    Stefan was not playing, he just was flying on the court! Simply amazing player (and I'm a Becker fan)

    You know what the coolest thing about Edberg was? Not the flawless net play. It was that every time he shook an opponent's hand after beating them, he'd be shaking his head a bit and had this look of disbelief on his face like... "Dude, great match. Don't know how I beat you." Humble, talented, hell of a champ.

    Look at Edberg use Chang's speed against him. Served down the tee and volley behind him. Master.

    Serve and volley tennis at its best!!

  • @jerseyneil1
    @jerseyneil1 6 лет назад +10

    Edberg has the best backhand volley of all time. Very little backswing, a short punch with under spin, great anticipation - it's textbook. No wonder Federer hired him as coach.

    • @fundhund62
      @fundhund62 6 лет назад

      I prefer McEnroe´s backhand volley any day of the week! Also, Roche and Laver were pretty awesome in that regard, too!

    • @jerseyneil1
      @jerseyneil1 6 лет назад

      McEnroe also considered Edberg's backhand the best on the tour, although Mac has an overall better placement on his serve which makes his volleys easier. I will agree that Mac at his prime was way better than Edberg. Laver did everything well but that was a different era and an entirely different game than today's game.

    • @fundhund62
      @fundhund62 6 лет назад +1

      @@jerseyneil1 Volleying technique doesn't change much, though. Edberg had the added advantage of newer racket technology, while guys like Laver, Roche and McEnroe looked just as smooth using a wooden racket!

      Consider the top ten players in the 80s, besides Borg, Connors and McEnroe, including Eddie Dibbs, Harold Solomon, Gerulaitis, Gene Mayer, etc. Guys like Dibbs and Solomon were way out of shape compared to today's athletes. They had tennis talent but had no fitness regiment. I doubt if they would even be in the top 100 today. Mac started using a midsize graphite Dunlop early in his career. First the Maxply graphite and then the 200G injection molded racquet. Borg and Connors were the only ones to stick to conventional racquets during most of the careers. Today's players are real athletes, stronger, fitter, and taller. Look at a guy like Isner at 6'10" and can serve 150 mph. The average height of a top tennis player during Laver's time was 5'8", today it is over 6'. Yes, equipment has made a big difference but today's players are real athletes.

    Edberg learned tennis on a basketball ball court. That wood is extremely slick and that’s how he learned to glide across the court hitting everything on the rise with the same grip for almost everything. His legs bigger than tree trunks. Perfect height for a serve n volleyer. Quick twitch muscles. Can watch him all day.

    • @TheMightySandow

      Nonsense, he learned to play on a clay court and even had a two handed backhand when starting out

    Edberg started out as a baseline player with a double-handed backhand. His backhand wasn't his best base either. But he changed to one-handed backhand and volleyball player. Quite incredible indeed.

    Becker and edberg my favourites. Best serve and volley game you can see between them. And not to mention about their backhand. Next Sampras and now Federer.

  • @marctravismba
    @marctravismba 5 лет назад +4

    As a kid, I patterned my kick serve after Edbergs. It was far more effective than my flat and slice serves, even with less power. It was a great serve, but did a number on my back. :(

      The serve motion was beautiful, but he actually changed his grip halfway.
      He didn't have as big a serve as Becker or Sampras, but definitely a more serve n volley purist in the classic mold. Textbook volleys

    Edberg had great feet... the backhand came naturally to him, too, especially on volleys. the forehand from the baseline did not, however. that was the only awkward thing in his game... you can see how he brings the racket back, comparing backhand to forehand - with one he is relaxed and smoth, whereas with the other he has probably too much tension.
    i'm not sure why Chang didn't go forehand-to-forehand with Edberg more during this match as it seems to me that would have certainly worked out better for him?
    easy for me to say, though, from my couch!
    Edberg was one of my favorite players ever and everyone, of course, liked Chang. i don't remember them playing all that often. did they have much of a rivalry?
    that was a different age of tennis (very enjoyable). i don't think players from different eras can be fairly compared. still, i'd hazard the opinion that Federer has elite (to put it mildly) feet and hands, which would probably place him above just about any other.

    He could hit 115 mph aces, but the kicker w placement ++ . Good placement too. Rafter also textbook. 97-98 US open sent Sampras home.
