Even the MG4 can be fully charged from zero to 100% in just over 13 hours via a normal domestic wall-socket - so there was no reason not to top up the MG4 slowly and safely and cheaply back to 100% in the driveway at his friend's house. Our media loves to try to persuade everyone to buy and use wall-boxes - but that majority of drivers with driveways who drive well under 50 miles a day on well over 300 days of the year can easily manage without them - even more so if they can also top up at the work-place(usually for free). So don't buy a wall-box unless or until you really feel you need one - despite our media's constant collective-coercive attempts to persuade us not to simply plug into a wall-socket and top up overnight ! Didn't take your granny charger so you could have just used a standard plug overnight to put some into the battery? Amazing the ferry has charging which is great. Like to see you do a Atto 3 on a longer journey as I find the headrest like you found the seat sort of uncomfortable as it isn't adjustable and pushes in abit right at the shoulder level on my spine which is abit disconcerting along with the fact it has nowhere to put my left foot flat on the floor only the foot rest which is at the wrong angle unlike my classic Ioniq which there is space to put my foot next to the brake pedal flat on the floor.
Hi Tassie, yes I've had lots of comments from Atto owners about uncomfortable headrest. Let's hope they make some changes with next model. With regards Ferry charging, be aware most use energy generated with very emissions intensive dirty fuels. Some of the larger ferries even bunker fuel the worst of all. Just a quick update, collected the car today, does indeed have the rear wiper/rear headrest, but also a big plus for me is that they did add in one pedal driving 😅😅 I am so used to this from the Leaf
Very interesting account of your journey. I have an MG5 with the same battery as your review car. I get over 220 miles on long journeys in summer and about 190 miles in the winter, even allowing for aircon / heaters. I don’t charge the battery above 20% and plan my journeys to give me charging options at that range. I noticed you ‘topping up’ your battery throughout the trip. What impact will this have on degradation long term? The manuals all go on about battery management, do you think topping up could have an impact on degradation and re-slake value? I do manage my car battery very carefully and log date, miles, % at start and % at end of charging whether at home or public chargers, KWh input and cost, it only takes me about 10 seconds to write this down in a log book I keep in the car. I am doing this so that I can maximise the battery longevity for the next person who may own my car, I want to be able to demonstrate good battery management. So when are you going to review the Cyberster ? …. I’ll look forward to that one ! Thanks for the great review :)
For a regular owner little DC charging is best for battery health. I wouldn't run mine like that if I owned it. Sounds like you've a great system. Not everyone will be as lucky with their 2nd hand EV experience. Battery health reports and passports will have to take more of a main role
I hope Apple Car connection is reliable. Several other car reviewers have found Android Auto drops out on other cars too. Is it because car companies have to program for lots of different versions or is car connectivity to smart phone generally is buggy?
Some of the motorway charge points are ridiculously priced. I also think ABRP should do a bit better at choosing cheaper chargers. :) There are plenty of cheaper charge points not far off the beaten track.
Thanks for the comments all. Agree with all of them. Good data is needed and it's still all very early days. Pricing should be as visible as the dead dinosaur juice.
Apart from the BP stop, at least it was mostly hassle free to get a charger. I don't think people mind paying a premium now and again for good charging speeds and convenience.
"faffing with bp pulse"... I used BP pulse 3 times, never get more than 20kwh speed. Most memorable was visit bp pulse charger in London-somewhere in deep basement full of dusty cars, picture like from old horror movie. Charging speed 15kwh, setup and connect took about 20min...oh boy... Now we ordered new car with motability and you can guess what network discount we get... BP pulse of course! So its membership with couple penies discount on slowest, max 2 stalls per place network. Its more mockery than some real help...
BEWARE MG4 long range Excite (Irish model) DOES NOT have long range 3-phase charging (Uk version does have 3-phase) Irish model only has 1-phase 6kW charging meaning that unless your workplace has a super fast CCS charger (they won’t) you will be looking at at least 10hours to get from 10 to 80% charge. You might get as little as 2kWhrs at an 11kW 3-phase charger!!!! A trickle charge ……Irish dealership won’t tell you this !!!
