but they would be just another guy who won a national title at a blueblood program. But the first coach to win a natty at Texas A&M will be on another plane of existence! If that same coach can win two or more national titles over a 6+ year period... they will join the ranks of the all time elite coaches.
A&M has all the resources, has already won the recruiting battles, has all the money, and is in the best location available in college football. It is the perfect setup to allow the right coach to rise to the pinnacle of the coaching world.

Your Lincoln Riley example is funny. You said that people thought that maybe he would go to LSU because maybe he wanted to be in the SEC... and then OU took care of that after he left. Nope. Lincoln Riley left Oklahoma AFTER they announced the move to the SEC. In fact, it was months and months after the news was public. The OUUT move to the SEC broke in the summer of 2021, and Lincoln Riley left OU in November of that same year.
No one thought that he wanted to go to the SEC... in fact it was widely rumored that he left OU because OU decided to go to the SEC and leave the Big12.
Not a big deal to the A&M story, but just a funny nugget of information.
The ironic thing is that Lincoln Riley wanted to stay in the Big12 because of the relatively easy path to the CFP. He moved to USC because he thought he would quickly build up another easy path to the CFP by dominating the relatively weak PAC12... and then a year later USC announced they were moving to the Big10! LOL Bit of a backfire decision there.

Texas A&M is not an elite job. If you have to have “the right guy”, a unique guy-the best places still do pretty good even if they don’t have the right guy. A&M just doesn’t have the leadership, location, and culture to be elite.

Not every program can knock it out of the park with hiring the right guy to be the head football coach to go win them a national title like LSU did with Coach O! Hopefully TAMU was taking notes! Also, I hear Coach O is available TAMU, just saying!

The only way a program like A&M will ever be successful winning national titles or heck even conference titles is make it clear to the money people that they have no say in coaching or managing of the team period. They agree to pony up the money get out of the way and trust the coach to do his job.

Laning is smart, he'll take the ducks to several Pac-12 championships before he looks to return to the SEC. Dabo isnt wanted by A&M, hell Cle.son doesnt want him anymore as he refuses to get with the times and recuit properly.

I would say thw A&M job is a great job. The issue I see is that it is a natty or bust job. You've got 4 years to win a natty. There is something going on in College Station that is stopping them from winning. When you are that committed to winnimg and you consistently underachieve you need to figure out why. Maybe it's the coaches, idk. Jimbob did win at FSU though. Something is holding them back and people will point to coaching. I think it's something else.

I have to teach Bjork how to make a deal with new head coach: if new HC wants 10 years contract with 80M buyout go ahead to give him with 1 condition: if you don't improve and we have a right to kick you out. In 3 years if you don't win the conference, we will kick you out. In 5 years if you don't win a national championship, we will kick you out.

There has to be other issues going on there. Jimbo at fsu had that team year in and out as a very good team. Given the ACC is the blind and deaf conference. Doesn't matter who you bring in at A&M until that issue is solved they won't do any better.

    • @jamestacular
      @jamestacular 10 месяцев назад +1

Jimbo's last three years at FSU he lost 3 or more games. That's equivalent to 4 or 5 losses in the SEC West. The one time he played Bama he got destroyed. His offensive lines struggled and his QBs paid the price. His offenses after Winston were terrible. A&M should have seen that coming but we were blinded by the W/L record

A&M hasn’t even won a conference championship in 25 years, despite all of their money and recruiting advantages. They have a bizarre culture that somehow makes winning at the highest level impossible even with the insane amount of money they’ve spent. It’s embarrassing.
