    I consider it to be the best Tennis match I have ever seen.
    Despite the slow surface, both the players played fine grass court tennis.
    It was a privilege to watch.

    Those backhand approach shots and those lobs by Edberg should just be shown to any child born anywhere in the world, regardless of whether they aspire to play tennis. It's just good for the human mind and soul. What artistry!

    Thanks for this post. A really excellent matchup. Ah, the good old days, when there was still a serve-and-volley game. Look at these guys, playing like they're on a hard court, rather than "slow" red clay. If Stefan or Boris were in their prime playing today, they'd both be in the top five.

    • @mikemoggerson6651

      No. Definitely not Edberg. It’s hard to say since he grew up playing with different technology…but the power from the baseline would be bested by a modern day 14 year old. Both are terrible from the baseline in comparison to modern players. Sports in general were far less competitive even 35 years ago. Becker had pretty poor baseline play, whereas Edberg’s was more dependable but lacked any power or weapons. Both would be no good today…but it might be a different story if they grew up with today’s training and equipment.

    Edberg's movement was silky smooth on all surfaces and the difference between him and Becker on clay was movement. Edberg was just too quick and the way he defeated Mancini (who won monte Carlo, Rome 1989) in the quarters in straight sets was stunning. Becker fought really hard, but edberg was just better on the day.

  • @abubakar.mehmood
    @abubakar.mehmood 8 лет назад +5

    Excellent effort by Becker to come back but Edberg was simply better overall. Even on clay court, what a beautiful serve-and-volley game this man pulls off. In fact, the slower surface gives him more time to get to the net. Such a pity he never won the Roland Garros.

    • @PinkasBrown44

      +Abubakar Mehmood I think Becker would have thrashed Chang in the final. Edberg got way too much caught in the american´s game, instead of trying to impose his, something that Becker always did against Chang. In the end, both Becker and Edberg would have deserved that French Open more than Michael Chang, if you ask me.

    • @fundhund62
      @fundhund62 2 года назад +1

      Edberg was more mentally stable on that particular day.
      Don't forget Becker destroyed him on clay at the Davis Cup final just six months prior.

    adoravo Edberg, solo più tardi ho rivalutato Becker. Due straordinari campioni, grandi sportivi. Questo successo è uno dei tanti inanellati da Edberg dopo essere stato in vantaggio di due set, ripreso, ed infine trionfatore al quinto (vedi Wimbledon 1990 sepre contro Becker). Incredibilmente molti giornalisti si sono accaniti contro di lui imputandogli mancanza di carattere e grinta, niente di più falso

    nowadays people rally a lot, this for me is the more attractive tennis, they dare to come to the net to make the point, not just waiting with their 100 square-inch racket face at the baseline for a mishit of the opponent, definitely wishing the Becker-, Edberg- and Sampras type of players to be around on todays tennis..... thanks for posting this!

    What a wonderful match...
    Various attacking tennis on clay is tennis at its best because there are actually rallies. 80/90's grass game with only s/v was terribly boring and only moonballing is not better..
    THIS is tennis though, probably the greatest match they ever played against each other.
    By the way H2H ended up 25-10 for Becker but if I am correct no less than 22 of these were indoors, Becker's best "surface".. Edberg was actually ahead outdoors and won 3/4 GS-meetings as well.
    By the way, what about Roger-Rafas H2H if they had played the same amount of indoor matches as these two..?

    • @gregthorpe1957
      @gregthorpe1957 9 лет назад

      +TheSportfane no you are wrong....completely wrong with your facts, sorry. 9 of the 25 wins of Becker were outdoors.. he was a better all-round player than Edberg. the record actually is 25-9 as Becker retired because of injury in the Paris open final 1990.

    • @stones8484
      @stones8484 7 лет назад

      injury is part of the game so 25-10

    • @TheSportfane
      @TheSportfane 7 лет назад

      Mike Thorpe well, did you even bother to read what I wrote..? I never claimed that Becker's wins were all indoors, it was their total career meetings and 18 of them were on carpet, the fastest surface. Becker's serve was very tough indoors but Edberg had a few wins indoors as well, it was only that Becker was stronger indoors.
      Yes, Becker was a better all around player but Edberg was faster and was still 3-1 in GS.
