Just like Florida they have been a perennial 8-4 team despite having tons of resources and being situated in a top recruiting state. And just like Florida, they have the potential to go on a championship run with a rare HOF coach. They are never going to sustain success just because of their name or logo. It will take more than that (just like it does at Florida). I can think of only 2 teams that can sustain championship level play with any old coach -- Bama and Ohio St. But that's because all the 5 stars wanted to go there. Today with NIL, I don't think even they can sustain it anymore without a top notch coach.
Just look at the entire A&M athletic program...severe lack of titles all around. The AD more concerned with building luxury lounges to coddle the athletes versus getting on the coaches for poor performances.
I'm a fan of Late Kick and a fan of Josh personally, but his schtick of "fans are all dumbasses and only I and a few other elites really know what is going on" is wearing thin, especially when it comes to programs that he does not even slightly understand. While I agree that A&M is a "turnkey" job, the "key" isn't in the lock. It isn't even in the building and it really isn't a key per se. It is more like a combination lock. The new coach will have to know the combination to the A&M lock. It isn't just Xs and Os. It has to be a guy who knows about the traditions and uniqueness of College Station and can mold the new traditions of NIL and the collective with the old traditions that are only present at College Station and make that work with the new generation of college football players. There isn't some guy from the West Coast who is going to roll into College Station and fake being a Texan who loves the traditions of Aggie Land. I really like Lane Kiffen, but Kiffen doesn't have the combination to the lock. Urban Meyer doesn't have the combination. It isn't the SEC that coach will have to understand, it will be have to be A&M. A&M didn't have a problem learning how to play football in the SEC. No coach will have a problem adjusting to that either. It is all the other stuff an Aggie coach will have to honestly love if he wants to sell A&M to recruits. You aren't going to fake out a bunch of Aggies who every single one wear their class ring no matter how old they are. The new guy will have to know about old trees and new trees, midnight yells, walks and pennies. He is going to have to learn about the pain in the ass standing during games (especially when you are a Longhorn who has great seats in Austin, but the worst seats in the house at Kyle Field). I'm not an Aggie, but I'm literally surrounded by them. Literally. lol I can't toss a dead cat in my neighborhood without hitting an Aggie's house.
I hear what you’re saying and appreciate the time you put into it. But as an Aggie, all that tradition crap is irrelevant when it comes to winning ball games. Sure it’s etiquette to get used to it and talk about the many advantages of being an Aggie grad to recruits, but there are other staff members that do that if the HC doesnt. Definitely a combination lock in that he’ll need to have recruiting prowess, HC of P5 w success (unless Schuman who could be sneaky good hire), willingness and humility to adapt/evolve their approach/style and delegate when necessary, and ability to put together the right coaching staff for his players.
I don't see Lane Kiffin as a "risk" the dude has gotten both Florida Atlantic & Ole Miss to play at the absolute roof of their abilities. The roof of Texas A&M's ability is a national championship in an undefeated year.
Ask USC or Tennessee if he got it done. He is a decent coach but, I feel he makes too many risky calls and that has either cost him or nearly cost him games.
@favre4ever39 wow that's a bad take. You act as if people don't learn and grow. "Hey remember the first time you tried something you fail? Just shows you never should have tried!" That's literally your comment.
@@johnw3922 I mean we fundamentally disagree, but when you look at a coach you need to see the full resume not just the recent success. What I see with Kiffen is he makes too many risky calls in games that backfire and allow potential blowouts to become close games or loses. He is also a very expressive coach and I think A&M needs a more down to earth type of coach to stabilize the program after the turmoil of the past few years.
@favre4ever39 dude there is clearly a before and after Alabama version of Lane Kiffin. You're letting the before out wiegh the after, which means you're ignoring the growth that all humans go through. As for "risky plays" that's what has to happen when you're chronically less talented. Kiffin himself said it after the Georgia game "We have to recruit better, Georgia was 27 five-star players we have one five star player." Talent matters and Kiffin has done the most with what he has been given since his Alabama days.
