im crying because I have been having trouble all day looking for the formula. this women always seems to help me no other nursing tutor on RUclips is as good as she. she doesn't have a strong accent or a dirty white board :))))
Thats awesome, but the last problem I would do differently in regards to total mL in a day. If 8(hours) goes into 24(hours), 3 times, could we just multiply 0.5 mL x 3 to get 1.5 mL? That worked better for me. I don’t know if it was a reason to do it this way though.
You can do it whatever way you feel comfortable with, as long as it gets you to the correct answer. My math has to be simplified otherwise I get confused lol
This how I did it too in my head without even writing it down and it seems like every nursing school or teacher does it this long drawn out way … too many steps too much room for error

surprisingly, i’m good with dosage but thing is this method is a bit confusing to me. for e.g i use the 1=5/2=? this method is easier to me. like 1ml=10000 units. ?ml=5000 units. cross multiply then divide
Omg, she doesn't know anything, all video was looking at the answer near by. Converting g to mg soooooo long, it's much easier and faster. Literally she confuses people.
Hi Cathy! I love your videos! Thank you for all your help!! I was able to pass my Summer Pharmacology class with a 100! A+, I used your pharmacology cards and videos! Where can I obtain these dosage calculation practice problems from your website? I would love more practice but I can't find them.
Hello. My question is how will I know if I need to divide or multiply first? Because I’m watching this video to help me get started on the workbook and I noticed on the 3rd problem in this video you didn’t multiply and went straight into division. Thanks kindly
going straight into division is if you know what is multiplied at the top and bottom, so mental math. we always multiple the top and multiple the bottom then divide them.
Conversion questions: 1/2 fluid ounce= ----mL 300mg = mg ----- 7mcg= ----mg O.25gm=-------mg 40gm=-------mg 250mL=------liter I am having problem solving these
Please do as many different calculations required in nursing school, maybe tutorial on medication labels and which one to calculate, some bottles have different information. Thank you so much
Hello my name is Ella and I’m studying to be a pharmacy technician. I’m pulling hair here on this problem. Need help 😳 Order: tetracycline 500 mg qid * 5 d; then 500 mg bid * 5 d; then 500 mg daily * 5 d for acne How many capsules are needed per dose ? What is the total number of capsules that will be given over the first 5 days ? What is the total number of capsules that will be given over days 6 through 10? What is the total number of capsules that will be given over the last 5 days ? What is the total number of capsules necessary to fill the prescription? What is the total dosage per day in the first 5 days (g)? What is the total dosage per day for days 6 to 10(g)? What is the total dosage per day for the last 5 days (mg)?
This is so cool. You are very good in this video, ma’am. I got a c in this class but I can easily understand what you were doing. I can even get a B or A in the class next time. The course was a dosage calculations before being in the program. So, I am bit sad and wonder if I should apply to university or just community college.
So happy my video helped you! I will be making more too, so be sure to subscribe! I think both paths you are considering could work fine... hang in there and don’t give up! ❤️
Don't underestimate yourself. Every student's ability increases with good instructors. Go where you want to go and you can do anything you set your mind to. Sometimes free online teachers are a lot better than class instructors so you can utilize both. Just know that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Nothing is impossible. Community college is cheaper so it's not a bad idea to do undergrad work there then move onto Uni but just ask around and find what's best for you. Ask successful people that you respect and they can give you good advice :)
Hello! thank you so much for teaching more simple this exercise, But I do have a question, once you divided 5,000 by 10,000 is not 1? not 0.5? or why is 0.5? I will really appreciate your answer
Question. Forgive my ignorance, I am still taking my prereqs but have a required dosage class. Anyway, for the third problem second question I also got 1.5mL but I multiplied 0.5mL by 3. Should I not do that? If someone can explain please feel free. Thank you!
My professor taught this in class and nobody understood her since she was rushing and spewing formulas and numbers everywhere on our online class. Thank you so much!!
Hi Nurse Cathy is there a way to verify a dosage calc I had a student from school tell me that theres a way to verify it and work back to check and make sure its right?
For me decimals is very difficult. I fail my exam last year now I start to watch you tube because nobody at my home who can teach me. I am trying to learn from RUclips today I started. I hope I will be able to learn decimals.
Hi cathy. Trying to get this answer. I got 550ml total fluid for 6hrs? Here’s the question. Ordered 1000ml over 2hrs then give 100ml/hr over 12 hrs what is the total fluid in 6hrs? I am confused. Thank you cathy.
Hi Vicki! So for the first 2 hours the patient would get 1,000ml (per the order). Then for the next 4 hours, the patient would get 400ml (since the IV rate would be 100ml/hr as ordered). So for the FIRST six hours, the patient would get 1,400ml of fluid.
Is it true that while you are in nursing school you are unable to use a calculator? Also when you take the Nclex exam no calculator? I am currently taking my first pharmacology class and no calculator are allowed.
@@LevelUpRN omg I have not been able to sleep or eat for two weeks stressing this piece. I am really working extra hard but this piece had me sick. Thank you so much for answering me.
For the nurses here...I’m curious if during real life scenarios and under stress, do you guys solve these calculations mentally or are you pulling out your phone to get your dosing ? Thanks 👍
I would like to thank the lady in the video for helping me understand the concept of the problem, and learning how to do it, as a new CNA the teacher in the classroom was not helpful, but I have to say that I actually understood the assignment, and I was right on point with everything. Thank You
OMG. I got a test in a hour and she has already made more sense to me then the entire week of trying to upstand calculations

Thanks Trevor. Best of luck! You got this!!!
Well q8h = 3 times a day. Just multiply 0.5 heparin x 3 = 1.5mls

0.5g = 500mg ÷2 =250mg
so, 5mL would get x2 = 10mL

Hi.Nurse Cathy. You make it make sense. I am starting to understand it. Smh
Thank you!!!😊
i have a question. So why in the "whats order" 8hours isnt put to use? why its not 0.4 over 8?
It's basically asking how many capsules to take every 8 hours to get the 0.4g which is the 2 -200mg capsules
Conversion questions: 1/2 fluid ounce= ----mL
300mg = mg -----
7mcg= ----mg
O.25gm=-------mg

250mL=------liter

I have a question that will sound crazy. Is the nursing math different in the hospital setting than in school?
Not a crazy question! Very little math is required in the hospital setting, as dosing (# tablets, mL required) is typically automatically calculated…
I am sooooooooo grateful for you! You make it make so much sense. I just got complete flashcard pack and Im so stoked

In the uk we’d just convert the prescription to mg. Then we say what you want / what you’ve got x what it’s in. Or WIG for short. Very similar
Hello! thank you so much for teaching more simple this exercise, But I do have a question, once you divided 5,000 by 10,000 is not 1? not 0.5? or why is 0.5? I will really appreciate your answer

5,000 is 1/2 of 10,000
This is basic division

on the 3rd question for the first part of the answer I got 5ml and for the 2nd part I got 15ml for 24hrs
