Its time to LS Swap my Jeep Wrangler!!!
This is going to be a somewhat long process, and i dont want to cover every single step of the process, however ALL of the main important steps will be covered in these videos.
To start off, we have to make sure our "Junkyard" engine is in good shape!!
In this video, we are checking out the engine to see if we are in store for a full rebuild or if this 5.3 LM7 will hold strong to the LS legend!
    Products used in this Video:
ICT Billet Valley Cover Knock Sensor Delete: www.ictbillet.... : ICT Billet makes a ton of really cool products for LS based engines, as well as other products that are very helpful when doing a V8 swap in any vehicle.
ICT Also has a helpful LS Swap guide that goes over basic LS info, along with wiring pin-outs and torque specs!
    Chemical Guys Degreaser Concentrate: amzn.to/2Rin529
Full Gasket Set For 5.3 LM7: amzn.to/3bX69rh (Currently Out of Stock)
Full Gasket Set, (Other option): amzn.to/32pPCcs
    Engine Stand: amzn.to/2GWGCTN
    Engine Hoist: www.harborfrei...
Cheap Exhaust Headers: amzn.to/3bUw8jm *We still have to make sure these will fit with the Wrangler swap engine mounts*
    ARP Exhaust Header Bolts: amzn.to/33hjOW8
ARP Assembly Torque Lubricant for precise Torque Values: amzn.to/3hlJrdr
Back to what i was saying... We started out by removing the front accessories (Alternator, AC, Power steering pump, water pump etc). Then we removed all of the old wiring harness which was cut in half during the previous owners removal. I will say, if you can buy an engine/trans combo with a full wiring harness and ECM then it can help with pricing in the end. Personally, id rather use a new harness..
    For a few reasons;
-We know the wiring is good and not brittle.
-An aftermarket harness only comes with what we need.. No need to sort through the factory wiring to clean up un-needed wires.
-Aftermarket harnesses can be found for pretty cheap, and allows us to buy a new ECM that is already programmed with certain features (More on this in future videos).
With the wiring harness off, we were able to pressure wash and clean up the engine. After that, it was time to open up the LS engine and inspect it.
Everything looked good, just some carbon build up over time!!
This means we dont have to do a rebuild... Sure we could, but the LS engines are made of magic... and if possible, leave the OEM parts inside the engine, they are made of some type of diamond forged metal made by a wizard himself (Apparantly)...
Now, i know i didnt talk too much about the engine and the entire goal of the project...
There are just so many choices of engines to choose from. If your looking to do a V8 swap in your Jeep Wrangler TJ, YJ, LJ, CJ, or any of the older Wranglers, then the Gen 3 5.3 LM7 is a great option.
These engines are everywhere, and are usually pretty cheap.
These engines usually come with a 4L60E, which is a 4 speed auto trans. Should be strong enough to hold up well in a lightweight 2 door jeep.
Remember that technically you have to swap in a newer Engine... So if you have a 2005 jeep, you need to swap in a 2005 or newer V8. Depending on your State and laws you might have issues if swapping an older engine (2002 5.3 into a 2004 TJ, etc)
The goal is to keep this swap budget friendly, while still making sure it gets done right!!!
Thanks for watching! If you have any tips on LS Swaps, or V8s in general press let me know in the comments!
And for my "Jeep Fam" as Ben Said... Dont worry, i have more "Jeep" videos coming soon!!! The 4.0 in the Wrangler is not coming out yet, so that means more upgrades, mods, and wheeling in the next videos!!

Here are some good inexpensive head gaskets, RpmspeedHG01 from ws6store. $52.00 a pair for MLS. Also I would like to suggest a BTR 30202111R1 camshaft for added torque everywhere, ls6 valve springs. And make sure that you change the O ring on the oil pump pickup for peace of mind.

Just stumbled on your channel! I love it when a gal is not afraid of getting grease and grime under her nails!!! I've got 2 adult daughters and I "taught" them to do their own maintenance, changing tires, oil, filters, simple stuff. Tried to teach them how to "listen" to their vehicle to diagnose WHERE the "noise" is coming from and to ID the TYPE of noise. The best thing a Dad can do is to teach his kids-both male AND especially female-at least the basics so they won't get ripped off at the mechanics.

I have built a 4.7 stroke for my ‘88 YJ. I have it bolted in My Jeep but haven’t started. After watching your LS install I’ve purchased a ‘08 LS and 4L60 engine and trans complete with harness and accessories. I’m in the process of pulling the 4.7 stroker and getting started. Thank you for great video series on the install.

I have 2 TJ's with 5.9L Dodge Magnum motors and have have no problems related to the swap. One I did 10yrs ago and it's still doing good. I have a friend with a LJ LS swap and he has had many issues with the compatibility. Now he is asking me to get his AC operating. I know LS has more POWER but I can 4-wheel in the Colorado Rockies in high range. I built a couple other 5.9L swaps and sold them and no complaints from the buyers. Cost to do the swap is about 1/3rd the price too. Cost to me for each including motor was $1500. Oh BTW the picture buy my name here it the first one I built and still driving it.

That 5.3 is clean! Since you plan on doing a cam upgrade, might as well address parts of the valvetrain and freshen those up. The trunion upgrade from Comp Cams is a solid investment and some new valve springs would also be a good decision. The LS6 springs are a fine replacement unless the budget allows for something higher end. The LS2 timing chain and dampener along with some LS7 lifters are other suitable OEM upgrades since the engine is disassembled. As far as cam upgrade, I'd suggest one of the truck cams from Brian Tooley. I've personally run Brian's stuff before and have been pleased. Also having the heads ported and polished, if the budget permits, will certainly complement the cam upgrade.