I dont understand these people. They are around my age I think im 41. Why on earth do you think a&m is this great football program? You have never seen them good in your lifetime and it's a good chance your grandpa hasn't either. Georgia is different. They are top dog in the state that is rich in talent and are basically the only real show in their state. A&m is not and hasn't ever been. Get over it. It's a middle of the road program standing in Texas longhorn shadow.
The issue with aggies is they are not a storied programe in the sec like Bama, dawgs, gators ,vols ,lsu and soon texas, and sooners all those teams have won multi Natty aggies havent
Bryan-College Station is an armpit. Tamu’s athletic department administration is cringe (e.g., the faux national championship plaque with fill in the date is a great example). Yes, I agree money can cover up a LOT of shortcomings and they have it in spades. They worry about tradition. Screw tradition. If tamu learns to win in spite of the tradition, lord help us.
TAMU is looking at a hard road ahead. Jimbo's greatest talent is creating a toxic team environment. Just look what Willie had when he took over at FSU. A talented team with a toxic locker room. Go look at TAMU's football team academic standings. Don't look on the field but rather off the field. Good luck 12th man fan base. A Nole who know's how you feel.
They have money to buy, I mean recruit, any big name player in the transfer portal. They are not a "turnkey winner." If they were, then Jimbo would have won far more games. I thought he was a bad hire from the start. He had a couple good seasons at FSU after inheriting Bowden's las team. Look at what FSU was like when he left.
If the “coaching job” is so elite, then where are the elite coaches trying to get in? Where are the exceptional coaches who see and know that college station is a gold mine waiting to win and explode? Where are those coaches???? I think the media figure may be the one who is wrong here.
I understand your arguments and believe your reasoning is sound absent recognizing that they have a weird ass culture. Their colors are not good, their nickname is boring, their mascot is lame, their male cheerleaders are odd, they have a strange military vibe (not cool like service academies), and their location is not exciting. They could probably overcome some of these factors, but the combination is not appealing to many.
Aggy is going to run out of money... especially if they F up this next hire. Their answer for funding all these mistakes is not to reach into their piggy bank, it's to fundraise more... They don't have this money. They never have been a super rich school. And they've never been winners in Football. They are chasing fool's gold.
Well, guess what they did not hire Kirby Smart and that’s the problem they don’t hire the right people. Until A&M gets the right people to hire the right coaches that’s when the landscape will change.
A&M has a bunch of boosters that are meddling with success. Get out of your own way. Let the right guy steer the program. This is college footballs version of the Washington Redskins owned by Dan Snyder.
Does anyone remember when Florida was considered the number 1 job in the country. The is why you don’t rank these jobs. You put them in tiers. And without a doubt, A&M is a tier 1 job.
It's not Tier 1. It's a program with Tier 1 expectations matched with Tier 2-3 historic results. It's a notch below the Tennessee and Florida jobs, a notch above Arkansas.
@@tomac100 Just as an aside, last year sucked for A&M. The year before that, they had a No. 1 recruiting class, they year before that they beat 3 AP Top-10 teams, the year before that they finished 4 in the final AP.
Texas A & M is not a turnkey winner. You can't compare Clemson and Texas A & M. Swinney is having problems sure ---but there is no way to compare those 2 programs. At all. Texas A & M has been through FIVE head coaches since Swinney took over at Clemson. Swinney has had 10 Conference Titles at Clemson. Texas A &M won the last one in 1998 or 97. And Swinney won 2 National Championships and Texas A & M won 1 in 1939. Also the "granted he won 2 titles where as Jimbo didn't win one" -- Jimbo was never even in contention for one. Yeah Swinney hasn't changed but he had a lot of success while Texas A &M was just burning through head coaches
Sorry A&M but its gone be even harder to be a turnkey winner after we snag Cam Coleman from yall over here to Auburn where he always belonged along with a bunch of your portal guys we plan to have our pick of. Hugh Freeze is coming for your roster and recruits.
