Thank you for the content. I'm loving this EV, but a concerning issue nowadays is the price of rapid charging Vs back in the days when the Nissan Leaf was king. £0.65 per kWh and the first stop was 31kwh added. That's around £20. This 31kwh added would give a real world range of around 120 miles. This equates to 16.6p per mile. A prius that returns 70-80mpg at current petrol prices is less pence per mile to run and costs less than a long range EV. I think EVs suit certain circumstances and scenarios if purely looking at the cost per mile. Wouldn't recommend an EV to a regular long distance commuter but great for other use cases as you'd charge at home like me at 5.5p per kWh or even better via solar panel ect
The only viable route currently is home charging at mega low rate or type 2 if you’re staying over somewhere. Interestingly I’m currently putting together a new Leaf review at the moment, thank you Ash
Used MG4 SE is about £22k with super-low mileage. Prius with equivalent mileage (under 10k) is £19k. That's not a big gap.. and the running / maintenance costs will soon make up the difference.
That's a bit misleading, as on a trip; motorways, you'll never get 70-80mpg out of a prius. It'll be more like 55mpg as long trips do not really make the best use of the electric side, then you are left with a not so economical petrol engine doing about 13p per mile, which is not a vast amount more than 16.6p. Then there's the offset of 220 ish miles at the start at 2.5p per mile. Still, if you cant charge at home, don't get an EV unless your charging is paid for.
Thank you for the comparison, it’s interesting to look at the numbers side by side, yes home charging is definitely preferred however a number of manufacturers off mileage packs, lower rates Ford, BYD etc
@@PlanetautoUK Definitely! I've been calculating away as we have just traded a Corolla Self charging hybrid in for an Enyaq. The Corolla was working out at 11.3p per mile, which is pretty damn good for an ICE - circa. 56 ish mpg with a best of 62.4mpg. Based on public charging at 75p per kWh and home charging at 9p per kWh, 43% of our charging would need to be public for it to break even with the Corolla. That's never going to happen. So up to 6500miles a year on public chargers and we still win, and that's against a very efficient ICE car fuelled by petrol over the more expensive diesel - our most effficient car to date.
Random as we use 2 4k iPhone 14’s and 4k Canon R6 and Rode Mic, since this we’ve added a mini Rode Mic for mobiles also as point of reference our reviews rather than road trips are filmed to a more production level finish - the road trips are, as it happens 😀 thank you for the kind words -
@@PlanetautoUK thanks, appreciate the quick reply. Do you still love the MG4? I've read great things, considering the Trophy Vs standard SE at the moment.
I see that charging at public chargers is now a similar cost per mile as diesel. Obviously, the more home charging you do, the cheaper it will be for the moment.
Love your real world driving experience facts and testing out features, range etc.Can I ask how high seats are,the reason being I have back problems and need a fairly high seat position? Happy New Year and look forward to more videos in 2023.
The way to do it currently is top up charges over a few days, that way it can be as low as 12p per hour for around 4 hours each night with an ev tariff.
@@slimbo689 It will be battery capacity X electricity rate per kWh. The speed of the home charger makes no real difference. Battery is 77kWh(?) X 34p per kWh (UK standard energy capped rate at the moment) = £26.18. it will cost a bit more to account for losses. This will be the same calculation for any EV. I've assumed current standard rate but off peak tariff may vary, mine is 11p for 7 hours. Takes a couple of days from low charge to get the best rate. That works out at £8.47
Lovely video, what's your appreciation of the LKA? We hear a lot of drivers saying it's very nervous and borderline dangerous.. do you always have it off perhaps?
Thank you Airbag for the kind words, we’ve found it fine, I’ve never disabled it, it seems very similar to other LKA systems to me - in fact tomorrow we’ve an MG4 X Power arriving in which we’ll road trip once again. I’m intrigued to see if they’ve done any tweaks to safety.
