Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder my mom and dad don't like me playing and I worked super hard to learn this song and they said to stop and that they didn't want to here! So I'm thinking of quitting this! What do you think I should do?

I agree. I've watched 2 other 1st lessons by 2 different people on RUclips and neither mentioned how to blow like Sarah does, just saying blow gently. And neither mentioned tongueing.

I played in our recorder band at school when I was 13 and still have those recorders but they are a bit knackered like me. I am now 71 and have bought a soprano and alto recorder and although I have forgotten lots about recorder playing I have really enjoyed this lesson. As they say practice makes perfect. Just hope I don't see lots of For Sale signs in my neighbours front gardens!!! You never truly forget but gosh don't you get rusty.
I can remember playing what we called a "flute-a-fone" in grade school sometime during the late 60's or early 70's! That began my interest in playing in the school band. I went on to play flute, piccolo and piano. I'm very grateful that we were taught the love of music thru such a simple, affordable yet pleasant sounding instrument in school! You play beautifully!
I haven't played recorder since I was in elementary school, but I found my old recorder and thought why not? Especially since I've gotten into DND and made a bard, time to learn how to play some folk music :D b
Thank you for posting this video. My daughter's old recorder was just sitting gathering dust when she decided to play the flute instead. Now I'm really enjoying playing the recorder again. It's helping me to cut down on a very bad smoking habit and to earn a bit of extra cash from busking occasionally.
Something I had a problem with when first learning recorder was playing low notes solidly - they would too easily break up, even when holes were covered properly. If this applies to you, the solution is to really relax your embouchure (facial muscles), also push your lips out slightly (watch Sarah). This relaxed feeling should be maintained throughout the range of the instrument. Feeling a cushion of air between lips and teeth is a good sign. Just my two-penn'orth...🙂 (Edit) I should add that relaxation in one area (embouchure) also aids relaxion in other areas: airstream and fingers. (Edit #2) I should have mentioned that I had in mind the Yamaha YRS302B soprano, their 'pro-level' plastic recorder. The low-note issue does not occur on recorders aimed at beginners. However, if you have a Yamaha 300-series recorder, and follow my advice, you will soon be playing with power, flexibility, expression and great tone!
I play violin and I found a plastic recorder we used in elementary school and went "oh this will be easy" and I think pinking up violin was easier than picking up the recorder somehow.
Taco Loco I’m doing the exact thing- I think recorder is harder at first because it’s not all in a scale where the higher up the string the higher the note. Violin is definitely harder with advanced technique and stuff
i play the piano, violin and saxophone. and I found a recorder in my cupboard, and I was like: why not give it a go? and as soon as she mentioned the tonguing I'm like: hahaha, I play saxophone, I already know how to do this stuff
I am now 36 years old and started to play the (alto) recorder just today. I come from 23 years of extreme metal and wanted to broaden my musical horizon and I think the recorder is really awesome. Your videos are great, you explain very good, you're reassuring, I like your notion of "just fiddle around, learn your instrument." That's what I tell my guitar students. But damn, that song for a first one is hard :D I nearly passed out after the first try.
What I’m learning from this the most is that my $8 recorder is not defective - I am blowing too hard and also my fingers are not covering the holes cleanly. I actually can get the right tones if I am deliberate about both my fingers and my breath, which is very exciting! Am definitely feeling it in my breathing muscles - this is a similar level of breath control as singing and flute playing, and I’d forgotten how much work it is to control the flow of the breath rather than just defaulting to maximum push. Thank you so much for this!!
Day two of watching this and I can play an actual song. I’m literally in tears. It’s been 30 years since I played an instrument and I didn’t realize how much I missed it until just now. Thank you for making this so accessible. ❤️

What a fun instrument! I can already do some cool things with tremolo that I cant achieve on any of my main instruments. If I'm being honest. I never even thought of playing the recorder until I found my grandpa's in the shed. I didn't know a thing about thing cause the only instrument I can and still play is the trumpet and I'm only the age of 13. You're very helpful with you're videos and I appreciate them. @~agatheflute~ I was wondering why it was written Ti here and not Si indeed (et moi aussi je suis français). I thought it might be to have a different initial for each note. And after checking, it appears my guess was correct. As written in the English version of wikipedia: "In Anglophone countries, "si" was changed to "ti" by Sarah Glover in the nineteenth century so that every syllable might begin with a different letter."

