The tennis federation allowed the removal of wool from the tennis balls replaced it with polyester fibers. Bigger rackets. Changed all court surfaces to play basically the same. Equals a monolithic sport
Still remembered I put an alarm at 1.30 am watched this match in DD. Die hard Fan Edberg, that day Edberg simply superb what a serve and vollyer I had watch full match those days. Now a days serve and volley game completely wiped out . I like players of Edberg Becker, Stich, Yanic Noah all are masters of serve and volley players.
Gotta love Edberg!! Classy all the way! Great serve and volleyer!!! His kick serve is always one of my favorite serves! The motion, the kick is just awesome!
Stephan ekberg was graceful, good sportsman, serve volleyer. Not like the give me a towel on every point today..a true gentleman, on and off the court.
12:25 - maybe the best point i've ever seen. There are trick shots and there are trick shots followed up by another great shot. Degree of difficulty and how well this ball was struck was INSANE.
Lendl did and does like & respect Edberg for what he achieved & they got on as people on the tour as I understand it from various sources. An observer below commented that this match saw some bizarre play from Lendl who had indeed crushed Edberg a fortnight before in New Haven & had an astonishing record second to no one of 8 singles finals on these courts so in fact would have expected probably to have had a much closer match & probably to have won it. However I read years ago (& what is less well known) is that Lendl found out that August prior to this US Open the cause & extent of the damage to his back which inhibited him considerably during this match along with the hand surgery he had had earlier in the year. Although the hand recovered the back just got worse and ultimately caused his slightly premature retirement in 1994. Premature in that he was basically still competing at the very highest level when medication or therapy had alleviated the pain - check out the 1994 Sydney final against Sampras & the Oz Open that year. Some astonishing play during a short period where he could mover more freely. Damn bodies. They break!
@@iamtman1 ..peak Lendl at US open could have definitely beaten Edberg. Post Wimbledon 1990, Ivan was no longer a force. Even Edberg said that 1985 to 87 Lendl was almost impossible to beat.
@@amitmarathe232 edberg beat lendl as early as 1985 on edbergs best surface, grass, at the australian open, so it wasnt impossible to beat lendl during that period
Dont know how many noticed but Edberg had some "pop" going on his serve in the semis and particularly in the final against Courier. Normally his serve was set up for the volley, but in some of these matches in the 91 USO, he did up the ante on his first serve. He also generally appeared a bit more muscular than in the previous years.
Lendl was beat up by this time in his career. His back and hand were betraying him, he had been worn down by a decade of high level play. He just couldn't move well anymore...
Lendl had decent volleying skills. With all his weapons (serve, return of serve, forehand, movement), I never understood why he never came to net more often to finish points.
What a brilliance by Lendl that back down, at that stage moved the better; was an all round. Edberg could play as well off the court, Lendl could not cover more. 11/10 😘Hypothetically it's true that Lendl lost to Vilas, Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Becker, Cash, Wilander, Edberg. Was Bill Tilden the best player in Us open history combat. As teenage fact. Bill Larned as latest at 42: yrs. Sears being the third by winning margin of 7: we can bury 'em in peace.🤑
Sure Edberg favored charging to the net.. and is therefore known as a "specialist".. ; even though Lendl obviously favored baseline rally's .. his serve volley was as good as Edberg's.
What are you talking about? Djokovic and Nadal are two of the most dynamite athletes out there today. Serena, Venus, Sharapova, Osaka, Coco, Azerenka, Stan the Man, Murray... all entertaining! Federer is pretty boring though!

Game move on. He will get smash against top county players
You are clueless. Edberg and Lendl would be great in any era.
Caught Lendl with a gutsy first serve change up kick over his head.
Both were superb players...
Stephan ekberg was graceful, good sportsman, serve volleyer. Not like the give me a towel on every point today..a true gentleman, on and off the court.
God i miss the early days of 90's
Edberg era un vero campione, non solo come talento,ma anche come educazione ed eleganza

The way Edberg played vs Lendl In this match, and the next vs courier, there’s no Lendl that could have beaten him.

Edberg moved into net after the serve quicker than any other player. Lendl and Edberg simple service motions.
And Stefan replay at 12:38 ... this is the tennis of legends
lendl liked edberg. rare to see him so amiable during the handshake, particularly after losing a match
Everybody loved Stefan!
Stefan was always gracious, win or lose. Ivan responded in kind. By his standards, this was almost a hug, though. 🤗 😅
Greatest serve and volleyer ever
Tuan Tran. Besides John mcenroe.

super match for edberg
Great shot of Ivan at the 5:19 ... a real champion shot

12:31 great
At 5:39 that was nifty from Lendl!
Lendl 5:20 and Edberg returned the favor 12:30 lol
I remember that during the match. Props to you for catching that. This is awesome.
holy shit! and at 12:30
Edberg n 1 ever
Pity not more serve volleyers nowadays to challenge Nadal Federer
was Lendl fighting for the French?
LENDL👍👍👍

Yup

Mary was crazy to say that Edberg's groundstrokes were as good as Lendl's.
His backhand certainly was.
On this day, they were. xD
WOW...Roger Federer was only 10 years old during that time.
Really wow
Who cares!
We've all been ten years old at some point.
Je pense que Stich aurait posé davantage de problèmes Edberg que ne la fait lendl, pourtant encore affûté lors de cet USOPEN 91
12:27 !!!!!!

Howard Head invented the oversized racket because he said he was old and couldn't see.
When you would not maintain a standard and go for the money. Baseball and golf kept theirs. Guess I'll play paddle ball.
probably edberg would hv never won a single match in his life if he was not allowed to serve n volley, and thereby shorten the points (lol)
Edberg had double-handed backhand and was the baseline player first. But changed it totally as you see.
Not true! He reached a French open final playing a’lot from the back court.
Game move on.
Jeez, all serve and volley. So boring. More brakes than actual play. Tennis is much better today.
I think we've skewed too far to the baseline game.
A mid point would please me.
Are you kidding! Edberg was great to watch serve and volley. Today everyone ( except Federer) plays the same .
Today's tennis is an abomination. Serve and volley tennis was a glorious art. It was so much more interesting to have players with contrasting styles.