@@PlanetautoUKOh my I wish I could buy the X Power.. As I understand there is a MG4 refresh (adds the rear windscreen wiper and middle headrest + 1 pedal driving and a few other tweaks) Maybe the X Power will be based off that. Anyway look forward to the next video
Hi Mandeep - that's a tough one, but we would have to say MG4 - it's more advanced, and has uprated tech like the adaptive regen for a start. The ZS EV is a good SUV though, it's just not as good. *A
Another great video 👍🏻.So trying to decide between mg 4 trophie or a used Kia e niro. Both similar prices but I think the Kia has a longer range. We will mainly be driving motorway miles. But I like the looks of the mg. Any advice out there 🙂
The range of the MG4 trophy is rather good at around 280! We got pretty much mile for mile at up to motorway speeds, and when we dropped to 50 for the many average speed areas, it really started to recoup. The e-Niro and the new Niro EV are great long journey cars, and have great range too, recoup well, and may just have the edge in terms of price if you are going for a used one. Our advice is to test drive both, and see what suits you better. *A
Good video. I have ordered an Mg 4 trophy model as well. I was wondering whether the battery conditioning mode automatically came on when you set the car’s sat nav to the rapid charger?
Hi just watch your mg4 800 mile trip enjoyed it but that said I am thinking about getting one but they look very complex to drive I wish you and your wife could do a utube clip on how it all works with out driving it the 10.25 screen look very confuseing and the driving screen look confused to me explain thees would be a great help I mean what they can do and how to link to your phone all so what apps you used when you charge it in Scotland and how much the charge cost which charging points are the cheapest and so on. And could you please tell me if you do car test for your job I watched the one with you and your wife in the trophy connect when you went on a 400 mile trip yours John. 😷
Such a nice color scheme on that particular car!! We are concidering this as our new car next year in the top trim since it is priced so incredibly good compared to the main competitors. The only thing i wonder about is why use the eco mode and no AC? If i am on a trip i want all the comforts and the heat and all the bells and whistles. I do have a hyundai kona and that car has never seen eco mode because..why? Im not interested in squeezing out 5 more miles to have foggy windows, no radio and cold seats since the point of having a car with all these comforts is then moot. It is otherwise a nice review but us normal people do not go for all the EV batter squeezing modes since there is no point. I see EV drivers in the 110Km/H zone on our highways go like 80 and it has to stop. It is a car no matter what fuel it goes on. Enjoy it and just plan for whatever stop is needed 😀
None of it was economy to save money as far as we were concerned, we do like to demonstrate the best ranges on a long haul, but we’re northern, unless it’s cold it’s not pleasant to have heated seats, air con we hate with a passion- we would drive with the windows down however microphones don’t like that - increases noise exponentially. Plus the majority who buy one do want super economy. Our day to day to car is a Mercedes W124 25mpg and I drive that with the windows down. There’s very little between normal and eco in acceleration, this video was to demonstrate 800 mile won’t break the bank, locally I drive pretty much everything in Sport or the equivalent, but nobody cares nowadays, most want eco, as for the Stereo thats obvious, copyright on video affects monetisation- in our own cars and when not filming we have systems whacked up. PS We travelled at 65 to 70 in a 70 and 55 in a 60 - watch part 2 for a different experience.
Its a nicer looking car than there zs ev version and the dealt with the problems the car had. you could have left the MW and not pay 65p a unit for a service station rip off prices . many chargers in Scotland are 40p or less for 50kw chargers. good places are Falkirk hub at football site, and Stirling Castlehill hub are excellent places. You can not take much notice of comments saying working or not. chargeplace scotland website does show problem charger list. the tesco 28p a 7kw charger price. is far cheaper than some but not all. now the set to normal may be change and set to eco on start up. if you want it that way. if you had stopped at Stirling hub it is free, then you would have needed less charge on the 7kw at 19p.
Ah, thank you for the heads up, we were rather happy with the Aberdeen experience, we class anything more than our C124 economical :) It was a shame the charger in Aviemore didn't want to play ball - however Tesla saved the day - ta for the David
I'm considering an MG4 to replace one of our cars next year. How did you get on without a rear wiper in that rain? I can't understand why this seems to have become a bit of a trend with some makes / models or, is it just a cost saving measure? I just can't imagine driving a hatch, Estate or SUV in the UK without a rear wiper.