As are motorway petrol and diesel prices. No-one in their right minds fill up at the services unless they can avoid it, or I certainly didn't when I last had an ICE car (2015). Same for EVs (we have two, Renault Zoe and MG4 Trophy), charged off solar and home battery to 100% before starting journey, then topping up where necessary at cheapest available public charger usually just off the motorway, if or when needed. Yes charging costs are way too high, but they are on the way down now as energy prices are reducing.
To be honest I thought it a little selfish of you taking up a charging place on the ferry when your car was at 92% battery someone else might have needed it more, seeing as there is limited chargers,my opinion
Thanks for the comment Sean. Fair point. Only 2 if the 4 were in use and if someone has asked me to move I would have no problem. It's all booked in advance and I wanted a full battery departing with such a long journey on the other side
The Android Auto can be fussy about cables, although an Anker should be fine. You do have to have your phone unlocked for Android Auto to start - could that have been the issue? On driver assist, if you engage Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) instead of regular cruise control, that actually keeps you centred in the lane, so effectively steers for you on the motorway The M6 toll prices are ridiculous, it's always worth checking the traffic conditions through the West Midlands. If the M6 is jammed up from J11-J4 then it is worth paying to avoid, otherwise it's a handy cash saving if you don't use the toll road
Yet again ppl charging their non LFP/LMFP batteries to more then 80%. Not recommended on a regular basis - what does that really mean? If the car is discharged to a maximum, why does nobody tell you what the charging times are?? Spoiler alert, whatever the 80/10 time is for the fast or superfast charger you are using, double it, so in terms of time management, it's a daft idea whilst on the journey. 75p/Kwh is outrageous. At 3.4 mi/Kwh, that's 22p/mile. My Mazda 2 D on motorways at 75 mph is 71 mpg, ie 9.3p/mile and I'll go 1100km on one tank, ie there and back. Diesel rules.
75p per kWh is crazy I agree. My Tesla charges at around 40p or less and does 4 mi/kWh if I take it easy so around 10p/mile from a Supercharger. If I charge from home it is a quarter of that price so less than 2.5p per mile. My last three Turbo Diesels would never do more than 55mpg on a trip and all three engines broke down under my ownership. Diesels are smelly dirty dinosaurs.
Whatever happened to that much-hyped multiple MG4 road-trip from the UK to the World Cup in Qatar? Abandoned? Achieved? Did anyone care either way? Paul G
Hi Derek......it's your friendly EV sceptic again. Not a very economical way to traval at all. I could be wrong but you seem to be charging around every 150kms and that is costing between 16 to 18 GBP.........that's about €20 yoyos for 150kms. €20 at current Diesel prices will get me about 250kms in my lovely, big, comfortable Skoda. No thanks.............they have a long way to go yet. Urban driving with home charging is all they are fit for........no matter which way you sugar coat it.
Shocking costs for out of home charging. Big hold back for EV is destination charging, it will improve but right now? Diesel for the long journey and a small range EV for day to day seem the best set up.
"Not a very economical way to traval at all... €20 at current Diesel prices will get me about 250kms". Can be. Traveled 3,500km from Ireland to Poznan & back last year in a Model 3, public charging costs amounted to €238.78, which is about €50 less than what your Skoda'd cost.
@@ThomasMcGuire my Skoda could do that journey with only 3 fuel ⛽ stops....if needed......at about 10mins each (including toilet stop and take away coffee)......I also wouldn't have to hog a lane of the carraige way at 100kmh, petrified that I will over use my battery 🔋. You cannot win the long distance travel argument. You just can't.
Man, your electricity costs are really high. In Australia, even using a Tesla supercharger it’s AUD$0.60/kWh, or about £0.32/kWh. Less than half your pricing.

Average 60mph to 65mph on the motorway. Apologies, I should have listed it
@@NevoEVReviewIrelandThanks Derek!
