Not for a beginner but I would like to have a request. I play flute for years but not as a proffesional, I have played Devienne methods. After these I only played songs or partes from the musicals. Could you give me an advise about what to play, how to exercise? I finished methods so people say me play the songs you want but I feel like I can find advance methods to keep practising, because when I practise with only songs I can not practise certain things, they are not common as thrills. The signs like ~ etc. can not be found on common songs so I started to forget signs. How can I practise I look my old books sometimes but they are not satisfying.
What other beginner flute topics would you like me to cover? Among other flutes, including the concert flute, I also play the fife flute and pan flute. Do you have any encouraging comments on these two flutes? 😖
Why didn't you mention the shift with the chin when going into the octaves, to get them to an actual octave. Since faster air alone will let the octave seem to be too small
Not a flute guy but you were in my cue and you are funny. If you are looking for topics, Adam Neely (also a youtuber) did a video on the difference between classical and other types of musicians. That might be a good topic from a classical musician's perspective.
Katie probably won't see this but I started watching her in 5th grade and she inspired me so im in band this year and I play the flute and I am second chair. I am proud of myself because I would get teased because the way I tounge. And I am excited because I am able to go to a atrium and play for the people there. I have gotten so far. And this amazing lady helped me get this far.
I want to learn flute along with my clarinet but I can’t find a good video to help me but Katie’s video was clear and I could understand what she was saying. Good job Katie 👍🏼😁
Ahh, fellow clarinet here!! I want to learn another instrument bc I think it’d be fun but I’m a lil nervous about learning something I’m so unfamiliar with
I actually learned to play the flute in middle school back in 1981. My mom had me rent a flute because she wasn't sure if I would stick with it but after a few years it was paid for. I played throughout high school and was involved with marching band which I loved. As I got older I played less and less until it just sat in a closet. Because of all the moving around I did, it got left behind accidentally. Last year I found a good deal on a new flute but since I haven't played in like 30 years, I have to start over and relearn. That's why I'm watching this video.
Yeh I’m pretty much the same, played all through primary school and middle school, became the lead flute in the school band, it’s now 16 years later, found my flute and all my old music books and I remember nothing but how to hold it and blow in it 😂
College student here! I have to learn a woodwind instrument to become a music teacher and I picked flute. I was excited to start but could make a sound lol. After watching your video I can now successfully play C, B, A, G, and F in both the lower and the higher octave even occasionally! Thank you so much for your video I feel much more confident now
am i beginner? no not yet but will be soon. will i be re watching this video again sometime in my near future? Yes yes i will. Why am i subbed? Because Katie is aweseome.
2020 resolution: Learn to play my Gemeinhardt flute again, which i packed away 50 years ago! (Got a COA before starting on this mission.) Thanks for the excellent refresher!
Denise Joyce the same for me! I took out my old dusty flute to play again after many years without touching it. A pleasure but also a struggle to produce a good sound in the third octave!
I’m going into band in 7th grade which means I’m 2 years behind everyone else, but your videos are really helping and even though I’ll still be behind, thanks to you I won’t be as behind. Thank you! ☺️
I’m literally in the only auditioned class in my whole district which is my honor band yet i’m still watching this. why? because we flute players support each other ❤️
I haven’t played flute in years like 30 years so I’m a beginner somewhat thank you for clear instructions and the charts how to place our fingers it’s slowly coming back to me your awesome ❤
Thanks for this video. I am from India and today is the first day I brought the flute (though I have played indian bamboo flute) and I could play 7 notes in this after watching this video. You made this looks so simple and easy to learn and play. Thanks for this.