Everyone knew Jimbo was shady even at FSU. I also disagree that A&M is turnkey. There isn't much of a comparison of GA and A&M. GA always was a tough contender in the SEC but just couldn't turn the corner whereas A&M has never really been a contender in its entire history. Yes, a great coach could turn them around, but it would be like and FSU that by the way was the result of how Shady Jimbo left it. With the way you can throw money at players it should be easier for A&M but you really have to look long and hard for a sound coach. I remember when people considered the SEC championship was the default NC with mostly GA and Bama playing. When Saban came to Alabama they were coming off of a serious probationary period, limited scholarships. Sorry, but this analysis is wrong because Bama has a very rich history of winning NC through the entirety of college football history. A&M is a good school and has the opportunity to be great with a great coach but they are not tunkey and no comparison to Bama and GA.
Mike Norvell is the guy. He danced around the question when asked about A&M, seemingly refusing to shut it down. He's only 42, he's from Texas, and his buyout is only $6 million. FSU can't outbid A&M. And he's about to lose a lot of talent to the draft after this year. I think he might actually be ripe for the picking, and he'd be a slam dunk hire imo.
Norvell isn’t going anywhere. FSU is a better job. In case people don’t know this, Jimbo showed his true ability when Jameis left. FSU didn’t want him to stay after he trashed the program post-Jameis. FSU currently is loaded with underclass talent and recruits mostly through the portal. FSU will be top 15 next year too. A&M will not.
He'd be a fool not to accept the head coaching job at Texas A&M. Anyone would be a fool to not accept that offer. The next head coach that gets fired from A&M will make at least $100 million on his way out the door
@@joehopkins481 Norvell will make more at FSU if he stays. At FSU he’ll be at $8-15M a year for 30 yrs. Several titles ACC and maybe National and a Bowden like legacy. At A&M he’ll be at $10M a year for 6 yrs, get chewed up at a bad place and then I guess just be out of coaching, like Jimbo is
@@askyefic There are quite a few reasons why it would make sense for Norvell to leave that are not salary. A&M puts more resources into its program, the roster talent is currently insane, A&M has better facilities, better NIL, is in the SEC (which whether anyone likes it or not is the conference with the inside lane to be nationally relevant going forward), and like I said earlier, Norvell is from Texas. There are reasons that I could see him staying too, mainly that he's already built something at FSU and it might be daunting to imagine building again. It's incredibly ignorant to say it's all about money and act like A&M isn't an attractive job, but like Josh said, most CFB fans aren't exactly thinkers
How many "do overs" does A&M get? Years ago it was said that Florida was a sleeping giant. Then they got Spurrier and Meyer sandwiched between Zook. I think A&M could be a sleeping giant. It's not one of the top jobs or programs but it may be one of the top opportunities and that's the difference. Someone may make it a destination program but no one has been able to make it that yet. Kudos to Josh for pumping up the Aggy faithful.
There is not a coach alive that can bring a National Championship to A&M. Not even a SEC championship. If they want a Championship maybe they need to move to the Mountain West Conference
Jimbo won at FSU… won it all. I guess he couldn’t handle such a “great job” at AM… it was “too great” for him I guess. When AM gets a trophy with a date after WWII then crow about it being a “great job”

@@MaxQ2989no it’s y’all aTm fans that don’t get it. Jimbo won a title then left and got all what you say you have to offer and did WORSE lol. You have 80 years of “next guys”. FSU had two “guys” in 40 years now, Norvell might be the 3rd. Why all these other schools can find their guys?! Your only argument is you have resources thus it’s the best job. @@flch95 With respect: when Josh Pate refer to people who only think of records he’s referring to people like you, A&M has the money to throw, so far they haven’t hit the right guy. Pate refer in his video to the Georgia case, they were OK but could never cross the finish line UNTIL they hired Kirby Smart. Same with Dabo Sweeney at Clemson, Alabama w/Saban, etc. Regardless of previous “records”, it was the COACH that made the difference as long as the school had the RESOURCES. BTW its not my argument, it’s Pates and many others, I just agree with it, you don’t. Ponder this: if Nick Saban all of a sudden (he won’t) left UA and went to A&M that they WOUL NOT BE INSTANTLY a contender. Of course they would.