I know this video is kinda old, but before you put a engine on a stand,. If to pull the engine bolt up part off the engine stand, you can put grease around pipe are better yet a grease fitting on the bottom side to grease the pipe at any time that will be spinning as you turn the engine over. Also replace the short handle with a 2' black steal water pipe and caps. This will make a world of difference.

Sweet build! Just finished an LM7 on my TJ! $300 didn’t change anything has 1,000 miles on it with no issues other than Camaros and the occasional Vette trying to race me at take off! Kept the 5 speed Jeep nv3550 for mine. Also 2014 camaro ss headers clears the novak mounts great and dumped fine if your okay with the 2.5 exhaust going under the oil pan like it does in the 4L but driveshaft is a little close.

Don't forget to change the o-ring on the oil pickup. They are notorious for getting hard and brittle around the 120k mile mark. Easily over looked but it will let you down and oil pressure will drop or dissapear entirely.

I did this same swap with a 99TJ 3 years ago.. The stock truck oil pan fits, but swap it. My jeep is lifted on 37's and the first time out wheeling with the 5.3 I smacked the oil pan on a rock and busted it. Definitely swap it with an oil pan that has more clearance.

You might want to mention removing spark plugs to make turning the engine over with a socket easier when checking for rotation. Also condition of the plugs another thing to look at when checking over used engines. Tells a story about what's going on in the combustion chamber.

If you will have Cassie lift a little weight at the harmonic balancer you can rotate the engine much easier. Also put a little grease on the stem in front of the bar.

Still need the assembly lube for the rod cap you removed and the cam journals/lobes rocker arms etc. If you're Gunna strip it down that far might as well spend the extra money get it decked, honed and swap out pistons/rings/rods etc. Save money in the long run. Budget friendly versus keeping it for 20 years. Great content.

It will be interesting to see if you too will have issues cooling the big LS. In my case the SB2 won't stay cool. A 2 4 inch core radiator, a high flow pump, a 2600 cfm fan with a shroud,15% anti freeze fixture with water wetter just barely keep it cool when I am puttering around town. But when I hit the highway to climbs to 220 degrees or higher depending on whether I hit a mountain grade, good luck keeping it cool!

    I did a modified 05 Lm7 5.3 in my 01 XJ.
Bored. 30 over, Hypereutectic Speed Pro flat top pistons, Molly rings, micropolished crank, roller cam, full floating rods, 862 truck heads ported with oversized fuel injectors and MLS head gaskets, Ls7 lifters, ported oil pan passages.... then I relocated the battery to the back to make room for a side mount supercharger.
You can really pour the coals to those 5.3s with the strong cast iron blocks.
Congrats on your build, it will be a little ripper for sure! 😎

My wife had a 2003 Trail Blazer with the 5.3 L engine and we had the same issue with debris piled up in the valley. In our case about a half inch of sand from taking it on the beach in Carova, NC one week. There is only a piece of foam to keep stuff out of there which eventually perishes. I think the fan helps push stuff in there. The knock sensors eventually get corroded and stop working. The other problem for that truck was the throttle body transitioned that year to drive by wire, however GM did not redesign the throttle body housing and there was a void that causes a high pitch harmonic right from the factory. They did nothing to fix it, and there was simply no aftermarket fix that I could find. Good luck with it though.

I'm a pretty big LS guys I've built several 1000+hp LS motors. Since it sounds like most of this will just be for reliability and not exactly racing my suggestions would be: LS7 lifters, a single piece timing dampener, BTR platinum springs for the cam your putting in these are second to none for basic cam builds, and maybe a set of 243 heads which can be found relatively cheap now days. Also since it's a trail vehicle keep a truck intake as they make more low end torque .

Impressed that you can break the engine down and have the confidence to just put the bolts in a bag... I get cardboard and draw a “template” for each section and place the bolts in the template so I can make sure to get them back where they go... nothing like getting something back together and having leftover parts 😅

Use quality head studs like ARP if you ever plan on boosting the motor.

Super easy to replace head studs at a later date. But I'm pretty sure they were joking about the twin turbos. 😉

I had 1 problem with those brand gaskets on a GM 3.4L, the intake gasket guide pin was too big. Had to get those local but, I did get a partial refund. Everything else in the box worked without problems.

Since you have the the engine on a stand, you can pressure wash the engine without crap getting inside if you take the valve covers off first and loosen the valve train to close the valves.

I hope you send those heads out get some new valve guides And maybe get the runners lightly cleaned up I would also add a better camshaft It would really wake the 5.3ltr up.

Don't use those head bolts use arp yes the arp are slot more expensive but worth it just used amazon bolts the same kit you have 500 miles later had to change head bolts they kept stretching causing coolant to get into number 2 cylinder

Bearings might have looked good but since you had a tore down that far I would have just put new rod and main bearings in it that's why you have no doubt especially for the price you couldn't go wrong

Great video and you guys are doing an excellent job... since the Engine is unassembled you should changes the oil pump, make sure that the valve train is in optimal condition, as well as the rocket arm, spring, valve, the pushrod, the tappet, water pump, timing chain, the water seal... those are area a real headache if you have to change it later on.

that carbon is actually the result of ethanol . yay emission standards !!! To avoid that in the future, once a year pour a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the gas. It will raise the combustion chamber temp alittle and help burn that off. Dont do it to often. On a side note.....that trick also works if your car wont pass a smog check