This is a very sad and a happy story. When I was in fifth grade the teacher called for those would be in “band” to go to the band room. I was so excited!! I went too. When we arrived the leader began handing out the instruments. When it came down to it, there wasn’t one for me. HMMMMM!! Dumb 5th grader. I didn’t know that your parents had to be in on this and purchase an instrument for you in advance. So, I taught myself to make up songs and play the guitar. When I was around 21 I bought myself a 12 string Yamaha guitar. By then I had been married, divorced and had two little boys to raise, so money was tight. I learned how to play pretty good though and loved it. I married again at 23 and taught my new man how to play guitar. He grew up playing an accordion and could sort of read music. I taught myself theory and we had a great time learning together. When I was about 40 a dear friend of mine who played piano gave me her old flute. It was in need of rebuilding etc so it stayed put away. I was recently cleaning out a closet and found it. I now could afford to have the necessary work done on it, so I did. My family now plays drums, (my son) acoustic guitars, (myself, hubby and sons) electric guitars, (sons and hubby) accordion, (hubby) flute (daughter) and now, I’m going to learn the play flute. I’m going to start my learning session with this teacher. She speaks my language. I’m 69 now. And still loving music!!
I’m glad it worked out in the end! I hate how some places you have to have your own instrument to join band. I’m lucky, the school systems near me have instruments that are owned by the school and are lent out to students for the years they are in band at the school. The catch is you don’t get to choose your Instrument, they ask grade 6 students who want to join band in grade 7 to write down the top three instruments they want to play. My friend and I both got our top choice at the time, clarinet, and both were in the same class at band camp. Grade 8 I auditioned for saxophone but got a bass clarinet (I had no clue what it was). Now fast forward to high school I still play bass clarinet and enjoy it more than in junior high, I also got a tenor saxophone a few months ago, and just rented a flute from a local music store to try out for a month. I’m wanting to buy a bass clarinet before I graduate high school that way I have at least one of the instruments I currently play. There too expensive to buy both bass clarinet (3k) and a saxophone (2-3k) right away, especially since I only work part time. Flutes are cheaper though, so if I get the hang of playing the flute and want to continue with it(I probably will) then I’ll look into buying one, probably a second hand one from the music store for a couple hundred.
You had to purchase your own instrument? Was the school too poor to provide their own instruments? But hey, buy an instrument to keep it. I got a personal trumpet and I enjoy playing it from time to time so I don't have to look forward to playing in bands to keep one
I'd love to see a vid focusing on how to control breathing on the flute. I'm an adult restarting the flute after 20 years and I find it hard to control breathing and this vid made me remember how difficult it is to control breath on the flute. Thanks for the video, Katie!
Breathing is a tricky aspect on the flute. The reason it is tricky is because we flutes have no resistance whereas other winds are blowing against something. We have to create our own resistance. In a nut shell that is done by breathing while expanding both the stomach and the rib cage. Then when they are expanded you tighten the muscles and control how fast the air comes in. This creates that resistance which supports the tone.
@@DoctorFlute Thank you! It's always helpful to get advice from someone who isn't trying to re-enter flute playing after... too many years. I will take your advice to heart!
I just would like to THANK YOU for this video. My 10 yr old brought home his flute today. His father and I have never played any instruments, we had no clue on how to help him learn to play the flute. Your video has him playing a few simple notes and even Mary had a little lamb, in less than an hour. He's so excited and really proud of himself. He even asked to spit rice everywhere.. 😂 but thank you so so much. The pure joy your video has brought to his face knowing he can learn from your videos is priceless. Plus mom is learning how to help him too. LoL .. I always wanted to play the flute but never had the opportunity. So him and I are watching your video and I'm learning by watching him. This is amazing!! Thanks to you he is a proud soon to be little flutist. I know he won't give up even if he struggles a bit at first all because of you❤️❤️
I haven’t picked up my flute in 20yrs and this video helped SO SO much on remembering the little things like speed of air. Thank you for all the details!
Thank you so much! My older sister played the flute in middle/high school, and now Im here, and need to play it too, but Im nowhere NEAR as good as her and this helped so much! Thank you so much!!