The recorder was the only instrument I learned and played when I was little. I haven't played in decades and have been meaning to continue learning what I started. Thank you for this Video Sarah. I’m so glad I was taught how to play the recorder at school. It has come in really handy in adult life. I lost count of the times I’ve resolved a difficult situation with a quick blast of three blind mice.
Sarah, this was lovely! I heard someone play a baroque piece on the recorder years ago and thought “someday.” Now my next door neighbor is an instrumental music teacher and she plays various instruments outside, including the recorder, while her kids are playing. So I got inspired, bought a recorder, and here I am! I play piano and trumpet, so I read music and the tonguing technique is similar to the trumpet, but I couldn’t figure my instruction book out! And here you are with a marvelous, adult lesson. THANK YOU!!!

I bought an Angel Soprano Recorder model PB6000 at a second hand store over a year ago. I always wanted to learn to play it. I'm so glad I found this video. It's perfect for multi instrumentalists like me and makes a giant leap in 15 minutes rather than learning "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Learning proper breath control, tongue technique, and finger position all together and encouraging getting to know the instrument without unreal goals is a perfect way to learn to love the instrument. And after an hour of practice, I was able to play the French song with you :). Can't believe it. I've never played a wind instrument before. I have played the piano for four years and love to sing. But I have been wanting to try something new for quite some time now. My brother was going through his drawers and found my recorder from third grade. I picked it up and decided to play. That beginners song is the same from third grade! It was nice to play again and you made it so easy and fun! A new hobby for sure!

Great to see an English video with romance note names and not just C, D, E, etc. Just picked up my first recorder and can read notes, but it helps not to have to think about which note is mentioned. Thanks! Can't wait for the next video!
Arcane1985 I don't know a lot about music. So I've not heard do re mi fa sol etc. referred to as romance notes. I know them as solfege. Which countries use the term romance notes?
MsBettyR. I meant in romance language countries (and Flanders in my case). I wasn't aware they were called solfege in English as I think it means something else in Dutch.
I've always had a recorder, just cheap ones, and played one around the 3rd grade. I never took it as a serious instrument, that is, until now, hearing you play! I have 2 very cheap ones around $5 each, then one that is a bit more, maybe $12. Due to your videos I ordered the set of 6 Woodi's. They came in yesterday, and I really love them. The company also gave me 2 ocarinas which was unexpected, I guess a bonus for me ordering from them. I own and play 225 instruments, and a violin maker. Now I have 232 instruments! Hearing you play is shocking! You make it sound great. I will be watching ALL of your videos to learn from! You make the instrument VERY respectful to play. Thanks for the vids, you are the master at it!!! THUMBS UP!!!

this super helpful! In elementary school, we were required to play the recorder in music class. I wasn't very good at all but I found my old recorder when I was going through my old things. I've been practicing along with this video for almost 2 hours and I'm actually getting the hang of it! it's really fun because I can actually *do it*
When I heard the music teacher say all students who are interested can purchase a recorder for $5 . I was thinking it was one of them boxes that U press 2 buttons play and record. My older sister got one for Christmas and some reason I always wanted one even though I didn't sound like the recorder made me sound lol yall feel me, and the disappointment of the stick that I bought that I am NOW so infatuated with I have no more desire to clean, cook,or organize after I found what I thought was a bad excuse for a sissy fied toy, that was the way I felt about them back in the day. Now I make them.lol
I played alto saxophone for 6 years of my life. I hadn’t picked up my instrument in over 20 years. I learned this in 15 minutes.👍🏾 This is easy as 6th grade band. Thank you!
This is great lesson. I failed my grade 1 recorder at aged 7 but just managed to play La Cavatina by aged 9 on the tenor recorder (which I preferred to the descant / soprano). My son has just come home with a very weird powerpoint to follow. This makes so more sense to me to to help him. (Given we are using this for 'home schooling')

After 36 years of not being able to play my flute or recorder I now have a one-handed adapted treble that I am learning to play and loving it. Sarah's tips and guidance are so good ...even for one hand. Just need to learn to coordinate fingers, holes and keys again, Thanks Sarah.
i started playing recorder again about 6 months ago after being away for 30-odd years, and discovering this channel was one of the best things ever!! i'm such a fan - really appreciating instruction that's not aimed at kids :) i have a question that i hope someone can help me with... and that this isn't the rudest place to ask it (sorry for my bad manners if it is!!) - my weakest technical point is SLURRING. even with loads (and loads) of daily practice, it still sounds kinda mushy... not at all smooth, and i'm wondering what i can do to improve?? any help would make you the hero of my week (as if you needed further incentive to help out a fellow recorder player!!)
I found that being careful of blips helped my slurs sound better. I know I have seen Sara talk about blips a ton, but I'm not sure if she has a dedicated video on it. (or even on slurs...) Slurs are.... legato? I'm not good with this music speak. Lol! Basically your fingers need to move all at once in unison. I *believe* it was her video on how to play fast that was the most helpful for me and my blipping issues.