@@MaxQ2989 clearly I have a different idea of what a “good job” is. Resources are just a part of it. LSU, UGA, Alabama, OSU, FSU, Clemson, Oklahoma, Texas, Michigan, Miami, Florida are all better jobs IMO because those programs have demonstrated that they can bring in multiple coaches and win titles in the last 40 yrs or so. There is something intrinsic to those places that lend itself to that success I don’t know what that is but the evidence is there. Miami has FIVE titles without your “resources”. I’d think it’s statistically impossible that in over 60 yrs you can’t find not one coach to win? Now again i don’t know what the issue is and I feel for those programs with long droughts. You deserve a title. But…clearly there’s more to it than just money, though it certainly helps. We don’t have to agree.
Pate is playing numbers. Pate could be a great college coach (put him ATM). He could be a great High School Coach (you better be a 3-4 star by 10th grade though). He would be great at White-Westinghouse. GRrrreat numbers guy, as long as the numbers line out on paper.
They tried to to TurnKey with that fake National Championship Trophy. To be honest, aTm is a mediocre program and would need to elevate itself to a level they have never achieved before.
A&M not a turnkey winner now and will be even less so when all of the talent hits the portal. Coaching job there is horrible because fan base feels entitled to a top five FB program.

What about Urban Meyer???
It’s not a turnkey winner because of the neighborhood they live in. Bama, LSU, UGA, UF, TX, OU, and others are all living in mansions as well.
Josh has many excellent ideas
5 years from now we'll be having the same conversation.
Exactly. Because it’s the culture of the program. From top to bottom. But no one I’ll say it. Gotta worship money.
I am really sorry you live by so many Aggies
Have you actually been to College Station? It's not an elite job. If it was, Bear Bryant would have stayed.
Jackie would have stayed as well.
Its only a&m fans who talk about their school being the best job 😂😂😂
A&M is more like a Turkey Dinner instead of a Turnkey Winner
You are delusional. Ole miss will win more than Texas am. Why do y’all think y’all are national champion caliber?
We need a case study on the delusion of this program.
It's called being an aggie
I dont understand these people. They are around my age I think im 41. Why on earth do you think a&m is this great football program? You have never seen them good in your lifetime and it's a good chance your grandpa hasn't either. Georgia is different. They are top dog in the state that is rich in talent and are basically the only real show in their state. A&m is not and hasn't ever been. Get over it. It's a middle of the road program standing in Texas longhorn shadow.
100%.
Pate State material!
The issue with aggies is they are not a storied programe in the sec like Bama, dawgs, gators ,vols ,lsu and soon texas, and sooners all those teams have won multi Natty aggies havent
And that hurts us how?
lmao you’re the exact guy he’s talking about…that doesn’t matter.
Link to academics?
A&M should not give 10 years contract. Just only 5 and you cannot win after 5 years you go home. No buyout.
Kliff Kingsbury
So Texas A&M is the Saudi Arabia of college football. Lots of money, not a great destination, yet to relevant.
Ummn… they were one year ahead of almost everyone else to figure out NIL. Ya play the game the way the refs are calling it.
If the “coaching job” is so elite, then where are the elite coaches trying to get in? Where are the exceptional coaches who see and know that college station is a gold mine waiting to win and explode? Where are those coaches???? I think the media figure may be the one who is wrong here.
well, genius, we had 1 of 4 sitting coaches with a Natty and all you have to do is wait a few weeks to finish answering you're own question
@@ChrisC-bm7sp Thank you for recognizing my exceptional intellect. It gets hard sometimes seeing obvious things that others don’t.
Elite if you like big money and only need to win 9 games to keep job
The last two coaches were fired fire for topping out at 9 games…
Matt house needs to be the next HC for the ag’s
A&M Elite 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Well, guess what they did not hire Kirby Smart and that’s the problem they don’t hire the right people. Until A&M gets the right people to hire the right coaches that’s when the landscape will change.