I watched this video when I was just starting flute and I’m so glad I did, I’ve had some of my fellow group members asking how I know how to position my mouth and other things. I usually say I watched a video before starting lol. But I also think I had a natural talent cause things that weren’t said were easy. Such as vibrato, lord that came so naturally. I found the tonguing section SUPER helpful. The rice technique is perfect. Thank you (:
This launched me I believe. I play a wooden flute, guitar, piano, dobro, harmonica, and I sing. I literally just got the flute about an hour ago and I can already play a c major! (Doesnt sound very well Haha) thank you so much. This is the best beginner video, I thought it would take me days to make a sound haha
I do have multiple instruments too like wooden transverse bamboo flute, ukulele, guitar, diatonic harmonica. I came here to checkout how it varies with the wooden one, plus what those cool looking keys do and the range it covers.
Your description /demonstrations about the muscles in your face that you use to make a sound was super helpful! I picked my flute up after watching this and could get a really nice sound out of it (instead of the yuck sound I was getting - I'm a super beginner). Thank you!
I've always wanted to learn to play the flute, ever since I discovered Jethro Tull, some 30 years ago. I just bought a cheap flute and this video was first when I searched. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
I’m a Vocal/Choral Music Ed major in college, and I’m taking a woodwind tech class rn (and considering that it’s currently virtual, it’s not the easiest thing to do). I’ve literally never picked up a flute before in my life, and this video was SO helpful to get me started. Thank you so much!!
So I’ve played Saxophone for almost 5 years (started in 5th Grade) and I’ve been learning the Flute and this helped so much 🥳 thank you for helping me learn how to play another Instrument
JEEZE!!!! This helped. Lots of silliness and tomfoolery at the beginning. But the teaching parts are spot on. Advanced my basic note playing to solid sounds very quickly. Thank you so much for the tutorial.
I discovered this channel last year when I was first starting the violin i saw your switching instruments with my boyfriend video (because it came up for violin) since then I have loved your channel
yo i just wanted to say that im a producer/artist that wanted to toot my own flute for samples, but damn it, im joining the flutelyfe fam lmfao. thanks for providing value while being hilarious lol
I am a drummer who is into jazz. I'm trying to get away from tradition, meaning trumpet and sax. What I am researching is the combo of flute and clarinet. Would you consider doing a "performance" with a clarinetist (?) in a jazz context? Perhaps with a pianist (may be pushing it).
This was a great crash course and answered a lot of things I forgot over the years after buying a new flute recently. Played flute and oboe from 6th-8th grade (32 now) but was trying to remember the slower-faster airflow part about the octaves. Luckily I didn’t forget the lip positions and can still remember at least half or more of the fingerings and can still get clean sounds. Tonguing and articulation on flute is another thing I need to work on too that was explained well here. I was also an advanced saxophonist at one point, but decided on getting a flute again for apartment building noise levels. Thank you for this video!
Me: Needs to practice my concerto excerpt for solo and ensemble, symphony music, honor band music, and lesson preparation Also me: Plays clarinet and has never picked up a flute Me instead, organizing my priorities: Is here
I have crush on a boy who's in band and I decided to join band to get to kmow him better so I chose the flute but I know nothing about the flute! Luckily I found your videos. Thank you so much.
I'm a 28 year old dude, my wife's parents were cleaning out their house and her mom found her flute she played in high school. I asked to try it out, and she said I could keep it. I played some brass instruments, but it's been about 10 years, and I never played any woodwinds. I decided to give some fluting a try and this is the video I found, I was playing along by the end of it! Great tutorial, thank you! I'm excited to watch and play more, but I'm getting lightheaded lol.
This was the first flute video I watched, I have been playing the flute now since November 2021 and have loved everything about playing this lovely instrument ❤️💕💞
Thanks for this beginner video- I am 13years old and I love the pleasant, enchanting sound of flute. And I want to learn to play flute with all my heart. Love from INDIA. 😊 JAI SRI KRISHNA.
Hi Katie So glad I found your beginner tutorial. I’ve already gone from not being able to get a note out of my flute to getting a trill. Thank you so much it’s really been helpful!
Omg! Thank you so much! My teacher gave me Essential Elements flute book 1 and the embouchure description was horrible my entire mouth was on the embouchure plate. It was a hot mess. But thanks these tips were so helpful.