Members on the MGEV (MG4 sub forum) forum haven’t reported any issues with the lack of a rear wiper due to the rear spoiler and lip preventing any road grime getting onto the rear windscreen. Some use Rain-X, but at speed the car’s aerodynamic qualities push water off the screen.
Yeah sounds a lot of hassle charging and range anxiety, Just went to Devon 320miles in a 20 year old Vauxhall Omega 3.2litre elite on a tank with no stops and still had a 1/3rd of a tank at the end. Floored it as much as I liked and leccy all on full power heating etc. Also will say much less road noise that that MG is giving. Wow 65p kw a unit leccy now.
No range anxiety and 780 miles under £100, around less than half of your V6, our C124 would likely be around what you paid too. As for charging it’s getting faster all the time, PHEV is the best of both worlds or full hybrid, 3 years ago we did 400 miles for £15, it shows eleccy prices are now just silly. Enjoy your Omega, fantastic car, lovely tone and keep hold, quite rare now.
@@PlanetautoUK Think I will have to arrange a test drive for one of these EV cars see what all the fuss is about. It is just the hassle of charging and all the videos I see people popping them in eco mode and spending hours at a service station etc while charging puts me off. I still don't know anyone with a fully electric car and Tesla and Nio share price tanked the past years makes me wonder if they have a future.
It’s a strange time, it’s an EV future for the time being, if technology advances with blade batteries etc - it possibly has a future charging times of around 5m for couple hundred miles, and 7-800 mile range, as for commercials, diesel will be around for a few years to come. As for our petrol cars we’ll keep them until they’re prized from our hands, thank you Tommy
Our point is that we’ve never heard of it, and we searched for it. To be honest, it seems to be an isolated case. How many times have you heard of this happening?
Oh we don’t watch mass media, good point though, that’s always been my thought since owning my first car with electric windows an Orion i. How do you get out if you end up in water and all releases have an element of electric. Another reason we fitted winders to our Mk2 Golf. Knowing MG UK if it’s not an isolated case it will be sorted rather quickly like the gearbox oil. Thank you for bringing this to our attention David - we’ll watch this.
Yes, it’s changed a bit hasn’t it, we cut our teeth with MG, now everyone wants one, bottom line is they’ve improved immensely and have killer prices, thank you Journei
The SE Long Range only has 11 miles more in terms of overall range, so not missing out too much with this one, CastleKnight7! Ben & I are looking forward to that extended range though 😍 *A
If the conditions allow this is perfectly safe, travelling at say 40-45 in perfect conditions is likely to cause a hinderance and encourage drivers to pass more frequently when the roads don’t necessarily permit.
The challenge with Deer especially where we live is they jump over the wall a small rangale immediately in front or straight on your bonnet. Very rarely are they seen before especially in woodland upto the road side, in 29 years we’ve hit one in exactly the case mentioned above, very sad indeed, that’s the Lake District for you though. The MG has gone back to the manufacturer - Musso next week.
I have the MG4 SE, bought in December to replace my lovely 2 year old MG5 exclusive. I love the MG4 BUT the adaptive cruise control is a nightmare. The car slams on the brakes when passing a parked car! I love normal cruise control having used it for 20 years. Unless something can be done about it, I'm just going to have to switch it off. The lane assist system is also far too violent. Again, it is easy to simply switch off. The MG4 is a brilliant car but the above foibles need to be sorted. It seems crazy to have to disengage from safety features because they are set up badly and pretty dangerous.
Apart from the motorway bits, I never noticed any of the above, I’ve experienced in other vehicles - a certain pickup comes to mind, that lane keep assist was militant. Try indicating when you see a parked vehicle, the likelihood is it will override it like changing lanes on the motorway. Thank you Geoff, hopefully this is a handy workaround.
@@PlanetautoUK Thanks for that. However, it’s back in the garage next week. Both these items are dangerous. I’ve been driving for over 50 years, have never needed these, and I don’t need them now. It would be nice if they worked, but they don’t.
find me car that doesn't depreciate rapidly in it's first 3 years. most EV cars only come with 100k miles warranty on the battery anyway and some even less. Please don't compare an ICE vehicle experience to an EV as those times are changing. As far as EVs are concerned, for bang for your buck, this seems up there. Whether you want to be a badge snob is another conversation altogether.