I live in crewe (first stop) everything is expensive 😂
I think so. Thanks for the comment
Some of the motorway charge points are ridiculously priced. I also think ABRP should do a bit better at choosing cheaper chargers. :)
There are plenty of cheaper charge points not far off the beaten track.
Yeah, ABRP's great at what it does with what it knows, but what it knows is limited.
You can set it to prefer and avoid certain chargers and also networks.
Agree
"faffing with bp pulse"... I used BP pulse 3 times, never get more than 20kwh speed. Most memorable was visit bp pulse charger in London-somewhere in deep basement full of dusty cars, picture like from old horror movie. Charging speed 15kwh, setup and connect took about 20min...oh boy...
Now we ordered new car with motability and you can guess what network discount we get... BP pulse of course! So its membership with couple penies discount on slowest, max 2 stalls per place network. Its more mockery than some real help...
Thanks for the comment. Agree, not worth the hassle of the user experience
I'm sorry you had to use a BP charger, you have my comiserations
😂😂😂
Hi Derek.
You driving to fast is 18 kWh.😃😃
It’s city car not for long journey.
Efficiency it’s not great in long range.
What is efficiency in city ?
Thanks. I'm usually getting told I drive too slow 🤣🤣. City driving should see 14 to 15kwh/100km
£0.75 per kWh. Wow that is expensive. Prices have lost control with reality.
Competition is badly needed
Our charging network is absolutely scandalous in comparison to the rest of Europe
Thanks for the comment. Lots of room for improvement for sure
Interesting test.
Thank you!
Charging EVs on diesel-powered Ferry is not exactly echo friendly is it ?
Why? Its using the diesel anyway, if anything its ultra clean
Very interesting Keith
I like the Chines MG4
Me too!
75p per kW/h, I though ESB was bad.
Exactly!
Why are you chargin at instavolt! Gridserve, ChargePoint, BP Pulse, Shell Recharge, IONITY are all half the price!
Convenience unfortunately, not knowing the areas and I paid for it
@@NevoEVReviewIreland Thanks for the reply but we should all avoid them, until they realise their prices are too high.
Those motorway chargers are a bit of a rip off.
At the moment yes. Competition is a good thing hopefully
On driver assist, if you engage Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) instead of regular cruise control, that actually keeps you centred in the lane, so effectively steers for you on the motorway
The M6 toll prices are ridiculous, it's always worth checking the traffic conditions through the West Midlands. If the M6 is jammed up from J11-J4 then it is worth paying to avoid, otherwise it's a handy cash saving if you don't use the toll road
Appreciate the comment Billy. I live and learn
Thanks for the comment
75p per kWh is crazy I agree. My Tesla charges at around 40p or less and does 4 mi/kWh if I take it easy so around 10p/mile from a Supercharger. If I charge from home it is a quarter of that price so less than 2.5p per mile. My last three Turbo Diesels would never do more than 55mpg on a trip and all three engines broke down under my ownership. Diesels are smelly dirty dinosaurs.
The poor efficiency is the main thing that puts me off the MG 4 my older design ice based Ioniq beats it hands down. So much for progress☹
Thanks for the comment Paul. Hard to beat the original IONIQ. Not many like it
BP pulse is expensive and very user unfriendly.Have complained but no action as they are firmly into fossil
I agree unfortunately. Thanks for the comment
Whatever happened to that much-hyped multiple MG4 road-trip from the UK to the World Cup in Qatar? Abandoned? Achieved? Did anyone care either way?
Paul G
I remember something about that. Was it some Wales fans?
@@countessa1estheria In Ireland, I believe the cost of Leccy at a motorway services is approx 70c per KW/H (that's euro cents)
Rubbish, it`s all charging. Worst is I am getting this car.
Thanks for the comment. Normal everyday driving along with home charging overnights will see you right
A poor and disjointed review.
Sorry you feel that way Frank. What would you have liked to have seen? I've a proper review of the MG4 separately on the link below if it's the car you'd like reviewed.

@@NevoEVReviewIrelandDerek, if I may say so you have nothing to apologise for. There is absolutely nothing in the title of the vid to suggest it was a car review.
Some people eh...