Thank you, I just bought a flute and am learning an instrument for the first time. The most helpful for me was understanding where my fingers go for each note.
I've been playing flute for almost 15 years and I watched this because you really inspire me but also because I wanted to see if there was anything new to learn!! I am excited to see new flutists in the world
I love your earrings!!! They're so pretty!!!! Also I love the stuff in you hair XD!!! I don't know what it is XD Also Jeremías nailed the flute parts, what are you talking about!? XD
thank you so much!! :) They are from Express! And the sparkley stuff in my hair is this type of hair tinsel, it's basically tied into my hair around like three strands of hair each if that makes sense hehe
Thank you for the lesson Katie, I struggled to gt a sound yesterday but coming across the video helped me a lot. I got my flute for Christmas but, it was a late gift.
So wonderful to see you again. !!! I play flute and piano; so I'm doing double duty !!! Its always good to review the basics even if you have been playing for years. THANK YOU !!!

Hey...i have just discovered your Channel and I love it !!! Since I’m a beginner (6 months), I have a wish: can you show us some etudes maybe concerts etc that are easy? Love from Germany
I played flute for six years but put it down five years ago for school/uni but after watching some flute videos I can’t wait to pick it up again! I miss it
whenever i see a flute related video, i get reminded of when I was learning the flute a few years back and one day i walked into class after picking up a few papers for a teacher (normal school class not my flute classes or whatever you think) and this guy had his mouth on my fcuking flute that I had put on my table like 3 minutes ago
I barely started the flute like 3 months ago. Every edit I make I will name a piece that I have learned. Edit 12/14/19: I am learning alla turca, I learned half of it. Wtf is a trill??
Just started learning on my own a couple of days ago and got frustrated with my inability to even make a sound consistently. This video is like magic! With this guidance, I'm already playing the left hand notes after an hour or so. Thank you!
Hi JoAnn!! Hmm that's a great question! I don't think I would have a drastically different approach to teaching someone who already plays another wind instrument- especially in regards to learning the flute embouchure/how to make a good sound, etc.but if I were teaching them privately I could see us moving more quickly through the process of learning the different note fingerings, and they would certainly have a head start with the whole breath control aspect!
im many MANY years behind everyone. i havent picked up an instrument in 4 years. i played clairinet even though i wanted flute, now im in highschool concert band and i forgot EVERYTHING in music SOS i cant read notes well but i know i will be visiting this video 1million times thank you so much
Long-time guitar player, decided (no idea why) to learn to play the Irish whistle, then the Irish flute. Of course, that led me to want a keyed flute! So, I buy a book to learn to play a keyed flute, and it tells me how to read music - oh, and sort of how to play an F and an E but I can't tell exactly what fingers go where - this flute has a lot more going on than the Irish flute does, I am lost! I can already read music. I needed to know how to put the flute together, how to hold it, what keys to press to get what notes. Grrr. I stumbled across this video and I'm sending the stupid book back. Thank you so much for really useful information -- I learned something today! Once I master today's lesson, I'll be back looking for more.
i just got my first flute for my 19th birthday after years of wanting to pick up an instrument but never quite committing, I'm really loving it so far and have moved to learning basic notes and scales! I'm loving music again and can't wait to keep progressing

My mom would kill me if I had soooo many lessons lol the most I have is violin, piano and now flute maybe voice in the future EE
I do have multiple instruments too like wooden transverse bamboo flute, ukulele, guitar, diatonic harmonica. I came here to checkout how it varies with the wooden one, plus what those cool looking keys do and the range it covers.
@@dineshkuanr3414 I believe it's much harder than a wooden flute
@@BrandonHortman You took the very words from my mouth brother. 😀
Thank you!
I play bass but looked for a video to help a friend’s kid and found this to be wonderful. Now I want to try playing the flute.
This is very helpful because I'm starting band and was scared I could not do it and because of this video I feel better thank you.
