In the summer of 1970, my older brother worked at a gas station along I-10, about 10 miles West of Houston. I was hanging out at the station one Sunday afternoon when a car unlike anything I'd ever seen came limping into the driveway on a flat rear tire. Turns out, it was an Iso Grifo. There was a Harley Davidson motorcycle sticking out of the trunk. This guy steps out of the car, hair way past his shoulders, and wearing a long flowing gown and sandals. He told us he was driving his friend's car from Florida to California, and asked if we had a tire that would fit the car. He didn't want to try to get the Harley out of the trunk to get to the spare. Of course, we didn't have anything nearly big enough to fit the rim, which looked like it was a foot wide. We scrounged around town and finally found an L78-15 tire in someone's garage, and managed to get it to pop on to the rim. He was hoping that would get him as far as San Antonio where he might be able to find a properly sized tire for the rest of his trip. Always wondered if he made it to S.A. on that old tire...

This car looks amazing, The back looks like a mix of an Austin martin and a 1963 corvette.

I remember seeing these in the Road & Track classifieds back in the mid to late 70's. They would pop up pretty regularly for 10 to 15 grand. A little bit less than the purebred Italian machinery, which were selling for 5 to 10 grand more for like a 330 GTC, but still pretty cheap compared with comparable brand new cars at the time for what you were getting. If only I had a couple of hundred grand and a time machine, my garage would be spectacular.

In 1966 I bought a small hard-bound guide of cars and this car was in it, I always thought this was such a cool car, even back then.

Beautiful! Never seen one in person. And then the '70 Series II with the hidden headlights offered a Chevy 454. For 1972 a Ford 351 could be had. Like the Pantera and Mangusta the Grifo straddled the line between muscle car, sports car and exotic.

I'm American, have known about the Iso Grifo since the late '60s, and would recognize one immediately. Even if I wasn't already familiar with them, no way I'd think it was a Camaro. Some type of Ferrari maybe, but not a Camaro. That sexy body screams 1960s Italian.

When I was young under the apple bow and fresh behind the wheel of the Grifo and Rivolta, there was a singular disconcerting thrill .. bury the throttle and take off sideways ... bit of a 'hello' experience!