Finally going to learn to play an instrument that suits me. Tried guitar but lack dexterity. Same for piano. Brass is too loud. I need a wind instrument like the recorder. Today when I was at school in music class we were talking about woodwind instruments and one of them was a recorder. At first I ever really cared about the recorder, but when I heard it for the first time, I fell in love!

I just recently started using my recorder(soprano) again, which I haven’t touched since elementary school. Now in high school, I decided to try it out again, and it’s still pretty fun to play here and there.
I learnt to play the viola. I was in the Kingsdale school orchestra. My only problem is I have music note dyslexia. My teacher used to just write the notes for me is how I coped. Also did it myself using a book explaining it. I will start on recorders soon as I can afford one. The Mandolorian got me interested. Such a cool sound.
So I just got mine. I play several other instruments but it’s my first time on a recorder and I have to say: The piano makes me cry The ukulele makes me smile But the recorder makes me LAUGH I almost don’t want to get good at it so I can keep laughing

1:04 - This is so true guys and gals! Once you find your particular genre(s), you'll want to stay with it. It's not just your elementary school kid's (Hot Cross Buns) instrument anymore. Once you become proficient with the recorder, you’ll want to proceed to other treble clef wind instruments, such as the Irish tin whistle, concert flute, Bb clarinet and alto saxophone et al (if you haven’t already). I know I have. 😉 🎼 ♫

I am glad I found your tutorial first. I picked up an alto recorder to try to learn while I was my dad's care giver, but due to circumstances, I never got around to learning. Recently I have wanted to get back into my hobbies, and thought I would look up recorder lessons on youtube. It reminds me of when I learned to play the coronet/trumpet when I was young. By the way Sarah, are there any paticular instruments that you consider to be complimentary to the Recorder? And if so which ones as I would like to move onto and learn instruments that would be complimentary to my recorder.
Samuel Kron Not Sarah, but the Recorder was most popular during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and the Alto Recorder was popular during the Baroque era. An easy way to pair up Instruments would be to use instruments of those time periods. For example if you are playing a Soprano Recorder a Harpsichord, Shawm, or Dulcian could easily fit. A piano could be more appropriate for an Alto since it was made in the middle of the Baroque, though the Harpsichord was still used. Any member of the violin family also goes great with them. I guess an Ocarina or Gemshorn could be interesting picks. I guess it kind of boils down to your budget, what’s available to you, and whether or not you care about historical accuracy though, good hunting :)
@@danadrian2752 Actually, fortepiano was developed from the clavichord during the late baroque period and played by grown-up Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. The modern piano(forte) was developed in the 19th century.
I know that this is an older video, but I hope someone sees this. Like most kids in the US of my age when I was 9 or 10 I had a instrument called a "Tonette" that was a soprano recorder -- sort of... It got me by musically until I got my trombone. Back on topic, I just got my first real recorder, a Yamaha Alto and I like it but after my first session with it my right hand is killing me. All the books and this video says that the hands should be relaxed. But how do you relax them when the middle fingers on your right hand are about an inch too long to rest comfortably on their assigned holes? Is there a place where I can get additional joints surgically inserted into my fingers, or should I just say to heck with it and try a larger member of the family, like a Tenor. Any advice, tips or medical second opinions more than welcome... Mike...
I have this problem with my thumbs. I want to know a solution, too! For me I used Sarah's tips on how to stretch for the big instruments, although the stretch isn't a problem for me. Her tips with start slow, play for 5 minutes a day and gradually increase it, did wonders for my relaxation while playing it. My thumbs are still way too long and it's annoying, but playing for very short amounts of time did alleviate the majority of the issues and soreness that I had. Then again I think she has talked about adjusting for your specific needs in a video. Can't remember which one. Also warming up my hands before playing helped.
Fill in the hole, and drill a hole that lines up with your long finger. Just make sure that new hole is vertically in the same place as the original, and DO NOT do this on expensive flutes.
Bought my recorder a few weeks back, I've managed a few owl and frantic birdy sounds -- must try harder, and Sarah is fun to watch, i will practice constantly now.

