Many people didn't understant, but this is about the expectations and breaking them with absurd tactics, which is humorous.
I think this sketch means to highlight the way people usually take advantage of the question "Is this free?" When people ask that, they expect the other person to say yes and that's it. It's the norm. But when the main character in this sketch starts asking/saying random things to people when they ask him "Is this free?", they're taken aback. And this is the intention of the sketch. People are so used to getting an affirmative response to the question and nothing more. The entire interaction is done without thinking. So I think this sketch just shows how people react when they're thrown off guard by his "strange" responses to their question. It shows that they're really not thinking - they're just doing what society has ingrained into them, almost habituated to it.
This is MY understanding of what the sketch means.

Very good detailed interpretation, often people don't think all scenarios and fill brain based on shade they see of person and on human limitations in these stranger situations, interactions happen based on what has been told to judge in the assumed way and do the fillers on how the person is. This sometimes acts ok and helps but can end up in disasters too more than one can expect of on free offers situations with strangers if not proceeded with caution.This angle is my addition interpretation to yours :).

It's about how we take for granted that everything is free but it will costs us something in return, like privacy and how we give away our data without really giving out consent. it looks weird when a stranger asks you for some personal questions, like when he asked the girl some intrusive questions, or tried to build a profile of his ideology for just a seat. yet on line these type of behavior is considered totally normal if it's the service providers who are doing it. at least that's my take on it. might be right, might be wrong.

My favorite was the "I advice you not to sit there" one! That made me laugh the hardest I have in a while.

It wasn't very humorous, though it was far from boring. I'm not sure what the appeal is but it just is appealing. I loved how it all ended up to the final question of "is this free?" It was a well made video and I thoroughly enjoyed it

When people say "Excuse me," I say "Ah, no don't worry about it, I do it all the time," and they either laugh, stare, or you just see their faces go blank. Some people's reactions are just priceless.
A favorite of mine when asked by a store attendant "Can I help you?" is "No, I was born this way......"

From where I'm from, people would just ask "Is this seat taken?" and then helped themselves to the seat before I could give them an answer. What baffles me was why they even bothered asking if they were just gonna sit down without waiting for my answer anyway.

As soon as he came up to the camera to ask "Is this free?", I thought "You'll have to ask the owner". Guess it's pretty easy to do.

"Do you mind if I sit here?" sounds more natural to me.
The question, "Is this free?", is a sad reflection of how humans often fail at communication. Of course, this imprecise question can be answered in a number of ways, many of which may confound the person asking the question, as evidenced in the video. A more precise question would be " May I share your table", or "Would you mind if I sit here?"
This video is a reminder that words matter, and how we put them together in a sentence can influence how others react to us. Good job! Great video!

This isn't just funny, it's kind of catchy and makes me want to try it.
Please don't try it. I don't need a 5 minute conversation with some random person who has nothing better to do than try to waste my time by engaging in trivial nonsense conversation. I want to sit down, societal norms dictate I am polite and ask before sitting down at the same table as someone else. I have zero interest in the person sitting there because I most likely have my own business to attend to, it is only politeness that I even engage with that person. Don't be a hipster like this guy and assume everyone elses life is as empty and time is as worthless as yours. Just say yes and let them get on with their lives while you get on with yours.

That was brilliant! Half the time when someone asks me if the seat is taken, they already have their hands on it or their belongings down. They already expect to sit there. It's more a polite way of saying I want the seat. If you go to a cafe like Starbucks this happens quite often.

True story.
Friend is on subway in the Washington Dzc area. Has his bag on a seat behind him or something, so it's not obvious it's his.
Woman passenger inquires along the lines of, "Is this yours?" and he acknowledges it is.
She goes on like, "Oh good. Now I know it's safe."
To which he points out the logical flaw in her reasoning, "Why does knowing it's mine make you safer?"
She apparently forthwith reports this exchange to the station manager.
Long story short, he's detained, his bag examined and subsequently blown up in a nearby field, and there's a news reports on TV that night.
Knowing my friend, it was no surprise when some time later he casually shared the incident with me in the course of a conversation. I pointed out that those details were left out of the evening news.
Just a word to the wise.

I don't know what to think of this. This really wasn't funny to me, it was just kind of dull.The funniness was supposed to come from the questions, I think, from the weirdness of them, but I just didn't see the appeal of watching a guy doing things and other people reacting to it. It was like if someone had scripted a prank video or something. Kinda cringy and strange.
I agree. It sounds like what you're saying is that one of it's main problems is that everything is completely contrived, and not even necessarily realistic. That's at least the issue I have. Much of his reactions were just quite bland or cheesy too.

Yea, if the video was compressed into just 5, or even 7 minutes it would have been fine. I think it would have been funnier if he had REALLY done this, but to me it looked like a prank video WITHIN a movie, but the reactions weren't funny at all, there was a whole lot of dead space, meaning silence or nothingness that went on. it was a great concept that just didn't go over well. I would still rate this a 3.5 stars out of 5.

This is genius. I've been on a short film marathon the last few hours including brilliantly edited Sci-Fi shorts, comedy and fantasy, but this one kept me smile for several minutes afterwards. A masterpiece!
This last days I have the good luck to cross my life with some really good short films, and I must say that this is one of the best, and definitely the funniest. Good idea and excellent execution. Go on, pal. (Almost two years later, maybe thats not so late. And sorry for the misused words or bad orthography, english isn't my native language)

(by the way in Perú it is not regular to ask for free sit in that manner, here we could ask "Are you using that chair?" or "May I join you?")
When I own my own chain of restaurants I will have seats that are far enough away that it's cosher but close enough that it's awkward so i would be constantly entertained