Kirby wanted Georgia and everyone knew it…
You are regurgitating what Josh said lol
Thor: "Is it... though?"
A&M has a bunch of boosters that are meddling with success. Get out of your own way. Let the right guy steer the program. This is college footballs version of the Washington Redskins owned by Dan Snyder.
Fire Ross Bjork, the A&M athletic director!!
Does anyone remember when Florida was considered the number 1 job in the country. The is why you don’t rank these jobs. You put them in tiers. And without a doubt, A&M is a tier 1 job.
@@tomac100 Clueless take. A&M has all the resources the RIGHT coach could want or need to succeed. That alone makes it tier 1. See yourself out.
@@tomac100that’s because they have not made the right hires and when they had Slocum they did not commit to facility upgrades and whatnot
You don’t land the #1 class of all time if you aren’t a tier 1 program. Some of you are beyond clueless.
Yeah Swinney hasn't changed but he had a lot of success while Texas A &M was just burning through head coaches
hahhahhahhahaaAahahahhhahhahh....GO NOLES!...AAAAAAHHHAHHHAAAAHAHAHAHAH...I LOVE IT
Sorry A&M but its gone be even harder to be a turnkey winner after we snag Cam Coleman from yall over here to Auburn where he always belonged along with a bunch of your portal guys we plan to have our pick of. Hugh Freeze is coming for your roster and recruits.
Hugh Freeze!!!
There it is. There he is. 100%.
Imagine if HF had waited one year...ONE YEAR!!! I do not believe he could have counted his net worth
Dabo is going to make you eat your words… and I have been critical of him in 2023. Get ready for your dinner
Hows the poverty A&M, Signed, FSU fan.
Turnkey.... wtf are you smoking? Average at best is all A&M football has ever been!!!
What about Tulane head coach, he is older than American itself; but, he can coach.
ATM head football coach is NOT an ELITE job in college football. Only DELUSIONAL ATM alums think that.
It's on par with Ole Miss or Vandy. 😂
Lmao keep believing that buddy
Josh Pate is the shit
Mr. Clean lookin dude
Jimbo hasn’t had “his” qb in a few years.
You must have meant effete.
The fact you can make your kids kids kids generationally wealthy is about it.
They should hire Bill Belichick
At A&M he’ll be at $10M a year for 6 yrs, get chewed up at a bad place and then I guess just be out of coaching, like Jimbo is
@@joehopkins481 if money were the only reason Norvell is coaching I guess that makes sense.
They will absolutely go after Lane Kiffin
There is not a coach alive that can bring a National Championship to A&M. Not even a SEC championship. If they want a Championship maybe they need to move to the Mountain West Conference
Kirby would not have takin the job. He wanted GA.
Its just a hypothetical saying he wouldve won at a&m if he went there
Jimbo won at FSU… won it all. I guess he couldn’t handle such a “great job” at AM… it was “too great” for him I guess. When AM gets a trophy with a date after WWII then crow about it being a “great job”
You just don’t get the point…watch this video again, while facing a mirror and when Josh refers to people that don’t get it, look up and see who is looking back. He’s talking about you…
Jimbo also coached in a much easier conference.
@@MaxQ2989no it’s y’all aTm fans that don’t get it. Jimbo won a title then left and got all what you say you have to offer and did WORSE lol. What makes you think the next guy you steal and throw money at will be different? It’s always the “next guy will be it”. Well shit man, how many next guys you expect to steal? You have 80 years of “next guys”. FSU had two “guys” in 40 years now, Norvell might be the 3rd. Why all these other schools can find their guys?!
Your only argument is you have resources thus it’s the best job. Now I don’t know what your problem is and I honestly feel for you guys who haven’t won in so long but many guys now have won, you stole them to aTm and they don’t win. That’s something worth figuring out.
Texas A&M should be banned from sports for wasting so much money while students and parents struggle to make ends meet to pay tuition.
The football team is self funded and donated, missed me with that try again