I am glad that Sarah said there is no substitute for learning than just by playing it. The mistake that I observed in a competitor's lessons is that the lessons felt like work instead of like fun, and if you are not having fun, from Day One, then you won't stick with it. You have to keep in mind, too, that the most successful musicians in pop music never learned to read music. Most improvise and play by ear and do so in a self-taught manner.

Am definitely feeling it in my breathing muscles - this is a similar level of breath control as singing and flute playing, and I’d forgotten how much work it is to control the flow of the breath rather than just defaulting to maximum push. If I'm being honest. I never even thought of playing the recorder until I found my grandpa's in the shed. I didn't know a thing about thing cause the only instrument I can and still play is the trumpet and I'm only the age of 13. You're very helpful with you're videos and I appreciate them. Thank you for you're useful information and I hope I will be able to be guided along the way to become a recorder player as well. Also this is a new challenge for me and I LOVE CHALLENGES!!! And after checking, it appears my guess was correct. As written in the English version of wikipedia: "In Anglophone countries, "si" was changed to "ti" by Sarah Glover in the nineteenth century so that every syllable might begin with a different letter."

I heard someone play a baroque piece on the recorder years ago and thought “someday.” Now my next door neighbor is an instrumental music teacher and she plays various instruments outside, including the recorder, while her kids are playing. So I got inspired, bought a recorder, and here I am! I play piano and trumpet, so I read music and the tonguing technique is similar to the trumpet, but I couldn’t figure my instruction book out! And here you are with a marvelous, adult lesson. THANK YOU!!!

I bought an Angel Soprano Recorder model PB6000 at a second hand store over a year ago. I always wanted to learn to play it. I'm so glad I found this video. It's perfect for multi instrumentalists like me and makes a giant leap in 15 minutes rather than learning "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Learning proper breath control, tongue technique, and finger position all together and encouraging getting to know the instrument without unreal goals is a perfect way to learn to love the instrument. I have played the piano for four years and love to sing. But I have been wanting to try something new for quite some time now. My brother was going through his drawers and found my recorder from third grade. I picked it up and decided to play. That beginners song is the same from third grade! It was nice to play again and you made it so easy and fun! A new hobby for sure!

Arcane1985 I don't know a lot about music. So I've not heard do re mi fa sol etc. referred to as romance notes. I know them as solfege. Which countries use the term romance notes?
MsBettyR. I meant in romance language countries (and Flanders in my case). I wasn't aware they were called solfege in English as I think it means something else in Dutch.
They're called solfége or solfeggio.

I've always had a recorder, just cheap ones, and played one around the 3rd grade. I never took it as a serious instrument, that is, until now, hearing you play! I have 2 very cheap ones around $5 each, then one that is a bit more, maybe $12. Due to your videos I ordered the set of 6 Woodi's. They came in yesterday, and I really love them. The company also gave me 2 ocarinas which was unexpected, I guess a bonus for me ordering from them. I own and play 225 instruments, and a violin maker. Now I have 232 instruments! Hearing you play is shocking! You make it sound great. I will be watching ALL of your videos to learn from! You make the instrument VERY respectful to play. Thanks for the vids, you are the master at it!!! THUMBS UP!!!

My older sister got one for Christmas and some reason I always wanted one even though I didn't sound like the recorder made me sound lol yall feel me, and the disappointment of the stick that I bought that I am NOW so infatuated with I have no more desire to clean, cook,or organize after I found what I thought was a bad excuse for a sissy fied toy, that was the way I felt about them back in the day. This is great lesson. I failed my grade 1 recorder at aged 7 but just managed to play La Cavatina by aged 9 on the tenor recorder (which I preferred to the descant / soprano). My son has just come home with a very weird powerpoint to follow. This makes so more sense to me to to help him. (Given we are using this for 'home schooling')

After 36 years of not being able to play my flute or recorder I now have a one-handed adapted treble that I am learning to play and loving it. Sarah's tips and guidance are so good ...even for one hand. Just need to learn to coordinate fingers, holes and keys again, Thanks Sarah.

i started playing recorder again about 6 months ago after being away for 30-odd years, and discovering this channel was one of the best things ever!! i'm such a fan - really appreciating instruction that's not aimed at kids :) i have a question that i hope someone can help me with... and that this isn't the rudest place to ask it (sorry for my bad manners if it is!!) - my weakest technical point is SLURRING. even with loads (and loads) of daily practice, it still sounds kinda mushy... not at all smooth, and i'm wondering what i can do to improve?? any help would make you the hero of my week (as if you needed further incentive to help out a fellow recorder player!!)
I found that being careful of blips helped my slurs sound better. I know I have seen Sara talk about blips a ton, but I'm not sure if she has a dedicated video on it. (or even on slurs...) Slurs are.... legato? I'm not good with this music speak. Lol! Basically your fingers need to move all at once in unison. I *believe* it was her video on how to play fast that was the most helpful for me and my blipping issues.