@@PlanetautoUK yes public charging is very expensive it seems (I don't won an EV myself yet) however if you charge at home and especially if you are on an EV tarrif with your provider, you are still going to have cheaper running costs. At the moment if you can't charge at home, apart from savings on maintenance of ICE vehicles, the fuel / electricity costs from public chargers are similar costs

@MonticArckeys they’re great cars, it’s gone back now - however we’ve a review and road trip on X Power coming soon Montic
I see that charging at public chargers is now a similar cost per mile as diesel. Obviously, the more home charging you do, the cheaper it will be for the moment.
Yes, that or type 2 on overnight stays, that’s our plan, thank you Cnoc
Love your real world driving experience facts and testing out features, range etc.Can I ask how high seats are,the reason being I have back problems and need a fairly high seat position?
Happy New Year and look forward to more videos in 2023.
Thank you for the kind words Mister B, I’ve replied on your previous comment 😀
They’ll always be a low cost time to charge from home even if it’s just 4-5 hours
£12.90 from 6% to a full charge is good with me, ordered my trophy last week.
Exactly, and on home charge even better, enjoy Slimbo - keep us posted on your thoughts and thank you
@@PlanetautoUK Even better, so what is your cost on a 7kw home charge for a full charge if you don't mind me asking, by the way great videos.
That works out at £8.47
Thank you for simplifying and adding this David,
After sitting in one I like the build quality but my partner who’s 5Ft 2” could not see over the steering wheel and bonnet.
Hello Jessica was that with the seat at full height? as Annabelle is 5ft 3 and has driven 2 different models with no problem.
When does the super long range come out
Sometime next year! *A
Hi, did you try the voice assistant for making calls? It understands me for most commands but never gets the correct person from my phone list🤷♂️
Oh, no, one thing we never remember apologies, and thank you we’ll try that moving forward Robert
I have this one on order, in blue.
You'll love it, Part 2 coming soon
Can i please ask if the car came with the granny charger (3 pin home charger)
Ours came with an emergency charger as they’re now called, however best bet checker with your dealer, thank you Syph
@Airbag888 as soon as it arrives weather permitting il go LIVE on the forecourt, hopefully it’ll have a rear light too. It’s going to be a fun week.
Which would you say is a better all around vehicle, the mg4 trophy long range or the zs ev long range trophy?
Hi Mandeep - that's a tough one, but we would have to say MG4 - it's more advanced, and has uprated tech like the adaptive regen for a start. The ZS EV is a good SUV though, it's just not as good. *A
Can you please advise if the electric seats have a memory function. With 2 of us sharing driving, this would be very helpful. Good video!
Glad you liked the review. Pretty sure it doesn’t have memory function, but we will check with MG tomorrow. *A
@@PlanetautoUK Thanks, I'd be interested what MG have to say
We asked MG UK this today, they’re checking with their product on this model and future, thank you Highmoor
@@PlanetautoUK Many thanks.😎
You’re very welcome 😊
So each time driver needs to select eco or sport after start
Yes, but it does remember favourite button mapping, driving modes etc
Thank you for your reply 👍🏻
@@shelaghjordan9441 You're very welcome, keep us posted
Good video. I have ordered an Mg 4 trophy model as well. I was wondering whether the battery conditioning mode automatically came on when you set the car’s sat nav to the rapid charger?
Good question, Syed - we will find out and get back to you. *A
Did you check this?
It seems UK's charging infrastructure is better than in the States.
It is, mind you from what we’ve heard it all depends on which state you’re in, thank you ZI
I have not been able to find out if the MG4 can store driver seat positions. Can it?
MG haven't come back to me yet, so I shall check in with them today. *A
Also has it a high driving position?
No it’s essentially car rather than say MPV or SUV - this is covered in the review 😊
No memory function on seats Giles, apologies for the delay
Rather a relaxed way to hold the steering wheel.
Yes, been doing it for 29 years on leisurely drives, back roads and track racing that’s a different story.