JEEZE!!!! This helped. Lots of silliness and tomfoolery at the beginning. But the teaching parts are spot on. Advanced my basic note playing to solid sounds very quickly. Thank you so much for the tutorial.
Video Idea:
10 Pieces you should play on flute!
Thank you so much! I am picking up the flute at 65!
@@mattclarktilevideo that’s awesome! Best of luck to you :)
I've been playing the flute for six years now but I still enjoy watching this type of videos. I think you're doing a great job!! ❤
I discovered this channel last year when I was first starting the violin i saw your switching instruments with my boyfriend video (because it came up for violin) since then I have loved your channel
i've been playing for 7 years but i still watched the whole video. now i want to go back and revisit all my beginner flute books lol
ive been playing for 2 days now
I got a new flute for school today i'm so exited to learn
I don't even play flute but love your videos as a break from my Clarinet. 🎶
same
As an adult beginner this was very helpful. Helps that you are so natural and friendly. Thank you Katie, best wishes from New Zealand.
yo i just wanted to say that im a producer/artist that wanted to toot my own flute for samples, but damn it, im joining the flutelyfe fam lmfao. thanks for providing value while being hilarious lol
I am an early adult beginner. I love that I can access your flute lessons. I learned several very helpful things today. Thank you Katie
It's so funny, you look like you're on the edge of bursting out in laughter at the beginning of the video 😂
My daughter started band this year. She chose the flute. This video has taught her way more than her band teacher. Thank you so much.
Me: Needs to practice my concerto excerpt for solo and ensemble, symphony music, honor band music, and lesson preparation
Also me: Plays clarinet and has never picked up a flute
Me instead, organizing my priorities: Is here
This was SOOOOOOO helpful. Thank you so much three years later ... still impacting new flute players :)
I'm not a flutist, I don't even play an instrument (yet), still watched and liked it
I have crush on a boy who's in band and I decided to join band to get to kmow him better so I chose the flute but I know nothing about the flute! Luckily I found your videos. Thank you so much.
I'm switching from Clarinet to Flute soon, so I'm sure this'll help (Along with school lessons ofc) ty
your music was really good well done
I'm a 28 year old dude, my wife's parents were cleaning out their house and her mom found her flute she played in high school. I asked to try it out, and she said I could keep it. I played some brass instruments, but it's been about 10 years, and I never played any woodwinds.
I decided to give some fluting a try and this is the video I found, I was playing along by the end of it! Great tutorial, thank you! I'm excited to watch and play more, but I'm getting lightheaded lol.
I love your pink aesthetic
This was the first flute video I watched, I have been playing the flute now since November 2021 and have loved everything about playing this lovely instrument ❤️💕💞
Hi I'm early lol also hi my cousin Gabby likes ur vids
Thanks for this beginner video- I am 13years old and I love the pleasant, enchanting sound of flute. And I want to learn to play flute with all my heart.
Love from INDIA. 😊
JAI SRI KRISHNA.
Can you make a video reviewing the piccolo please!!!
Hi Katie
So glad I found your beginner tutorial.
Yeah same but I need to learn the noted
Thank you, I just bought a flute and am learning an instrument for the first time. The most helpful for me was understanding where my fingers go for each note.
A flute is a refined vacuum cleaner
I dont know why though
I've been playing flute for almost 15 years and I watched this because you really inspire me but also because I wanted to see if there was anything new to learn!! I am excited to see new flutists in the world
I love your earrings!!! They're so pretty!!!! Also I love the stuff in you hair XD!!! I don't know what it is XD
Also Jeremías nailed the flute parts, what are you talking about!? XD
@xXAméri.OrianaXx the stuff in her hair is called fairy hair
I love it too! It’s so pretty!:)
@@anab1502 Thank you! :D
thank you so much!! :) They are from Express! And the sparkley stuff in my hair is this type of hair tinsel, it's basically tied into my hair around like three strands of hair each if that makes sense hehe
and you're right- Jeremías is a flute genius ;)
Thank you for the lesson Katie, I struggled to gt a sound yesterday but coming across the video helped me a lot. I got my flute for Christmas but, it was a late gift.