Finally going to learn to play an instrument that suits me. Tried guitar but lack dexterity. Same for piano. Brass is too loud. I need a wind instrument like the recorder. I just recently started using my recorder(soprano) again, which I haven’t touched since elementary school. Now in high school, I decided to try it out again, and it’s still pretty fun to play here and there.
I learnt to play the viola. I was in the Kingsdale school orchestra. My only problem is I have music note dyslexia. My teacher used to just write the notes for me is how I coped. Also did it myself using a book explaining it. I will start on recorders soon as I can afford one. The Mandolorian got me interested. Such a cool sound.

1:04 - This is so true guys and gals! Once you find your particular genre(s), you'll want to stay with it. It's not just your elementary school kid's (Hot Cross Buns) instrument anymore. Once you become proficient with the recorder, you’ll want to proceed to other treble clef wind instruments, such as the Irish tin whistle, concert flute, Bb clarinet and alto saxophone et al (if you haven’t already). I know I have. 😉 🎼 ♫

I am glad I found your tutorial first. I picked up an alto recorder to try to learn while I was my dad's care giver, but due to circumstances, I never got around to learning. Recently I have wanted to get back into my hobbies, and thought I would look up recorder lessons on youtube. It reminds me of when I learned to play the coronet/trumpet when I was young. Thanks for making these videos 😄
By the way Sarah, are there any paticular instruments that you consider to be complimentary to the Recorder? And if so which ones as I would like to move onto and learn instruments that would be complimentary to my recorder.
Samuel Kron Not Sarah, but the Recorder was most popular during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and the Alto Recorder was popular during the Baroque era. An easy way to pair up Instruments would be to use instruments of those time periods. For example if you are playing a Soprano Recorder a Harpsichord, Shawm, or Dulcian could easily fit. A piano could be more appropriate for an Alto since it was made in the middle of the Baroque, though the Harpsichord was still used. Any member of the violin family also goes great with them. I guess an Ocarina or Gemshorn could be interesting picks. I guess it kind of boils down to your budget, what’s available to you, and whether or not you care about historical accuracy though, good hunting :)

@@danadrian2752 Actually, fortepiano was developed from the clavichord during the late baroque period and played by grown-up Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. The modern piano(forte) was developed in the 19th century.

I know that this is an older video, but I hope someone sees this. Like most kids in the US of my age when I was 9 or 10 I had a instrument called a "Tonette" that was a soprano recorder -- sort of... It got me by musically until I got my trombone. Back on topic, I just got my first real recorder, a Yamaha Alto and I like it but after my first session with it my right hand is killing me. All the books and this video says that the hands should be relaxed. But how do you relax them when the middle fingers on your right hand are about an inch too long to rest comfortably on their assigned holes?
Is there a place where I can get additional joints surgically inserted into my fingers, or should I just say to heck with it and try a larger member of the family, like a Tenor.
Any advice, tips or medical second opinions more than welcome...

I have this problem with my thumbs. I want to know a solution, too! For me I used Sarah's tips on how to stretch for the big instruments, although the stretch isn't a problem for me. Her tips with start slow, play for 5 minutes a day and gradually increase it, did wonders for my relaxation while playing it. My thumbs are still way too long and it's annoying, but playing for very short amounts of time did alleviate the majority of the issues and soreness that I had. Then again I think she has talked about adjusting for your specific needs in a video. Can't remember which one. Also warming up my hands before playing helped.
Fill in the hole, and drill a hole that lines up with your long finger.
Just make sure that new hole is vertically in the same place as the original,
and DO NOT do this on expensive flutes.

I am glad that Sarah said there is no substitute for learning than just by playing it. The mistake that I observed in a competitor's lessons is that the lessons felt like work instead of like fun, and if you are not having fun, from Day One, then you won't stick with it. You have to keep in mind, too, that the most successful musicians in pop music never learned to read music. Most improvise and play by ear and do so in a self-taught manner.