Great video, Ty! Do you think getting the higher spec trophy is worth the extra ££?x
Thank you 😊 We prefer the styling and the tech doesn’t hurt, thank you Edwina
Exciting, looks like an electric mgf type car might be returning,
It does, lots coming from MG this year, we’ll that’s what we’ve heard. Thank you Matthew
We didn’t notice it a comes from driving vans and saloons, to be honest, Colin! *A
L’aerodinamisme évacue les gouttes de pluie
Members on the MGEV (MG4 sub forum) forum haven’t reported any issues with the lack of a rear wiper due to the rear spoiler and lip preventing any road grime getting onto the rear windscreen. Some use Rain-X, but at speed the car’s aerodynamic qualities push water off the screen.
@@GP-84 Oui, c’est vrai.
Wiper would be to short to clean all the rear window. You can try with a meter.
Nice car but its a shame it isnt more efficient and longer range
It is efficient with normal driving, as Part 2 demonstrates - ta Tony
Is it true that the BMW ix EV is the same car as the MG zx ? Yes
Erm never heard of the ZX, which country are you in please?
820 miles that's my diesel range not that I would drive for 12 hours however its nice to focus 100% on the family needs and not the car
Glad you enjoyed it
Yeah sounds a lot of hassle charging and range anxiety, Just went to Devon 320miles in a 20 year old Vauxhall Omega 3.2litre elite on a tank with no stops and still had a 1/3rd of a tank at the end.
Good video.
Can't wait till they're for sale in Australia.
Thank you Proxima, yes we think they’ll be a massive hit there.
What about the person who got locked in an Mg and doors wouldn’t open ?
The who? heard of that in a few motors
@@PlanetautoUK my point is ,its not safe as Mg should recall them as that’s downright dangerous
Our point is that we’ve never heard of it, and we searched for it. To be honest, it seems to be an isolated case. How many times have you heard of this happening?
@@PlanetautoUK was in national news ,its your car and choice ,but very poor if doors cannot open in event of power cut ,which happened 💯
They say only charge them too 80%
It’s not that straight forward, depends on chargers, and it’s technically the measurement for RC 10-80 - type 2 to 100% is common practice.
Hate that everyone has a MG now first saw it on this channel but last year MG was the most popular car in my area. It was on the cheaper suv side
Yes, it’s changed a bit hasn’t it, we cut our teeth with MG, now everyone wants one, bottom line is they’ve improved immensely and have killer prices, thank you Journei
I’m chopping in my Peugeot e2008… lovely car but the range is rubbish
You should take the MG4 SE long range for a test drive. There’s also an extended range coming out next year.
The SE Long Range only has 11 miles more in terms of overall range, so not missing out too much with this one, CastleKnight7! Ben & I are looking forward to that extended range though 😍 *A
It could do with a bit more range. *A
There's also a 400bhp twin motor model coming at some point. I wonder how much they will want for that?
mg4 is good car
It is 😊

60mph on Country Road? Dangerous!
If the conditions allow this is perfectly safe, travelling at say 40-45 in perfect conditions is likely to cause a hinderance and encourage drivers to pass more frequently when the roads don’t necessarily permit.
@Planetauto yeah I see plenty of deer's crossing country roads. You wouldn't want to wreck that nice paint work on your mg4. Take care.
Not worth the money right now. The next version should be better. This one has issues. Like this horrid infotainment.
The infotainment is fine the first gen version in ZS etc was slow and response wasn’t great this is leaps and bounds ahead, with more features.
Looks like it’s a one off then, as the two I drove never experienced this on every type of road over 800 miles.
How many parked cars do you find on a motorway also why would you use the lane keep assist unless you're on a motorway
Circa 60% depreciation first year, new battery required 100,000 miles at a cost of 12k,Chinise rubbish.
Not even close, take a look at resale values
find me car that doesn't depreciate rapidly in it's first 3 years. most EV cars only come with 100k miles warranty on the battery anyway and some even less. Please don't compare an ICE vehicle experience to an EV as those times are changing. As far as EVs are concerned, for bang for your buck, this seems up there. Whether you want to be a badge snob is another conversation altogether.
It’s a tough one, it was all good until electric increased exponentially, thank you Trent
We've gone ahead and had a Type 2 wall box fitted at home, @trentgashi5943