Who's here after RommieOfficial learned flute from Katie flute?
So wonderful to see you again. !!!
I play flute and piano; so I'm doing double duty !!! Its always good to review the basics even if you have been playing for years.
THANK YOU !!!
My mom forced me to do band and to switch to flute now she's mad im making to much noise so i will continue until she takes me out of band or unless i fail my grades because of band 😁
I bought a modern plastic flute recently with no idea how to play it and found this introduction to be most helpful, thank you!
Hey...i have just discovered your Channel and I love it !!! Since I’m a beginner (6 months), I have a wish: can you show us some etudes maybe concerts etc that are easy?
Love from Germany
I’m 3rd day LOL
It's my first year playing and I've been watching her videos it really helps.
You should try playing a Chinese Flute (Dizi or Xiao)
I played flute for six years but put it down five years ago for school/uni but after watching some flute videos I can’t wait to pick it up again! I miss it
Your eyebrows are like, perfect
True
whenever i see a flute related video, i get reminded of when I was learning the flute a few years back and one day i walked into class after picking up a few papers for a teacher (normal school class not my flute classes or whatever you think) and this guy had his mouth on my fcuking flute that I had put on my table like 3 minutes ago
I barely started the flute like 3 months ago. Every edit I make I will name a piece that I have learned.
Edit 12/14/19: I am learning alla turca, I learned half of it. Wtf is a trill??
good luck with it!
A trill is where it goes down a half step or up a half step, I havent trilled in awhile, and you go back to the original note very quickly.
Just started learning on my own a couple of days ago and got frustrated with my inability to even make a sound consistently. This video is like magic! With this guidance, I'm already playing the left hand notes after an hour or so. Thank you!
never thought that playing a flute was so complicated 🥴🥴🥴
Thank you so much for this video. It was so helpful. I have not yet played the flute, but am so interested in beginning to learn about to play.
I play guitar, bass, kinda harmonica, drums, piano, melodica and kazoo. Yet i'm here and apparently i got a new mom.
Am I flute starter? Yes! Just started at today! 9/7/21!
Is she helping me? Yes! She is!
Katie is awesome! Thanks for teaching me!
How would your "crash course" have changed if it was specifically for a doubler coming from a single reed instrument?
Hi JoAnn!! Hmm that's a great question! I don't think I would have a drastically different approach to teaching someone who already plays another wind instrument- especially in regards to learning the flute embouchure/how to make a good sound, etc.but if I were teaching them privately I could see us moving more quickly through the process of learning the different note fingerings, and they would certainly have a head start with the whole breath control aspect!
im many MANY years behind everyone. i havent picked up an instrument in 4 years. i played clairinet even though i wanted flute, now im in highschool concert band and i forgot EVERYTHING in music SOS
i cant read notes well but i know i will be visiting this video 1million times thank you so much
I love ur channel! Your so pretty and sound so beautiful!!❤️❤️
#flutelyfe
ive been playing clarinet for 5 years and ive been thinking about learning flute, this video was a huge help
i like to read name of your channel like katieflutie
Me: gonna learn the flute so i can play giorno theme
Also me: "wind blowing sounds"
Today I got my first flute and found your video. Really helpful. Thank you!
I don't use tounge when I'm supposed to because I can't do it, I'm trying rn but I'll get there someday.
How is it going now 8 months later?
DoctorFlute I can do it now!
@@daysecoolest Yay!
i just got my first flute for my 19th birthday after years of wanting to pick up an instrument but never quite committing, I'm really loving it so far and have moved to learning basic notes and scales! I'm loving music again and can't wait to keep progressing
why did i watch the entire video even if im playing the violin and have no plans to play the flute in the near future
loved the video though 🌸
Oop I stopped the violin and started the flute ahah now I’m doing both ish
I watched this video becoz I am a beginner and I have bought my flute today ........ thanks ma’am ....... all the best 👍👍👍
